‘Pork Eating Crusader’: Is ‘Infidel’ Apparel and Gear Gaining Popularity With the Troops?

A line of “Infidel” apparel and gear is reportedly gaining popularity among the troops overseas.  According to Business Insider‘s Robert Johnson:

With tensions at an all time high in Afghanistan following the Koran burnings, the urination video, and the killing of 16 civilians, attention is now falling on a long line of “Infidel” apparel and gear.

Exhausted from how they feel they’re being perceived, troops have taken to wearing patches and carrying items that label themselves infidels, and offer translation in local dialect.

[...]

Military.com tracked down Clayton Montgomery at Mil-Spec Monkey, a large online seller of infidel gear, who says his most popular item by far is the “Pork Eating Crusader Patch.”

The patch includes an image of a knight in a Crusade’s tunic, eating what appears to be a large ham hock, and lest there be any confusion — a translation in Arabic.

There’s even an “Infidel” zippo, which is advertised as, “This one is small enough to hold some personal meaning and not be in-your-face to everyone you meet. It’s perfect for pulling out at just the right moment to get the full effect.”

The website “Islamic Awakening” has a thread discussing the new trend.  There, people have responded by saying things like, “you are what you eat,“ and ”hopefully he [the man from the photo] got grilled by an IED.”
Do you think the “Infidel” line is deliberately and unnecessarily provocative, or is it a sarcastic way to embrace the insults?

Personally, I think it’s refreshing to see a bit of a hard edge coming back into the mindset of the American soldier. Back in WWII we were tough, but now with political correctness and the BS rules of engagement, our troops can do nothing but back down and second guess their decisions. Indeed, the enemy may hate our troops more for wearing the apparel, but aren’t they already trying to kill our troops anyway? Yes, pouring gasoline onto a fire might make it bigger, but the fire was already burning in the first place.

In WWII we were motivated by the fact that a very evil power was spreading through Europe. It is easy to be “tough” when you know you are fighting for the right cause. In these middle eastern wars there isn’t a clear cut enemy or cause for why we are spending billions of dollars and thousands of US lives over there. As Americans we are raised on GI Joe and we think that the ultimate sign of strength is in having a huge military and “kicking ass.” Yes, military is important, but we need to start using our brains and figure out why, in this age of computers, medicine, space exploration, and the internet, do we need to go massacre hundreds of thousands of people in the name of “fighting for freedom.” ?? What are we gaining? Where is the proof that this has helped our country? I am a proud American who thinks we have the best constitution. The Declaration of Independence states that “all men are created equal.“ We need to start living by that motto and not treat anyone on this earth as disposable or ”less than.” Killing people because you don’t agree with them is not an honorable way of life, whether done by terrorists or US soldiers. By the way, we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. INVADED. Oh and NONE of the 9/11 hijackers were from Afghanistan or Iraq. We should not be asking/ordering our soldiers to be serving in these wars. Bring them home. Learn from mistakes. Move on.

The troops are only allowed to wear specific unit patches on their uniform. This patch would not be allowed, but it would go great on fatigues worn for hunting or hiking. My ex-army husband still wears his BDU pants in the mountains or when he’s working on his truck.

But Obama said Afghanistan was the right war at the right time, and that Iraq could not be won.

I wonder if Alexander the great said Afghanistan was the right war at the right time?

I wonder if the British empire thought Afghanistan to be a good place to build a nation?

I wonder if the Soviet Union thought Afghanistan to be the right war at the right time?

I wonder why people listend to a community organizer on matters of such importance. the boy president never so much as served in the cub scouts, let alone has any idea of anything military related.

Let me show you the newest line of death and destruction, and I’ll give them to you for the low, low price of you engaging me. I even have the brand new bacon flavor, but sorry. Why institute a draft. All you would do is cut the existing battle force in half. Half to fight the war and the other half to babysit the draftees. Sure, many will be very useful, but some will be a pain in the backside.

We sent soldiers who volunteered to protect the country. Why not let them do their job?

Sorry to hear about the 16 — but what if they were harboring the Taliban who set IED the day before. We are much to quick to label our soldiers as criminals and baby killers.

      Sharra,

What you fail to recognize is that this “sentiment”, as dark and sarcastic as it is, is nothing new. It is not normal for our or NATO troops to want to kill people indescriminantly. This is a way to cope with the reality they deal with daily. I’d be willing to bet most of the patches are owned by civilians in the US. I’ve seen them around at civvy training plenty. This patch is tame compared to some that are available.

