Poll: Majority of Mississippi’s Likely GOP Voters Believe Barack Obama is a Muslim

Questions surrounding Barack Obama’s faith have been never-ceasing since his 2008 presidential campaign. First, there were the Rev. Jeremiah Wright concerns. Then, there were the Muslim allegations (i.e. the notion that Obama was secretly hiding a supposed Islamic faith allegiance). But for the past couple of years, the main focus of skepticism about the president’s religious adherence has been questioning surrounding how strongly he truly aligns himself with the Christian faith.

Last Month, Rev. Franklin Graham (son of famed evangelist Billy Graham) apologized after refusing to say that Obama is a Christian during televised interviews on MSNBC and CNN. This, of course, came just days after Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum also questioned Obama’s understanding of Biblical faith. Now, just one day before primaries in Alabama and Mississippi it seems it‘s not just public figures who have questions about the president’s perception of a higher power.
In a poll released today, Public Policy Polling presented some startling results to questions asked of likely GOP voters in both of these states. When Republicans in Alabama were asked, ”Do you think Barack Obama is a Christian or a Muslim, or are you not sure?,“ 45 percent said ”Muslim,“ 14 percent said ”Christian“ and 41 percent selected ”not sure.” In Mississippi, the results among Republicans are even more surprising, with 52 percent saying Muslim, 12 percent say Christian and 36 percent claim that they aren’t sure.

In addition to these findings, only 26 percent of likely Republican voters in Alabama believe in evolution, with 60 percent saying they don‘t and an additional 13 percent claiming they aren’t sure. In Mississippi, the proportion believing in the theory dropped to 22 percent, with 66 not accepting it and 11 percent claiming uncertainty.
Sixty-eight percent of likely GOP voters in Alabama are evangelicals, with 70 percent of Mississippi voters reporting the same. One of the most startling findings is that only 54 percent of Mississippi GOP voters believe that interracial marriage should be legal (the poll shows 29 percent saying it should be illegal). The margin of error for the Mississippi poll was +/-3.8 percent; for the Alabama poll it was +/-4.0 percent.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 2:22pmI get so sick of evolution being used as the measuring stick for intelligence when really it is the measuring stick of conformity…
While natural selection cannot be denied, evolution is quite debatable…
By this I mean that horses clearly changed over time from having 5 toes to 4 toes to 3 toes to 2 toes to a hoof. But the sudden and drastic changes necessary to transform a creature from one species to another has never been explained.
Darwin called these changes “saltations” and declared evolution “unproved and unprovable” until fossil evidence for these saltations was found. Almost 200 years and millions of fossil discoveries later they are still unexplained.
One could certainly make the argument that they are caused by God.
The most intriguing evidence in favor of evolution is the development of a human embryo which seems to mimic lower life forms as it develops. This is hardly proof that we actually evolved from these lower life forms though as they could just as easily be stages of development that all beings share and higher life forms progress through only in embryonic form.
It does not prove we once were tadpoles. Saying that it does is to deny the possibility that there is some knowledge we are missing or that our perspective on the matter cannot be skewed.
It would be like saying the Earth is flat or the sun revolves around the Earth, just look we can see it so it is therefore proven.
Evolution is possible, but certainly not proven.

Nevertheless, Barack Hussein Obama was born a Muslim, was educated as a Muslim in Indonesia, and of course he is a Muslim now. He supported his cousin in Kenya (a radical Islamist fighting to implement Shariah law). He supports Muslim Brotherhood everywhere (in Libya, Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia, Syria). He became a “Christian” and joined Black Liberation so-called “Christian” church only because of political convenience. Besides, his so-called “Christian” church gave Life-Time Achievement Award to Louis Farakhan, with whom Barack Obama organized One Million March on Washington, btw. He is celebrating every Muslim holiday in the White house, but not Christian holidays. Not sure he knows about them at all, but he quotes Quran.
If he talks like a Mulsim, if he walks like a Muslim, of course he is a Muslim…

