Popcorn Protest: Who Instigated Anti-Israel Demonstration Inside Texas Church?

Popcorn.

That‘s the best way to describe the image Pastor John Hagee’s deputy director of security, Chris Flores, painted for me as he retold what happened at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, TX on Sunday. He confirmed what Hagee says in an open letter from earlier today: 11 protesters were escorted out of the sanctuary as one after another popped up to utter anti-Israel slogans during the 11 am service.

“They should be thanking us”

“We handcuffed them until we ran out of handcuffs,” Flores said as he detailed how he and others on his team reacted to the situation. According to him, they followed the church’s normal procedure for such disruptions: they escorted the instigators out of the sanctuary, secured them in a separate area, took their pictures and identification, called the local San Antonio police, and then had the police issue criminal trespass warnings, meaning that if the protesters ever come back they will be arrested.

“Since it is private property and Pastor Hagee owns the property, we are agents of pastor Hagee and we can execute what he wishes. He wanted the people removed,“ Flores said as he explained why ”free speech” doesn’t apply to meetings on private property.

There are competing claims by the groups about how Flores and his team handled the protesters. In the video, the protesters claim security members “assaulted” them. But Flores denied the claim.

“None of those people were manhandled by anyone who was security or a staff member of the church,” he said. What he does not deny is that some of the normally-peaceful church members were starting to become annoyed and began showing signs of reacting physically. At that point, he said, it wasn’t just about removing the disturbance, but also ensuring the safety of those responsible for the disruptions.

“We helped these people,” Flores said. “There were people who were trying to … pull them. They should be thanking us.”

And the “us” includes many guys who have taken an oath to defend such instigators. Most of the security team are law enforcement officials, Flores said, many of them state troopers. In fact, Flores is a part-time police officer in the nearby city of Bandera, TX.

While nine of the protesters went on their way after the incident, Flores said two others were arrested by the San Antonio police for outstanding warrants.

Do the protesters have an affiliation?

One of the more obvious questions surrounding the outburst is, do the protesters have an affiliation? The answer is yes — and no.

Flores and the church team did some digging after identifying the protesters and found that two of them were employees of a local Hispanic advocacy group. Both Jessica O. Guerrero and Monica Velasquez are listed as staff members at Esperanza Peace and Justice Center in San Antonio:

“In reviewing the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center facebook page it appears that at least five more of the eleven protesters participated in past protests publicized by Esperanza,” Hagee writes in his letter to Beck.

Additionally, Flores noted that the video of the protest was posted on Esperanza’s Facebook page, only to be removed later.

A quick look at Esperanza’s donations page shows it claims to receive state and federal funding:

That would make its official involvement in such a protest more than suspect.

I called Esperanza to see if Sunday’s protest was officially sanctioned by the organization. Monica Velasquez answered the phone and confirmed that she was one of the protesters. However, she denied it was an Esperanza event.

“No, Esperanza wasn’t involved,” she said. What about two of the protesters working at Esperanza? “That’s true, but [the protest] was in no way part of the Esperanza center. We weren’t acting on behalf of Esperanza.”

I then asked how she was treated by the security personnel. Instead of responding to the question, she said that since Esperanza wasn’t involved, and I reached her at work, we could no longer discuss the issue. That effectively ended our conversation.

Reasonable people can debate Israel

David Brog is executive director of Christians United for Israel, the organization Hagee founded and currently serves as chairman of, and he was there on Sunday. He has no problem with people voicing concerns over Israel, and he even concedes that Israel isn’t a perfect country. No country is. And there’s room for disagreement.

“Listen, Israeli citizens themselves debate this stuff,” he explained to The Blaze. But rather than enter into a civil conversation regarding those disagreement points, he said, this group of protesters devolved into attacks.

“Reasonable people can debate some of the ways Israel has sought to defend itself against terrorism or the way they have decided to go about the peace process,” he said, even citing Israel’s response to Palestinian protesters on the Israeli border this past Sunday as an example. “But when you go beyond that debate and try to say that its way of defending itself is genocide, that’s when you go beyond reasonable debate and into slander.”

