Poll: More Than Half of All Egyptians Want End to Peace Treaty With Israel

CAIRO (AP) — More than half of all Egyptians would like to see the 1979 peace treaty with Israel annulled, according to results of a poll conducted by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center released Monday.

The poll highlights the deep unpopularity of the three-decade-old treaty, which is central to U.S. policy in the region and was scrupulously adhered to by former President Hosni Mubarak, who was ousted Feb. 11.

The poll also revealed that most Egyptians are optimistic about where the country is headed following the 18-day popular uprising, and they look forward to greater democracy in their country.

The fall of Egypt’s autocratic leader and the rise of a more democratic system, however, could threaten relations with neighbor Israel.

According to the poll results, only 36 percent of Egyptians are in favor of maintaining the treaty, compared with 54 percent who would like to see it scrapped.

Despite the decades of peace and limited trade between the two countries, most Egyptians view the Israelis poorly, largely because of perceptions that they mistreat the Palestinians.

Opinions varied according to income, with 60 percent of lower income Egyptians supporting the treaty’s cancellation while only 45 percent of the wealthier classes thinking it should be done away with.

Only 40 percent of Egyptians with a college education thought the treaty should be scrapped, as well.

The poll, based on interviews with 1,000 Egyptians around the country, was conducted between March 24 and April 7 as part of the Spring 2011 Pew Global Attitudes survey that was conducted in 22 countries.

The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

      @@Coyote2 – your perspective is poorly thought out. Examine the level of freedom and security of individuals living in all the countries in the Middle East. If you examine honestly, you’ll find that Israel ranks highest by far (even moslems are not second-class citizens there) and that other (moslem) nations nearby are abhorrent for their rampant injustice and lack of respect for basic human rights.

    How is this news? That religion called islam is a religion of violence. It always has been. After most religions have matured and become peaceful, islam still wallows in the blood bath of hate toward any and all that refuse to convert.

    I am an atheist and even I don‘t understand how anyone puts one once of trust in people who profess peace yet don’t police their own violent hate-filled fascist thugs. Take notice, ever single time an abortion clinic was bomed or some murdering abortion doctor was killed, christians over the world spoke out. Christians as a majority do not believe in using violence to further their religious views and they police their own by condemning violence perpetrated by fellow christians. The muslims? Well you barely hear a whisper of discontent from any of them when their own kills, rapes, tortures… as a matter of fact…. they have entire nations of their own who fully side with the violent aspects of their religion. You don’t see in this day and age christian nations who will act in these ways. Well, to be honest, christians are so peaceful that they welcome all and so there really are no longer any christian-only nations. Not unless you wish to call the vatican a nation.
    This is no surprise, it isn’t a shocki9ng situation, it is just the typical environment found in muslim communities.

    Most Egyptians view the Israelis poorly, largely because they had their asses handed to them by the Israelis, twice! If Israel needs to do it again, it can and it will. Mubarak knew that – ergo 31 years of peace. It’s that simple.

    What a great democracy is being developed in egypt. Only like a month old and talking about ending peace. The only reason you would end a peace treaty was if you thought war was emminent. Lets hope that egypt is not that foolish. God has delivered his people from them once and he can do it just as easily again.

Of course it knew that the Muslim Brotherhood nor the majority of citizens in Egypt wanted peace with Egypt. Supporting the leave of Mubarak was the biggest mistake we made and will heaven forbid lead to a great war in the middle east that could spread across the globe.

Obama hates America, which is why he allowed pro-American Iranian protestors to get slaughtered and why he backed anti-American/Israel protestors in Egypt and why he is forcing our troops to support Al Qaeda in Libya. The guy called peaceful pro-Constitution protestors, who gathered to pray in DC, “tea baggers” and he cheered on violent anti-Constitution thugs in WI while they trashed the WI capitol building. What does Obama have to do for Americans to stop thinking he’s clueless?       I’m sick of Christians thinking that they are the chosen religion. thinking that the USA is their country, not every American citizen’s country.
      Sick of them burning the Quran and thinking that it won’t is off other religions.

      How about we just have a godless world, then it will be a better place

      The children in muslim countries learn from their first days in school that Jews are subhuman. They learn that Jews are pigs. They learn that all of their problems , and I mean ALL, are because of the Jews and the evil Americans who back the Jews.

      This is a deliberate brainwashing of the innocent that has allowed these Muslim Dictators to remain in power. It has all been done under the guise of religion.

      Sadly..,we have an Administration that enables that lie.
