SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer has widened her lead over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, according to a Field Poll released Friday.
The survey showed Boxer leading Fiorina 47 percent to 41 percent, with 12 percent of voters undecided. A July Field Poll showed Boxer with support from 47 percent of voters, compared to 44 percent for Fiorina, a gap that was within that poll’s margin of error.
“I would surmise much of this has to do with the advertising that the Boxer campaign has done,” Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo said. “It has had the intended effect.”
Boxer enjoyed a 12-to-1 cash advantage over Fiorina in the latest campaign reports, made public early in the summer.
Boxer began running advertisements Sept. 13, the day before polling began for the survey, while Fiorina did not launch her first statewide TV ad until Thursday. Boxer opened with a television ad highlighting her accomplishments in Congress, then released an ad accusing Fiorina of enriching herself as a corporate executive while laying off thousands of workers at Hewlett-Packard Co. and shipping jobs overseas.
Fiorina‘s first ad of the general election attacks Boxer’s “arrogance” when she asked an Army Corps of Engineers general during a committee hearing to call her “senator,“ rather than ”ma’am.”
The poll surveyed 857 registered voters from Sept. 14 to Sept. 21 and has a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points. Among likely voters, the poll has a sampling error of 5.8 percentage points.
For Fiorina supporters, the November election is shaping up as a referendum on Boxer, who is seeking a fourth term in the Senate.
Two-thirds of Fiorina’s supporters said they are motivated more by their dislike of Boxer than their enthusiasm for Fiorina.
Unlike GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, who has made inroads with women and Hispanics, Boxer has maintained the lead among those groups. Likely female voters favor Boxer 46 percent to 40 percent. The senator has 48 percent support among likely Hispanic voters, compared to 29 percent for Fiorina.
That means Fiorina will have to get independent voters to turn out for her in November, DiCamillo said. The Field Poll found independents favoring Boxer 46 percent to 40 percent over Fiorina, with 14 percent of them undecided.
“The path to success for Fiorina will probably be somewhat different than for Whitman,” DiCamillo said. “Fiorina has less of an opportunity just because her stances really run counter to where most Democrats are. In my judgment, she’s going to have to win nonpartisans by double-digit margins.”
Democrats have a registration edge in California of about 13 percentage points.

Report Post »Why do people vote the same and expect a different result? Some people do not understand “how” our branches of government work, that is why they blamed the republicans in 2008 because Bush was president, not understanding the Dems were in charge of the Congress since 2006.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 8:18amRight, and Boxer has clearly demonstrated that she’s fit for duty. Her “emotional outburst” to a general was nothing of the sort. Her state is racked with crime, debt, contracting economy, and illegal imigrants. In DC, she has voted religiously to expand the role of the state in your life, to saddle future and unborn generations with the financial obligation to fund her purchase of votes, and turned a blind eye to the constitution she’s allegedly sworn to uphold.
Makes complete sense to me.

I hope you are correct about not being fooled again, but McCain won his primary in AZ. For every Tea Party candidate victory, there are still more RINOs that need to be replaced. If Boehner gets to be speaker of the house, that is not much better than Pelosi.
Californians dumped Davis and brought in Arnold who didn’t do anything significantly different than
Davis. The state is still facing bankruptcy. After generations of progressives dumbing down the education system, can we expect the American voter to be smart?
Too many people see the sign of George W. saying “Do you miss me yet?” and say YES! Bush made Obama possible and Obama’s policies are just Bush policies on steroids. Going back to a Bush style RINO will not restore our republic and bring back a small constitutional government.

I do know that if I was asked I would say “I don‘t believe that is anybody’s business” and leave the poller’s with an undecided response. I would like to think that we will see an increasing number of people giving an “I don‘t believe that is anybody’s business” response to really keep the left and the right not knowing which way to turn. Then come November’s vote we wipe the slate clean, and those incumbents can go become couch potatoes, and watch the rest of us move forward.

Good signs ahead! (I know, polls aren’t always accurate, but a quick drive around the state will also find a lot more LePage than Mitchell signs. LePage fans are very excited about the election)
Unfortunately, neither Snowe nor Collins are up for re-election this year, but I think the tides are turning up here in vacationland.

Did they ask 857 registered Democrats or what? Maybe they could only find 857 registered voters in a week. Out of all those voters polled only 47% want Boxer and the Democrats have 13% more registered voters than the Republicans. Out of this small sample 12% can’t decide (or don’t care, or wouldn’t talk to the pollster). There have been enough people comment in this column in favor of Fioina to push this over the top.