Unfortunately for the protesters, their actions might have had the opposite effect.

“This has really encouraged and energized us to share the truth about Israel and the facts about Israel,” Brog said. “They’re relying on the worst lies. You can raise valid critiqes aobut Israel, but when you start accusing them of aprtheid and genocide, those are the worst lies.”

    For just one minute, put aside your religious beliefs, Hitler, the holocaust, and the anti-Semite label and ask yourselves this: (1) Are there any Jews in positions of power whose actions are helping to destroy America? (2) Does Jewish influence and control over Hollywood, the media, the Federal Reserve, banking, etc… exceed the fact that they represent only 2% of the population in America? (3) If these questions made you mad, or are unreasonable to ask; then why?

      Look at it from this position if you wish to truly understand. The Jewish people are God’s People. Satan hates God, therefore he especially hates what God loves. Satan seeks to destroy the Jews by turning them toward evil. This is also furthering Satan’s goal of turning EVERYONE against God. What better way than to especially empower/overcome God‘s chosen people so they do Satan’s bidding? Then worldwide hatred for Jews will have justification that he seeds. Do you see you are being played as a pawn by Satan. Give yourself over to God’s will, ask Jesus to save you and show you His way and this will all become quite clear. YES Jewish people DO EVIL. But they are STILL GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE. We know this because He said so. And God is also very, VERY clear how he views anyone who curses them. And also how he rewards those who bless them.

    i cant tell if you are really a communist or someone making fun of them. but either way what you said i lauged at. of course communists dont have feelings. because their communist governments which are as big of oppressors as nazis in germany where, took all their liberty and freedom away making them over time numb. but on another note i think its safe to say that anyone who is anti israel is a radical and are nut jobs. anyone who can agree with destroying or killing another country is just like agreeing with nazis killing jews. may not be labled genocide but it is pretty close to it.

    They are all very lucky because this time they were just up against security and the congregation at Cornerstone and so they just loved to scream that much louder but that is all going to change on judgment day – oh yes every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that HE is Lord.     I wonder what would happen if some christian groups invaded the meetings of this group. How the MSM would have a field day, in accusing the christians of “INVADING THE PEACEFUL MEETINGS OF A HARMLESS GROUP” anyone want to bet??     The list of names appears to be mostly Hispanic.

    While “all are hoping / expecting / waiting” (todos somos esperanza),
    – why not go to Mexico and try fixing the problems there?

    If there is true concern about murder, etc,
    go to the towns & cities that have been taken over by the coyote, drug cartel, the corrupt police and politicians and make your protest.

    Mexico is a country of much beauty and rich history that needs a lot of help.

    A friend of mine has done a similar search of social website and IDs two of the protesters are the antisemites who have been posting here recently, blaming Jews for all of the world’s problems. No need give you their user names. You know who they are.

    I don’t agree with the tactics of this group, nor do I agree with them characterizing Israel as the “bad guy.” Israel is not the bad guy. I stand behind the Israelis as our friends and allies. I believe they are a stabilizing force in the Middle East and their fearsome presence is part of that.

    But the reality is that if there is ever to be peace in that region, Israel and the Palestinians need to both compromise to reach a truce satisfactory to both. Sadat, with a lot of financial help from the US did it, and that can happen again.

    It’s false that President Obama is “against Israel.” BS actually. You can’t be a peacemaker (as in “blessed are the peacemakers”) and start with the posture that whatever Israel does is 100% correct. You can’t mediate between two peoples with that starting point, they are right your are wrong (which is never the case anyway). President Obama is only continuing Bush’s policy, even after 9-11, of reaching out to Arabs.

How many times have ISRAEL given up some of their land for peace?? The only thing that these muslim will be satisfied with an ISRAELI COMPROMISE is for Israel tell the muslims and give them a definate date that Israel will leave the country of ISRAEL.       Gingerbread, Israel has only taken land. They took in during war, and that’s part of war I agree. But now the are claiming it permanently by settling there. They conquered the land, expanded their territory and saying they won’t give an inch back, even in the name of peace. Every American President has opposed Israel taking the conquered lands as their own.