False. It’s the name on his long-form birth certificate. It doesn’t get much more “birth name” than the name you legally get at birth.
“He went to a Muslim school in Kenya.”
False. Maybe half-truth. He attended a secular school and a Catholic school while living in Jakarta (which is Indonesia, not Kenya). The secular school had a majority Muslim population.
“He went to a Muslim church for over 20 years.”
Not even sure what this is supposed to refer to. Closest I can guess is Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the church the Obamas attends for almost 2 decades. Problem is, Reverend (note the title) Wright is a Baptist minister. He may be liberal or for black liberation, but he’s definitely a Christian minister.
“He recites the Qaaran…”
Report Post »Define “recites.” As in he prays with it? Nope. Sworn in on it? Nope. Goes to mosques? Nope. Can he quote some of it? Probably. So can anyone who’s studied Islam. For example, applying to you: “Truly Allah guides not one who transgresses and lies.” Surah 40:28.

” Is it wrong to be a Muslim? Why are you so vehemently denying that Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim? Why do you care?”
Because I don’t like ignorance. I believe America should be founded on truth, and I have a fundamental respect for truth. That‘s why I don’t support Obama: he’s lied to the country. But I call him out on his broken promises; I don’t make up things about his religion.
On the other hand, you DO feel he’s a Muslim. He doesn’t attend mosque, he doesn’t pray to Mecca, he wasn’t sworn in on the Bible. But because his father was Muslim (non-practicing, according to his biography) and he was raising in a majority Muslim country, you think he’s a Muslim?
He celebrates Christmas every year, he attended a Christian church for 20 years, he’s referenced God more in the first 3 years than Bush had in eight… but he’s not a Christian?
Michael, you’re the one deluding yourself. You might be an atheist, but God still lights truth; I guarantee you won’t get much more than a sun tan if you come into the light :-)

His mother denounced her and Barack’s United States citizenship, they both took Indonesian citizenship, and Barack’s name was changed to “Barry Soetoro” when he lived in Indonesia.
Read his books, for goodness sake. He took his old name back later on in the USA.
Probably, being a citizen of Indonesia could disqualify Barack Obama from running for President (altough his mother did it to him, but he should get his citizenship back through Naturalization process just like other immigrants), but it has nothing to do with his birth.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 4:09pm@MICHAEL61 – Following your logic, that would mean that I am still a Christian. I was baptized to please my grandparents and attended Sunday school for the first 10 years of my life, but at 10 years old, I had enough intelligence to realize that religion was not for me and didn’t like hearing some of the hate and judgement that was coming at us from the pulpit. I decided at 10 years old that I did not believe in any god. Since 1980 I have NOT attended church except for the occasional wedding or funeral. I have been an Athiest for 31 years, I almost died and was in the hospital for 8 weeks, at which time I NEVER prayed to a god that I did not believe in. Do you think that I am still a Christian? And besides, the only Muslims that are gaining any attention are the nut-job, right-wingers who are trying to push their beliefs on other people, much like the nut-job, right-wing Christians in OUR country trying to do the same. Most Muslims are peaceful. When 9/11 happened, I was renting an apartment in Jersey City and my landlords were Muslims from Pakistan. I’m proud to say that they helped me after 9/11 when we were all out of work and let me slide on 4 months rent when I could not afford to pay. They were even bringing me food to my apartment that they had made for their own dinner to make sure that I had enough to eat.
Isn’t one of the main Christian principles supposed to be kindness and compassion? Or judge not lest ye be judged?

