SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (The Blaze/AP) — A man opened fire with an automatic weapon Friday in what authorities called a terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia. A policeman and the gunman were wounded, but the embassy said none of its employees was hurt.

Bosnian TV identified the shooter as Mevlid Jasarevic, from Novi Pazar, Serbia. It said he is a Wahabi follower, but did not cite its sources. The Wahabis are an extremely conservative branch of Islam which is rooted in Saudi Arabia and linked to religious militants in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Sarajevo Mayor Alija Behmen said the gunman “got off a tram with a Kalashnikov and started shooting at the American Embassy.” Witnesses told Bosnian television that the man urged pedestrians to move away, saying he was targeting only the embassy.

One police officer guarding the building was wounded before police surrounded the gunman. After a 30-minute standoff, the sound of a single shot echoed and AP video showed the shooter slump to the ground.

Police arrested the wounded man – who one of Bosnia’s three presidents said is a foreigner – and took him away in an ambulance as pedestrians cowered behind buildings and vehicles. Hospital spokeswoman Biljana Jandric told The Associated Press the gunman had a minor wound to his leg, and would spend the night at the hospital before being released into police custody.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said several bullets struck the outside wall of the embassy, but that all embassy personnel were safe. She said the wounded police officer had been assigned to protect the embassy. Ambassador Patrick Moon expressed his gratitude for the swift response by the police.

“Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with those who put their lives on the line to protect the embassy,” Nuland told reporters.

Bakir Izetbegovic, one of Bosnia’s three presidents, issued a statement condemning “the terrorist attack on the embassy of the United States.”

“The United States is a proven friend of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Its government and its people supported us in the most difficult moments in our history and nobody has the right to jeopardize our relations,” he said.

Zeljko Komsic, chairman of Bosnia’s presidency, said the attacker is a foreigner previously known to police. He told AP that authorities have not yet determined whether the attack “was the act of an individual, or something organized.”

“But whatever it was, it is not just an attack on the U.S. Embassy or the U.S., it is also an attack on Bosnia and Herzegovina,” he said.

A Sarajevo city official, Muhamed Budimlic, told The Associated Press that a policeman guarding the embassy was injured.

      His war was a little more complicated and devious than being just a wag the dog experience. It was a bargain struck between the Muslim terrorist and the Clinton Administration. Clinton basically struck a deal with them that if they would quit attacking American symbols and interest around the world—– The Cole; US Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and a host of other attacks; remember, 9-11 was the second attempt to bring the WTC down—– he (Clinton) would remove Slobodan Milosevic from the Balkans thus eliminating one of the obstructions facing the spread of Islam from the near east to mainland Europe. Clinton wasn’t deliberately trying to help the spread of Islam– he was trying to protect his legacy of the Presidency. Repeated terrorist attacks on his watch would be a pox on his legacy,, plus it complicated his effectiveness to push his domestic agendas…
      Milosevic wasn’t the “Balkan Butcher” that the Clinton Administration and Gen.     Wouldn‘t it be nice to go back to the times when there wasn’t a story about a Muslim somewhere committing some atrocity on a daily basis? If the story isn’t about them bombing, beheading,shooting or using some other method to kill someone we have them demanding their “rights.“ The ”right”to have Catholic universaries provide prayer space without those pesky Christian icons like the cross being there. Or their “right” for Muslim women to wear full face veils for drivers liscense photos. Or their “right” to demand certain foods and prayers space for them in prison, their “right” to have Sharia law regardless of the country they have invaded. Their “right” not to be offended by thought, word or deed.

    As an American and as a Christian I am offended by these people every single day. I wonder what it will take for everyone to wake up and realize that these people will never be satisfied until they have destroyed every decent place on the planet in the name of Allah.

      I agree. Muslims want to conquer the world by the sword. They have not progressed with the rest of the human race. We will be forced into killing these radicals just to survive. I ahte to even have to think this way. They are barbaric and want to cut off heads. This beheading is mentioned in the bible.     Bosnia gets it done. No US citizens were hurt, stupid terrorist gets to meet his maker, no “3 hots and a cot,” no lengthy drawn out trial, no live news on the scene, etc. Just think of how much money they saved their citizens.

    Of course the really funny part is with all the violence in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, the killing of Osama Bin Laden and that guy in Yemen, I’m sure paradise ran out of virgins a long time ago. They all did it for nothing!!!

    Eastern Europe has suffered under Islamic Jihad for centuries and this is only a continuation of the civilizational struggle between Islamic Imperialism and Western Civilization.
