Poll: For First Time, Majority of Republicans Support Third Party

According to a Gallup poll released today, for the first time a majority of Republicans think that the U.S. needs a third political party.

The Hill has more:

A majority of Republicans said for the first time that a third party was needed in American politics, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.

Fifty-two percent of Republicans, and an even stronger number of Tea Party supporters, support the creation of a major, third political party, underscoring the occasional tensions between grassroots conservatives and the GOP establishment.

An overall majority of Americans, 52 percent, said that a third political party was needed; the most profound shift has come among Republicans.

The number of Republicans who said that a third political party was necessary was at an all-time high since Gallup first began tracking opinion on the issue in 2003. And while support for a third party has crept steadily upward in the GOP, for the first time, it represents a majority opinion.

Supporters of the Tea Party are even more likely to back a third party, the poll found. Sixty percent of Tea Party supporters back a third party, while 32 percent say the existing two parties are adequate. By contrast, 47 percent of Tea Party opponents said the bipartisan system is adequate, and 44 percent favored a third party.

Who might lead this third party? Well, in the past, Sarah Palin has voiced her support for a third party. “If they start straying, then why not a third party?”

Your name says it all. I was to the point of believing that nobody felt as I do. 2010 shows that together we can make a difference. Now with renewed enthusiasm, I am diligent in knowing candidates from city hall, judges ( yes i griped about liberal judges and finally realized I was putting no effort into finding out who they were), school board, city council, to the white house. I work harder than ever at educating myself and making informed votes. When the time comes I pray that we have each other’s back.

I made the mistake of writng him off in 2008 because the media told me he could not win, but if he is the best candidate (which I truly believe he is) then we should not let others tell us who can or can’t win.

I 100% agree. I have never been a registered R or D… I’ve always been an Independent. My 1st vote was for Ross Perot. Yes that didn’t work, but for the reasons everyone here seems to think. Elite Republicans never really wanted to end big government. They just wanted to be in control of it. I gave GW Bush a chance. He!!. I even gave Clinton and Obama the benefit of the doubt. I never voted for either one. However the Repub party has 1 more chance in 2012 to prove to me they really want to save this country. After that all bets are off. If the powers that be give me another RINO 2 vote for. I’ll vote for a Dumbocrat in 2016. The most virulent Communist I can find. That way they finish off the old republic. So, we can start over. This IS the final straw for me. Maybe if we have a communist destroy all the wealth of these RINO backers. I won’t have put up with them throwing their money behind people that just want lick their boots for them.

I have VERY mixed emotions about a 3rd party but one thing I think SHOULD be on every ballot is “none of the above” and if “none of the above” won then no candidate that was on the ballot should be eligible to run in a re-run.
Also I believe run-off elections should be held for EVERY federal office so that no-one serves with less than 50% of the vote

A third party could be the only option. Although the Tea Party does well to support REAL Republicans, we’ve been tricked one more than one occasion. Remember Scott Brown? We got our hopes up when he got elected, then found out the hard way that he was just another RINO, voting with the Socialist Democrats every chance he gets.

They say that a third party won’t work, as the split between true conservatives and “old school” Republicans (Lindsay Graham, John McCain, etc.) will end up giving more votes to the Dems. I’m not so sure about that. And besides, what other options do we have?

we need more of these kinds of black people

really, nobody hates black people simply because they re black.. in fact, the skin color has really nothing to do with it, even for the most die hard of “racists”

its the destructive influence by the groups you mentioned over the lives of our family members, sons, daughters, wives, fathers, mothers, society, culture, and nation that we hate.

of course, we all know thats not all of them.. in fact, i think everyone here likes the black guys in the 20‘s to 40’s eras where they were quick with a joke, sharp wit, witty, humorous, cordial, friendly, helpful, smiling, positive, service-minded, fellowshipping, etc

but thats really few to none these days

the racism and hate coming from the black community has nothing to do with slavery or the lives of their parents or grand parents, or even great grand parents, as those people we all in a classs of friendly black folk.. granted, maybe they had to work hard to break down walls and get people to trust them, etc..

but now that those walls are down, the black people are assailing and accosting, and belittling, and taking every advantage afforded them over the white people, even going so far as to actually turn the tables and be far more racist towards whites than whites ever were towards blacks

they have influenced our mainstream society negatively since the 1990′s, that now the white people are now equally as degenerate in many places. its not black and white anymore,

Well that’s just great. What we really need in 2012 is a GOP party and a Conservative Party.