      I’m support Israel. But I also know that the Palestinians see that land that was theirs under the UN agreement has been taken away. And much of their holy land has either been taken away. I’m not agreeing with the Palestinians either, because members of that group (not all them, not most of them) have committed atrocious acts against the Israels and all of mankind.

      I think where you in I differ is that I think we should work toward a peaceful solution through compromise, and you think the Israelis should just beat the crap out of the Palestinians until they submit.

      I don’t imagine you understand much about compromise in your household, your job, or in your religion.

      What you‘re saying isn’t unreasonable in and of itself. However, the reality of the situation is that the Palestineans are not reasonable. Were Israel to cave and give back all lands ever conquered the Palestineans would still be advocating the destruction of the state of Israel and would use that land to simply have a closer rocket firing pad. Logic and reason and compassion are not traits shared by militant Islamists. We’ve had a dose of that ourselves. Reality trumps theory. Sad but true.

      Uh. So you are saying peace is possible with millions upon millions of people who are sworn and continue to swear each and every day to eliminate you from the planet?     It’s interesting that the Esperanza Peace and Injustice er Justice Center is denying that they were involved in this Church protest. They’re liars. We know they were.

    Along with the Islamists, the radical Left is also getting superb at deceit and deception. It was revealed today that Esperanza not only gets funding from George Soros and the Tides Foundation but they also get funding from we the taxpayer through the National Endowment for the Arts. Lovely!

    When is it that the politicians in Washington are going to wake up? And when is it that the government MSM is going to wake up? They’re covering for the greatest of all oppressors. The Marxists and the Islamists and they‘ll be the first to go when they don’t tow the line and kneel on their bloodied mats of servitude and subjugation.

    The controller’s “useful idiots” are naively thinking that they’re in control of things, when really what is being done is that they are the ones being controlled and used for their controller’s evil totalitarian ends whereby death by government is always the end result. Always.

    true reasonable people can debate. but marxists are not reasonable. islam is not reasonable. its “do as we say or else” if you were to actually try and debate these people they would be slammed by anyone knowing anything about the issue. but its not about the issue its about emotion. libs(marxists) need problems to be relevant, and their solution to every problem is more govt/elitist control. any solution other than them controlling you and especially solutions of individual responsibility come into play takes away their power to control and therefor must be stopped. these fools call us tea party members “nazi”. but it never dawns on them who the nazi’s were. the nazis were not people fighting for more individual liberty and lower taxes.     I try to empithize with these disruptive individuals, but all I come up with is evil hateful, self-righteous zeal. It is beyond my abilities to understand their motivations for the tactics inside the church and then their cowering and deception after the incident. Maybe liberalism is a mental disorder.

      It will not come as a shock if the ACLU or some activist group takes up the defense of these folks who caused the disruption if it comes to a criminal or civil case in the courts. That would most likely allow them a platform for ‘the cause’ in whatever form they wish it to proceed.

      Anyone wonder what the administration will make of this situation?

      As posted in another thread, what if a follower of Jesus Christ were to go to a muslim organization meeting? Let alone go to meca. If we were not killed before getting out of there the media would have a field day and bho would take advantage of that time for more back room deals, executive orders to do more destruction and probably start another war for good measure.

      just wanted to comment about the last part of this story where the writer stated that the protesters “are relying on the worse lies” I don’t think those idiots are relying on any kind of rotten propaganda. They hate, pure and simple. Just have past president administrations and presidents call the minutemen vigilaties and the whole mexican, latino groups run with that. our govt has bent over to kiss their ass for so long that they are all now so proud. Why they‘re in the streets with smiles on their faces when protesting for illegal immigration because they know they themselves can’t believe how lax the govt. is. those protesters are not smart enough to know the real issues. If america had any balls to say no to what ills our country, we wouldn’t see idiots like this in the news. they would for the most part be more disiplined. chaos is all about the democrat party.
