Pope: We Await 2012 with Trepidation and Hope

(AP) Pope Benedict XVI marked the end of 2011 with prayers of thanks and said humanity awaits the new year with apprehension but also with hope for a better future.
“Another year approaches its end, while we await a new one, with the trepidation, desires and expectations of always,” Benedict said at the traditional New Year’s Eve vespers service, as he delivered his homily from the central altar of St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday evening.
“With the spirit filled with gratitude, we prepare to cross the threshold of 2012, remembering that the Lord watches over us and takes care of us,” Benedict said. “In him this evening we want to entrust the entire world. We put into his hands the tragedies of this world of ours and we also offer him the hopes for a better future.”
Benedict, wearing gold-colored robes, arrived for the solemn ceremony standing aboard a raised, wheeled platform that ushers guided up the basilica’s long center aisle.
The 84-year-old pontiff started using the device earlier in the year to reduce fatigue. Benedict nimbly navigated the platform’s two steps and knelt, apparently without difficulty, at the foot of the altar area as a choir of men and boys sang hymns.
Immediately after the 90-minute prayer service, the pontiff shed his liturgical vestments, donned a full-length white topcoat and rode aboard the popemobile into St. Peter’s Square, to the surprise of many tourists.
He stepped down to walk briskly to a spot before the life-sized Nativity scene, where he knelt in silent prayer. A towering Christmas tree, donated by Ukraine and twinkling with lights, sparkled in the center of the square.
Benedict then strode over to a contingent of the Swiss Guard band, which played “Silent Night” and other Christmas songs, and chatted in German with one of the guards in traditional colorful costume.
Benedict will return to the basilica Sunday morning to preside over New Year’s Day Mass, an occasion the Vatican marks as world peace day.

As for the 2012, may I, in my humble paraphrasing, predict another year of the same old crap.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 12:21pmWell no, not really. The Catholic Church has a promise from her divine Founder – actually more than one promise: “…Behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.” (Matthew 28:20) and “And I say to you: You are Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 18:16) This is known as the INDEFECTIBILITY OF THE CHURCH: Christ meant His Church to endure to the end of the world. It is to be indestructible and unchanging, – to possess indefectibility. Christ, God Himself, could scarcely have come, and with such incredible pain and labor have founded a Church which would die with the Apostles. He came to save all men. Those to live in future ages needed salvation as much as the people of Apostolic times.

Posted on January 2, 2012 at 1:57pm@MALACHI your are quoting a scripture out of its context lets look at the verses BEFORE Matt 16:18. I can justify almost anything if I only use ONE scripture in whatever context I choose.
Lets start in Matt 16:13 so we can get an idea whats going on here.
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
(THIS IS THE TOPIC “WHO AM I or WHO is JESUS)
14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist ; and others, Elijah ; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am ?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”(this is the ROCK that JESUS is the CHRIST NOT PETER it was a play on words because peter in aramaic kepha means rock)
17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
18″ I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock(JESUS is the CHRIST is greek for ANOINTED one) I will build My church ; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Peter took the gospel to the Jews. There is no evidence that Peter ever went anywhere near Rome. Before pentacost after Christ accended the Apolstled got in the flesh and elected somone to replace Judas the betrayer so they would have twelve. When Jesus had told them to wait for the comforter. So later Jesus himself picked Paul as the 12th

Posted on January 2, 2012 at 6:13pmDavidzion, your point about taking Bible verses out of context is well taken. I would say the same point applies to interpreting events ONLY from the Bible.
Peter, or Petros in Greek, is the masculine form of the word for “rock.” There is evidence the word was spoken in Aramaic by Jesus. The word kepha is the equivalent of Peter and means “large rock,” as would be used in a building’s foundation. This Aramaic word is preserved in the NT as Cephas nine times.
Simon’s name change alludes to when God changed Abram to Abraham (Gen 17:5) and Jacob as Israel (Gen 32:28) Jesus is making a point here that upon Peter he is building something, like the temples were built upon great stones (1 Kings 5:17, Ezra 3:10). Jesus is building a new church upon the foundational rock of Peter (Eph 2:20; Rev 21:14). I am not pulling this out of thin air – this is the teaching of the Catholic Church.
Peter did go to Rome and was martyred there. He stated he was writhing from Rome in code in 1 Peter 5:13. And it is corroborated by numerous early historians and Church Fathers. http://www.catholic.com/tracts/peters-roman-residency
Although Paul states that he is “an Apostle,” the Bible states that Matthias was selected as the replacement for Judas Iscariot. Acts 1:24-26
Blessings to you in 2012.

