Pope Tells Catholics in China to Have Courage

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI in his Christmas Day message is urging Catholics in China to courageously face limits on religious freedom and conscience.
Benedict is using his traditional holiday speech, delivered Saturday at noon from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, to encourage people living in the world’s troublespots to take strength from the comfort of Christmas. Tensions have flared anew between the Vatican and Beijing over China‘s defiance of the pope’s authority to name bishops.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.
BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — The largest number of pilgrims in a decade gathered in Bethlehem to celebrate Christmas, with tens of thousands flocking to the Church of the Nativity for prayers Saturday morning, while violence in Nigeria and the Philippines marred Christmas Day festivities.
Israeli military officials, who coordinate movement in and out of the West Bank, said over 100,000 pilgrims have come to the town since Christmas Eve, compared to about 50,000 last year.
They said this was the merriest Christmas in Bethlehem in years and the highest number of visitors for the holiday in a decade. They officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
In contrast, Christians were marking a somber Christmas in Baghdad in the face of repeated violence by militants intent on driving their beleaguered community from Iraq. Archbishop Matti Shaba Matouka said he hoped Iraqi Christians would not flee the country.
Hundreds gathered at a Baghdad church where Muslim extremists in October took more than 120 people hostage in a standoff that ended with 68 dead. Church walls were pockmarked with bullet holes, plastic sheeting covered gaps where glass windows used to be and small pieces of dried flesh and blood remain stuck to the ceiling.
After the siege, about 1,000 Christian families fled to the relative safety of northern Iraq, according to U.N. estimates.
“No matter how hard the storms blows, love will save us,” Matouka told the gathered faithful.
Christmas was marred by violence in the Philippines. A bomb exploded during Christmas Day Mass at a police chapel in the volatile southern Philippines, wounding a priest and five churchgoers.
The improvised explosive was hidden in the ceiling of the chapel, which is located inside a police camp in Jolo town on Jolo Island, a stronghold of al-Qaida-linked militants.
In Nigeria, at least 11 people have been killed in multiple Christmas Eve blasts in the country’s central region that was violently divided between Christians and Muslims.
Gregory Yenlong, the Plateau State information commissioner told The Associated Press on Saturday that he counted 11 dead bodies at two sites rocked by bombs in the city of Jos. Yenlong said nobody has claimed responsibility for the attacks in the city, which has long been plagued with religious violence.
In Rome, Pope Benedict XVI ushered in Christmas Eve with an evening Mass on Friday amid heightened security concerns following the package bombings at two Rome embassies and Christmas Eve security breaches at the Vatican the past two years.
Benedict processed down the central aisle of St. Peter’s Basilica at the start and end of the Mass without incident, stopping several times to kiss babies, bodyguards on either side of him.
During the same service in 2008 and 2009, a mentally disturbed woman lunged at the pope as he walked down the aisle — and last year she managed to pull him to the ground.
In Bethlehem, pilgrims and tourists posed for pictures and enjoyed the morning sunshine Saturday while others thronged the Church of the Nativity for mass. Worshippers also packed the Roman Catholic church built next to the grotto where the traditional site of Jesus’ birth is enshrined.
Pilgrims have slowly been returning to Bethlehem since violence between Palestinians and Israelis slowed down over the past five years. The town’s 2,750 hotel rooms were booked solid for Christmas week, and town officials say more hotels are under construction.
The warm weather, a sharp decline in Israeli-Palestinian violence and an economic revival in the West Bank all added to the holiday cheer this year. Only one-third of Bethlehem’s 50,000 residents are Christian today, down from about 75 percent in the 1950s. The rest are Muslims.
On his first visit to Bethlehem, Greg Reihardt, 49, from Loveland, Colorado, said it was “a really inspiring thing to be in the birthplace of Jesus at Christmas.” Father Juan Maria Solana, who had come from Jerusalem, said the beautiful day was “a good sign of serenity, a good sign of peace.”
Palestinian tourism police chief Ziad Khatib said he hasn’t seen this many Christmas visitors in 10 years and added: “We have passed the bad years.”
Signs of the violence are still present, however. Visitors entering the town must cross through a massive metal gate in the separation barrier Israel built between Jerusalem and Bethlehem during a wave of Palestinian attacks last decade.
The Israeli military said it attacked a “terror training facility” and a weapon smuggling tunnel in Gaza overnight. The coastal area’s Hamas rulers said nobody was hurt in the Israeli airstrikes.
Some 500 members of the Gaza Strip’s small Christian minority left the blockaded territory on Thursday for the festivities in Bethlehem. About 3,500 Christians live in Gaza among 1.5 million Muslims. Relations were traditionally good but there has been incidents of violence against Christians since the Islamic militant group Hamas took control three years ago.
Christians only make up for about 2 percent of the population in the Holy Land today, compared to about 15 percent in 1950. Like many other Christian communities across the Middle East, many have migrated to flee political tensions or in search of better economic opportunities.
The Roman Catholic Church’s top clergyman in the Holy Land, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, issued a conciliatory call for peace between religions during his homily in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve and urged an “intensification” of dialogue with Jews and Muslims.
“During this Christmas season, may the sound of the bells of our churches drown the noise of weapons in our wounded Middle East, calling all men to peace and the joy,” he said.

