Prepare for ‘Banxodus’: Thousands Pledge to Close Their Bank Accounts

Mass removals of cash from banks can be a very dangerous thing. It can cause what is referred to as a “bank run,” that is, it has the potential to increase a bank’s chance of defaulting and force it into bankruptcy.

If this occurs at enough major banks (such as Bank of American, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, etc.) the results could be disastrous. However, despite this historically proven fact, a Facebook group is calling for protesters to close their bank accounts en masse.

They are calling it “Bank Transfer Day” and it will happen Saturday Nov. 5 (it’s assumed the Nov. 5th is an important date to protesters given the enormous presence of those Guy Fawkes masks ["Remember, remember, the fifth of November"]).

The group was started by a Facebook user who had heard about Bank of America’s $5 fee and posted an event on Facebook. So far, 75,061 Facebook users have said they will be attending, while 16,007 will “maybe” attend, reports CNN Money.

Prepare For Banxodus As Thousands Pledge to Close Their Bank AccountsMany dissatisfied consumers have already left their banks or have pledged to do so. Many of them say that they will take their money and put it into smaller community banks or credit unions, which commonly have fewer and/or lower bank account fees.

“At least 650,000 consumers have already joined credit unions since Sept. 29, the day Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500) announced plans to impose its controversial $5 debit card fee, according to a nationwide survey of credit unions by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA),” reports CNN Money.

“The new memberships in October amount to $4.5 billion in new savings accounts,” CUNA said.

Despite the fact that Bank of America and other banks have backed off the debit card fee, consumers are still unhappy. More than four in every five credit unions said new customers cited days like “Bank Transfer Day” and new fees imposed by their banks as reasons for opening accounts, reports CNN.

Watch the CNN video that asks people about Bank Of America dropping the debit card fee. Apparently, the bank has “really flawed ethical, like, policies, you know?”

“We must flee all those banks now!!! They will be adding hidden fees shortly! Drop the credit cards and go to credit unions to avoid this pitfall,” one CNN Money reader wrote.

The Independent Community Bankers of America said a poll of its 5,000 members conducted on Oct. 17 found that nearly 60 percent of community banks are gaining customers who are upset with bigger financial institutions. The association’s community bank locator has seen more than 5,000 inquiries in the last few weeks — an increase of nearly 500 percent, according to CNN.

It’s important to note that there may elements greater than customer dissatisfaction at play. According to the same CNN report:

“Move Your Money Day” [a similar initiative] and “Bank Transfer Day” are backed by consumer groups like MoveOn.org and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), which are urging customers to switch banks by this Saturday — and turning to social media outlets like Facebook to do their convincing [emphases added].

Reportedly, almost 52,500 have pledged to take their money out of major financial institutions as part of the earlier mentioned Move Your Money “banxodus,” with just under 22,000 consumers planning to remove their money from Bank of America specifically.

An estimated 6,900 customers told the Progressive Change Campaign Committee they have already moved their money.

“They take your deposits and use them to buy politicians to de-regulate, give them immunity, interest-free loans and bailouts. Then they turn around and charge you fees to make them even richer,“ said one ”Move Your Money” flyer posted on a Facebook page dedicated to the initiative (which has 43,679 “likes”).

“Take your money to a credit union or a community bank that will use your money in your community and not to pervert the rule of law and fill their own pockets,” the flyer added.

Meanwhile, not to be outdone by the social network, Occupy Wall Street has formed a similar group, called “Dump Your Bank Day,” which will take place on Tuesday, November 8.

“The big banks will not be charging me a dime in additional fees. I moved my accounts to a great credit union last week,” a CNNMoney reader wrote. “Next week I get to tell Wells Fargo, to put it nicely, to take a hike.”

Does anyone here really think that these protesters have any money? After all… isn’t that the point of the protest…. they’re broke and want free money. Now, the people at the top who are financing this do have money but, they’re in bed with the banks.

The irony. First, once Obama took office, everybody was against the bank bailout which Bush passed with bipartisan support. Most people still think that was passed in Obama’s first term. Now everybody is rooting for the banks.

Sorry, this is America and we have a free market system here. People can take their money out of a bank and put it in another if they choose. Or buy gold, which some would have you do. If you don’t like capitalism and the free market system, maybe you’re in the wrong country.

This is a fractional reserve banking protest against the Banks which are BROKE themselves who got bailed out and takes 90% of deposits and leverages them against the people who bailed them out, while trying to nickle and dime depositors with excessive fees to attempt to recover their bad bets.

The zombie banks are already bankrupt, they invest (gamble) with 90% of deposits. This is fractional reserve banking, you may as well put your money in the one-armed bandit, a slot machine.

They don’t have any reserves. The print money and lend it to the banks to be able to give you money when you withdraw. Put in $10? There’s only a dollar of your money in there, they just leveraged your $9 to lend out 100 dollars or more, on an exponential curve. This is the derivatives market (derived from debt).

