Pool Reverses Decision to Ban Breast Cancer Survivor from Swimming Topless — So Why Is She Still Upset?

Jodie Jaecks had a double mastectomy that damaged nerves and makes it painful to swim with a top. She was recently granted special permission to swim topless at a Seattle pool. (Photo: Kelly O/The Stranger)
SEATTLE (The Blaze/AP) — A Seattle breast cancer survivor who underwent a double mastectomy found it painful to wear a top when she swam at a city pool this summer. Jodi Jaecks asked if she could swim topless — she now only has scars where her breasts used to be — but the pool banned her from doing so. Outrage over the decision quickly sparked and the city’s parks chief has since apologized and made a special exception for Jaecks to swim comfortably without a top.
(Related: Facebook deems photos of woman’s mastectomy scar pornographic and removes them)
But the 47-year-old says she‘s still not happy and won’t be swimming quite yet. Why?
“Initially when I heard about the reversal, I was elated. Then it came that it wasn’t a policy change, it was just an exception for me. Then I was quite deflated. It seemed like it was a reaction that it was just meant to appease me,” the 47-year-old said Thursday.
Jaecks wants to make sure her privilege is also extended to other breast cancer survivors who want to swim comfortably.
Watch this ABC News report covering Jaecks story:
Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Christopher Williams announced Wednesday that he was giving Jaecks an exception to the department’s clothing policy.
“Our original concern stems from our responsibility to accommodate the needs of all our patrons. In this case, I see nothing that might alarm the public,” Williams said in a statement. He was reacting to an article about Jaecks that was published in The Stranger weekly newspaper, which also ran a picture of her topless.
Parks spokeswoman Dewey Potter said Thursday that Williams has decided to create a committee made up of cancer survivors, parks staff, King County health representatives and others to come up with a new policy.
Until a new policy is written, Williams will review on a case-by-case basis requests from people who have had surgery and want to swim.
After enduring two surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy and the surgical removal of both her breasts in March 2011, Jaecks wanted to turn to swimming to regain her strength. But swimsuit tops proved too uncomfortable, and nerves on her chest remained tender, Jaecks said.
So she asked the manager at her city pool if she could swim topless this past March. Eventually, she heard from the head of the aquatics department, who told her she couldn’t.
“And that’s when they said it was a policy that they required gender-appropriate clothing … regardless if I had nipples or whatever,” Jaecks said.
Potter said pool staff was following city policy. But she said it was “unfortunate” the issue didn‘t get to Williams’ attention until now.
Jaecks hasn’t swum topless yet. She told the Seattle Times that she doesn’t plan to take a dip until until she meets with William’s next week to discuss the dress code policy:
“I never would have fathomed that I would see such a huge reception to this issue,” said Jaecks, who is still fighting for every woman with a double mastectomy — not just herself — to swim topless in Seattle’s public pools. “But I’m excited about it because what started as a personal thing has become a bigger, political issue about awareness.”
[...]
“I would like to think we could have a rational conversation about it,” Jaecks said. “I can deal with the comments: I came out [as a lesbian] when I was 17. I’ve lived my life against the grain since I was young.”
Jaecks said cancer patients shouldn’t be made to feel self-conscious by asking for special permission.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 1:02pmreally? post-mastectomy camis that ARE NOT MADE FOR SWIMMING. when you take a soft cotton garment and make it wet, it becomes heavy and clings to the skin. it’s no longer soft and kind. and, heavier garments are not conducive to swimming laps (athletically). as for prosthesis- why should she have to wear them? first of all, they sit right against the skin and are NOT comfortable. second, if she’s trying to swim laps, that would not only make it uneccessarily more difficult for her, she would struggle to keep them in place. if she had that flat chest, but two nipples, we would secretly question her gender, but probably assume she was a man and this wouldn’t even be an issue! gosh people, get over your own issues and stop hating on this lady!

In the bible a woman yells out to Jesus, Luke 11:27 While Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.”
Did Jesus zap her on the spot for suggesting the He, God, came out of a ****** and suckled at a womans breast? NO Luke 11:28 But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
Many of you are objectifying this poor woman and it shows where your filthy minds are at LUSTING AND COVETING simply because you heard she was a woman. By the looks of the picture she could pass for a young boy. So many of you are guilty of rigidity just as you complain about the federal govt. being out of control. Pull the log out of your eye. Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:08pmMil-dot, you’ve hit the nail on the head. As long as a woman‘s breast and groin area as well as a man’s groin area are considered taboo in this society and something to be covered up when in public, what she is doing is wrong. And quite frankly, I don‘t want to go to the pool and see anyone else’s junk. I hate even going into the locker room because of all the old freaks who have no decency and who will walk around with their towel on their shoulder after showering instead of just wrapping it around. While I feel sorry for her and am thrilled she has survived, there is no reason whether she has breasts or not, that she should not follow the same dress code. Posted on June 23, 2012 at 4:54pmWho said I hated her? One side of my chest looks exactly like her’s. I was making the comment about comfortable clothes. Being a DOUBLE mastectomy patient, if it doesn’t make her uncomfortable, let her go for it. But it’s TRADITIONAL that women cover themselves. I don’t run around showing everyone my scar. And if swimsuits aren’t made for flat people, why do my size 34D’s get squashed so flat? They even make self stick prosthetics. BUT, that said, I didn’t say she HAD to wear prosthetics. I said they were available. I know all about nerve damage from mastectomies. I can’t feel my armpit anymore, and it’s a different shape. So I have to shave my armpit while looking in a mirror because I wouldn’t know if I cut myself. I don’t wear my prosthetic after my shower, in the evening, when I put my PJ’s on. If someone comes to visit me, they get a lopsided me. And before someone mentions reconstructive surgery, I haven’t seen any that I would call “normal.” I only wish they had taken both of mine, that way I wouldn’t need a different prosthetic every time I gained or lost 10 pounds.

