Pope Benedict XVI with Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia in Madrid
MADRID (The Blaze/AP) — Pope Benedict XVI denounced the profit-at-all-cost mentality that he says is behind Europe’s current economic crisis as he arrived in hard-hit Spain on Thursday, and said morals and ethics must play a greater role in formulating economic policy in the future.
Benedict made the comments as he traveled to Madrid for the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day, a weeklong Catholic festival that is taking place against a backdrop of the European debt crisis and social unrest among the young that exploded recently in the riots in Britain.
Benedict said the crisis and sense of desperation among young people proved that ethics have been increasingly left out of formulating economic policy at local and international levels.
“The economy doesn’t function with market self-regulation but needs an ethical reason to work for mankind,” he told reporters traveling aboard the papal plane. “Man must be at the center of the economy, and the economy cannot be measured only by maximization of profit but rather according to the common good.”
He said the current crisis shows that a moral dimension isn’t “exterior” to economic problems but “interior and fundamental.”
Benedict explored the theme more fully in his 2009 encyclical “Charity in Truth,” in which he called for a new world financial order guided by ethics, dignity and the search for the common good.
On Wednesday night, about 5,000 protesters opposed to the pope’s visit clashed with riot police in downtown Madrid. Police said eight demonstrators were arrested and 11 people were injured in the disturbances Wednesday night in the city’s Puerta del Sol plaza. A protest against the pope last year in London drew some 10,000 people, the largest such anti-pope demonstration in recent times. Al-Jazeera has more on the protests:
“People were going really crazy but, at the same time, God wants all of us to be here and I know that he‘ll like protect us all while we’re here,” said Holly Springfield, a 17-year-old American who witnessed the protest and said she was a bit shaken by it.
But Benedict arrived in Madrid on Thursday to a boisterous welcome from young people with their faces painted the colors of the Spanish flag chanting: “These are the pope’s young people!” A cordon of youngsters decked out in faux Swiss Guard uniforms greeted Benedict on the tarmac at Madrid’s Barajas airport, along with Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.
Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and conservative opposition leader Mariano Rajoy, the man forecast to take power in November elections, also were present.
Clouds and a breeze kept Madrid’s notoriously hot August temperatures down to a relatively comfortable 25 Celsius (77 Fahrenheit), though the mercury inched up as the sun broke through.
In a speech delivered on the tarmac in Spanish, Benedict referred to the precariousness many young people see in their future. Unemployment in Spain is nearly 21 percent and is the highest in the eurozone.
“Many young people look worriedly to the future, as they search for work, either because they have lost their job or because the one they have is precarious or uncertain,” Benedict said. He urged young people to keep fast in their faith.
“With God beside them, they will posses light to walk by and reasons to hope, unrestrained before their highest ideals, which will motivate their generous commitment to build a society where human dignity and true brotherhood are respected,” he said.
King Juan Carlos also referred to the sense of hopelessness many young people feel, saying today’s youth are “frustrated by the lack of personal and work possibilities, and rebel against the serious problems facing the world today.”
As Benedict was being driven from Madrid‘s airport to the Vatican Embassy through one of the capital’s ritziest neighborhoods, streets and bridges were filled with youths waving flags, throwing white and yellow balloons – the Vatican’s colors – and cheering. The popemobile was surrounded by security cars and motorcycles with blue lights flashing.
Later Thursday he is to be officially greeted by World Youth Day participants in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles.
This is Benedict’s third trip to Spain as pope, cementing its reputation as ground zero in his campaign to reinvigorate the faith in European countries where Catholicism has fallen by the wayside. Laws passed under Zapatero allowing gay marriage, fast-track divorce and easier abortions have deeply angered the Vatican, which sees the once staunchly Roman Catholic country as a battleground for the future of the faithful in Europe.
Many Spaniards have balked at the cost of the visit at a time of economic difficulty. Many have cited the fact that pilgrims are getting deeply discounted subway and bus tickets with their accreditation packages, while such prices for everyone else went up 50 percent this month to $1.50.
Vatican Radio responded to the critics Thursday, noting that the euro50 million ($72 million) tab for staging World Youth Day is being paid for by the participants themselves, some private donors and the church. Critics say the organizers‘ estimate for the price tag doesn’t include security costs and is a fraction of the total price tag for Spaniards.
On Tuesday, police arrested a chemistry student working as a volunteer for the pope‘s visit on suspicion he was planning a gas attack on protesters opposed to the pontiff’s visit, officials said. The 24-year-old Mexican student, Jose Perez Bautista from Puebla state, was ordered released on Thursday. He wasn’t formally charged but remains under investigation with his passport seized.
Organizers expect a million or more young people from 193 countries to attend the festival. The main events are a prayer vigil with the 84-year-old Pope and outdoor sleepover for pilgrims Saturday night at a sprawling air base, and Mass there the next morning.
Except for a trip Friday to a historic monastery in El Escorial, 50 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Madrid, the pope will spend the whole visit in Madrid, meeting with young people, hearing confession from some of them, riding through the city in his popemobile and greeting young nuns, seminarians and university professors, among other activities.
In Spain the church faces a congregation for whom being Catholic is more a birthmark than a way of life. A poll released in July says that while 72 percent of Spaniards identify themselves as Catholic, 60 percent say they “almost never” go to Mass and only 13 percent every Sunday.