Why don’t we just cancel the 2012 elections and just hand the victory to Barack Obama?

What is wrong with Conservatives? We have the GOP party already established. It is not that hard to run candidates who are Conservative against “RINO” candidates IN THE PRIMARIES. I swear, sometimes we are our own worst enemy. The liberals are reading this story and this poll and laughing at how foolish we are and how easy it will be to keep Obama in office.

2012 is the drop dead year. If we do not defeat Obama in 2012, then the Obama Health Care plan will be fully established and running in 2013. Once that happens, we are completely CONTROLLED by the government in all aspects of our life.

Please get some sense America. 2012 is not the time for a third party.

That’s the only way that the Republican party will be of use to the constitutional and fiscally conservative TEA Party people. We really do not need the WH next election. Just to correct the misconception regarding Obama as Presidency. Even if we do get a veto proof Congress in both Houses, Obama has shown that he does not have a problem making executive orders become law without Congressional approval. Look at what he is doing with regard to the EPA. He is enacting Cap and Trade without Congress taking a single vote. He is using the new Offshore Minerals Management Service led by Bromwich to shut down offshore drilling in the Gulf…….without Congressional approval.

Obama is ruling by fiat and is bypassing Congress. He needs to go if we have a chance to restore America back to a free nation.

I understand the fear. I have “worked within the party” on the local level for the better part of 25 years. I have believed all my life that we must do so to prevent the liberals from getting more and more power. I have basically held my nose and voted for the Republican for 6 presidential elections not because I thought they were the best for the job, but because I was afraid of the Dems. I am now sick and tired of having to hold my nose in the voting booth! One thing I have found is this, the vast majority of people can talk a great game, but when it comes to working for it, even if it is just to get out and vote, they fall back into lazy silence. If the Republicans cannot raise up a true conservative candidate during the next round of primaries, I don’t know if I have the stomach to swallow my principles and hold my nose again! A third party is looking more and more attractive to me, IF IT IS TRULY CONSERVATIVE!

Like any of this matters, we are screwed no matter what happens, period. Time to get real and stop dreaming. The problems are just too complex for any party to cure at this stage. I think that we are in a “hanging on by fingernails” point. The blame is not the Libs or Repubs, it is the apathy of the citizenry that destroyed this once great country. Dreaming of a political saviour is just plain foolish. Just looks at the fact, National Debt, 1 in 7 on food-stamps, manufacturing gone, illiterate populace, never ending wars, over-reaching federal government…blah blah blah…. What we have is an Oligarchy that makes Socialism look good. Nothing we are doing remotely resembles socialism.

The electorate gave the rinos a super majority in the “house of representatives” in 2010 with mandate to put a stop to obama’s efforts to drive the US into national bankruptcy and to repeal obamacare… But, alas… the rinos have done nothing but “cave in” to obama’s demands… If we elect more rinos in 2012, things will be no different… The rinos think they can vote like dimocrats and we, the conservative voters, will have no choice but to vote for them as a “lesser evil”…

It is time for a 3rd political party to elect senators and representatives that will vote as the electorate wishes… Are you up to it Tea Party???

Can’t you see? This next election may be the last one. Both major parties are bleeding America dry. It all started when the global politicians started to give away America’s industries and started turning this country into service jerks. Then they finally turned the service industries over to countries all over the world. We have lost our ability to lead the world. Both parties have done this. We are now faced with a communist/markist/socialist/anarchist wave that will surely take America down because people are not sure who the good guys are and who the bad gurys are. People are looking for something that is not there. Look at the last election. We need REAL AMERICANS now! We need people who are serious and brave enough to stand up for what is right, and not back off. Pray for America!!

Historically, third parties fail. It will be easier to unseat RINOs through primaries with solid Conservative opponents than making a third party palatable to enough Citizens to change the political landscape. For all the so-called independent voters out there, how many are from the Independent Party? In Congress, I think there might be one or two. Maybe a handful more in the state houses.