Just because radical fanatics are doing it for nefarious reasons, doesn‘t mean it’s not something one should consider for good reason. Banks have reversed the relationship with clients and consider they’re doing you a favor instead of the other way around.
Did an extensive accounting of the practices and fees of 3 banks in which I had accounts. I was shocked and disgusted at what they were actually doing with my money and decided to close 2 of them. One savings account was used just for emergency transfers if I needed it and always kept $100 in it. Went to close account & found they already took my $100 for so-called “inactivity fees” and was going to try and suck more out of me! All I know is the banks have become as corrupt as those in DC and anyone is a fool to believe your earnings are safe in them.
What good is FDIC insurance from a Govt. that’s 15Trillion in debt and a Fed Res that keeps printing phony money and refuses to show Congress their books?
The OWS bunch and their EVIL controllers can get bent, but I for one have paid attention to how banks have increasingly been screwing people over with their own money and am trying to be as little a part of it as I can.
P.S. Gold may NOT be such a good alternative. Govt forced it’s return once and can do it again.

Right on the money Monk!!! Do these “tycoons of industry” also realize that credit unions have different rules than a “big bad greedy bank”? They actually have a bit more “control” over your ability to use your money….and some have fees higher than even the ones hinted at by the big banks. A credit union can actually stop you from taking money out of your checking account if you have a mortgage with them that is behind…….But I would not guess that many of these freeloaders know what a mortgage even is. All they want is OPM…..other peoples money!………oh yea, and organic chicken….but no homeless people allowed…..amazing….the preachers of “aide” and “assistance” and “community”, won’t even give some food to the homeless! Hypocrisy….maybe. Communism…..absolutely!

Non-event….most that can have bank accounts with the smaller banks already do. We have been with the same small bank for years and live in a different state. Most go to the big boy banks because they were to clueless to take advantage of 5% interest back at the end of the month on checking/debit accounts with the smaller that converted to electronic services for everything. These people are idiots.

SLAPTHELEFT, you may think US citizens should be compelled by the government to leave their money in a bank, and pay the bank for the “privilege” of having it there, and pay more for the “privilege” of withdrawing it. But I believe in capitalism and the free market. That means I can desposit my money where I choose. Maybe you should go live in another country, you anti-capitalist!

Insight, if you don’t think the banks have lobbyists, you’re a little naive. And no, I don’t mean bank lobbies, I think that‘s what’s confusing you.

What is wrong with all you people? I thought this country was all about capitalism and the free market.
The “move your money project” is free market capitalism at its best. Spend/store/invest your money with your choice of bank or credit union. Let the free market decide who is better for your money (and this country). I don‘t like B of A so I don’t put my money there. If enough people agree B of A will either have to be more responsive to its customers or go out of business and let the more efficient, honest banks who really work with their communities prosper.

Once again, I recommend that before you start throwing labels around like socialism or communism, PLEASE understand what those words mean. Putting your money where YOU want and patronizing businesses who do a good job for you and letting the banks compete for your money is capitalism in its purest form.

There would be no money coming from the rich for them either. The OWS people fail to realize that a lot of wealth is only worth something because of the size of our economy. If it collapses, assets such as stocks and real estate would drop precipitously in value erasing trillions in wealth. They might end up with their loans forgiven but it would be small consolation when they are wondering where their food will come from.

      Three things to consider;

      - If the credit union gets all the money wouldn’t that make them the BIG bank, back to square one.

      - “According to….CNN: “Move Your Money Day” a similar initiative] and “Bank Transfer Day” are backed by consumer groups like MoveOn.org and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee ”

(MoveOn.org and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee) they are consumer groups now?

      - The following is a statement that can just as accurately be said about Unions

“They take your deposits and use them to buy politicians….. Then they turn around and charge you fees to make them even richer,“ said one ”Move Your Money” flyer posted on a Facebook page dedicated to the initiative”….“

I don’t think this will amount to a hill of beans. Here’s some math, if a million people moved $10K each out of BAC the total is $10 billion. This is pocket change to the big banks and if they needed some temporary cash it’s likely that the Fed would loan it to them. I’m sure the Fed has other avenues to ensure the solvency of the big banks.

Banking at a credit union is a good alternative though. I’ve had my money in one for years. I like their customer service and don’t get socked with a whole lot of fees.

Other then that they get their money from the goverment. It’s like a dragon fly hitting an 18 wheelers windshield at 60mph.Nov 5th will come and go. The only change will be that my wife is one year older.

The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) is the federal fund created by Congress in 1970 to insure member’s deposits in federally insured credit unions. On July 22, 2010, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was signed into law and included permanently establishing NCUA’s standard maximum share insurance amount at $250,000. All deposit insurance resources reflect this higher level of coverage.

Administered by the National Credit Union Administration, the NCUSIF is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government.

Did I miss something? Tax Payers will pay for Bank Defaults… as a kind of Redistribution of Wealth? And, “Full Faith and Credit” of a Bankrupt Country equals What? So, I am suppose to feel Safe… because Barny Frank, Mr. Economic Disaster, is involved?