Benedict XVI
“The State which would provide everything, absorbing everything into itself, would ultimately become a mere bureaucracy incapable of guaranteeing the very thing which the suffering person − every person − needs: namely, loving personal concern. We do not need a State which regulates and controls everything, but a State which, in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity, generously acknowledges and supports initiatives arising from the different social forces and combines spontaneity with closeness to those in need. … In the end, the claim that just social structures would make works of charity superfluous masks a materialist conception of man: the mistaken notion that man can live ‘by bread alone’ (Mt 4:4; cf. Dt 8:3) − a conviction that demeans man and ultimately disregards all that is specifically human.” (Encyclical Deus Caritas Est, December 25, 2005, n. 28)

With that kind of blaspheme I don’t care what any of them say until they come clean, stop leading people to hell, and truly repent of their ways. The catholic church is responsible for leading hundreds of millions of its followers to hell. That is not to mention how many thousands they murdered in the crusades.
Please, please seek the face of God for yourselves. Get on your knees and beg God for forgiveness and ask Him to come into your heart. Read His Word for yourself. Everyone is born with a specific purpose to fulfill for Him. So if all you know about the Bible is what others have told then you have not received what he wants you to do. Church doctrine is just like what is going in our government. They keep adding more and more laws and things get worse and worse.

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 1:16amPeter, the first head of the church, and thus, the first “Pope”, was a disciple of Christ and could cast out demons and heal the sick. Common sense tells me that it was his job to train a successor, and that the tradition and knowledge passed from Christ to Peter should have been carried forward. Methinks that some “apprentice Pope” cheated on his final exam, and the “secret” of Christianity was lost. That would mean that we’ve all been just “going through the motions” since that happened. I’ve heard of warrior Popes from the early Middle Ages that went into battle with a mace instead of a sword, so they wouldn’t be guilty of the sin of shedding blood. That doesn’t sound very Christ-like to me, so it’s apparently been a long time lost, that “secret”!

Gideon is speaking truth. The division comes from your choice to follow the Pope instead of Jesus Christ, not from Gideon telling you truth.
If your denying the Pope believes to be Christ on Earth your denying Catholic Doctrine. Either your ignorant of your own “faith” or flat out lying. Fact, which can not be negotiable, the Popes think they are Christ.
A two page list can be compiled and posted if you would like of the contradictions between the Pope‘s teachings and Jesus’s teachings.
A two page list can also be compiled detailing the anti-Christ from the Bible which the Pope fulfills perfectly even up to this day.
A two page list can also be compiled showing Peter was no Pope and Jesus never declared for there to be one.
We do not speak these truths out of hate but out of love. If you know Jesus you know He is all you need to bow to, talk to and worship to.

Here we go again.
Peter never set foot in Rome in his life, he was sent to spread the Gospel to the Jews. Paul was sent to the gentiles. Peter was married, Jesus healed his mother-in-law. The catholic priests are not allowed to marry so they turn to their accepted practice of unnatural, immoral, illegal, and anti-Biblical tradition of burning in their lusts and brutalizing children sexually.
Yes, Jesus cast out demons and and told us to do the same, have you yet?
Jesus said in Mark 16:15-18
-And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
-He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
-And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
-They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
If you are involved with a church that does not have a healing ministry, does not cast out demons or teach others about it, denies and prohibits speaking in tongues than you are not obeying Christ and not a follower of Him. How can you be a witness for God when you do not follow or believe His Word.

