President and Republicans Reach Debt Deal

President and Republicans Make Debt Deal

President Barack Obama arrives to speak from the White House briefing room, Sunday, July 31, 2011, in Washington, about a deal being reached to raise the debt limit. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

President Barack Obama announced an agreement Sunday night with Republican congressional leaders on a compromise to avoid the nation’s first-ever financial default. The deal would cut more than $2 trillion from federal spending over a decade. While the President and Republican leaders have reached an agreement, the package still needs to be passed in Congress.

Default “would have had a devastating effect on our economy,” Obama said at the White House, relaying the news to the American people and financial markets around the world. He thanked the leaders of both parties.

House Speaker John Boehner telephoned Obama at mid-evening to say the agreement had been struck, officials said.

No votes were expected in either house of Congress until Monday at the earliest, to give rank-and-file lawmakers time to review the package.

But leaders in both parties were already beginning the work of rounding up votes.

In a conference call with his rank and file, Boehner said the agreement “isn’t the greatest deal in the world, but it shows how much we’ve changed the terms of the debate in this town.”

Obama underscored that point. He said that, if enacted, the agreement would mean “the lowest level of domestic spending since Dwight Eisenhower was president” more than a half century ago.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid provided the first word of the agreement.

“Sometimes it seems our two sides disagree on almost everything,” he said. “But in the end, reasonable people were able to agree on this: The United States could not take the chance of defaulting on our debt, risking a United States financial collapse and a world-wide depression.”

The Speaker has sent out this document to members outlining the proposed deal.

The deal includes no tax hikes, with spending cuts that exceed the amount of the increased debt authority. According to the Speaker’s outline the deal would cut and cap discretionary spending immediately saving $917 Billion over 10 years. The framework requires both House and Senate to vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment after Oct. 1, 2011 but before the end of the year.

The framework creates a 12-member Joint Committee required to report legislation by November 23,2011 that would produce a proposal to reduce the deficit by at least $1.5 Trillion over 10 years. Each chamber would consider the Joint Committee proposal on an up-or-down basis without any amendments by December 23,2011. If Joint Committee’s proposal is enacted or if a Balanced Budget Amendment is sent to the states, the President would be authorized to request a debt limit increase of $1.5 trillion.

The Associated Press contributed to this article.

The Tea Party has maybe 80 seats in the house, the Dems control the Senate and White House. Sorry but there is no other option than compromise unless you want the country in depression with 30% unemployment and soaring inflation. The poor and middle class will be making ALL of the sacrifice while the only people who’ve prospered in the pasty 3 decades make none. Way to go teabaggers.

Take names on the yea votes, and GET RID OF THEM.

How STUPID are these people?!!!!! Adding another $8-10 trillion in debt in the next ten years? WHERE is their common sense? Oh that’s right, they don’t teach that at Harvard.

To say I’m angry is the understatement of the year, no make that decade!!

SO, what do we do? We take the lumps that are coming, and PRAY, pray that we survive the next 17 months, and when the TEA party takes over the house, the senate, and the WH, WE DISMANTLE THIS BEHEMOTH OF A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!

WE will balance the budget in THREE years!! And we won’t throw grandma under the bus in the process.

@drattastic — too right!! This is really a glossy-eyed sham, $900 Bil over 10 years is $90 Bil, then $1.5 Tril over 10 years is $150.00 Bil, which is a whopping $200 Bil in cuts, which leaves $1.3 in deficit spending in place over the next 10 years (Bal Budget Amend will not pass states 2/3 test). And the Obumbler gets a wild card at the end? Epic Fail. I am in shock, but at least we avert bread lines and anarchy for a few more months LOL!!!!

      of course they do

he little man sat down, quite at his ease, and yet still with a servant-like air, the air of a valet enjoying a privilege. Winston regarded him out of the corner of his eye. It struck him that the man’s whole life was playing a part, and that he felt it to be dangerous to drop his assumed personality even for a moment. O’Brien took the decanter by the neck and filled up the glasses with a dark-red liquid. It aroused in Winston dim memories of something seen long ago on a wall or a hoarding — a vast bottle composed of electric lights which seemed to move up and down and pour its contents into a glass. Seen from the top the stuff looked almost black, but in the decanter it gleamed like a ruby. It had a sour-sweet smell. He saw Julia pick up her glass and sniff at it with frank curiosity.

