Poor Hygiene Reaches Critical Mass: Occupy Atlanta Base Tests Positive for Tuberculosis

By now it is well known that health and hygiene issues for the Occupy movement and their respective encampments abound. But TB? Yes. The home base for Occupy Atlanta has tested positive for tuberculosis and an outbreak could be on the rise.
CBS reports:
The Fulton County Health Department confirmed Wednesday that residents at the homeless shelter where protesters have been occupying have contracted the drug-resistant disease. WGCL reports that a health department spokeswoman said there is a possibility that both Occupy Atlanta protesters and the homeless people in the shelter may still be at risk since tuberculosis is contracted through air contact.
“Over the last three months were have been two persons who have resided in this facility who have been diagnosed with confirmed or suspected infectious tuberculosis (TB),” said Fulton County Services Director Matthew McKenna in a written statement to CBS Atlanta. “One of these persons was confirmed to have a strain of TB that is resistant to a single, standard medication used to treat this condition. All person(s) identified as positive have begun treatment and are being monitored to ensure that medication is taken as directed.”
CBS adds that news of the tuberculosis threat could force Atlanta Occupiers to move camp again, which is perhaps not the best way of containing the disease, given how easily it spreads.
Meanwhile, Occupy Atlanta protester Tim Franzen is denying that TB rmight force the group to move its encampment.
“They [the health department] have no data on an outbreak.” Franzen told Redding News Review’s radio show.
“They have two cases that have been confirmed, but they have both come out of the Fulton County Jail, which is where people get TB.”
According to Redding News, Franzen said that he and the other occupiers have no problem spending the night at their home base atop the homeless shelter.
Will something as serious as a TB outbreak give the Occupiers pause to reconsider their detrimental personal hygiene habits? If the recent trend of public defecation and urination combined with close living quarters is any indication, sadly it might not.

There is no “single, standard medication” for the less virulent strains of active TB, let alone for drug-resistant or extremely drug-resistant strains. They can’t be left alone. All of these punks need to be tested for TB — and quarantined if they act stupidly and decide to move their Cr@p on America movement to another location.

You would almost think some of us libertarians believe in genocide to “cull the masses” as the Fabien Society believes, as the UN was created to do, as many of our scientists have pushed us to believe is best for the world (despite the lack of evidence) though in more subtle ways like reduced birth rates or concepts like intelligent people have fewer children (which has some aspect of merit, thus is so widely and easily received).
Honestly, have any of you considered the repercussions once some of these people go back home, TB doesn’t kill so quickly anymore, we have far cleaner water and food. We eat less spoiled food as well, so our bodies tend to be in better shape for dealing with disease on a whole. This allows people to live longer under such horrible diseases as TB. Consider the wanderlust type of personalities amongst these groups, how many of them might go from one Occupy to another, how many might go back to their normal lives for a bit, either out of homesickness, or because food sources ran out, their items were stolen, tent stolen, etc.
Consider how bacteria shape and adapt overtime. Consider that the plague we called the Black Death was a brand new version of Plague, a new virulent strain that killed quickly, likely brought out by the unsanitary conditions of Europe at the time. Consider the conditions of these camps. That’s a breeding ground for who knows what, this is something to worry over for all of us…

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 6:26pmThis should also be a warning to other mayors around the country that are contemplating dispersing their OWS protesters (i.e. Portland on Sunday morning), that perhaps ALL of those folks need to be tested so as not to cause a public health hazard by sending these folks back into the general population. Dispersing these folks only to find next week that what they’ve done is spread a drug-resistant disease, especially with this incident as a warning would seem to be ill-advised at a minimum, and perhaps criminal because there was a warning.