Whenever this Church has had power, she has abused it. Look into the collaboration of the Catholic Church and the Nazis. Search USTASHA …where they killed an estimated 750 thousand, trying to exterminate anyone that was not Catholic.
Learn the history of the Church of Rome, and keep watch of her actions, as the Bible states she will get her power back at THE END, and bring more persecution, than at any time in history.

It compiled the books that were divinely inspired at the Council of Hippo in 397 AD. I suggest that you read something by Scott Hahn, a former Evangelical pastor who converted to Catholicism after he studied the Fathers of the Church. He set out to refute Catholicism as a false religion once and for, and his study led him to become a Catholic. It took alot of courage and humility to admit he was wrong. As a former Catholic, you owe it to yourself to dig deeper before you write off the Church that Christ Himself founded. A good place to start is “Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism“ by Scott Hahn or ”Surprised by Truth: 11 Converts Give the Biblical and Historical Reasons for Becoming Catholic” by Patrick Madrid, another convert. These are highly educated men who seriously investigated the claims of the Catholic Church and accepted them all as true.

Far from being a dead religion, it has received more converts than any other religion, other than Islam. I am appealing to you as a brother Christian and assume that you have good will. I can see that you sincerely believe what you write about the Catholic Church and it is frustrating because you are so very wrong and misguided. The like embroidery was upon the ephod; but the quantity of gold therein was greater. Its figure was that of a stomacher for the breast. There were upon it two golden buttons like small shields, which buttoned the ephod to the garment; in these buttons were enclosed two very large and very excellent sardonyxes, having the names of the tribes of that nation engraved upon them: on the other part there hung twelve stones, three in a row one way, and four in the other; a sardius, a topaz, and an emerald; a carbuncle, a jasper, and a sapphire; an agate, an amethyst, and a ligure; an onyx, a beryl, and a chrysolite; upon every one of which was again engraved one of the aforementioned names of the tribes.”

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 5:45pmMountains, not hills. From the Greek word Horos / Oros. This is a very important distinction.
For if John is talking about hills (The greek word Bounos), Rome would be a candidate, as would Edinburgh, Constantinople, Cincinatti and San Fransisco.
However, since the word Horos- mountain- is used, there is only one candidate- Jerusalem. That’s right, Jerusalem is the city that was known in antiquity as the city on Seven mountains because it is the only city in the world built on seven mountains. In fact, Jerusalem was actually called “The city on seven mountains” in John’s time and his contemporaries would have certainly understood the allusion. For the record, they are: Mt. Goath, Mt. Gareb, Mt. Acra, Mt. Bezetha, Mt. Zion, Mt. Ophel, and Mt. Moriah.
Rome, on the other hand is built on seven hills; Palatine, Aventine, Capitoline, Quarinal, Viminal, Esquiline and Caelian. Identifying these seven hills with the Catholic Church is even more problematic for Anti-Catholics. For Vatican City sits on the opposite side of the Tiber river on it’s own hill; Vatican Hill.
Chapter 20:
2 And I John saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and he will dwell with them. And they shall be his people; and God himself with them shall be their God.

This is an unmistakable allusion to the sacking of Jerusalem ordered by Vespasian and carried out by his son Titus. The verses even tell us that this is the ‘’great city’’.
All you have to do is read Revelation 11:8;
8 And their bodies shall lie in the streets of the great city, which is called spiritually, Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord also was crucified.
Christ was crucified in Rome? In Vatican city? No… He was crucified in Jerusalem.
Sodom and Egypt were both judged and received plagues of God’s wrath. John is assuring us that Jerusalem awaits the same fate. Revelation tells us that the whore has been judged guilty of the blood of both the prophets and martyrs (11:18, 16:6, 18:20 and 18:24)
Once again, there is only one city that qualifies;
LK 13:33 Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.’
Here, the Savior, HIMSELF is telling you that the one and only candidate for the harlot is Jerusalem. Would you dare to dispute

Hope is not just “hoping for the best” but “confidence in Christ.” When the Pope says Hope, he is certainly putting forth a lot of positive vibes. We are hopeful because we know things, after all it’s said and done, will be ok and you and I will also be ok. Hope is the sure anticipation of good things. Thank you Benedict.

