Pop Singer Fumbles Super Bowl National Anthem

“I have been performing the [national] anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true,” Christina Aguilera gushed after it was announced she would perform before the year’s biggest sporting event.

But the pop singer’s performance Sunday evening left much to the imagination… namely the many words she rearranged and left out:

h/t Business Insider

About 50 seconds into her performance, Aguilera was about to sing the song’s fourth line, “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming”, when she accidentally mixed the verse with the song’s second line: “What so proudly we watched, at the twilight’s last streaming.”

In the end, it probably wasn’t a good way for the Steelers to start off the game, with Aguilera herself having grown up in a town just outside of Pittsburgh.

Actually, Christina has an amazing voice –and is quite versatile.
This time however, she was beyond disappointing.

Although the mind can go ‘blank’ when performing (no matter how ‘professional’ one is),
      singing the National Anthem of one‘s Country is not about one’s style;

      >It is not one’s concert.

This young woman has an amazing vocal range and superb vocal clarity and control. I have watched her sing our Anthem many times, and I always come away amazed. Unfortunately, she did not give her usual good performance today. I don’t mind some minor interpretation of the melody, but she was a little too free. It’s a shame. As of late, I think she has pushed the boundaries of good taste, and lost some of her previous appeal to some of her audience.

She let her quest for over-Mariah-Carey’d “style” (about as kind as I can say it) overtake the performance to the point of making her forget the words.

This song is meant to show the greatness of our country. Performing it in jazz or pop style reduces it to some sort of sexy, club music. I was appalled that what it supposed to represent, a remembrance of a time when our country was almost lost to us, could be reduced to frivolousness.

It was a real, honest-to-God disaster. She was plastered and couldn’t even remember the words. Ended it with “dah-dah-dahs” instead of words. The audience sang it in her place.

What I want to know is why these overpaid athletes don’t put their hand over their heart when they hear this song. Is America too good for them? Fewer than half of the athletes — including coaches — could be seen to show the song the respect that it deserves.

Forget Aguilera’s rendition — what did we expect? The athletes, though…that’s another matter. They are paid a hefty sum to represent their cities in a sport seen around the world.

      SHOW SOME RESPECT, you idiots!

I RESENT any celebrity singing the Star Spangled Banner because I always sense it is for their OWN glory and NOT for those who have sacrificed both great and small for this great country.

When you try to sing like you have a small animal trying to free itself from your throat — then it becomes about you and not the somber-ness of what those words mean. IMO

But even if she had pulled her version off perfectly…..it was at best disrespectful. And I do not care what your further thoughts on the matter are. Now, Black Eyed Peas, I absolutely hate them. However they did a (relatively) flawless show in comparison to C.A. and I would not call anything they did disrespectful. I do not give her a pass for being a “good person”. Nor should you.

When you say “God Bless” to others it makes me think you’re some kind of believer. When you accuse the Right of hate in the heart, it makes me wonder why the message of whatever faith you profess has gone so far over your head. Isn’t it more than a little blasphemous, in any mono-theistic religion, to claim to know the heart of another? That‘s God’s job. As is judgment.

Why do people feel they have to put their own spin on the national anthem. In my humble opinion (IMHO), the national anthem should be sung WITHOUT people “putting their own spin on it”!!! And, it helps to KNOW ALL OF THE VERSES!!! That was truly the most DISGUSTING rendition since Roseanne Barr, Arnold or whatever her last name is this week. IMHO, they should have like a choir or something similar to sing the national anthem, at least they wouldn’t BUTCHER it like Ms. Aguilera did!

Even if she had not made any mistakes with the words of the song, that would be one of the worst performances of the National Anthem I have ever heard. The rythm changes, the note changes, the vocal gymnastics; that is our National Anthem, woman. You are supposed to sing it with reverence and respect, not like you are doing a cover of Louie, Louie, as sung by Whitney Houston.

It was Rosanne Barr bad, but for different reasons.

These performers, who rearrange the words, leave them out or ruin our national anthem when they add note, tones or anything other than the way it was written, should not have the honor of singing our sacred anthem. Either sing it with dignity the way it was suppose to be sung and heard or don’t participate. Every time I hear someone’s “interpretation” our national anthem I cringe.

Someone needs to remind these divas that this is America anthem not hers and she should just sing it in it’s original composition. This disturbing trend needs to end there’s plenty of high notes without her making every word one.

I didn’t especially like her rendition or the missing verse, but she has some pipes and that is the style of her singing prowess. I have heard more over the top performances at especially super bowls than traditional ones. I prefer traditional with the Star Spangled Banner. It is hard enough to sing as it is.

