Pope Denounces Abuses of Christians

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI urged Christians to remain strong in the face of intolerance and violence in a New Year’s appeal Saturday that came hours after a bomb blast outside an Egyptian church killed 21 people as worshippers left Mass.
The pope condemned a widening campaign against Christians in the Middle East in his homily at St. Peter’s Basilica, echoing comments last month in which he called a lack of religious freedom a threat to world security.
“In the face of the threatening tensions of the moment, especially in the face of discrimination, of abuse of power and religious intolerance that today particularly strikes Christians, I again direct a pressing invitation not to yield to discouragement and resignation,” he said.
Benedict has repeatedly denounced a campaign against Christians in Iraq blamed on al-Qaida militants, including an October attack on a Baghdad Catholic church that claimed 68 lives, two of them priests.
The Vatican is very worried that a steady exodus of minority Christians from Iraq will permanently reduce their numbers and discourage the wider community of Christians in the Middle East.
Benedict cited what he called two negative extremes at work in the world: secularism, “pushing religion to the margins to confine it to the private sphere,“ and ”fundamentalism, which instead would like to impose (religion) with force on all.”
The Vatican celebrates New Year’s as World Peace Day, and Benedict urged world leaders to make a “concrete and constant commitment” to help bring peace.
On Saturday, a bomb exploded in front of a Coptic Christian church in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, killing at least 21 people in an attack that raised suspicions of an al-Qaida role.
Benedict recalled his speech last month in which “I stressed that religious freedom is the essential element of a state of law — you cannot deny it without, at the same time, undermining all rights and fundamental freedoms.”
After leaving the basilica, the pope removed his gold-colored robes, donned an ermine-trimmed crimson cape to guard against the chill, and greeted from his apartment window pilgrims and tourists in a packed St. Peter’s Square.
The new year, he said, is an opportunity to reflect “on the great challenges that our epoch poses to humanity,” calling the threats to religious freedom urgent.
“Wherever religious freedom is effectively recognized, the dignity of the human person is respected to its root, and through a sincere search for truth and good, moral consciences are shored up and institutions and civil coexistence are reinforced,” the pope said. “That’s why religious freedom is the privileged way to build peace.”
Benedict also announced that in October he will make a pilgrimage to Assisi and invited non-Catholic Christians as well as world religious leaders to join him in the Umbrian hill town of St. Francis.
He said he wanted to mark the 25th anniversary of a similar pilgrimage made by Pope John Paul II and highlight his conviction that “the great religions of the world can constitute an important factor of unity and peace for the human family.”

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 8:31pmPope Benedict has asked Christians to remain strong in the face of violence. He condemned threatening discrimination & religious intolerance against Christians. He said the lack of religious freedom is a threat to the entire world. He is correct. We Christians of every denomination must unite & be strong. Our Leader is God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son & the Holy Spirit. If we firmly follow the leadership of God, we will we win.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 5:05pmListen, all you who boohoo the crusades, the muslims attacked north into Europe FIRST and the crusades were a result of that. And this anti Christian theme I am seeing. Yes, the Rapture is near. Jesus said that we shal;l know the time is near. ALL prophecies conderning the Rapture have already been fulfilled. You can choose to not believe it, you can choose to ignore it, but it is coming whether you want it to or not, or whether you believe it or not. God gave us free will to choose whether to believe or not. It’s not like the false religion of islam, where you convert or be killed. One world order, one world government, one world religion, one world currency are all being openly discussed by world leaders, just as the Bible says. You can choose to believe, or not. Up to you.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 3:29pmThe “New world order” is being defined by the Muslims who for decades in the last century have waged a sectarian war against all those who they oppose; from attacks on Hindus and Sikhs in India to Buddhists in Thailand to Christians in the western world.
The Pope’s response is feeble and ineffective, bound by his position he can do no more than appeal to deaf ears. On the other hand the US and NATO are waging a war against these elements but here again due to political correctness we have labeled it a war against terrorism and have handled in that manner.
The aggression of the rising tide of Islamic fundamentalism is now global and they have no problem in proclaiming their cause, be it on London or New York streets.
My personal hope lies in Western history, When the moors started their invasion from Spain into France and they were unstopped, a man named Charles Martain gathered a professional Christian army and defeated the Moors who fled France and eventually Europe. His later generation gave birth to the “Clove dynasty” that led to Charlemagne, who created the Holy Roman Empire using draconian laws to enforce Christianity. His reign is known as the “First Reich”.
The reason I say this is that during 2010 over 1200 cars were torched by marauding Muslim mobs who did their deed in the dead of night. I believe the European sense of war is waged far too often and most of them based on Sectarian issues would now resurrect to take on this new menace of Islam that is determined to make Europe an Islamic continent.
We need another Charles Martain and another Charlemagne to rid ourselves of this growing cancer both in Europe and in the USA.

The unbelieving culture today has a problem because there’s no basis for truth out there outside the word of god.
Boundry of good and evil runs through every human heart.
How do we overcome the world system? Jesus Christ is the victor. Believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God our creator. Believe what he has taught. Then you’ll believe that he will be victorious in the final analysis. If that faith isn’t present, you’ll be swept along with the world system.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 3:14pmHillbilly, I too am waiting for the media to decry the persecution of Christians and point out that it is a religion of peace and that believers are being murdered in cold blood for their beliefs. I think we will have a long wait. Christians appear to be fair game, perhaps even believed by the lamestream media to be deserving of extermination since they are not “inclusive” enough and far too judgemental. Of course the same lack of inclusiveness and being judgemental are NOT criticized in Muslims. That would be Islamophobic.

If anyone has been following the Pope and his message, you ‘ll know that on Dec 20 2010 he made and astonishing statement .
“ The very future of the world is at stake”
He also said :
Thus the words and ideas of the Synod must be a clarion call, addressed to all people with political or religious responsibility, to put a stop to Christianophobia; to rise up in defence of refugees and all who are suffering, and to revitalize the spirit of reconciliation. In the final analysis, healing can only come from deep faith in God’s reconciling love. Strengthening this faith, nourishing it and causing it to shine forth is the Church’s principal task at this hour.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 3:55pmWell, snow, I meant it as a joke, but if you want to really get into facts, I think we’d all benefit from really looking into the background of the Crusades. It‘s one of those things that tends to get ignored in history lessons because it doesn’t play into the “Christianity is the root of all evil” narrative. The Crusades were reactionary – plain and simple. Take away hundreds of years of Muslim aggression and expansion – by the sword – into Europe, and the Crusades never would have happened.

Posted on January 2, 2011 at 7:38pmSnow Leopare you need to read real history. You have been taught many misleading things about the Crusades. I am not saying there were not abuses and terible things done by the crusaders, but the original reason for the Crusades was to protect the Christians who were being martyred if they would not convert. The Crusades were also faught to regain the holy cites of Christ’s life take by Muslims by force. We do not hear about the 100K + Christians who died at the hands of the Muslim invaders. Look it up sometime in a real history book.
