‘Politics Is Not Going to Change Our World’: Pat Robertson Will No Longer Endorse Politicians

CBNs Pat Robertson Says Hes No Longer Making Political Endorsements

NORFOLK, Va. (The Blaze/AP) — Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson took a tiny television station in southeast Virginia and turned it into a global network that helped him launch a presidential bid and become one of the nation’s most influential conservative Christians.

That said, it seems the famed televangelist is getting out of the political endorsement game. This news comes as the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) has its 50th anniversary this weekend.

Robertson’s decision marks a significant departure for the founder of the Christian Coalition, who was once a central figure in Republican politics. Robertson, 81, was frequently sought out by GOP candidates hoping to curry favor with religious conservatives. His news-and-talk show on CBN, the “700 Club,” is viewed by about 1 million people in the U.S. each day.

“I’ve personally backed off from direct political involvement,” Robertson said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press this week. “I’ve been there, done that. The truth of the matter is politics is not going to change our world. It’s really not going to make that much of a difference.”

Robertson’s influence has waned in recent years as he gave up control of the Christian Coalition and made a series of comments that many people considered bizarre or offensive.

He once said American agents should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and suggested the debilitating stroke suffered by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was divine retribution for his decision to withdraw from the Gaza Strip. He was slammed by the White House last year for saying Haiti was cursed a day after a devastating earthquake. Watch his thoughts on Haiti:

Last month, as we reported, he outraged many by suggesting a man whose wife has Alzheimer’s Disease and was seeing another woman should divorce his wife. Watch his comments, below:

He also caused a stir for saying the federal courts, pornography, abortion rights and church-state separation angered God, allowing the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to occur.

The last person Robertson endorsed was former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, a move that surprised many of his followers because of the Republican’s support for gay rights and abortion rights.

“His influence has been waning for at least a decade now to the point where even many people in the movement I am sure will be glad to see him sidelined,” said Mark Rozell, a professor of public policy at George Mason University. “They just don’t see him as reliable anymore on a lot of issues.”

As for Robertson, he acknowledged he doesn’t have the political influence he once did.

“When I was in charge of the Christian Coalition I was available to mobilize grass roots support for somebody,” he said. “I don’t have any army right now. It’s just an opinion, and that isn’t quite as good as it used to be.”

Robertson said he would continue to comment on the news of the day and noted he likes Mitt Romney’s politics. He said he considers the Mormon candidate “an outstanding Christian,” but declined to say if he would be OK with a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the White House. Both Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman are Mormons seeking the GOP nomination, and many evangelicals are skeptical of the Mormon faith’s claims to Christianity.

CBNs Pat Robertson Says Hes No Longer Making Political EndorsementsIn hindsight, Robertson said, he would have phrased some of his more controversial pronouncements differently. But he also said he’s appreciative of his forgiving audience.

Robertson said he still enjoys doing his show and has not decided how much longer he will stay on the air. His son Gordon — who also says he will not make political endorsements — already fills in for him on Fridays.

“I‘m still strong and it seems like I’m doing all right, but I don’t want to overstay my time,” he said.

Robertson said looking back on his network’s 50 years, which got its start as a tiny UHF station in Portsmouth, Va., and now occupies a sprawling campus in Virginia Beach, that he’s most proud of the work it has done reaching people overseas. That will continue to be a focus of the network as it faces heavy competition in the U.S.

“When you talk about Africa, when you talk about Latin America, they’re just now getting to the 1980s in their media choices. For us, we view that as tremendous opportunity,” Gordon Robertson said.

Today, 90 percent of CBN’s viewership is overseas, and some observers question the network’s relevance in the U.S.

David Morgan, a professor of religion at Duke University, said CBN has little choice but to look overseas to grow because audiences outside the U.S. are less interested in politics.

“They care about an established institution, a brand that’s been around for 50 years,” Morgan said. “… Probably the younger Robertson knows this very well and it’s a completely different game internationally. They can shed all the negativity, all the kind of kookiness that is associated with the senior Robertson.”

Denying that God intervenes in the affairs of nations and of men demonstraties ignorance of God. Has God’s nature changed since the Old Testament was written when he intervened back then? Or are all those historical facts merely fairy tales? Yes, all things are new in Christ, but God still acts in the affairs of men. Pat Robertson was off base only in the minds of those who put God in a box and squelch the potential of understanding his actions and character. I don’t believe the events of life are random and purposeless and that God is merely an observer.

I agree with Pat. If politics was going to work, in my 55 years of life, I would have seen an improvement somewhere. There isn’t. As a matter of fact, we are getting worse. Not better. God isn‘t interested in saving the ’world’ (yet). He’s interested in each man saving himself through Jesus Christ. Maybe, with a little help from his neighbor. A political salvation smells like a “global” salvation, and that is NOT Gods plan.