“And what does Kepha mean? It means a rock, the same as petra. (It doesn’t mean a little stone or a pebble. What Jesus said to Simon in Matthew 16:18 was this: ‘You are Kepha, and on this kepha I will build my Church.’
http://www.catholic.com/library/Peter_the_Rock.asp
Then there’s the next part, where Jesus gives AUTHORITY in Matthew 16:19
“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Yellowfin, you are of the mind-set that the Bible alone is all that is needed, but this is not correct. For example, for as many people that read the Bible, you could have that same number of interpretations, which leads to confusion and deluded teachings. How many people take and twist Scripture to suit their own desires! This responsibility was given by Jesus to the apostles, His Church. We have to consider what the Bible says as well as the TRADITIONs of the early Church.
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church with a link to an entire section about it:
95 “It is clear therefore that, in the supremely wise arrangement of God, sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church are so connected and associated that one of them cannot stand without the others. Working together, each in its own way, under the action of the one Holy Spirit, they all contribute effectively to the salvation of souls.”
http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p1s1c2a2.htm#95
Catholics are in FULL harmony with what Jesus instructed.
Does this mean Catholics are all perfect people? NO. Sadly, some high ranking Catholics are some of the biggest persecutors of the Church. Also, there are so many “Catholics in name only”… ugh. There’s a battle going on! Everywhere, there’s a battle going on.
(Pope Benedict XVI is a GREAT pope, by the way!)
Additionally, you are robbing yourself sooooo much when you haven’t allowed yourself to look into the AMAZING spiritual history and treasury of graces God has sanctioned to the care of the Church. All the Sacraments, sacramentals, and devotions … inexhaustible …. Will make you weep in a good way, bringing you closer and closer to the heart of Jesus, to His will for your life, to the TRUTH.
Don’t knock it, until you’ve thoroughly investigated it and prayed on it for yourself. God bless you.

You said; How many people take and twist Scripture to suit their own desires!
That is exactly what you just did. That is what the catholic church fathers did back in the third century. And the “protestant” churches did the same. Your rebuttal is full of holes. People want rely on their “religion” to tell them what to think because it is too much work to educate themselves. God wants us to rely on and actually read, with understanding, his Word, the Bible. Forget about your misguided religion and read the Bible for a change.

Posted on December 26, 2010 at 5:27pmEven though the cultural revolution was meant to “cleanse” China of religion and western or foreign influences the undercurrent of religion has withstood that terrible time which caused millions of Chinese lives.
There is a steady underground conversion to Christianity, including the remarkable effect of conversion to Vajrayana Buddhism, the sect that was and is part of Tibetan culture. With the attack on Tibet’s culture and religion the effect has caused many in China to embrace it.
Atheism is reminiscent of an empty space in a human heart. It believes not in the nobility of man nor its divine origin, thereby relegating man to that of any creature on earth. Time and time again man has sought the inherent higher purpose of faith over that which negates it.
In the long run Beijing will fail and the Chines will embrace that which makes them human and realize the divinity of their souls. In fact Beijing never succeeded in blowing out the light of God among the Chinese. All that Beijing did was drive it underground where it has been tendered and grown through the decades.
When the time is right the freedom of worship and the belief of God will fall like a ripe fruit and Christians will erect churches in the glare of the sun for all to see and worship according to their faith. The idea of negating God will then see its last breath.

Posted on December 27, 2010 at 11:44amSeems to me that when someone challenges the teachings of the church, the faithful claim it is some sort of persecution. If you believe something you should be able to back it up using God’s Word, the Bible. That is not attainable for catholics because their teachings are out of harmony with the Bible.
Could it be that a motive for these comments are not designed to persecute, but to teach the scriptures. We all should have the courage to examine why we believe a certain thing. Is why we believe actually a Bible teaching, or does it come from the fallen minds of men?
This is not persecution, it is a desire to help people get to the truth.