She’s a talent no doubt….and I‘m not even saying she’s dim witted….. She just doesn’t know the National Anthem by heart like most people over 40 do.

She’s from another generation….a generation that was not as well schooled in national pride and honor…..we’ll see a lot more of this stuff in the coming years.

on a side note….I thought she used to be a pretty girl but she now looks like a cartoon character.

      @SLIMKENDALL

Obama doesn’t create jobs. It’s businesses that create jobs. The Government can lower the taxes on those who have the ability to create jobs (people who own businesses) therefore allowing them more room to create jobs. The only jobs that the Government can “create” are temporary ones like Census Worker.

Sorry @ Dabbo, but this proves that she has absolutely no talent what so ever. She is a self absorbed hack. She is dim witted. There are 8 lines to the first verse of our National Anthem.
I’m 36 and I know it by heart. Wy wife is 32 and so does she. Don’t apologize for Christina. Put the accountability right where it belongs, on her shoulders. She had plenty of time to learn the words, and if she didn’t, it just goes to re-inforce the level of her arrogance/ignrance. Have you noticed that there hasn’t been an apology from her yet?

      She’s a no class hack.

Umm, anyone who considers themselves a professional will study the song, get the lyrics right, and sing it flawlessly. She doesn’t need to be from any certain generation. She just needs to know how to read and memorize a performance before going on national television. She demonstrated incompetence, or was just so wasted she didn’t know where she was.

A five year old can memorize this song. They only need memorize the first verse. In fact, I have seen many kids on YouTube sing this song flawlessly. So much for the generation gap.

It’s not a sign of a lack of patriotism or a poor education. It could be a sign that she took the resposability lightly or she got overly nervous. I’m not a huge fan of the way she styled the song… a little too much showing off. Her focus shifted from delivering words to delivering impressive vocalism. I suspect, if she’d not been trying so hard to impress with the vocal gymnastics, she wouldn’t have gotten mixed up.

Was it just me, or did anyone else KNOW that the Black Eyed Peas would make a reference to Obama? I told my lady, they’re gonna say something about Obama, he has to get into the Super Bowl somehow. She asked me why I thought that. I said simply, because the guy singing is black, he cant let this stage go without praising the worthless one. She actually rolled her eyes at me. Then, when it happened, she wouldnt even look at me. Sorry I was right, but it wasnt me, it was them!! They are so GD predictable. Am I a racist for knowing this would happen? Most likely.

i knew he would because he recorded music for the Obama campaign. Not because he is black…he was just another person who got on the bandwagon.

Its sad that so many young adults don’t know American history. The story behind the writing of the Star Spangled Banner is yet another proof of American exceptionalism and divine providence. Christina needs to learn about the War of 1812 and the miracles that happened throughout this period. The biggest enemy towards American patriotism is the Federal Department of Education. If you want to blame someone for Christina’s complete lack of respect for the song…..look towards the Fed’s corrupt department of education. Time for it to go. Imagine all the money that could be saved if the responsibility of educating our youth is given back to the states.

Can they not find “SOMEONE” that knows how to sing “OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM” before the entire world. She could not only sing our National Anthem, she just could not sing….“PERIOD”!!!

I like her voice, and some of her songs, and I’m willing to forgive the lyrical flub, but what I didn’t like was the vocal acrobatics of her performance. It would have been much better if she’d just sang the song traditionally, like the lady who sang “Oh Beautiful for Spacious Skies”. Now that was some singin’!

      Dabbo,
You are correct. Those of us who were educated in real American schools would never make that mistake because we learned the Star Spangled Banner. Some of us, as that former marine at the Tea Party rally, whose name I do not recall, even learned all the verses – in our church hymnals as well as in our schools.

This nitwit didn’t sing The National Anthem, she sang “The Battle Hymn of the Skanks”. Who in the world has so little class to show up at the superbowl looking like a cheep ****** attending the funeral for her favorite John. When she was “belting those notes” I wanted to beat her with a belt. She had her mouth so wide open I was praying that a bird would fly by and crap in her mouth. I guess that hate speech though…Right.

And by the way….. You people who say, “well you get up in front of millions of people and sing the national anthem”……This broad don’t seem to have any problem getting in front of millions of people mostly naked and humping what ever she decides to put on stage to hump. I guess this skank just don’t know how to stand there and be respectable.

Chistine has a beautiful voice, but I think she was trying to hard to fill the entire statium with her voice and I think that might have caused her to botck the second verse. It was a disgraceful way to start the ballgame.
