Portland State University Offering ‘Revolutionary Marxism’ Course — And Wait Until You See the Syllabus

Portland State University is offering a number of controversial courses this semester, the likes of which include “Revolutionary Marxism: Theory and Practice,“ and ”Art Within Activism” (though students are also welcome to take “Exploring Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).

Portland State University Offering Revolutionary Marxism, Course Where Students Work with Occupy Wall Street

The “Revolutionary Marxism” course is introduced in what appears to be the syllabus:

The onset of the Arab Spring, revolts in European capitals against austerity, and the emergence of Occupy Wall Street here in the US have made the need for understanding revolutionary political theories [more] urgent than ever.

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of Marxist thought with an emphasis on the practical applications of Marxist Theory in local political struggle.  We will focus on four major areas throughout the semester, including the Fundamentals of Marxist Theory, Marxism and Oppression, Revolutionary Practice, and The Future of Socialism.  In exploring these four areas of focus, the course will compare and contrast revolutionary Marxism to Stalinism, reformist socialism, leading academic interpretations of Marxism, as well as other radical leftist ideologies. [Emphasis added]

The course’s instructors, Grant Booth and Wael Elasady, are both admitted socialists.  They define the course’s goals as:

1.  Students will learn the fundamentals of Marxist theory

2.  Students will apply a Marxist analysis to current events

3.  Students will apply Marxist theory to local political and community organizing

Moreover, students will seemingly be required to forge a “community connection” with a local community/political organization from a specified list.  Some of the “approved” organizations include: Occupy PSU, Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights, Occupy Portland, Portland Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions Coalition (BDS), Jobs with Justice, and the May Day Coalition.

Similarly, the “Art Within Activism” course is described:

Rediscover your radical imagination! This course will focus on creating art within Portland-based activist initiatives, such as marches, actions, and causes different grassroots community groups are working on, like the Occupy and Decolonize movements. We will experiment with applying diverse mediums—graphic design, social practice, printmaking, and sculpture—to actions seeking to resolve diverse problems—hegemony, biodiversity loss, immigrant detention, animal exploitation, debt, insufficient healthcare, etc.

The controversial courses are part of the Chiron Studies program, where qualified students can “propose and instruct official, for credit classes” with the university.

Someone at the school recently took some video of the marketing material for the courses:

The Blaze attempted to contact numerous officials in charge of approving the courses, in addition to Wael Elasady (who teaches the “Revolutionary Marxism” course), in order to confirm the course details, but we did not hear back.

That leaves a lot of unanswered questions, such as: Why is the taxpayer helping pay for these courses at a public university?  With socialist professors and mandated participation with leftist groups, is the other side being presented at all?

Moreover, would Portland State University allow a “Limited Government: Theory and Practice“ course where students were forced to make a ”connection” with Tea Partiers and the NRA?

And when coupled with the likes of “Exploring Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” it’s not hard to figure out why the U.S. education system is under fire.

UPDATE: Wael Elasady, one of the professors of “Revolutionary Marxism: Theory and Practice,“ returned our call and wanted to clarify that students are free to ”apply a Marxist perspective” to any local community/political organization; the list of organizations on the syllabus are simply pre-approved.

      A course on Marxism is instructive. I’ve read Marx and Engels. It is pure utopian, human nature ignoring crap, but I’ve read it.

      Forcing students to partner with Marxist-like organizations is the step too far in this course. It’s the equivalent of studying abortion and then forcing students to advocate that women go to the abortion clinic.

      Studying is Marxism one thing. Forced action is, well…Marxist.

      Growing up in Oregon, there was a gradual change from a republic to socialist state. Working there and meeting some professors from the university where I lived…I was advised from a friend they were communist thinkers, I didn’t believe it………those I met, it was true. They have been teaching our children, mine included. This is not a surprise, just the last steps to inception.

      I’m guessing this “IS” news. But I hate to break it to ya’ll, THE top universities in the nation are already teaching communism as the ‘society’ of the future. And corporations and their publishers already claim “we are all socialists now.”