‘It is called wine,‘ said O’Brien with a faint smile. ‘You will have read about it in books, no doubt. Not much of it gets to the Outer Party, I am afraid.’ His face grew solemn again, and he raised his glass: ‘I think it is fitting that we should begin by drinking a health. To our Leader: To Emmanuel Goldstein.’

Winston took up his glass with a certain eagerness. Wine was a thing he had read and dreamed about. Like the glass paperweight or Mr Charrington’s half-remembered rhymes, it belonged to the vanished, romantic past, the olden time as he liked to call it in his secret thoughts. For some reason he had always thought of wine as having an intensely swee

      Don’t-Hate-On-Me-2

Just would like to point out one thing that correlates to your post:

Republicans hold the House. Can the Senate pass law without the House? Nope.

If no bill was passed, the House Majority Republicans stood in truth and principle, it would of forced the President and Democrats to cut wasteful spending. Being responsible for ones self, this case Republicans, they should have held to that responsibility by sending creating bills in the house that coincides with their values. Compromising by adding spending in a bill did nothing for Republicans nor did it address the problem. In fact it only enabled the President and Democrats to continue spending, exactly what the Republicans said they stood against. What gain from this compromise did Republicans get?

Remember any spending equals a new tax. Even if taxes aren’t increased in the bill, deficit spending means taxes will have to be collected in future to pay that debt. If anything we spend more in deficit taxes as interest accrues..So by agreeing to increased spending with no tax to fund it we really are worse off and will pay way more.

A self responsible Republican will hold their party accountable first. In doing so I say the Republicans gained nothing and sold us the People out.

      No one prevailed @JZS.
They all are kicking the can down the road. How far that is…yea, I don’t know. Probably not very far. The cuts necessary to begin to bring the debt under control would be so deep the public would scream bloody murder. Federal spending is so lop sided that to balance the budget you would have to make cuts in entitlements and eliminate everything else besides debt service, entitlements and defense. That’s not going to happen. And you would also have to raise taxes significantly. That’s not going to happen, at least this year. Believe me I don’t want that to happen but I know thanks to the insane spending of late it is inevitable. The Obama administration guaranteed this with Tarp, stimulus and Obama care.
The only figures that matter, or tell the true story, 75% of Federal spending is Social Security/Medicare, debt service and defense. Debt service is on pace to eclipse the latter in just a few short years. Defense spending is the smallest of the 3 at about 700 billion. Federal revenue is about 2.5 trillion and we are spending over 3.5 trillion. Our deficit is about 1.5 trillion this year. I’m not even including unfunded liabilities.
So 2 trillion in cuts over 10 years is meaningless. It really doesn’t matter who sold out, who’s a rino and who had the best of intentions. We all lost today!

So that is all we are able to pay for this year. If we balance the budget through cuts alone all federal spending accept the 3 largest budget items above would come to a screeching halt. Parks and recreation, Dept. of Education, Interior, energy, contracts, you name it would have to go. Unfunded liabilities projected to be 114 trillion dollars over the next 20 years. At least I hope it is 20 years. Could not confirm. I assume its not 10 years and doubt it is a 30 or more year projection. Check usdebtclock.org.
No one has the political guts to forge a road down bitter pill way and the public will pitch a fit if we were actually forced to make sacrifices. The public needs to lead the way in this. We will never get a politician that is able to fix 100 years of stupid. A politician by nature cannot fix this.
Furthermore, the responsibility for the mess we find ourselves in is in fact, We the People.

Still haven’t heard many details. Again, I don’t disagree that we need to cut the defense budget. To do that, we need to through attrition reduce troop levels by a third or a half and literally get out of every foreign country on this planet and let the world take care of their own business. We can‘t be the world’s police force. All foreign aid has to be taken away too. My complete plan below:

    The Solution

First of all, we have to understand that we are going broke. My solution: we got to recall all our military from all foreign lands (and I mean all) and cut it by a third to a half and the remaining troops main mission should be guarding the borders as they are Constitutionally demanded too. Now that would save a heck of a lot of money. Let the rest of the world take care of their own business; we can no longer be the police force of the world. Domestically, I would eliminate the Income tax and IRS and go to a National Sales Tax model. Less entities to collect from so that will further reduce the need for government workers saving more money. Also, before we even had income tax, we got most of our money from tariffs and other fees. Repeal NAFTA/GATT and bring the tariffs back. Short term, things will cost more. Long term, the jobs will return (they have too if companies want to sell their goods to us at a reasonable cost to them). NAFTA/GATT just gave them incentives to leave. That’s my take; want to hear yours. :)