The Pubs have the full apparatus in place, where any new party would have to start from scratch with almost no reach. Better, I think, for Conservatives to wrest control of the Pub Party from the elitist establishment Beltway RINOs, send them into retirement or over to the Dems, and keep people like Congressman West.

It’ll take time, but be a lot faster than trying to build a movement from the ground-up.

As I expected. This is nothing more than PROPAGANDA from the liberal media. I went to the Gallup website and found this gem regarding this poll.

PRINCETON, NJ — Fifty-two percent of Americans believe the Republican and Democratic parties do such a poor job of representing the people that a third party is needed. Forty percent believe they do an adequate job. The percentage calling for a third party is down from August, when it tied its high of 58%.
      http://www.gallup.com/poll/147461/Support-Third-Party-Dips-Majority-View.aspx?utm_source=tagrss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=syndication&utm_term=Politics

The percentage of people wanting a 3rd Party is dropping. But……..the liberal media is spreading this story in an attempt to gin up support for a third party CONSERVATIVE candidate.

WE THE PEOPLE have to rise up and declare our independence from our government. Government has become too big and too oppressive…as such it cannot fix itself. IT IS THE PROBLEM. The whole system is broken and corrupt. Most people do not want to hear such talk…but the facts are the facts. We have to take back our country. The Founders warned us of letting the government get to big. Its called tyranny. And that is also why they gave us the 2nd Amendment. Because they knew we would need to have arms in order to take back a government that had become too big and thus tyrannical. NOT AN ELECTION…

Ron Paul WANTS to adhere to our Founders’ vision of a government of, by, and for the people – a Constitutional Republic (NOT a Democracy). And our Founders knew what they were talking about, having escaped a government by central planning, themselves.

And regarding his statement about Sharia law technically being allowable by the will of the people; while that position of his is definitely unConstitutional (because it necessarily violates the principle of individual liberty), remember that his position is also supposed to be understood in the context of States taking their Constitutional authority back, abolishment of all foreign aid and redistributional programs and departments, abolishment of the fed, etc. In that context, you could have a community of Muslims and the police would understand that they are not allowed to restrict the freedom of religion of anyone coming to live in that area.

And like I’ve said before, Ron Paul, being the Constitutionalist he is, will WANT to hear opposing views and argue – like he’s always done – for or against the Constitutional merits of any legislation.

Ron Paul respects government of, by, and for the people, and he has done so consistently.

Remember what happened when Perot ran as a third party candidate ? The Republican Party leaders certainly do. So the main objective should be to REFORM the Republican Party from within, keeping the “independents” and “moderates” who turned AGAINST the Dems last November on their side. Otherwise, the Republican leadership risk taking a “pass” on regaining the WH by alienating the “TEA Party” voters (which is much larger than the RINOs, Dems, and MSM will ever admit), thereby handing these unworthy progressive Democrat weasels an undeserved victory.

Between Obama’s incompetent and openly destructive agenda, and the “progressive” Dem’s dismal record over the past 4 years (resulting in the worst deficits, most prolonged ULTRA-HIGH period of unemployment, TRULY bad inflation , and loss of American wealth in the history of our nation ! ) the election is ours to lose. Just hope and pray the Senate and House Republican leadership is wise and patriotic enough to make the right choices from here on out…. otherwise, this unqualified and incpompetent excuse for a President WILL gain a second term, which essentially DOOMS the Republic.

Then, after the country essentially goes bankrupt, AND STOPS BUYING OFF THE NON-PRODUCTIVE ELEMENT of American society (the Democrats’ constituency), a terrible Civil War is a REAL possibility if this happens, I fear.

A new party is the only way We the People will be heard…

You ever asked yourself why we stopped transforming and creating new parties….The Republican party was formed as the result of leaving the Whig party….Democrats formed the same way….It has occurred numerous times until the last 100+ years….

The only ones not wanting to leave the Republican Party are those at the top and those who really believe the Republicans are for them…The principles and values of today‘s Republican Party are no way near what the Party’s first P‘s and V’s were….Look for yourself…

If We the People truly believe we are going to transform and fix our nation back to the Founder’s vision by voting Republican or Democrat, we are done, finished, game over….Picking one liar over another liar is simply picking a liar…We will never kick out those who have hijacked the Republicans, just ask the Progressives aka Democrats…You can’t share a name and expect someone to tell you apart….

