As worldwide anxiety grows in regards to a possible military showdown between Israel and Iran, The Hill conducted a poll late last week asking American voters if they would condone a U.S. attack on Iran as a means to prevent the nation from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Nearly half of those surveyed agree that military force should be used. The Hill reports:
“Forty-nine percent said military force should be used, while 31 percent said it should not and 20 percent were not sure.
Sixty-two percent of likely voters said they were somewhat or very concerned about Iran making a terrorist strike on the United States, while 37 percent said they were not very concerned or not at all concerned about it.”
Bridging the gap between the growing foreign policy concern regarding Iran and ongoing issues of out-of-control federal debt which will be discussed as the budget process kicks off this week, The Hill next asked how voters would feel about scaling back financial commitments to the military:
Nearly half — 49 percent — of likely voters also said they opposed cutting military spending to balance the federal budget, while 40 percent said it should be reduced.
But 52 percent said the U.S. military’s presence in Europe and Korea should either be reduced (42 percent) or eliminated (10 percent), while 36 percent said those forces should be retained and 5 percent said they should be increased.
“Let there be no doubt: America is determined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and I will take no options off the table to achieve that goal.
But a peaceful resolution of this issue is still possible, and far better, and if Iran changes course and meets its obligations, it can rejoin the community of nations.”
The topic of a possibly nuclear weapon equipped Iran has been discussed frequently by Republican presidential candidates on the campaign trail.
Front-runner Mitt Romney has predicted that “If we reelect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon.”
Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has adamantly called attention to the Iranian nuclear threat, saying in a “Meet the Press” interview last month that if elected president he would bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities if the nation did not comply with international arms inspectors.
Texas Rep. Ron Paul has advocated for a less interventionist approach to dealing with Iran’s nuclear activity, which has been criticized by his rivals including Newt Gingrich who said during a interview on CNN in December “I think Ron Paul’s views are totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American.”
The Hill’s poll findings were based on a nationwide survey of 1,000 likely voters conducted Feb. 2 by Pulse Opinion Research, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I believe you are absolutely right. This is not a new war but just another front of the one that started on 911. The difference is, however, we have been whittled down by years of fighting with one hand tied behind our backs and one hand tied to the American wallet. We have spent the American gold while China and Russia were saving their money. Now we are divided and broke and yet here we go again. We have cancelled weapons system after weapons system and now we are cutting back on the number of troops that man our military. I pray every night that God helps us stand, but I feel that we are being destroyed from within. All we can do is hold our breath and wait and see.

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 5:42pmThe American people were supportive about the war in Afghanistan and Iraq and then they weren’t. If we go to war again, a war tax should be put into place to pay for that cost before we spend one penny. I realize that sometimes an event comes before the bombs are dropped, but right now this issue should be discussed to find out if the people are still willing.
The boomers are beginning to retire and will be for the next 10 years. The cost of all these wars, and future wars lies with the X and Y generation. It is their call now how we proceed. Finally at last, they get to carry the burden.

Posted on February 7, 2012 at 8:08amI had somebody try this argument on me the other day and for a moment I was left with nothing to say. That is very hard within itself. Yes, we have had wars in the past and yes we had to levy a war tax to run that war, but we have discovered that if you give the Liberals a new tax when the war is over they will simply find a new use for that tax and it will never go away. Then I was told that I should let them take away from SS and Medicaid. Well maybe not, if Congress and the President would stop stealing from those funds that they never pay back then they would be safe. A better plan would be one they did not chose, if we SAVE or LIBERATE an oil rich country then they should reimburse us for our expenses after the war is over. I heard a line in a movie once about those men that stand on that wall making sure we can sleep at night. Well I was one of those scary men that stood on that wall and I don’t have all the answers, but I do know tha if they don’t exist then the enemies that both sides hate so much will be inside the wire and then there will be no wall to defend!

I would be happy to pay a war tax as long as the war was swift, decisive and IRAN was met with an overwhelming commitment to make their country US-ISTAN afterwards. We could then turn it into a capatilist state of the US to recoup the monies spent by the tax payer.
Additionally I would defund the following programs federally and let them seek their funding from the private sector from those that care about their effort:
https://www.cfda.gov/?_so_list_aata345e59a09d0aa1d5eef16228ddd7b4c=250
Getting this list of gov programs back under control (zero based budget) would help focus this country’s resources on efforts that the majority of us want/need. It would put us back on the right track.

“Since the agreements of 1971 and 1973, OPEC oil is exclusively quoted in US dollars. This created a permanent demand for dollars on the international exchange markets. As of 2005, OPEC continues to trade in US Dollars, but some OPEC members (such as Iran and Venezuela) have been pushing for a switch to the euro.
Since the beginning of 2003, Iran has required euro in payment of exports toward Asia and Europe, though prices are still expressed in US dollars. Iran is planning to open an International Oil Bourse (IOB, exchange), on the free trade zone on the island of Kish, for the express purpose of trading oil priced in other currencies, including euros.”

They will use it on Israel and I am not sure we can stop them, however our President has already told the world that he will not use nuclear weapons no matter what and with that removed from the table the Iranians have felt emboldened. The people of the middle east have been killing each other for over three thousand years and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. The President needs a major war before the election if he stands a chance at reelection. He tried Libya and it fell before we were dragged in. He is sending troops into Africa and it is not blowing up fast enough. We have just sent our third Aircraft Carrier Battle Group into the Gulf and still the Iranians haven’t fired at a single ship. The fuse is lit, however, and when the first missile strikes one of our ships we will attack and the war will be on.

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 3:20pmThe problem isn’t what percentage of the public supports military action NOW. The problem is what percentage would support it 2, 3 or 4 years from now, and what their opinion would be when the Iranians resort to terrorist attacks in revenge. Bush went into Iraq with 70% popular support and 3 years later had 70% against him. The problem was that the fickle American public expects these attacks to be over in a few months while the enemy is willing to continue it for years.
Imagine a terrorist attack 2 or 3 years from now. It can be as simple Iran sneaking in a dozen 2 man sniper teams into major metropolitan areas. Remember the East coast uncle-nephew sniper team just after 9/11? Remember how much true terror it caused? Then we’ll have all kinds of nay-sayers crying out about how wrong we were to attack. Any decision to attack someone must be made with this kind of backdrop.
The average American’s attention span is very short. A few polls on what the American public wants is only good for the next election if that election is close enough.

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 4:15pmIt’s a “The Hill” poll, Baddoggy. Keep that in mind. I think polls are, more often than not, a way to steer the herd. Anyone know who owns this paper?

Report Post »3000 people is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount we will kill if we attack Iran. We have already exceeded the terrorist’s death toll a hundred times over. How much blood is enough?

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 4:50pmAll of our ******** global intervention started with the Spanish-American war in 1898, and the Banana Wars, etc. It was a war the new progressive media pushed us into fighting, by publishing downright lies and half-truths to incite public support. Ever since, we’ve been dragged or tricked into wars by our leaders that, if we had kept our history of minding our business according to the “Don’t Tread on Me” rattlesnake attitude, we would never have needed to deal with in the first place. Don’t let yellow journalism and the progressive agenda ruin this country. These wars are fought to expand the power of those who have power already.