@cessna152: You do realize that the Nazi’s and the Communists were enemies, right? Please acquaint yourself with history. Wait, that would trample on your right to be stupid.
@TORCH9: Yes, it is his birth name. He was born Barack Hussein Obama II, named after his father. He is a member of the United Church of Christ. He did not attend a “Muslim church ” for 20 years. As for the “Muslim school in Kenya” (which was actually in Indonesia, get your facts straight), he attended a Muslim school in a Muslim-majority country, not a big deal. My parents wanted to send me to Catholic school, and they weren’t Catholic.
@cavyR: No, it is not obvious. What is obvious is that you’re a simpleton.
@Iswingright: “Anyone who still believes Obama is a Christian, simply lacks knowledge of Christianity and/or are unaware of all his actions and comments” (Yeah, too bad he isn’t a good Christian like that guy in Norway who shot up a summer camp.) “As for him being Muslim, the evidence is compelling.” (What evidence?)
@Michael61: he attended a Muslim school, but not a madrasah. While a madrasah is a “Muslim school”, not every Muslim school is necessarily a madrasah.
And after I typed all of that, I realized that Locked has made many of the same points.

Obama was born to a muslim father who abandoned him months after his birth then his mother married an other muslim and moved to Indonesia. Indonesia required by their laws for a student to enroll in school that they be a citizen of the nation and a muslim, this means that Barak was raised as a muslim until he returned to Hawaii to live with his grand parents. By law Obama‘s mother forfeited her and her son’s citizenship by doing so he was no longer considered an American citizen so he would have been required by law to repatriate and become an american citizen again. This would void natural birth rights even today.
Report Post »Further, why did he take so long to publish a birth certificate? I looked at it and though I am not a computer genius it was clearly doctored. Second, he professed in his book Dreams of My Father that he sought out marxist radicals and let’s not forget his mother was a radical as well and if I understand law as it was when he was born she was not an adult yet she was still considered a minor which would have created its own set of problems for her and her family regardless of faith or citizenship. Also why would a muslim not lie to us infidels to gain power and we all know politicians lie! As for your comments about republican in the south you are clearly a northern aggressor and occupier of the southern states who have profited for generations while oppressing us and mocking our way of life.

Just keep in mind that what you now call the “base” of the republican party was once the base of the democrat party.
I’ve noticed those on the left often times do not possess what it takes to argue effectively, so they demean and degrade people that don’t share their beliefs. It’s a clean and secure environment for them to exist in; and God knows how much the left embraces “security”.
It’s so obvious that if you truly were comfortable with your Marxist hero being a Christian, that the labels wouldn’t even affect you after a while.
Personally, I haven’t figured out what Obama is; other than confused. However, that tends to happen to kids that never knew their father. He’s certainly not a Christian. Nor, is he a Muslim. In my my book, he’s closer to an atheist because of his repulsion of individuality and his near propensity for collectivism, a la Marxism.

Its black children attend some of the wretchedest public schools in the nation. Many of its white children attend church schools that are not much better. Unless you want a populace that rejects basic science and thinks the founding fathers literally descended from heaven bearing the Baby Jesus swaddled in the original draft of the Constitution.

You can thank the loony left and the Department of Education for Mississippi’s apparent ills.
You people are so delusional that you don‘t even see how you’ve literally ruined people’s lives with your endless “tinkering”, but going to bed at nite so satisfied believing you’ve actually done something good.
How pathetic and sad.

So, you think that Obama is indeed a Christian? Really now…
Would you care to explain this article from the Blaze?
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/barton-calls-obama-americas-most-biblically-hostile-u-s-president/
Here are a few excerpts from this article:
1. Acts of hostility toward people of Biblical faith:
*April 2009 – When speaking at Georgetown University, Obama orders that a monogram symbolizing Jesus’ name be covered when he is making his speech.
*May 2009 – Obama declines to host services for the National Prayer Day (a day established by federal law) at the White House.
*October 19, 2010 – Obama begins deliberately omitting the phrase about “the Creator” when quoting the Declaration of Independence – an omission he has made on no less than seven occasions.
*November 2011 – Unlike previous presidents, Obama studiously avoids any religious references in his Thanksgiving speech.
Need more proof? There is another list in this article that describes, “Acts of hostility from the Obama-led military toward people of Biblical faith”.
Feel free to read the article (again, if you already did) and let me know what you think. I am interested to hear what you have to say.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 4:42pmTHGIC: your laundry list shows that Obama is quite properly determined to keep Christianity from enjoying a privileged official position in the country’s public life, not that he is (or is not) a believing or practicing Christian personally.