      @LUKERW,

Couldn’t agree with you more. They don’t realize that if a bank closes they only hurt themselves and their neighbors. Why? The assets and debt owned by the bank that gets closed are divided by a bank in good standing and the Federal Government 50/50. The Federal Reserve eventually ends up with 50% of the debt which they sell as bonds allowing the Treasury to print more money devaluing the dollar and raising inflation in the long run.

@LURKERW: It is just for saving accounts and not for the investments etc. YOUR Savings are backed by YOUR tax money. And I have no idea how that has anything to do with redistribution of wealth …

@KIDCHARLEMAGNE It’s worth exactly as much as a FDIC Insured account in a Bank.

@THE-MONK Then you read wrong. It‘s exactly the same as the FDIC and it’S their to prevent Bank Runs. (Which Bank Transfer Day isn‘t because they just MOVE their money and don’t take it home and store it in their mattress.)

Then how come it didn’t prevent the bank run that started the day of September 15, 2008?:

“Electronic Run On Banks – $550 Billion Withdrawn In 1 Hour, Federal Reserve Halts Withdrawals – US Economy Would Have Collapsed Capitalism

Rep. Paul Kanjorski of Pennsylvania explains what former Treasury Secretary Paulson and Fed Chairman Bernanke told congress during the September 2008 closed door session. During the first third of the video an enraged caller is ranting to Rep. Kanjorski about how wasteful the first $700 billion bailout was. The best part is 2 minutes and 15 seconds into the tape where Rep. Kanjorski reveals what Paulson and Bernanke told congress that shocked them into supporting the first $700 billion bailout.

On Thursday Sept 15, 2008 at roughly 11 AM The Federal Reserve noticed a tremendous draw down of money market accounts in the USA to the tune of $550 Billion dollars in a matter of an hour or two. Money was being removed electronically.”

I went to BoA the other week (before the $5 debit fee was cancelled) and I wanted to move my $$ over to Wells Fargo, for the sole purpose of a better interest rate with their CDs…nothing more. When I told them that I wanted to close my account, I was brought in to talk to a personal banker who tried to talk me into keeping my money with BoA.

After awhile, the $5 debit fee issue came up, and I told them that while it’s not ideal, it was NOT the reason I wanted to leave BoA. Her honest suggestion for me to avoid the $5 fee if I stayed with BoA was to simply open up a second credit card with them and never use my debit card again. Nothing to the effect of, we‘ll make sure your accounts don’t qualify for the fee…no simple solutions, other than “open up a credit card and use that instead.”

Finally, I went to redeem some credit card miles for an airline ticket. I’ve built up over 10,000 points over the last few years. While I know that 10k points wouldn’t get me a free ticket, I knew it would take some $$ off the ticket price. Oooops, sorry! You can’t redeem points for airline travel until you have 16k points.

What bull. I’m no longer with BoA…moved my modest amount of $$ over to Chase. They gave me $125 for opening up an account. No questions asked!

@ RABIBPATRIOT : Agree the evil big banks make 90 % of their money from the evil big corporations , investments , mortgages . These morons have no clue . The big ripoff charge of $ 5.00 wouldn’t even begin to cover their cost . What these morons don’t get is the good mom and pop stores along with evil Wall Mart raise prices by 4 to 6 % on every iteam in the store to cover the charge for credit / debit transactions that the evil banks impose on them. I wonder if these loons will now demand that the good mom and pop will drop their prices since their fees have been reduced. Try to find a credit union. I live near Charlotte NC and there are around 15 Credit unions with in 50 mile area. Its like finding toilet paper in the woods. I have nothing against Credit Unions . Try getting a mortgage from one. Why aren’t these morons taking their mortgages to the Credit Union along with their checking / savings /. Oh I know, either they can’t afford the cost of re-fy or they can’t qualify because they are under water and the Good Credit Union will not re-fi them just like the evil big banks.

I don’t know how it is now, I’m too far removed, but during the 60s and early 70s there were a lot of poor young people trying to survive and also protesting the war and establishment. What we found was that a lot of these “poor” young people always had eveything they needed/wanted even though they wore the ragged costurmes of the period. They always had nice vehicles and toys, expensive musical instruments and electronics, the best dope, all the alchohol they wanted, tons of hangers on an groupies, and never seemed to sweat the rent, even though there was no visible means of support. These people, come to find out through often drunken conversation, were the progeny of successful wealthy parents, sometimes very old money. They were “slumming”. We used to call them trustafarians. I wonder how many in OWS fall into this category.

I’m glad that the Bank of America got burned for their out-of-control greed fees. As for the protesters planned “run on the banks,” from what I can gather, most of them are losers who never worked a day in their lives. It’s doubtful they are much of a force to be dealt with.

But this run on the bailouts may be useful. There is a Tried-and-True adage in the financial service industry. It’s known as the 80-20 Rule.
It states that about 80% of your profit is derived from about 20% of your (best, richest) clients. Conversely, it states that about 80% of your nuisance, time-wasting trouble is provided by about 20% of your (worst, poorest) clients. If the above story’s prediction comes to pass, the banks in questions will almost certainly be better off for it.