Pat may be afraid to endorse political candidates but I am NOT. Herman Cain in 2012! The man is a Tea Party Candidate, he is a Christian, he answers ALL the questions asked going straight to the point behind the question, he is composed and honest, what a difference in the political world. Herman speaks from the heart of the American people and proposes solutions to our current problems. He does NOT run from issues and he solves problems by listening first and acting later based on the real issues. Herman Cain in 2012.

Can you say “Hit the nail on the head”! Perfect…..politics WON’T change our situation. Anybody who has not read “Original Argument”…..READ IT…..I can’t believe that they anticipated EVERYTHING we are going through right now! These men were truly inspired by Divine Providence. The problem is that the progressives as stated by their grand high exalted mystic ruler Soros himself said…“they have a God complex”, NOBODY on earth has the right to play God….period. As obama himself said, “That is above my pay-grade”….Then why do they do it? EVERY founder was a man of true and deep faith. Maybe not all exactly the same faith but a true, strong, deep unwavering belief that God was guiding their every word and deed. That what they were about to do would literally “change the world”.

Liberty without faith is anarchy…. no good comes from that. ONLY faith in God will save this country. Turn away from the demons of self service….the “if it feels good do it” mentality, and turn back to our Lord.Trust in the guidance of God….He will NOT let you down. It may not be all fun, games and good times but it will be a true direction. It is there…..we just need to ask, listen, and follow. Look at what we are now following and where we have gone and are going. You tell me what road we are going down?

Sometimes going back is the key to going forward.

The entire American system was set up so that it only had enough power to rule over, or govern, or self govern, people of faith, people who would for the most part govern themselves. If you end up with a people who reject God, and ONLY do what is legal or not legal, based upon laws on the books, or whatever the state can’t stop them from doing, the state will NEVER have enough police and courts to force all of the citizens to cooperate peacefully in the society.

“Politics Is Not Going to Change Our World”

Of course, Robertson means “for the better”, but he’s still wrong. Politics IS changing the world (not to mention our country). Stealth-communism has been working in America for “100 years” — remember that phrase as you’ll hear “Progressives” (progressive-communism) say it more often as they become more bold:

“DEMOCRATS OPENLY BOAST! Socialized Medicine IS KEY To The 100 YEARS Marxist U.S.-Overthrow Strategy!”
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Loi_Vqu7Z28

Pat Robertson needed to choose better, by the individual and NOT by the Party. These Progressives (communists) have been infiltrating and corrupting ALL FACETS of our society, including BOTH political Parties.

America can still be the shining light of “ONE NATION UNDER GOD WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE” that stands alone, apart from the coming NEW WORLD ORDER totalitarian regime that will plunge mankind into the worst worldwide trauma ever known in our history. Let the watchmen of our country SPEAK UP against these impending evils at home and abroad rather than surrender into silence.

Old age takes a toll on all of us, some early some later but ultimately our judgement starts to slip and we may occasionally miss-speak. Now if you were a dolt all your life, no one notices but if you were sharp, accurate and outspoken it is quickly reported by your enemies. Perfectly Put. I have no problem with the folks here who like to inject their biblical verses and deeply felt beliefs but the world of politics is not a place where that verbiage communicates with ones opponents. In fact trying to fight fundamental Islamism which IS a political system more than a religious one…but trying to fight fundamental Islam with cites from Christian scripture that mean things to us who believe it, but it means NOTHING to the opponent..the liberal atheists, skeptics, agnostics or fundamental Islamists not necessarily in that order. A political battle must be fought in a similar fashion as a real military action. Of course there is a time for personal introspection and the invocation of God’s assistance and blessing but the actual battle itself…the pulling of the triggers and the pushing of the buttons…requires a focus and level of devoted attention that cannot be interrupted by a concomitant citing of the Bible. Once the bullets start flying it is pure foolishness to be distracted by anything other than perfecting the task at hand…which is Victory. All the glory can go to God once the mission is completed. A human being cannot effectively “multitask” fighting a political war and reading the bible simultaneously. There is time for both. Admitting that is not blasphemy. Victory requires focus. It seems to me…that God easily forgives the soldier who is focusing on the battle….while the battle rages. Victory has more than one meaning.

‘Politics Is Not Going to Change Our World’ Is Pat Robertson, a religious man, just now figuring that out? Folks, the ONLY salvation and promise of hope for this nation is GOD. Relying on the “arm of the flesh” is an idea satan devised a long time ago. See where that has gotten us? I believe that we must do all in our power to fight for what is right and true but we will not win this battle without Jesus Christ. All the money and power in this world means nothing because that‘s not what’s going to make you and me free — truly free. People can ridicule us Chrisitians all they want but we know what is true and right and I will fight for to that end. Know this, every knee shall bend and every tongue will confess that Jesus is the Christ. Just wait and see.