Social justice is something I don’t believe in it and is not necessary. Catholics are taught from birth to take care of their families, be charitable, and follow the Commandments. Correct, Churches can not speak out against the State due to becoming state “agencies” thru the IRS. In essence, the Church is part of the State, restrained/controlled by the State.
It is almost as if we built an image of the old Papal Rome, In which the Pope dictates legislation to State and the State silences Churches from speaking out and forces them to follow. Just like the good old days of the dark ages………Just as the Bible says would happen……
Please look and do your research behind the political aspect of the Vatican. Many many many legislation comes from the Catholic Church in Rome. The Club of Rome who divided the World into ten kingdoms pushes Social Justice, Global Warming, open borders and and global governance. It also had a hand in agenda 21. Look yourself….

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 8:50pmRight on! Jesus wore a cloak and sandals, and rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The Catholic Church keeps one of the richest treasure houses on the planet. Jesus called his followers “fishers of men.“ The Church calls its cardinals ”Princes of the Church.” They wear fine silks and satins, and ride in limousines. The pope lives in a palatial apartment in the Vatican, or in the Castel Gandolfo, travels in an armored Popemobile (his skin being more precious than yours or mine) and flies in a jumbo jet. He and the cardinals are surrounded by precious art and gold and bejeweled chalices, etc. Just selling off the gold and Old Masters paintings would feed the poor of the world for a long time.
And how dare does this ex-Hitler Youth lecture on morals, when hundreds of his priests – and even bishops – have for centuries sexually abused children? By the way, being convicted of child sexual abuse does not automatically, or even often, lead to a priest being defrocked and forced out of the priesthood. You see, the crime is a breach of CIVIL law, not church law. Now if a priest were to marry, out he goes.

Perhaps a little background would help you in this area. I was raised in a home that was loosely church driven and then sent to an offshoot of this cult, a lutheran school. Years later after following what I was taught there things continued to be hell on earth. That was until I finally got on my knees and truly went to God.
When my eyes were opened I began to seek Him with all that I had. By doing this I also had the need to try to wake up those that have been deceived by this misguided organization.
I hope that you may see your way through to research what I have stated in my posts and see for yourself that the catholic church is as far from God as the east is from the west.
Report Post »Just walk into a catholic church and see how hard pressed you are to see Jesus through all of the idols. When you do see Jesus He is usually depicted in three different ways.
- He is either dead on the cross.
-Dead at the foot of the cross with Mary there.
- or a useless infant in Mary’s arms, while she has a hallo on her head.
In all of these renderings Jesus is useless to them without Mary first.
And here is a shocker for you. Jesus‘ Mother’s name was Marion or Mariam, depending on the language. So the perpetual virgin mary that the catholics worship is a familiar spirit and that is another reason why this deserves its due title as a satanic cult.

Because of the fallen nature of Adam, we are ALL susceptible to sin. No religion is without a few misguided folks. We cannot judge the whole on the few. However, “…and I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Mathew 16:18). So even after 2000 plus years, the Catholic Church still survives. Have there been misguided priests, bishops and popes – certainly, the HOLY SPIRIT calls on new people to right the ship. How many times did the Israelites fall during their 40 year journey from Egypt? Yet through God’s love and understanding of their faults, eventually brought them to the promised land. If anyone took time to not take this passage out of context and actually do a word study into it in the original language they would see that this is one of the most misunderstood passages in the Bible.
Yes we live in a fallen world, but why make it worse on yourself?
What happens when a catholic sins in between confessions?
Why does the Bible say that no man can forgive sins?
So why do catholics disregard God in this manner and try to replace Him with man?
God’s Holy Spirit is what the clinical and scientific fields calls your conscience.
If your conscience tells you it is OK to confess your sins to a man whose office is in great question then we need to examine ourselves.
We religious spirits come upon a leader of a church their ego grows.
Do not get me wrong. I am not just giving grief to the catholic church. Any church that puts their existence above their original vision or above God has become institutionalized and is unprofitable for the Kingdom of heaven and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
When I say research what I have stated I mean to do this objectively and not reading church doctrine to shore up your views.
The picture of the real Church is in the Book of Acts.