Think: Abraham ready to kill his son; Moses in the desert with a bunch of whiners; Paul’s many caustic letters to backsliders; and. . .um. . .Jesus on the cross, “Father, why have you forsaken me?” Not real upbeat. This idea that Christianity is supposed to be happy-clappy-sing-song and inoffensive is a modern secular invention that effectively neutralizes the Gospel by making it into a milquetoast Hallmark limerick that “just makes us smile.” When Christians fail to play this invented role in public, we’re slapped with labels like “divisive,“ ”out of step,“ ”offensive,“ ”not helpful.” Or, in this case: “not upbeat.” Fr. Posted on January 1, 2012 at 7:53amYou are sadly wrong about the pope’s position on a New World Order. If his comments are read with a correct translation, you will see that he is calling for world cooperation to correct issues, not a world government. As for the rest, the Catholic Church has made its position VERY clear on socialism/communism in DIVINI REDEMPTORI. I quote…
“The doctrine of modern Communism, which is often concealed under the most seductive trappings…strips man of his liberty, robs human personality of all its dignity, and removes all the moral restraints that check the eruptions of blind impulse…It is a system full of errors and sophisms. It is in opposition both to reason and to Divine Revelation. It subverts the social order, because it means the destruction of its foundations; because it ignores the true origin and purpose of the State; because it denies the rights, dignity and liberty of human personality.” http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Pius11/P11DIVIN.HTM

All that have died in the Grace of God, through Jesus are members of the Body of Christ. There is nothing wrong with praying to saints — including Mary – and asking them to pray for us. There is tons of evidence for this in the OT, NT and in the Apostolic Tradition of the early church.

1883 Socialization also presents dangers. Excessive intervention by the state can threaten personal freedom and initiative. The teaching of the Church has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity, according to which “a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co- ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good.”7
1884 God has not willed to reserve to himself all exercise of power. He entrusts to every creature the functions it is capable of performing, according to the capacities of its own nature. This mode of governance ought to be followed in social life. The way God acts in governing the world, which bears witness to such great regard for human freedom, should inspire the wisdom of those who govern human communities. They should behave as ministers of divine providence.

That’s not to say that Catholics are bad people or that their hearts are not in the right place, just that the faith as a whole has lost its way over the millenia.
And sorry, but I simply cannot trust a supposed “priest” who decks himself out in such lavish (and gaudy) finery as the Pope. An example of what a true follower of Christ in the Catholic church should be like would be Monsegnieur Bienvenu from Les Miserables. Posted on December 31, 2011 at 11:26pmI had my concerns when I first saw the Pope’s comments on “redistribution of wealth” in his recent message from December 16 (I think). After researching this further, and understanding the context a little better, I am less concerned. Benedict isn’t speaking of “redistribution of wealth” in the way Barack Obama would consider it — forcible taxation and redistribution through government programs. The Holy Father, consistent with his two predecessors, is referring to the development of Christian society in which the wealthy would understand their obligation to share their wealth – on their own. Subsidiarity is a very comforting (and just) concept which is central to the teaching of the Catholic Church. Concepts such as socialism and communism are vehemently opposed by the Church because those systems put the government in the place of God and take away the God-given free will of the citizenry.
There is a very robust conversation about this on the Catholic Answers blog here:
http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=626466&highlight=central+bank
This is yet another situation where the media looks for a splashy anti-Catholic headline, and then moves on before the full complexity of what is being discussed can be vetted in the public forum.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 11:46pmI was truely hoping you’d sway my decision. Unfortunately, the Bible does not say anywhere that we are obligated to share our wealth with those less fortunate. It encourages it, but and ONLY by way of our free will on the giving end. The moment giving becomes obligatory is the moment it ceases to be a gift and the moment it becomes a form of taxation or an open door to impose a form of tax in the future. To slip obligation in there changes the game and opens the door to simply take it from you, afterall you are obligated. You‘ve gotta wonder who will decide on how much is enough and what will they do when they feel you’re not “giving” enough. On the recieving end it instructs us in Proverbs not to accept gifts from a stingy person. Do they care to obey God’s word on this matter? Of course not.

However these verses have even more to do with giving per free will since rewards from God we are not worthy of, so how much less worthy are we if our giving is done because we felt obligated?! King David refused to offer up sacrafices to God from that which cost him nothing. Likewise “giving” due to obligation is empty, it is giving when we don’t have to give that is driven by love.

23. And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.
24. And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25. And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 8:24pmOne thing is for sure. In the end, we’re all going to know one way or another.
Let us all keep praying for one another that we find our way to heaven, and take as many souls with us as we can.
Come Lord Jesus, be born in our hearts!
Blessings to you in 2012!

Posted on January 2, 2012 at 11:18amFlorida, I appreciate your message. Even though we don’t agree on many things, I think we probably would be fast friends.
We have much in common through Jesus Christ. Blessed are the meek.
Have a great 2012!