Sun Tsu (Art of War) said war should be hated/despised. If you, however, had no choice but war, then you win. Win means you destroy your enemy. I mean utterly destroy them (i.e., they no longer exist). Going to war does not mean regime change. It does not mean re-building the enemies infrastructure either. That is why our policy should be thus. If the world fears us, so be it, but we first, should not be in every freaking country on God’s green Earth. We should only defend our borders and tell the rest of the world that if you even sneeze bad our way, you will no longer exist. I’m also not saying we should ban trade. We should just add tariffs to equalize our way of life with those who want to trade with us. It will give needed revenue to the government too (tariffs). Before the turn of the 20th Century, the government got most of their revenue from tariffs and other fees and not the Income tax. Now we are in a predicament that I do not see a real solution put on the table yet. We got to get our debt under control folks. You can’t sustain $14.5T (and if they pass this one $16.6T) debt because that can never be paid off. Not even sure what I outlined will work, but at least I believe it has a chance. I would like to say more, but running out of words so I’m ended this one now. :)

Cutting the military would not be as painful as one might think, if it is done sensibly. As was the case after Vietnam the services are very top heavy. That’s where much of the fat is and a healthy cut there would also cut the makework projects initiated to provide “meaningful” jobs. Getting lean and mean might actually be a plus.

I like where you are going and as a member of the military I whole heartedly agree. If you want to cut the defense budget bring the military home, the air force alone is being forced to downsize anywhere from 3,000-7,000 airmen alone because of the budget cuts but is being asked to fight two wars and in libya. Now I completely agree there is waste in the DoD and it needs to be dealt with but even still when the military leaders say we can’t cut anymore, they are serious they are now cutting muscle and bone. I personally can find very little “fat” that is left to cut.

@drattastic – I agree we should not be the worlds police, but do consider this, we had no toe holds in Europe when Hitler hit the fan, and we were almost to the point of all of us speaking German. However, the wars need to be stopped only when we are no longer a nation at war. They did attack us first! Iraq a different matter, and we should pull out now. Afgan, stay there a bit longer and crush the Taliban, then leave. Then we need to cut entitlement spending – welfare – yes, we are now at all hands on deck. SSN and Mcare – create a real trust fund and invest in munis or tbills safe steady increases over a 45 year working career + 401Ks. Eliminate income tax and do fair tax, which would save money also by eliminating the IRS. Abolish the Fed. I agree with you on NAFTA, etc, totally, with the addition of eliminating Public Unions, I don’t have a problem with Private Unions, although they all tend to price themselves out of the market. Reduce taxes and regulations, then all of this will start to create jobs, then we collect more taxes, and use the surplus to pay down the debt. We need a Bal Budget Amendment at the Federal level and 5 or 6 year non-consective term limits for ever politician!

Agree with both you Omni and Scaredfuzz. Like Rome, we’ve overextended ourselves. If they are indeed cutting the number of military troops, then, we can‘t be sending what’s left to hostile places where there are not enough in numbers to defend the whole either. My brother’s in Iraq (third trip to the middle east; other two were in Afghanistan) and I worry for him. We should completely wash our hands of all this mess and go home. Again, the rest of this planet needs to learn to take care of their own, and we need to learn not to bud in. As a side note, I’m 1000% pro military; trust me. Our troops need a respite and we do not need to go to wars where we are not serious about winning. I should say we should not go to war unless we adhere to what Sun Tzu said thousands of years ago. You despise and hate and do everything in your power to avoid war, but once you go to war, you win. I don’t think with our modern technology that it should take millions of troops to win a war either if you know what I mean. Our troops main job should be to protect the homeland anyway, and we don’t need all the troops we have now to do this. Again, it’s time, through attrition, to reduce the number of troops and have the remaining soldiers guard our borders. I bet you, if you have airforce pilots do flybys between us and Mexico and between us and Canada, we wouldn’t have to put up signs in our own country warning our own citizens to be careful in their own country