      B.Hussein Obama “IS” a product of one. Where prof. D.Bell, a BHO friend and mentor, taught radical racist and marxist theory.

      This “IS” trickle down marxism. It’s bound to be in our elementary classrooms, where it hasn’t already entered, in just a year or two.

      i would have to agree with separate now – know your enemy, understand how they operate, understand the principles and motivations. However, forcing/coercing students to team up with Marxist components is a bridge too far! It is one thing to gain knowledge of the opposition to understand how to combat it, but is another thing to have them join up. Bottom line – this is subversive material and is designed to educate/brainwash students into believing Marxism is somehow better than Capitalism and to fight to destroy the latter. I oppose this curriculum 100% as is. I would support it if it were to gain the understanding of what it is, and how to compare on contrast the similarities and differences, period.

      I say pull Portland State’s federal and state funding unless they get rid of the course…and pass a state law that abolishes tenure at college and universities to get rid of the socialist/Marxist/fascist college professors at those institutions.

      I’m sick and tired of paying taxes for state-funded colleges and universities to turn our young people against the principles that have made this country what it was ten years ago….but is not today.

      If the people of Oregon who pay taxes had any ******, they would start making demands of the use of their tax money. OTOH, if this university is funded entirely upon student tuition, then it’s the idiot parents who pay for their children to go to such a university. I double-dog guarantee you that if parents start making demands with their wallets and the professor’s salaries start falling, this university WILL take notice.

      Of course, non-progressives literally suck at organizing and making demands. That‘s why we’re in the boat we are today. If we cannot learn from the progressives how to take over a country, we are doomed to failure.

    Isn’t that cute. Our own little public university teaching our kids how to overthrow the United States while getting the United States to pay for its own overthrow. Amazing. I would put this offering in the same category as college courses in How to Burn Down Public Places, How to Cheat on Your Taxes, and Breaking Laws for Fun and Profit. How much longer will patriotic Americans put up with funding programs that teach youth to destroy the structure of society?

I couldn’t help but see the serve the earth poster. whatever happened to serving your fellow man and feeding those in need? nope these kids are being taught to hate freedom, hate israel (the pro pralestinian group just disgusts me) and become grass roots commies with no jobs. I am thinking the parents are going to need a class action lawsuit and the tax payers are going to need to rise up and get ALL funding cut for schools like this that teach nothing but nonsense. these kids will never get jobs with education like this.

      They (communists) are like termites in your home, they destroy it from within, and you can’t see them readily. You have to know the signs and what to look for, in order to combat them. Mud tunnels up the foundation walls, probe with a screwdriver to find soft spots in the wood, piles of wood dust on the floors, baseboards, well you get the picture.

      These Marxist professors are hard to spot, on first blush, one has to interview them prior to sending your child to a university or college, but who has the time. Also, would they give you their most candid of interviews? One would have to be awful thorough and smart to catch them in a lie, or to extract the info necessary.

      It will most likely come down to a civil war to fully extract and exterminate these vermin from our ranks, but that is not something that is desirable or wanted. To think of it this way, our kids having been indoctrinated by this filth, would also have to be routed – not a pleasant thought at all. I would rather try to educate them to the truth – Communism fails, Socialism fails, just look to history and current events in Europe. Capitalism can be a success, free markets have to be unrestrained, but rules have to be established and adhered to. We have crony capitalism and socialism light here right now, and it would not take much to push us to full blown marxism here, but that would mean war! I, for one, would never advocate that, but if our freedoms get taken away, then it would be inevitable

      @UNIX – if you kid goes to college (other than Hillsdale and a FEW others), there’s a 99% chance he/she will be taught by a Marxist; mine are – then I took on the president of the college, raised awareness among other fellow Patriot parents but never did get that tenured POS “professor” removed. So we changed colleges. Now I’m actively working through my congressman & senators to get that stupid college defunded.