Sad. Very sad. I have watched him (700 Club) for a very, very long time except for the last couple of years. Always had some disagreements but then again there have been some very helpful, inspirational times. They are also involved in great ministries to the poor/sick/disaster relief. He always seemed to come across as a very dedicated, humble Christian no matter what & has given untold sacrifices. Honestly don’t know why or how he comes up with some of the things he says though – like the Alzheimers/divorce issue. And now this. I guess he means unless we get back to God & get our hearts & lives right with Him, it doesn’t matter – which is true.
However, I think it does make a difference about who you elect as President, etc. b/c that will determine what direction you take the nation — more towards God or more away from God and God also judges these things and decides about blessings or curses. I think he’s said as much in the past. Always encouraged voting. Maybe it’s his aging. But glad he’s not endorsing now.
I’ve also noticed the same kind of thing with Billy Graham, no less. Maybe senility? Well, God bless him & help him where necessary – I am grateful for all the helpful ministries to hurting and unsaved ppl over all these many years though – no small feat. Thanks Pat.

I agree with you, Momprayin and like you, I’ve watched him, listened to him, and read some of his works from time to time. He says he is thankful for a forgiving audience. To me, that’s grace. One day, God willing, we will all be older. I’m sure much of what has been going on with Pat is due to the aging process. It is something he cannot help. There are actual chemical changes within the brain and confusion, forgetfulness, lack of good judgment–can occur.

Pat has taught me things over the years, encouraged me–and he has no clue. And I know there are many many MANY more out here like me. He has done some amazing things in his lifetime for God and accomplished a LOT.

In scripture it says that “Love covers a multitude of sins.“ Also that ”Love is patient and kind.” So while this man has made mistakes (who hasn’t?), my words about him will be gracious and kind. I am sure that when Pat meets Jesus in Heaven, Jesus will say to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Pat, thank you for everything you have done, for all your prayers, your kind words–and your heart. May God bless you in whatever you may choose to do next.

Politicians everywhere are breathing a sigh of relief, though sure do wish he’d endorse Palin/Rubio.

What do Christians think of Pat Robertson? I’m not a Christian so I do not much about Pat Robertson.

      I‘m a Christian and I can tell you I think he’s a lunatic. Check out his airlines/diamond mines/illegitimate son past. It’s a hoot.

How are you a Christian godhead, when you write that God would be better if he didn’t make that deaf woman suffer 29 years of deafness? What kind of Christian thinks such things?

      @islesfordian:
“Godhead” is no Christian…just another leftist loser.
And the name was a typo: It should read “Cod Head”

I’ve always viewed him as being a great man, right alongside Jerry Falwell. Both of them get a bad rap. He was an early pioneer in serious television ministry mixing in news and all sorts of programming. I always found him to be doctrinally very sound, quite biblical. I don‘t know how much he has benefited financially from his ministry but I don’t think he has abused it like some of the stories you hear, with the lavish lifestyle and all that.

I was more favorable to robertson than Falwell early on. But my parents became born again through the charismatic movement, and we voted Democrat in those days. So Falwell had a handicap. But as I became politically conservative I saw Falwell has sounder theology, and I became gradually annoyed by the packaged nature of Robertson’s 700Club. It was world’s away better than the PTL Club and I respected Roberstson and boosted him when he ran for President. But I’ve moved on theologically and am even less enchanted by the Protestant charismatic movement of Pentecostalism in general. I still remained possitive toward Robertson, though treating him more as a well meaning slightly senile old uncle. His comments after 911 were emblematic of the kind of enthusiastic mentality that assumes the Spirit is inspiring his thoughts so he doesn’t really check them. But then charismatics/Pentecostals are always looking to see God’s hand in things. I don’t believe any more that such prohetic powers are very common if present at all.

So, he’s one of the good guys, but one who should hang up his hat and take up gardening or something.

Obviously, pothead, you think that Christians have thought very stupid things over the centuries. That’s not the issue. What no Christian has thought is that it is right to fault God for suffering in this world and claim that HE would be better if he stopped the suffering. No Christian would claim to know better than God.

Ergo, you are no Christian. So I don’t really care WHAT you think of historical Christian beliefs. If you want to go there have at it. I am well versed in all the centuries and varieties of Christian teaching.

so now your a christian ,lets go back to first contact.I made a remark about a big guy, that I would bet ,love’s his food, and I also know our current POTUS Wife. wants us to all eat carrots..
doing simple deduction I believe.someone like that, would not have “fatty foods” as a platform
to run on ,that simple. And you and your argumentive spirit ,leveled both barrels at me and unloaded.
I’m not sure where you are comming from, at this point I realy dont care.Your cup is full. Any discusion, on the meriod of topics that we’ve tossed at each other. would be in vain. I hope you find some kind of peace… because your soul is at steak.
I’m sorry that I stooped to a level I havent seen in years.
some habits die hard …and this encounter is not one I’m proud of.

The blended mixture of contemptual comments with a double portion of ltterary loathig, and a pinch of snide remarks.
is the best bread, to serve the “troops of war”..
