Poll: American Jews Favor Muslims & Mormons Much More Than Conservative Evangelical Christians

A new poll indicating that American Jews may have distrust and suspicion for evangelicals is raising eyebrows. The study, conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute, has some startling findings, especially considering the fact that many Jews and Christians have been working together for some time now in support of the Israeli state.
The Jewish Forward has more about the poll’s results:
Only one in five Jewish Americans holds favorable views of those aligned with the Christian right, a category that includes most of Israel’s evangelical supporters. [...]
The survey, conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute and published April 3, asked Jewish respondents to rate the favorability of several religious groups. Mormons received a 47% favorability rating, Muslims 41.4%; the group described as “Christian Right” was viewed in favorable terms by only 20.9% of Jewish Americans. In contrast, the general American population, as shown by other polling data, views evangelicals more favorably than Muslims and Mormons.

These results are sending shock-waves through some faith communities. International Fellowship of Christians and Jews founder and president Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, for one, is stunned, saying that he finds the results both “shocking and concerning.” Eckstein, who has worked diligently to foster Jewish-evangelical relations, isn’t taking the results lightly.
As many people ask why these results are emerging even after years of collaborative work between the two faith communities, some contend that it may be a result of conflicting political inclinations and long-held stereotypes. Some experts also maintain that social conservatism – though it appeals to many Christians — is not palatable to the majority of American Jews.
“Most liberal Jews view the Christian right as wanting to impose a Christian America on them,” explained Marshall Breger, professor at the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law. “To the extent to which the bulk of Jews are liberal, both politically and culturally, they’ll have negative views of the Christian right.”

Eckstein, though, says that he has seen evangelicals become more accepted by Jews over the years.
“In the early years, the Christian right was very, very suspect in the eyes of the Jewish community,” he explained. “When we started giving to the Jewish Agency [for Israel] and the [American Jewish] Joint [Distribution Committee], the Jewish community’s attitude began to change. Evangelicals went from being a pariah to becoming accepted.”
The Forward continues:
This acceptance, however, has not penetrated the liberal Jewish circles or the broader Jewish community, all of which still view friendship to Israel as second in importance to shared social values. “There is a small segment of the Jewish population that loves evangelicals because evangelicals love Israel,” said Michael Cromartie, vice president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, a Washington religious affairs think tank. These Jews focus on the issue of Israel while not “buying into” other values promoted by Christian evangelicals, Cromartie said.
All research points to the sharp contrast between Jews and Christian conservative views on abortions, women rights, gay and lesbian rights, and the separation of religion and state as the key factor distancing the two communities.
Regardless of the reasons behind it, the report states that “Jews hold considerably unfavorable feelings toward members of the Christian Right, significantly more so than toward Mormons or Muslims.” You can read the full report, which included 1,004 self-identified Jews (with a margin of error of +/- 5 percentage points) here.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 10:41amLet‘s take a devil’s advocate position to the comments here, and maybe it would explain some of the reasoning.
@Old White Guy
“american jews are suicidal liberal socialists. they dislike the one group that would take up arms to defend them. fools.”
Nothing screams “We know what’s good for you” more than comments like these. Such comments also yell “We only support you if you agree with us. Turn your backs, and you’re fools, suicidal, and socialists.” With friends like this, who needs enemies?
@NHWinter
“They are concerned about Christians pushing their agenda on America??? They aren’t afraid of Muslims pushing Sharia or Islam on them???”
This is simple to understand. Christians make up the overwhelming majority of religious followers in the US. Muslims are a tiny portion with extremely limited power (we have, what, two Muslim Congressmen?). And Evangelicals do often push for more (Christian) religion in public, tax-payer locations. Remember the furor over Nativity scenes or the prayer mural at the RI high school?
@Johnjamison
“The reasoning behind that is becaquse the Jews know Christian will have their back no matter what.”
Alternately, the reasoning could be because they don’t see these small minority groups trying to dictate religion in the US, unlike Evangelicals.
I’m a Christian myself, but I can understand why Jews would look even at the comments here and go “Uh, yeah, not trustworthy.”

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:37pmSo the Jews prefer the very people (Muslims) who have sworn to eliminate them from the face of the earth.
How rational is that?
They sure are a very peculiar people. That’s for sure.
But if it is true that the majority of Jews are on the left, then it makes some sense, I suppose.
The left is also defending Muslims and prefer them to Christians.
The rigidity of the left is absolute. Nothing interferes with that.
Even for so called leftist Christians, they are not led by Christ but by their ideology.
It is the same with homosexual Christians if there is such a thing in the first place.
Their sex life is more important to them then Christ’s teachings.
When I became a Christian I knew I had to eventually quit smoking, for heavens sake.
I am to be an example of trying to live a pure life.
I know I will fail in that, for sure. But I will also try to do my best in order to bring glory to Christ.
And smoking, drunkenness, adultery, stealing, lying and yes homosexuality do not do this.

