Pope Slams Marxism Before Cuba Trip

Like his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI is no fan of Marxism.
Due for a trip to communist party-controlled Republic of Cuba, the Pope has not backed away from criticizing the nation’s government. Pope Benedict is currently in Mexico for a three-day visit and will arrive in Cuba Monday. During his flight to Mexico Friday, the Pope told reporters, “Today it is evident that Marxist ideology in the way it was conceived no longer corresponds to reality.”
The Guardian reports that Benedict told reporters accompanying him on the papal plane, “In this way we can no longer respond and build a society. New models must be found with patience and in a constructive way.” The Associated Press notes that when asked about reports of harassment and detention of dissidents on the island, Benedict said the church wants “to help in the spirit of dialogue to avoid trauma and to help bring about a just and fraternal society.”
Cuban authorities detained prominent dissident Bertha Soler and dozens of her Ladies in White colleagues in a crackdown last week before the Pope’s visit:
About 30 other Ladies supporters did make it to the march, which began peacefully, but state security agents moved in when the Ladies tried to extend the protest into streets they don’t normally enter. All were escorted onto a bus belonging to state security. By Sunday evening, many had been released and some driven back to their homes, though Soler was apparently still being held.
The Ladies in White formed in 2003, shortly after authorities jailed 75 intellectuals, activists and social commentators in a notorious crackdown on dissent, sentencing them to long prison terms. All have since been freed, and many have gone into exile.
Cuba has cleared its jails of most political prisoners, but human rights groups say the government of President Raul Castro has stepped up short-term detentions and other forms of harassment against the island’s tiny opposition.
During a 2007 trip to Brazil, Benedict made even stronger remarks demeaning the ideology at the root of Cuba’s government:
‘The Marxist system, where it found its way into government, not only left a sad heritage of economic and ecological destruction, but also a painful destruction of the human spirit.’
AP reports Saturday that Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez avoided any clash with the Pope’s statement, saying Cuba will listen with respect to Benedict during his visit next week even if he differs with island leaders.
“We consider the exchange of ideas to be useful. Our people have deep convictions developed over the course of our history,” Rodriguez said at a news conference. “Cuba will listen with all respect to his holiness.”
Rodriguez added that the Cuban system “is a democratic social project, genuinely chosen, which is constantly perfecting itself.”
Benedict will arrive in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba Monday. The Associated Press reports that Cuban officials said 797 journalists from 295 media outlets in 33 nations were issued visas to cover the 84-year-old pope’s visit, which is to include a meeting with Raul and possibly Fidel Castro.

That no longer exists.
But the underlying goal of workers retaining the fruits of their labor and not paying tribute to gangster capitalists is what the Church supports.
The Age of Reaganomics, giving all the money to the rich and letting them trickle it down, has caused another global crisis. It’s time to end it.

Sorry Marybeth but you are confused. Reaganomics was smaller government, and inherent to that is less taxes or allowing people who work and succeed to keep more of their OWN money. It’s not GIVING money to anyone. I suppose you would prefer government TAKING other people‘s money and giving it to people who didn’t earn it.
I’ll bet you never owned a business, created a job, or employed a single person. If you had, you might understand that it is freedom that made this country prosperous, and it is government that is destroying it. As it is you are just misled, confused, and part of the problem.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 10:45amGod only asks believers to give 10% to help the poor. Jesus never demanded the government take control of people’s lives. Look what happened with healthcare. Now the Catholic church must go against its beliefs because the government dictates what the church can do.
Social justice is evil. My son learned about it in Jesuit school. It says that society makes people poor. Charity is not enough. Therefore the poor have a RIGHT to TAKE it from the rich.
When you give the government control of your life, you get Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Chavez….ie you get evil. Freedom is GONE.
Freedom is precious. Wake up Marybeth.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 4:23pm@Mary- Our economic system seems to be acceptable to the vast majority of Americans. As such you are free to emigrate to Cuba, N. Korea, China or any other communist country of your liking. I am amazed that one such as yourself, so enamored by a system that exists elsewhere and could easily become your home, would tolerate living in a society that you find so lacking. Isn’t your happiness important enough to you to leave this nation of selfish, greedy uncompassionate self serving capitalists, for your Marxist utopia? Life is too short to spend it wishing for something that is as close as the closest airport.Think it over.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 6:56pmI am definitely middle class and definitely was happier under Reagan than I have been under any Democrat. Your liberal friends are THE worst economic crooks in the universe, they are NOT your friends. You are being used. Conservative ideal: get educated in a discipline or trade that allows you to support yourself, make a living and be FREE to decide how and where to spent the fruits of your labor. Why on earth would you or anyone in their right mind want THE GOVERNMENT to tell you what you can buy, where you can buy it, if you can buy it, and determine what and how you can sell the fruits of your labor. When you work for someone, that is a contract between you and your employer, make yourself invaluable and you will be paid more or you can chose to work elsewhere. The market ALWAYS seeks out capable people. Now, I guess, if you have decided on a life as an unskilled slothful person, then Marxism SOUNDS terrific. The reality is, sooner or later, all those that worked so hard in the capitalist system will become more like you, then there is no MONEY to pay for all the things you think you deserve because you breath.

Report Post »Great! Another Catholic Hater. You don’t know jack, Jack. And all you do is go around getting down on anybody. You show alot of bitterness and distain on a consistant basis. You ever hear about ‘Charity’. The Catholic Church Dogma says to respect all religions. Pope John Paul 2 wrote a book on the whole thing. It would do you good to read it. Quell some of that ‘Self-Rightious’ anger that beholds you.
The Catholic Church knows Freedom of Religion is the key. Yeah, Protestants were burnt, and as many Catholics were burnt. The Puritans were great, weren’t they? Good old Oliver. But they all came to the New Land, America. First to have Religious Freedom, and freedom itself as much as possible, through distance.
A good Protestant is better than a bad Catholic. I hear that in Church all the time. And it’s true. I don’t doubt your faith, Aquinas, it’s your lack of Christian Love. Hey, I‘m happy you’re Protestant. You believe Christ is God, right? Good. We agree that in Heaven seeing ‘Truth as It Is in Itself’, we will delight in It, together. I’m happy with that.
Theocrasies don’t work. If there was a Christian theocrasy in America, 30,000 denominations would be killing each other. But be it a Jew, Muslim, Buddist, Hindu, a man open to the Unknowable God, an Athiest, if they are peaceful and loving, give respect.
Love God with all you’ve got/ Love your neighbor as I Love you/ Love Brother as yourself/ Golden Rule.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 9:57amWeareamerican: trying to equate being catholic with supporting pedophelia? Give me a break.
All pedophiles, priests included, ought to be publicly castrated. But the rate of abuse in the catholic church isn’t any higher than any other large organization. In fact it is shown to be less. But the mainstream media (of whom I’m sure you are a devout follower) makes it their mission to highlight it every chance they get. Why? Because they, and you, are dancing to Satan’s fiddle.
What other organization is so consistently against homosexuality, pornography, premarital sex, or any other deviant behavior that today’s society tries to promote as acceptable? Very few left if you look around. Of course, you probably are ok with all that.
Again, should the bishops and priests involved in the crime of either committing or covering up pedophelia be punished? Of course, and in the harshest possible manner…but to equate Catholicism with supporting such disgusting crime is ridiculous, and speaks volumes about your twisted mind.