yea, those numbers are sad. And they fall right in line with the left too. Worship, pray to, and honor mary above God.
The math that adds up is the fact that most people that will have any part in the Kingdom of Heaven are those that have left these organizations and turned to God. ” Many are called, few are chosen.”
Working in the clinical area the worst cases that I have dealt with are those that have been devastated by the catholic church. Recovering catholics are some of the most gracious people on the planet. Their love for God is so great and their thankfulness that their eyes are opened. Their new state is almost beyond what human language can describe.
Report Post »Being brought up in a lutheran church and sent to their school I know most of the traditions that are involved by these groups. I call them pew aerobics. “Sit, stand, kneel, …chant, -sit, stand kneel, chant,….blah,blah,blah.”
We are to heal the sick and cast out demons. Building hospitals all over the world is not what Jesus had in mind. I have been miraculously healed by God of many things and I am so grateful to Him for this. Demons do not need exercise or to be medicated they need to be eradicated. Using pieces of dead people in a ritual to get rid of demons only brings more of them.
I realize that indoctrination is difficult to overcome. It usually takes something rash to open the eyes. I speak pointed at times to try to get someone to open their eyes and take a good look at the

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 7:49pmRead “The Vatican Exposed,” by Paul Williams and you will never view the Catholic Church as anything more than a vast mafia-type operation hiding behind the mantle of God/religion. As a former Catholic I’ve come to the conclusion that organized religion is nothing more than a carefully orchestrated venue to control our minds and purses.
One only needs to go outside, look at all nature presents to us, and pray and honor God there – sans digging into our purses or threatened with going to hell because we did not report to church on a specific day.

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 8:01pmSorry, pope. You aint God and you aint correct on this issue. Jesus and the Bible call us to INDIVIDUALLY respond to those in need. Thats called CHARITY. What you are calling for is redistribution of wealth and that is what got Europe into this mess (along with USA) in the first place. No one asked for your financial advice anyhow.

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 8:08pmOh come on Kathleen… I know a ton of people that don‘t give a dime at Mass and a few that don’t think twice about skipping the Sunday obligation to sleep in or go fishing– is this welcomed, no. But they aren’t tortured or stopped at the door and told to step in line or suffer in Hell. I also was raised Catholic, rebelled, returned, and chose to study theology and Church teaching to better understand WHY the Church says what it says, why the rules are what they are. I am glad I did and I hope you find what you are looking for. As for me and my house, we will praise the Lord– Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity; in the Eucharist.

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 7:48pmThe Jesuits believe that society made people poor and charity is diddly squat. They believe the poor have a right to take it from the rich. This is what social justice is. It is pretty darn scary.

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 8:14pmNot all Jesuits; that is the far left of the order. Don’t forget, while it is the Universal Church there are differing opinions within it. Even within the Jesuits there are varying views on Social Justice. Certainly, there is that view but there are others which are more in line with the tradition (which is from the Jewish tradition) which is that a society or community has an obligation to help (not merely provide for) the needs of the less fortunate. The idea was to lift the poor out of poverty and improve the good of the community by helping that person be a full member of the society contributing his or her gifts back to the whole.

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 9:20pmI think all of this governmental “social justice” stuff is wrong. Jesus was concerned with our individual spiritual lif, not our monetary status. I think he wanted individuals to help anyone in need. He was not telling governments what to do! He was not requiring governments to “take/redistribute” belongings from one person and give them to someone else. While He got very testy with the sellers in the temple, I think it was more because they were defiling a place of worship with a market place atmosphere than that He was against selling/ capitalism! I think that the “social justice” crowd has misinterpreted Jesus’ message. They mean well, but they are actually causing injustice. Free will has always been an important pillar in Christianity. The governmental force of the “social justice” philosophy negates that very important tenet.

Report Post »I agree with RedTexan, I attended Jesuit HS & University, & never recall even the term social justice never mind the liberal view of what that means. It was all about hardwork, learning, & helping the less fortunate, as in being charitable & compassionate.
And although I made some harsh (but I think justified) comments on this topic earlier, I am a strong believer & supporter of a Catholic E-school education. It provides a solid education at a good value, & a strong moral foundation which is priceless. Of course the parents & family must lead the way on both as well.