“where’s the logic that Muslims, if given the chance, would not force Jews into a firing line like Hitler did?”
Two points. First, as said, Muslims are a tiny minority in the US with no real power. Their numbers may be rising, but it’s much slower than, say, Christians (especially with the influx of Latinos, who are almost all Christian). There’s no realistic danger of Muslims wielding religious dominion over other faiths in the US any time in the near future.
Second, US Muslims are much more moderate than those you’d find in the Middle East. Heck, Muslims outside of the Middle East (which, it should be noted, comprises over 80% of Muslims worldwide) are all pretty chill. In the same way, Jews in the US are much more moderate (religiously, politically, and culturally) than those in Israel. There’s a logical reason for this; in the Middle East, Jews and Muslims are taught to hate each other. In other areas of the world they either don’t interact, or live peacefully (like in the US).
If you’re not brought up in a culture where you learn to dehumanize your “enemy,” it helps you chill out a little. Many US Jews seem to understand that. Which is probably why they get leery when the most conservative Evangelical branches start telling them to shut up and obey them, and that all Muslims are akin to Hitler and will line them up and shoot them if given a chance.

“why don’t you enlighten all of us with the religious practices being forced on Jews by Christian. Why don’t you enlighten us on all mthe hate speech being said about Jews by Christian.”
Christianity is definitely put into the public front, spear-headed by Evangelical Christians. Are you really doubting this? As I said before, trying Nativity scenes, public prayers, prayer murals, etc. Come now. This isn’t even a debate is it?
As for hate speech, where did I mention such a thing? In fact, the first person to mention hate speech is you. So… well done?
“Why don’t you say which group in the U.S is the greatest supporters of the jews rights to live in peace in their holy land. Even though that same Holy land was the birth place of Christanity.”
Evangelicals are definitely vocal in their support of Israel, and I would never deny that. The issue, of course, comes with the attitude shown all too often in comments here: “We support Israel, why don’t Jews support us?” It’s not “free” support from the people who say this. As mentioned by others, many people are doing it not out of good will for the Jews, but out of religious conviction (like you, mentioning Christianity). Even worse they expect repayment: the support of Jewish voters (many of whom have never lived in Israel, nor are they Israeli).
“WHY DON’T YOU PUT OR SHUT UP YA DO UCHE”
Done, and without breaking the profanity filter like you. You’re welcome!

Navity scene and Easter dinners are traditional and no one says that anyone must celebrate either. The fact that most Americans do celebrate them only point out that America is has a majority Christian population. If that is thought to be a precieved threat to the Jewish community then it only points out that Jews are religious bigots. It also might point a a resentment with in the community for Christian telling their role in the death of Christ.
In a subconcious way it actually might be form of anti-semitism that manfests itself as a resentment towards Christian.
But to rather side with islam politically is the defintion of insanity in as far as Islam would see JEW purged from the earth.

something doesn’t sit right with this…
i’d say its like those polls last week that seemed “skewed” in the opposite direction than what common sense would dictate.
If the admin can jump in and throw mis – info into polls, is it any wonder that an un-educated society wouldn’t jump on board? Well, you can see from the actions of the “jews” over the past several years.
They voted for Obammy, they are caught up in all the social issues (usually on the wrong side)….
silverman tweets about the abortion thing….
there is definitely a “spirit” that these folks “hold on to” when you would think they would be turning from these ways, and yearning back to God.
it is an enigma…. but it has to do with those “spiritual” things that man (jew & gentile) has chosen to embrace, instead of being restored unto The Creator through Yeshua…..
yes, you would think the people who claim chosen status to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob would be more in sync with Evangelical folks….
(Torah / Bible believing folks that understand our “place” under dominion of YhWh, The Creator, through Salvation through His Son Yeshua,
by way of revelation through the Holy Spirit / Ruach HaKodesh)
But we pray that they will all come together, Jew & Gentile and enter into His Kingodom!
Be Bless’d in Yeshua!

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 1:41pmBro Chuck… If one accepts the “season of time” that we are in it is not that surprising nor an enigma. Because of our fallen nature apostasy is happening in all Faiths that honor the One True Lord. This was prophesied so it must occur. Our elder brothers have repeated this time and again so the Lord chastised them to bring them back to His ways and is in the process of doing so again. In addition to that is the distrust, which is warranted, built up by ‘our’ history of blaming and persecuting them for rejecting the Messiah instead of looking at it from a more humble acceptance that it had to be done to fulfill His Word as prophesied, and that His Sacrifice was necessary for all. Fast and pray that all who love the Lord of Hosts will recognize the times we live in and will repent and return to the Lord.

