Prepare to Become a Vegetarian: Scientists Say Spare the Meat, Food Shortages & Water Scarcity Are Coming

Food Shortages & Water Scarcity Could Force People Into Becoming Vegetarians

The droughts of 2012 and a heavy fear of “overpopulation” have caused a few scientists to sound the alarm on the possibility of a global food crisis.

“Water scientists” warn that because of a scarcity of water and a depletion in global food supplies, we “may have to switch almost completely to a vegetarian diet over the next 40 years to avoid catastrophic shortages,” the Guardian reports.

About 20 percent of our diet comes from animal-based products, according to the report, and “water scientists” argue that that number needs to drop to five percent if we plan on feeding the 2 billion people expected in 2050.

“There will not be enough water available on current croplands to produce food for the expected 9 billion population in 2050 if we follow current trends and changes towards diets common in western nations,” a report by Malik Falkenmark and colleagues at the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) said.

“There will be just enough water if the proportion of animal-based foods is limited to 5% of total calories and considerable regional water deficits can be met by a … reliable system of food trade,” the report adds.

While these scientists issue their water warnings, the U.N. is preparing for a possible global food crisis, the second in five years. As mentioned earlier on TheBlaze, the U.S. droughts (as well as droughts in Russia) have caused the price of raw commodities to rise. And while this hasn’t necessarily affected the average American citizen, it has been unpleasant for the foreign countries that depend on U.S. output.

“Oxfam [a human rights group] has forecast that the price spike will have a devastating impact in developing countries that rely heavily on food imports, including parts of Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East. Food shortages in 2008 led to civil unrest in 28 countries,” the Guardian reports.

Scientists argue that that the West should adopt a vegetarian diet because it will spare the water necessary to grow more crops.

“Animal protein-rich food consumes five to 10 times more water than a vegetarian diet. One third of the world’s arable land is used to grow crops to feed animals. Other options to feed people include eliminating waste and increasing trade between countries in food surplus and those in deficit,” the report explains.

But — but — vegetarian?

“Nine hundred million people already go hungry and 2 billion people are malnourished in spite of the fact that per capita food production continues to increase,” the scientists say. “With 70% of all available water being in agriculture, growing more food to feed an additional 2 billion people by 2050 will place greater pressure on available water and land.”

The report will be brought before a body of world leaders, including 2,500 politicians, U.N. bodies, non-governmental groups, and researchers from 120 countries, who will then try to decide what’s best for everyone.

“We will need a new recipe to feed the world in the future,” said the report’s editor, Anders Jägerskog.

Stop using the food to make fuel….This has been a factor in rising food prices the world over and like everything liberal it has been a failure..the crops in the midwest have done poorly this year we can no longer afford to use this needed food to make fuel.

SacredHonor1776- I’m pretty sure Glenn has just been saying IF that ever happens for some reason or another, personally(meaning lose your job) or a natural disaster or whatever, then it is good to be prepared. Let me know if I am mistaken but I know Glenn has talked about crops not being harvested b/c there are not enough “hands on deck” to help get everything done. Because there is a shortage of helpers in the field, a portion of the crop dies b/c it was not harvested in time. This doesn’t sound to me like a shortage of food, but a shortage of people willing to do the hard work of agriculture. I don’t know how to better explain it this.

So the scientist says we need to be vegetarians…..

      Cows eat vegetation.
If we stop eating cows…. cows will continue eating vegetation and,
there will be less vegetation for us.

So, eat the cows and we’ll have more vegetation also.
Sounds like a nice balance to me.

You are right, there are lazy people in California that are causing the food crisis “this year” plus crop problems mid-west due to bad weather, plus the fact that corn is being wasted on ethenol, rather than being used for food. He brought these points up just last week.

2/3 issues are human made problems… The weather, some claim is “human made as well” although Glenn doesn’t agree with that point however.

“In other words, you’ll just stick your head in the sand until it all hopefully blows over.”

No, it’s irrational fear mongering. I think what Detroit Paperboy was referring to is that throughout our history we have had people like this who are so “in the box” when it comes to ideas and thinking that they get people all worked up over stuff like this. (overpopulation, food shortages, water shortages, etc)

There is nothing wrong with being prepared and looking ahead. But to say that we must change our entire way of culinary life, based on a far flung perceived threat, is absurd. Humankind has repeatedly proven throughout history that we can invent and manipulate our environment to survive. We will continue to do this and everything will be OK.

Food? As was pointed out by another, stop making fuel out of it. (that is a huge drain on certain crops) We can grow more food per acre now than we could even a couple decades ago when people were clamoring over stuff like this. Water? We know how to desalinize sea water into drinking water, and the last I checked (according to these same type of people) the oceans are rising.