      So if/when these idiot radicals decide to “purge” the (former) American society of people like me I hope they put me on top of their list, say good-bye to their families cuz I hit what I aim at. :)

    Just think, they could ask Obama in as a guest speaker and he would fit right in. This is why the transcripts of his papers from college are unattainable as they would show his leanings toward these teachings. I have studied Marx and see much of his belief system and many of his practices within the Obama agenda.

    A MUST VIEW video of Grant Booth noted as a Communist

    March 30, 2011: Following a U-Choose Event the videographer is given the opportunity (with the subject’s consent) to interview a Communist, Grant Booth. Booth is a member of the International Socialists Organization (ISO) which advocates Trotsky Communism. The group was caught on tape last Tax Day leading an angry, violent counter protest to the TEA Party. The group’s President Neil Thomas Loehlein is featured standing with those who made racist and homophobic comments. Portland State University conducted an official investigation into the incident. Booth was recently arrested as a part of the Occupy Portland movement in downtown Portland. Occupy’s illegal protest cost the city of Portland in excess of $1.75 Million dollars.

    The sad part is just applying for this course would have disqualified you from getting a security clearance not so long ago. Now it might be a resume enhancement. BHO wouldn’t have qualified for a security clearance 30 years ago. I know that for a fact as I know what questions they asked me.

      You are absolutely right. There’s no way Obama would get a security clearance. I don‘t understand how we can have an occupier of the WH that couldn’t even qualify for a SC. That should be a bare-minimum requirement.

      When the Army had a Counterintelligence Corps, we did background investigations for Top Secret security clearances. There is no way Obama, most of his cronies, the teachers of this course and the students would have been cleared. Their butts would have been drafted and they would all be 11Bravos.

      The Chiron Studies program lets students come up with the classes and teach them on their own time. Some students from the International Socialist Organization wanted to teach a class on Revolutionary Marxism, so they are. If ya’ll want to teach Capitalism 101, go apply.

You’ve got me wondering if maybe Ron Paul beat you up as a kid? Maybe he stole your girlfriend in high school?       DJ. The context is absolutely NOT lost on me. Ron Paul is notorious for regurgitating crap from America’s enemies and the enemies of freedom. I don‘t really care why he said it and what he thought he mean’t by it… what I care about is who he used as an example for his ridiculous musings.

      He has regurgitated tired old talking points from the left in our country for years, he has regurgitated Bin Laden’s and Al-Qaeda’s words, along with the rest of radical Islam… he has even regurgited Rearend Wright‘s and Malcom X’s words.

      You can play patty cake in the mud with Ron Paul as one of his acolytes and try to make it about me, but you can’t ever get away from the fact that Ron Paul is a half-wit when it comes to anything other than maybe some monetary issues (and even with that he’s a flawed libertarian simpleton), so you’ll ignore, spin and try to explain away (just as Obama acolytes) all the poor choices he makes and examples he uses to get his mostly idiotic message across. To me Ron Paul’s message is anti-American, and I have no problem with exposing even the smallest comment of his to bring that to light. And it doesn’t end with Ron Paul either… so it doesn’t end with my screen name.

      So go ahead and make it about me because you haven’t got much else. But you already knew that eh? Sound money, end the fed, and extreme paranoia… that’s all you got.

      You are projecting now. We could see the meltdown starting around the time Cain dropped out. Then Newt self destructing and now Santorum.

      See, all this could have been avoided if you just listened to me 8 months ago when I told you that you’d be voting for Romney anyway in the end. Paul had no chance from the beginning.     The million dollar question is how can one organize against the Marxist machine which seems to have overtaken our public schools and universities. Perhaps corporations should train their own workers and avoid hiring college graduates.

    I’m a graduate of PSU. Strangely, this does not surprise me in the least. While I was there, I felt extremely alienated. I spoke out as much as I could when the profs started espousing their leftist ideals as facts. Obviously the “university” has devolved even more since I was there. Seriously considering sending my diploma back to them and demanding a refund. This crap is beyond the pale.

      capitalist salaries and pension plans and health insurance benefits and life insurance and disability insurance and other, various perks. If you don‘t like a college’s anti-American teachings, CUT OFF THEIR MONEY.