The poll is intentionally misleading because it’s definition of Jew is far too general. A person born to a non-Jewish family and who never converted could be counted as a Jew simply because they “self-identify” as one. People born Jewish but have rejected nearly all their heritage barring the fact that they are Jewish would be considered as Jewish as a Rabbi with the OU. Without further clarity, this poll is utterly useless.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:31pmTo me it makes sense if you think about it this way: Jews grow up with the understanding that they are a “covenant people” and that God requires them to not only believe a certain way, but also to live by a set of, often strict, rules. Both Muslims and Mormons, generalized as groups, are good not only at “talking the talk” according to what they believe, but also “walking the walk”. Even if someone makes fun of them for it, you expect a Muslim, a Mormon, and Jew to act in the way their religion requires. A lot of people see that as something to respect.
With Evengelicals, I think the stereotype is more that they’ll be religious on the Sabbath, but the rest of the week . . .
It might be a perception issue.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 10:16amYou’re generalizing (then again so did the poll). Fact is there are Jew-hating Christians and in a country that is so overwhelmingly Christian one is more likely to encounter one of these antisemites than they are to encounter a radical Muslim. Personally I find the poll misleading since it fails to make any distinction between secular and religious Jews. For example, I am a religious Jew. I once went to get a haircut and the person cutting my hair said he was also Jewish but hadn’t been religiously involved for a long time. Anybody who passes me on the street knows I’m Jewish, but even I could not have guessed that this man was Jewish. The poll here would make no distinction.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 10:03amAnd the muslims won’t impose their faith on them. No sane Christian organization, or and proper Christian has imposed or will impose Christianity on anyone. To be a Christian it is free will not at the point of a sword. Let us see, Christian America supported and Supports Israel.
Oh well We can’t convince all.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 10:02amI think the key word in this report is the word liberal. The liberals in this country are the me first, let me do what I want people and that includes the liberal American Jews.
Personally I don’t care what the liberal Jews feel about conservative/evangelical Christians. I stand with Israel because God said to and what He thinks of me is much more important that what the individual Jew thinks.
I do find it troubling that there is a 41.4% favorability rating for the Muslim religeon in this poll. Apparently like most liberals they may be educated but they are not very smart.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 10:07amSo you don’t think people should be able to do what they want? They should do what YOUR god wants… so their perception that evangelicals want to impose Christianity is kind of accurate by your standards.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 10:53amI live by the same values you do for the most part. The only real difference between us is I don‘t want things that don’t hurt anyone but themselves to be policed. The reason is, if they do live the life they want and get caught, they get to rot in prison (on our dime) and when they‘re released they can’t support themsevles because no one will hire them. Creating an endless cycle of lawlessness with no real chance they’ll hit rock bottom and reform themselves. It just exacerbates the problems.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 9:59amthis doesn’t surprise me at all. i mean come on. look who voted for Obama in droves in 2008! he loves the Muslims, so they cast their votes accordingly. American Jews are quite different from the rest of their countrymen. they are so far removed from the problems of Jews around the globe, they are not living in reality. they should be careful what they wish for. when the Muslim Brotherhood comes looking for them here in the US, they will go crying to the conservative evangelicals to protect them. time will tell.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 9:55amWhy are Mormons and Muslims lumped together ?
Report Post »As far as I can tell . . .No Mormons helped Hitler kill Jews . . .
Are Jews truly more afraid of Christians than killer Muslims . . .?
Iknow It is possible to cook the books on these polls and this one seems to prove the slant built in . . .

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 2:09pmI agree. The Book of Mormon is a fairy tale as far as I am concerned but it is in no way whatsoever to be compared to the evil and brutality advocated in the Koran. Mormons are a peace loving, hard woking, family oriented people who do not leach off of any government programs and are patriotic. We have something called the 1st Amendment which protects Mormons too. As for Muslims, I don’t want to get nasty and forget that we DO have a 1st Amendment.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 9:56amIt’s the liberal brainwashing and being isolated in the liberal bubble. Not all of us think like that. I don’t, anyway. Most Jews who aren‘t liberal don’t feel like that. As with nearly everything else, most liberals are just very narrow minded and bigoted.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 9:44amYou would think that the Jewish community would do their homework and see the truth. However, they didn’t in Nazis Germany until it was too late. Denial appears to be a strong trait in their thought process. They’ll wake up–eventually. But will it be too late again?