Ron Paul is one who year after year tells truth, stays consistent and gives Americans an option to live in freedom and prosperity as our founders intended….Ron Paul needs to lead this new party…Herman Cain I’m sure would join as with a few others…It will only happen if We the People ask for it…

Again, if we the people continue down this path of liar vs liar, we are over..

Yes we need a third party.

When small govt constitutionalists and libertarians are constantly ignored and big govt sell-outs in the GOP refuse to bend to the will of the people, the party is over. Conservatives keep hyping the same old line:

      1) Big Govt foreign military intervention, foreign aid
      2) Big Govt war on drugs
      3) Interfering with the Free Market through the tax code
      4) Interfering with the Free Market through corporate incentives
      5) Interfering with Individual Freedom through “pro-family” laws
      6) Interfering with Individual Freedom with drug prohibition, helmet laws, drinking age
      7) More and more spending.

Either the OLD GOP shuts up and leaves or I’m leaving the GOP.

@cheezwiz – you seem to be confusing conservative with right wing nutjob. I get sick of all you Blazers calling yourself conservative. Far right evangelical hatemongers are NOT conservatives. I am more conservative than most of you combined. (I know there a a very small portion of Blazers who have a brain so I won’t denigrate you all).

We can keep two parties if we first get rid of all career politicians, lobbyists, earmarks, and criminals from our government. Next turn everything except border control, CDC and military back to states to take care of. No more health care, education, and regulations that are choking our economy.

I’m sure the dems would love to see third party to split the conservative vote, and the establishment republicans, RINO’s and moderates are too STUPID to see the handwriting on the wall.

Ron Paul would make third parties like the Libertarian and Independent parties run a half assed or non-existent campaign, guaranteed. He is the only Republican that will take those votes and win against Obama in 2012.

There is no conservative partym, the republicans are just trying the waters again.
They think conservative is freedom of choice when it comes to abortions, all should get married , its those very issues that are called morals n pricipals, if you dont live by them you dont work by them. Kinda like Newt Gingrich and marriage. Conservative is conservative, not maybe
Start a third party not independant but a Conny Pac Party.
Of course with Obamas S 673 He will be dictator incharge and there will be no senate or congress, but his 200 unapointed czars and His pen Dictator inChief, Then we will have to kill Him

I agree, we need a conservative party. Honestly, when the Republicans throw a McCain at us and claim him to be conservative. Come on! I don’t want another Bush, or another McCain or a Romney. I want to vote for a true statesman that has real values and real courage. Sure there are a couple of good Republicans in the Senate and House, but look what their party does to them when they try to run. Look how they mutilated Ron Paul. It was sickening to watch the debates where they ridiculed the only man deserving our vote. Sorry Republican Party, you can go hang out with your Democrat friends. Just because both the Democrats & Republicans throw two pieces of worthless crap at us does not mean I have to take it. If I vote the lesser of two evils, then I would be voting for evil. Instead, I generally vote Constitution Party because at least their platform represents my values.

I agree. A third party will not work. Many have been tried, and all are political non-factors. Even if there is notable support, it will only serve to splinter the Republican Party, which will hand the Democrats another White House win.

Political parties should be abolished or at the very least mad inconsequential by taking the money out of running for political office. No political party can withstand the corrupting influence of large amounts of money. I trust individuals, not parties. If there were a Democrat, who did all the right things and was truly the best person for the job, I would vote for him. It’s HIS platform that matters to me, not the party he supposedly represents.

You made the perfect case for a third party. The repubs that now control the house clearly show the American people that once elected nothing changes. I see no difference. Business as usual. We kick the bums out and then we re-elected the same bums again. So what is the solution to end the musical chair game. Third party.

I am with Zorro and Cobra. We need to take the power away from the RINO sellouts. We elect them, then they sc^re w us over. The TEA party is big enough to take both the GOPs and the progs out. It is now or never. But, I can see how many are scared that it will split the vote and put the dems back in. That is a valid argument. But I think WE can take em’.

Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. After winning 65 new seats in Congress, would the Tea Party really want to make itself the friend of the Democrats? Doesn’t anyone remember Ross Perot? Clinton would not have been President, but for Perot. Sarah Palin has been, in the past, smart enough to understand that a third party would only be good news for the Left. Hopefully, she hasn’t lost sight of that, and can put this matter to rest.