It seems there should be a way to accommodate everyone’s sensibilities without making a federal case out of it. If people that don’t want to see this are in the majority, why not ask her to swim during a specified time? The fact that people can’t figure these things out without warring over it is sad. The “in your face aspect” of this may be manufactured in the reporting, but consideration for all should prevail and if her appearance upsets a great number of people, should they not be ignored.

Posted on June 23, 2012 at 5:01pmFirst, I didn’t watch the video or read the whole article. BUT, doctors try to talk women into “breast conserving” procedures, which are lumpectomies. With a diagnosis of cancer, I wanted the whole thing taken to make sure they got it all. If I didn’t have military insurance, I would have asked for the other to be removed preventatively, to make sure it didn’t spread to the other side. I had to force the issue to remove the whole breast. They still got a safe margin of a fraction of a centimenter. And trust me, lumpectomies look worse than just a scar across the chest. It‘s the fact that she wasn’t satisfied with the reversal of the decision that sticks with me. She wants ALL women to have to option of swimming topless.

Dropping a deuce is a natural function as well… we all do it and have those “parts” but I wouldn‘t do it in the middle of a restaurant just because I have the urge and it’s natural and we all do it.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 10:18amSo you mean we should walk around naked because covering yourself up is sexualized oneself? We will always sexualize woman! That is why we, women need to cover ourselves well. Being modesty expels some coveting eyes. This is not about sexualizing woman but to fight for normality.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 11:18amI have zero compassion for bullies with no common sense. Boobies are, and can have a sexual function, just ask my wife. You must be a real bore in bed. By your definition, you must only have sex for procreation.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:43amThis is total BS. There is a hidden agenda here and it has nothing to do with being a cancer survivor. This has everything to do with her being a lesbian and not wanting to have to conform to gender based standards. Make no mistake about it! This is the camels nose under the tent. The LGBT community will use this to then make exceptions to individuals going through gender identity issues/surguries. Just waite and see people… this is Seattle after all!

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:35amSorry she had treatment, but what a freaking liberal pervert. What’s wrong with wearing a T-shirt that is loose? And, what is freakin’ wrong with a pool owner / government not enforcing morals and good taste. Geez! The liberal people is this country are so disgusting there are no words for their behavior.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 10:01amReally? A t-shirt. Have you ever tried to swim in a t-shirt? It isn’t fun.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 11:10amI have swam in t-shirts many times. I had no problems. In fact, if you go to a public pool you will find many women with t-shirts swimming trying some how to cover their fat.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:33amShe got what she wanted so why turn it into a political issue? I say just be happy and go on. Or, is this an agenda issue because of her sexual preference? Just looks that way to me.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 10:06amThat was what I thought. As soon as she got what she wanted she became “deflated” because there wasn’t a policy change. What the… Its obvious it was more than just her own desire to swim without a top.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:30amMove along folks there’s nothing to see here. I can swim topless because I have nothing to look at. Unfortunately neither does she. Allowing her to swim topless might be a good way to get the message out to other women regarding preventative breast exams. On a related note, I’m considering getting rid of the lemonade stand and offering free breast exams. Just doing my part!

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:27amok…I know folks aren’t going to like this, but I don‘t want anyone to see my cancer scars and I don’t want to see anyone elses’ cancer scars. I don’t hide it, but why flaunt it? There is a mental and social disconnect for other folks sensibilities here…in other words, some people just don‘t care about other’s feelings. I know, I know…modesty and caring about what other’s think is WAY out of date…just wear a soft shirt that doesn’t irritate the nerves. I guess we just can’t keep it simple any more.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:26amWELL……..when you are the first to do something in today’s society: You get a SPECIAL exception. Then societies representatives get together and figure out what to do. That is how local taxpayer run swimming pools are run.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:46amYou have to wonder how soon will it be that some “trans gender” male who wants to be a female swims topless with his/her fake or hormone induced “breast”? You know that fight is coming to a public pool near you soon.

Posted on June 22, 2012 at 9:23amthey may be cancer survivors, but why does that mean they should swim topless……. does that mean guys who are prostate survivors can swim bottomless? And I am not making fun of her. I wouldn’t want to see a woman swimming topless, cancer survivor or not. Everyone wants special rights and is a victim
