Popular NFL Running Back Defends bin Laden: ‘We’ve Only Heard One Side’

PITTSBURGH (The Blaze/AP) — Rashard Mendenhall has created a stir with comments made on his official Twitter page regarding Osama bin Laden’s death. The Pittsburgh Steelers running back on Monday tweeted: “What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side…”

Popular NFL Running Back Defends bin Laden: Weve Only Heard One SideMendenhall didn’t hold back, even making a reference to the Sept. 11 attacks.

“We’ll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.” That tweet, however, has since been deleted.

The Steelers felt compelled to act. On Tuesday, team president Art Rooney II released a statement.

“I have not spoken with Rashard, so it is hard to explain or even comprehend what he meant with his recent Twitter comments. The entire Steelers organization is very proud of the job our military personnel have done and we can only hope this leads to our troops coming home soon.”

Mendenhall, who profiles himself as a “conversationalist and professional athlete” on his Twitter page, turned some heads in March, as well, when he supported a comment by Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson comparing the NFL to “modern-day slavery.”

“Anyone with knowledge of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel eachother,” Mendenhall posted at the time.

Mendenhall is coming off a tremendous season, as he led the AFC champions in carries (324), rushing yards (1,273) and rushing touchdowns (13). He has 2,439 yards in three seasons since being drafted in the 2008 first round out of Illinois.

In the 2010 postseason, Mendenhall ran for 230 yards on 61 carries in three games with four touchdowns, as Pittsburgh defeated the Baltimore Ravens (31-24) and New York Jets (24-19), before falling to the Green Bay Packers 31-25 in the Super Bowl.

Among his other bin Laden tweets:

“I believe in God. I believe we’re ALL his children. And I believe HE is the ONE and ONLY judge.”

“Those who judge others, will also be judged themselves.”

“For those of you who said you want to see Bin Laden burn … I ask how would God feel about your heart?”

“There is not an ignorant bone in my body. I just encourage you to think.”

Mendenhall’s string of tweets ended around 6 p.m. Monday. He has not tweeted since.

Sports radio talk shows in Pittsburgh – and around the nation – were fielding calls on Tuesday about his comments.

Mendenhall has 13,631 followers on Twitter, and he personally follows 66. Included in the group he’s following is the Dalai Lama, comedian Sarah Silverman and the Park Community Church in Chicago.

    And in regards to the celebrating. It has nothing to do with celebrating death. It has everything to do with celebrating life and freedom. There were many that were living imprisoned lives (emotionally and physically) under the violence and terrorism that Bin Laden fueled. Now that he is gone, there is a new peace of mind and freedom that can be lived.

    Well, everyone has his/her own opinion. Personally, I saw binladen’s side of the story, and it wasn’t good on any level, I don’t think.

    If I owned a sports team, a modeling team, a car team whatever that did not to a man and or woman support this country, our flag and our GOD, that person/those persons would be welcome to find another job, a.s.a.p.

      Hold on a sec. I am not a truther, but the government has not been 100% upfront about 9/11 either.

      Did you know that when Osama Bin Laden was still listed as alive and #1 on the FBI’s most wanted fugitive list, he was *NOT* listed for a role in 9/11? THE GOVERNMENT ITSELF SAID THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO LINK BIN LADEN TO 9/11.

      I believe in killing this man because I believe he was a terrorist at war with the USA, and most of all because he was not an American and has no rights under our constitution. However, I also have no problem with people asking questions or asking for proof. As of today, OBL was never convicted of anything and it is quite responsible and human for someone to ask “Are we sure we got the right guy? Did we kill an innocent man?” As I said, I believe the answer to those questions are respectively “Yes” and “No” and I‘m glad he’s dead. But it *is* a noble question to ask.

      I have no problem with the USA going completely Viking Berserker on the rest of the world, but then let’s not pretend to be Christians or above the ignorant Muslim hordes (which as of this point I believe we still are better than the Muslims and I hope we are still Christian.) But being better than the Muslims involves a quest for justice and the capability to question ourselves to ensure it is justice being served, not blood lust. In this case I believe we succeeded, but it is STILL a noble question.