And to those who want others to STFU, when they say bring our troops home… Our troops aren’t allowed to fight to win. I’d argue since WWII. Either let them do their job, which is to shoot people and break stuff, or bring them home. There will be no clear victory as that entire area will go back to the way it was if not worse as soon as we leave as the muslim countries haven’t learned to separate “church and state” Sharia will rule, and they will remain in the exact state if not a worse theocracy than before. Its a waste of lives (both good afghanis and US & NATO troops) and money at this point. Money that we haven’t had in nearly a decade I might add.

Respecting the enemy has not been a common aspect of warfare. At most methods of fair fighting were respected with regard to lining up facing one another or that sort of thing, but even then, any advantage that could be had by taking some other tactic would be utilized, TO WIN, which should be the goal in any war. But that sort of respect did not extend to the enemy as people, they were still the enemy that needed to be beat. You wouldn’t be fighting them if you respected them. In our modern era we have completely destroyed all notions of what war is and should be. We could wipe the Afghans off the face of the earth, we could destroy their mosques, we could teach them Christianity, teach them that Muhammad is evil, make them work like slaves on projects instead of just building schools for them, etc. etc. We should have broken them, instead we played around and wasted ten years, trying to respect those who deserve no respect, only contempt.

Maybe it is just semantics but no way, everyone hated the Nazis. Sure, one can respect the fighting ability of a hated enemy, that is normal, but that doesn’t mean you respect them as people, as who they are and what they fight for. They were called Krauts, and don’t forget the Japs, or Gooks. This phony respect you speak of is what has made us fail in Afghanistan and Iraq. We should have been mocking Muhammad and Islam, really emasculating them and everything they stand for. WAR WAR WAR WAR WAR, instead we served them tea and crumpets with our pinky finger in the air, and then wonder what went wrong.

Last time that happened was about 1952, Korea. The difficulty the americans seem to be having for the past 50 years or so, is that we seem to have a penchant for running half way around the world , to a country that has been “undiversified”. Since the “sandals on the ground” are indigenous”, and they probably have never heard about the Geneva convention, nor is there any other imputus for uniforms. The whole honr thing takes a little twist.

You should always respect your enemy, when you fail to do so is when you slip up and end up dead. These are called Morale Patches and help relieve stress amongst our troops. The problem is that our enemies in Afghanistan don’t have any respect for us, and until we lose the PC rules of engagement and start fighting this like a war, they never will. When we let them know that if we take incoming fire from a village, we’ll simply level the village and simply move on. That’s how we fought WWII and it works. We didn’t apologize for firebombing Dresden, or any of the other cities we leveled in Germany. When your enemy mistakes compassion for weakness, you show them no compassion.

Obama may think that our troops are just fighting resources but they are human beings who get tired, hurt, and become frustrated by being put in an impossible situation. Before the Soviets invaded, there were no modern roads, plumbing, nor electricity. There was never any “infrastructure” for us to target. All the weapons that the Taliban possessed, were mostly commandeered from the Soviets. We should have went into Afghanistan, eliminated as many Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters as possible, and then left.

If given the chance they would kill you, your family, your neighbors and your dog…all before breakfast! Strength is the only thing they understand. If they haven’t chosen to help us already (some have) they will only be swayed from their course by death… not some stupid hearts and minds campaign. We show our respect by NOT cutting off the heads of the dead or dragging their broken bodies through the streets. They have not, nor ever will show us such courtesy! Personally I always found “Grunt” to be a demeaning term…so I dub you JUSTAWARRIOR!

Saw this on barenakedislam yesterday and I think it’s just fine. The soldiers are told they are infidels, they are demeaned by thei CinC, the Sec. of Defense and a large portion of the American public.
They are tired. They have found a way to let their feelings out amongst themselves and to the enemy.

I have no doubt the Muslims, the liberals and the MSM will be OUTRAGED over this. They will call it insensitive and probably call for investigations and punishments.

I say leave the soldiers ALONE. Let them wear their patches. It sure as hell isn’t going to make the Muslims hate them anymore than they already do.

God Bless our combat soldiers and please protect them from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Yes. Can you imagine what it must feel like to be over there, see your buddies killed daily, while your commander-in-chief has decided this is a wasted effort and a fruitless war. To say nothing of the Democrats previous rhetoric against Guantanamo , their continual abu ghraib coverage, and their General-Be-Tray-us / Blame Bush rants. Must be tough slough for the military under this International Left leaning administration….

This is the sense of humor which got our troops through WWII, but which is now going to make the Lefties sense of Political Correctness explode ! Soon the NYT, old foul- mouth Mahrer, and the General Be-Tray-Us Crowd will be running around with their hair on fire and slamming all of those ignorant, nasty , insensitive military brutes who ruin our economy with their wasted spending on unnecessary nasty weapons which we do not need today since Obama is working with the rest of the world to bring peace and restore American’s image ….