The matter is that Obama is a radical, extremist who claims Christianity. (Key word; “Claims). He has allied himself with radicals across the board who are enemies of the United States and of the very Republic and our freedoms.
What matters now is his impeachment or voting him out of office; preferably before he makes his move for absolute power.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 3:44pmSTEELHEAD,
Is that the only thing that Liberals (like yourself) do these days? Name-calling? And then on top of your name-calling, you throw out a stereotype about the people who live in Mississippi as “the majority of blazers are as stupid as the GOP folks in Mississippi” – making the assumption that the people of Mississippi are in fact stupid? How does this reflect your understanding and intelligence in this whole argument? It voids whatever you say – not because you are a Liberal, but because you resort to something so childish as name-calling.
If you do not like what you are reading on the Blaze, then maybe you should stop reading it. Is that a hard concept, or are you looking for trouble? Glutton for punishment?
Just food for thought.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 1:39pmHey Simpleton, the fact is Mississippi is last, in education is because it’s nearly 50% black, last in unemployment because 50% of it’s population is black, not because this year for the first time since the civil war republicans carried the state. You look at any state, any county, any city, and their rankings in education, unemployment and crime always follow the percentage of blacks living in that state, that county, that city. We can stick our heads in the sand and pretend it’s something else, but all we will be doing is pretending. This old, it’s discrimination, it’s education, it’s economic, doesn’t fly anymore, for the last 50 years, blacks have been given the best schools, the most money, first in line to collage, first in line for jobs, first in line for home financing, and by every measure it hasn’t gained them anything at all. I can’t count on my hands and feet the number of times, I’ve been told, you are more qualified, have more experience, and surely deserve this more, but we had to give it to so and so because they are black. You take the blacks out of the counts and Mississippi would rank near the top in almost all categories. We have certainly produced more musicians, more authors, more scientists, more actors, even more Miss Americas, per capita than any other state in the nation.

“The guy in the white house right now is a democrat and mississippi had been a mostly democrat controlled state for a long time, how is that working out.”
Er… they’re a red state, bud. 12% more voted Republican than Democrat in 2008. Their current governor and lt. governor are Republican (as were the previous ones as well). Both their senators are Republican. Their House reps are 3 Republicans, one Democrat. Since the 1990s, Mississippi’s been a red state through and through; they’ve broke conclusively (>10% of the votes) GOP in the last 4 presidential elections.
So, if you want to go back more than two decades you might have a point. The state has a lot of other facts determining their problems, but them being red for the last two decades is fact.
Report Post »sWampy
Posted on March 12, 2012 at 2:45pmRed only in federal and state wide elections. The house and senate have both been controlled by democrats until January. 90% of the mayors, da’s, supervisors, superintendents, school boards are still held by democrats, but even that is changing. As long as we can continue to grow the middle class, and shrink the number of poor, as expected, more and more will wake up and throw off the shackles of socialism, and start voting conservative.

So, just to check, the majority of the state (the vast majority) is Republican, votes Republican, and elected Republicans at the state level; but locally they only vote in Democrats?
I’m not finding anything to support that. Actually, I’m finding pretty much the opposite: some towns may have Democrats, but most have Republican elected officials. (http://www.politics1.com/ms.htm).
It could also be that whites in the states (about 2/3 of the population) voted Republican 9/10 times, while blacks almost unanimously voted Democrat… but only 16% of blacks in MS vote. Seems like at most levels, even with the largest percentage of blacks in the country, MS elections swing solidly GOP.