      I can’t disagree with his assessment that God would want us to forgive and love our enemies. That we are all His children and how would we would think about God would feel about our hearts.
      However, I DO take umbrage with his agreeing with Adrisan Peterson, that the NFL is like slavery. That is sheer lunacy, to be able to drive your Ferrari to the stadium to practice, then to take your wife (if you are un-selfish enough to have one) to an expensive dinner, decked out in an Armani suit and your wife in diamonds, that 98% of the people can only dream about.       The bottom line is no amount of blood, either UBL’s or American troops will stop terrorism. You can not stop an idea with blood. The right idea will always prevail although it may not be when you want it to. Look back at slavery, had the south won the war I am certain that the idea of slavery would still be abolished today. Eventually society would have realized the atrocities of it. There was no need for war and bloodshed on a massive scale and a horrible scar in our nations history. Everyday our empire grows larger and larger as we attempt to force democracy on other soviergn nations. If those nations want democracy then the people will decide when the times right. We only cause instability and hatred when we meddle in the affairs of soviergn nations. We have no right to tell another nation what they can/cant, must/must not, or what to believe/not believe. We are on the verge of the worst financial meltdown this nation has ever seen, we have shanty towns popping up all over the U.S., we are consumed in debts beyond imagination, the unemployment rate is only getting worse, the housing market grows nearer another collapse every month, and dont even get me started on the amount of derivitaves out there. Meanwhile we are worried about bombing a nation we have no interest what so ever in (Lybia) yet ignoring a slaughter in Syria, the drug cartels grow bolder everyday and are partnering up with Hamas, China is set to dump 2 of the 3 trillion dollars they own, Saudi arabia is working out deals to work with Russia and China instead of us since we angered them for the way we handled Egypt, BRIC (Brazil,Russia, India, China) among other countries had a meeting recently calling for a new reserve currency and guess who didnt get invited? Yet we are worried about the next jersey shore, or who what when and where UBL was killed. The apathy in this country and everyone focusing on petty issues is going to push this great nation over the edge. You will wake up and wonder where your country went. We are being left in the pages of history and being set up to be the bad guy people. After America falls there will not be anyone left to stand in the way of the people who want global governance. Mr. Soros has stated that America is standing in the way of his open society (world government) We can deal with the petty issues later people, focus on the ones that matter or there will no longer be a republic

      Uh, I would like to point out that no one heard the viewpoints of passengers and crew in the airplanes, the people in the Twin Towers, or the Pentagon or the firefighters and police and other first responders that died that day. Some how, just maybe, I think their voices would drown out bin Laden’s.

      TECHENGINEER: I try to wake everyone up to the fact that we are on the precubice of falling just like every other empire before us. All everyone seems to be worried about is who said what to who and petty little things like that. Everyone just to marginalize everyone into nice little neat left/right, dem/repub then point the finger at eachother. It doesnt take an economist to realize the ship is sinking fast and were squabbling over what an nfl player said? I dont even recognize my country anymore. I certainly wont blame one side for all of us are guilty. The politicians stopped representing the people along time ago, theyre poisoned with self interest and they know best mentality. The people are so apathetic it amazes me. Those that are awake focus on the small details instead of the ones that truly matter. The left has embraced socialism and social programs, the right wants small government but dont go near their medicare/medicaid and social security (its only 66% of the big government budget) If we continue down this path their will be nothing for anyone. The government will collapse under all its debt, the world market will go into freefall, all government handouts will stop coming, grocery stores shelves will be empty, there will be riots in the streets, crime will go up ten-fold, the police will be unable to help you because they will be too consumed and over burdened (I was in new orleans immediately after the hurricane, Ive seen it first hand) People need to wake up and really decide what is more important their country or their stuff?