Studies have shown that diets rich in fruit and vegetables are healthier for you.

I do not think we should be forced to go vegetarian, as a matter of fact, I believe total vegetarianism is not the ideal diet, but I do believe we could benefit from a less meat dominated diet.

Apparently the greentards don’t get it. Animals can turn dry arid wastes with little to eat into a bountiful harvest. Just think, can people effectively eat grasses? No, they can’t. But cows, horses, and sheep can and they are pretty good at it. They can live off of the land where no human could and produce an abundance. So sorry greenies, meat will not be going off of the menu.

Global Warming is a natural not man made condition but even without it 7 billion people and counting will need to be fed. On top of all this there will be social disorder, strikes and riots which will all interupt the food supply. Make a plan, store food and eat veggies as there will be shortages. Consider buying long life foods that can be stored for years to be sure of feeding your family – take a look here http://www.longlifefoodstore.com/what-is-long-life-food/

The scientist’s themselves in the same decade cannot agree. So why do you think someone’s a fool for saying scientists can be wrong? The scientist’s themselves have proved they can be incorrect. Scientist’s can only “hypothesize” (best guess), they cannot prove a damn thing.

There are dozens of examples of this kind of BS fear-mongering by climate/environmental scientists that have been incorrect over and over again. I’ll post this one because it is closely related to the article topic. You shouldn’t be upset when people treat these kinds of dire predictions with skepticism. The skepticism is richly deserved.

“[By] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots…[By 1996] The Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide black blizzard of prairie topsoil will stop traffic on interstates, strip paint from houses and shut down computers.”

“Second people have been hunter gatherers & then herders for hundreds of thousands of years. Are genetics is geared to meat consumption.”

True, but our ancestors ate far less meat then exists in the average Americans diet. We treat meat like the main course, when our ancestors used it like a condiment.

Those of us with diabetes who are serious about “normalizing” our blood sugars, NEED MEAT-BASED proteins, not beans or other plant-based, carbohydrate dense protein sources!

A moderate portion of meat based protein (meat, fish, poultry, eggs or dairy–whole milk, full fat cheeses), a double portion of leafy and other non-sugar vegetables, and a portion of healthy fats (butter, cream, etc.), and those berries that are low sugar, can almost normal blood sugar for type II diabetes and will significantly lower the amount of insulin needed for type I diabetics.

This is a more satiating way of eating, the carbohydrates are kept low (source of carbs is from the veggies), and the fat eaten keeps the ingested carbs from spiking quickly.

Beans and grains contain excessive carbs for the degree of nutrition they provide. We are becoming diabetics because of our grain-filled diet, not inspite of it!

See the teachings of Richard K. Bernstein, MD, 75 year-old, Type I diabetic who has eaten this way for over thirty-five years. Still practicing and healthy!

We’ve all seen this warning before. Learn to hunt and fish. IF meat ever becomes scarce city dwellers without practical skills will have to adjust. The hunters and fishers, they’ll be just fine.

@ Progressiveslayer To disgusting to consider,However we can ship him north to Denali in Alaska, where the bears might make some use of him and transform him to a steaming pile of bear crap..Its a win/ win for everyone, the tree huggers like it because, the bears get fed and removing Moore should ease the burden on the global food supply. the best part is it won’t make any difference for him because he was a pile of crap to start with,

“With 70% of all available water being in agriculture, growing more food to feed an additional 2 billion people by 2050 will place greater pressure on available water and land.”

So if you just send us 50 billion dollars to study this further and come up with bureaucratic solutions, we can have jobs for the rest of our lives.

I don’t think there is any doubt world population will at some point surpass our ability to produce food.
However, I don’t think the majority of us will turn to vegetarianism; I think you will see populations that have access to water and other resources needed to produce meat continue to produce and consume meat at the expense of those who cannot secure those resources.
    Survival of the fittest…

That is if we arent not in a global government socialism/communism. Both the Democrats and many of the Republicans have been pushing us closer and closer to this. Remember what Beck said, when the world government is formed, the rest of the world will not be brought up to our level, we will be brought down to theirs.

Yeah Locked.. and that is why so many vegans I know have more health problems than most of the 10 big mac a day eaten fools…. I agree people need to eat more veggies and less meat, but the sources you listed are only good for short term. You body demands certain complex proteins that can only come from meat/animals (or can only be produced from molecules gleaned from eating meat). I am not going to insult you for your opinion, but all you have to do is look at base biology to see you were designed to consume meat in addition to veggies.