Posted on December 26, 2010 at 1:03amBlacktooth:
The Trinity has been around for a very long time, and is easily explained by the truth that God is Love. In this statement is the basis of the Trinity – Love involves 3 things – the One who loves, the One who is loved and the Love that binds them. The One who loves is God the Father; the Beloved is Jesus;the Holy Spirit is the personification of the loved shared between the Father and the Son.
In the OT, we are taught that God the Father created the world; we are also taught that God’s Word (not yet flesh in the OT) exists and proceeds from the Father; we are also taught that God’s Spirit moves as the wind. In this, the Trinity is described, but not named as such specifically. The Bible also doesn’t say that Jesus ever went to the bathroom, either, but I’m pretty sure He did, as He was human in every way except sin. The Bible also doesn’t say “Here is the Table of Contents declaring which books ought to be here” – that was a man-made decision based on guidance by the Holy Spirit, so does that make the Bible contents ‘invalid’ simply because it doesn’t spell out which books should be there? And guess what – the people who decided whch books to accept and which books to reject from the Canon of Scripture were the clergy class – so, in claiming that we shouldn’t accept directives that come from the clergy class, and given that the contents of the Bible were decided by the clergy class, by implication of your logic, we shouldn’t accept the Bible either, the very Bible you are suggesting we should trust in.
If you want to proceed strictly on the basis of what is written in the Bible, then remember that St Paul said that disciples of Christ were not to keep only what was written down, but also everything else that he and the apostles taught. Facts are stubborn things.
As for the clergy class, they have also existed for a very long time, back to Melchizedek, and they taught the Hebrews as keepers of their Judaic faith. Even Jesus went to Temple on the Sabbath, as He is Jewish. Are you implying that the clergy class of the OT and NT times misled the Hebrews or that the Hebrew clergy were evil?
As for God’s Name, it is I AM, and Catholics do not refuse to use it. If by some chance you are referring to YHWH, which has mistakenly been engineered to be called ‘Jehovah’, you would need to have an understanding of Hebrew language to decipher how to pronounce it. Commonly, in the Catholic church, it is transliterated phonetically with Hebrew vowel points added in as Yahweh.
I can handle straight talk and your right to expound it. I just happen to disagree with it is all And whenever I see people attacking the Catholic church, I will defend her.

Posted on December 25, 2010 at 10:40pmTo Blacktooth and all the other Catholic bashers here:
The Lord said that the ‘church’ would come under attack and that His followers would even face death on His account (yes, I paraphrase), and that they would be reviled on account of His name…based on the empirical evidence in the media of *which* followers are coming under attack (and based on the Catholic-bashing going on here, and conspicuous *lack* of attacks on the Protestant denomniations in general). it looks as though the Catholic church and its followers are the most reviled of Christians, even by those who claim to be non-Catholic Christians…therefore, I conclude that Jesus was prophesying about the Catholic Church, strictly based on what I observe in the media..go figure
ALL of this bickering and in-fighting amongst Chrisian groups (seen even here) is exactly what the adversary wants…he attacks us from within and divides Christians…if we want to have any hope of defeating the muslims, we have got to UNITE instead of fighting one another..we can always argue theology *afterwards*….the in-fighting is like re-arranging the deck charge on the Titanic as it is sinking

Posted on December 26, 2010 at 12:26amSir, I am not bashing catholics. There are thousands of good men and women who share your faith. I do bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to accurate knowledge. The true knowledge of God and of his Son, Jesus can only be found in God’s Word, the Bible. You should not rely on a clergy class to tell you what to believe, all men need to search out the truth in the Bible for themselves.
For instance, please read John 17th chapter (the whole chapter). It is a prayer Jesus was addressing to his Father. Now if Jesus is God, then who was he praying too? And why did he instruct his followers on how to pray at Matthew 6:9-10 ? Our Father in heavens, hallowed by thy NAME. I think you know what God’s name is, why do catholics refuse to use it? The trinity idea is the most destructive teaching because it denies accurate knowledge of God. It is a false teaching of the catholic church and the majority of the protestant churches also. If you cannot handle this kind of straight talk, then may you please try to excuse my right to expound it.

I also think that most of those people do not know what they are talking about either. Your pastor at your local church does not have the responsibilities the Pope does. The Vatican is not only a religious entity but also a diplomatic one. The Holy Father has been outspoken on human rights abuses and what political power the Vatican has is used to help mankind. While the current Pope does not have the charisma the late Pope had, he is still a man of great faith.

Just because someone makes a comment indicating a view other than a catholic view, does not make them a Huffington or MSNBC. If you are proud to be a catholic, then fine, be one. But be careful when looking down your nose at a person who actually reads the Bible and knows what it says on idol worship, the trinity doctrine, mixing in politics, a clergy class, celebrating pagan holidays, a pope, etc., etc. The catholic church is so full of errors that many people cannot abide by it.

True Christians have always been the target of the evil one. Why? Because true, genuine Christians stand in defiance of God’s enemy, Satan.
John 14:30 indicates he is the ruler of this world.
Ephesians 2:2 says he is the ruler of the air (that we live in).
2 Corinthians 4:3-4 indicates he controls mankind’s affairs (for the time being).
At present mankind who are not serving God properly fall into this category; 1 Corinthians 10:20
So, real Christians need to be very diligent in not yielding to false teachings. Read God’s Word Daily so you can be properly educated.