A third party would only insure victory for Obama in 2012. The Republican Party should work hard to straighten out its members in Congress. Get rid of all RINO;S. They soon should come up with a viable candidate, not the same tired old candidates that they have been putting forth. It is imperitive that Obama be defeated. Visit WEBPATRIOTICSERVICES.COM. We do so need a third party system..

there is no other way to move forward with a true conservative agenda. the people currently in the GOP are not ever going to do the right things we elected them to do, and the control from the roves, romney’s, etc etc are just old guard wolves in nice little conservative clothing…..they are not real, and they have no intention of bringing true fiscally or socially conservative changes to this nation.

you can also tell they are very, very afraid of us……as in their posturing over the last few weeks….”well, we will run mitch daniels, or christie, or ……lo and behold, one of them even MR. LIBERAL HIMSELF-MORT ZUCKERMAN….last night on O’reilly-doing everything he and his stupid NY Neespaper could do to trash the DONALD……….says,…………………..

HE SAYS, “OH AND I WOULD CERTAINLY SUPPORT JEB BUSH” ya think????????why of course……they can’t make any of the others stick so far…. so i gvie it six or eight weeks before they hook of Jeb to some life support system and carry him out on stage……….

but i predict that in many of us…………………………………….THEY WILL FIND NO TAKERS…………THEY ARE SO STUPID THEY STILL DON’T GET IT…..WE DO NOT WANT THEM……………………..WE ARE SMART ENOUGH, BRIGHT ENOUGH, AND PASSIONATE ENOUGH ABOUT SAVING OUR NATION TO PICK AND CHOOSE OUR OWN.

SO , PLEASE BRING ON THE THRID PARTY IT CAN’T BE SOON ENOUGH!!!!

Put up a true ULTA-CONSERVATIVE Republican and I will give me vote.

Until then, to hell with both parties…I vote Libertarian/Constitutionalist/Independent or NOTHING. And ‘nothing’ IS a vote — a vote of no-confidence. And dont give me this song and dance about voting for the lesser of two evils. I vote my convictions — either I give my blessing or I dont — I dont “sort-of”.

Well, where do you want us to go? If we agree on economic issues but disagree on social issues such as Abortion, Gay Marriage or Prohibition of drugs, how can we work together to get rid of the worst President in History? We’ve got to work together!!! The sky is falling and we are in danger of losing our country to the COMMUNISTS but most conservatives are unwilling to put social issues on the back burner to prevent this divide from occurring within the Tea Party. Can‘t we agree that the Economic Disaster of Obama’s Spending and Totalitarian Out of Control Regulation plus the horrible Obamacare should be the primary focus? Glenn Beck appologized to Penn Jillette telling him that he will stick to Faith. Glenn says Ayn Rand is a fine thinker except for her Godlessness. Well, there are a lot of Godless people who are still patriots – research Ethan Allen, Glenn. Libertarians are not immoral, neither are humanists. I think that the Conservatives underestimate the number of people who would vote Republican if we could stick with the worst problem facing our country since its founding wich is SOCIALISM. If sincere, thinking people, who are for limited Government, Low Taxes, Fewer Regulations and greater individual freedom AND RESPONSIBILITY; are told to hit the road because they strongly disagree with taking away social freedoms and they still oppose Obama, they are forced to find another voice. There is no mal-intent here WE’VE GOT TO FIX THIS NOW!!!

You know brother u may right brother but the problem I see is that some of the republicans just have a strangle hold on establishment GOP VOTERS. also, it’s unrealistic to think that we can just take over the GOP, the establishment is powerful and has the cash, I agree with you for now but if these Establishment Repubics, (that’s right I said it RE-pub-ics) don’t change I think we may have to consider. I would consider 3rd party the NUCLEAR OPTION

It isn’t that a third party is bad. It gives the people who are dissatisfied with the Dems and Reps a place to hang their hats. In the congress and senate, this leads to coalition building that can make a coalition stronger than a single party.

However, if it comes to running a t person presidential race verses a 3 person race, then we would be in trouble. The two conservative candidates should have a run-off to see who is the more viable and he less viable should bow out giving support to the other conservative.