Here’s where you are wrong Vixvenom. It’s should never be because of our actions that other cultures/countries be democracies. That should be by their choice and their choice alone. Now, if countries decide to not to be a democracy and also decide to try to take us on, then they will no longer exist. If they leave us and our property alone, I can care less what type of government they have. We can’t force our will on other cultures/countries and expect good outcomes. That’s been our problem since the turn of the 20th Century. People need to decide what is the best form of government that they can live with. Who makes you world dictator to decide otherwise? Who made us the world dictator and police force to decide that you must be a democracy? It’s time to take care of us and let the world take care of their interest. :)

Besides your omission of a few other potus’es and your list of a Prime Minister to boot, Churchill wasn’t even loved by his own people that well, Kennedy made some decisions, and some allege that ended up with his assassination (he did try to rid us of the FED and that’s what some believe cost him his life), Nixon was a crook; no doubt in my mind, and Reagan wasn’t perfect either, but was the best of the bunch that you listed imo. :)

Are you progressive? Please think for a minute.

The USA Federal Government’s job militarily is to Americans. The rest of the World can jump off a cliff. Fact

We need no troops overseas in order to have automobiles. In fact the World wouldn‘t have many things if it weren’t for the USA. Fact.

What good has come from having our military all over the world for Americans? Nothing. Fact

Americans saved Europe and they turn to Socialists.
Americans helped Vietnam and they turned back.
Americans fought Korea and they are still communist in the North.
Americans helped many Middle Eastern countries (Afghanistan against Russians) and they attacked us on 9/11.
Americans helped collapse the Soviet Union and they are turning back Soviet.

Please point to the Democratic Republic of the World like ours that came from our military or at all for that matter. Fact, you can not.

Our Military is the best in the World. The other countries asking our help and for us to babysit them by holding bases and stationing troops there should pay us to do so. Sadly we pay them to be there.

Ask Rome how well it worked out for them over stretching their reach and military.  Those people you wrote weren’t to sharp were they or did they just have an agenda? Let the UN be the global police.

If they won’t listen to our voice at the ballot box then they leave us no option but the last one. And that one won’t be bending over and grabbing the ankles like they expect us to do.

And to you @AREYOUFORREAL, your statement tells me you have had a firm grip on your ankles for a long time already. Some people are willing to be sodomized by the government. Not me.

Your right about that CRUNCH!! thIs country has got 2 come 2gether make a stand and change this country back 2 the way it should run…for starters give back the power 2 states WE THE PEOPLE live in..and then down size the government..just for starters…Then get rid of the pig polotitions that got us into 2 this mess!!! but the government has us devided, and until WE THE PEOPLE. realize this and come 2gether, all WE THE PEOPLE.. can do is sit back at our computors and b!tch and complain, whine and moan (including me) about how bad this country is getting!!!!! The sad things is WE THE PEOPLE arent doing anything but btching and complaing whining and moaning as this great country of ours is slipping through our fingers. I wish sooo bad I was a leader and had a clue on how 2 take our country back, but im not!! tho there has got 2 be someone out there with brains and intelligence enough 2 see what I see is happening 2 this country, and have a clue 2 helping WE THE PEOPLE GET OUR COUNTRY BACK FROM THESE GREASY POLITITIONS!!! Its time WE THE PEOPLE make our stand !!! BUT first we need 2 come 2gether as a nation and for that 2 happen we all need 2 find a common ground…Is that even possible?
God bless America, Isreal and all NON muslim countries!!

You have to realize “We the people” does not apply to only hardline Tea-partiers. It also applies to the other 360 million residents of the US, who are simply relieved that a compromise could be reached and a default could be avoided. Compromise being the key term here — and the entire point of our government structure.

      @BaberahamLincoln

Correct. “We the People” refers to all legal Americans. That doesn’t mean you are right in believing fear tactics. We would not default if we didn’t raise the debt limit. Saying we would is a blatant lie. Could we default, only if the Treasury didn‘t pay it’s debt loan which per the Constitution is liable to be paid first.

Those wanting to continue spending lied and said a default will occur because they don’t want to stop spending on entitlements. In fact, they want to increase entitlements accruing more debt. They also lied about Social Security which is funded by a social security tax collected separately.

Don’t feel relieved because this fixed nothing. If anything it assured we will default in the short future as we added Trillions to the debt that we do not have. Im unsure how your relieved.

The TEA party is right and the Republicans sold them out.

If you feel we can’t demand anything from our Government why do you speak at all?

By practicing in free speech are you not demanding, thru action, your government grant you free speech?

Thinking we aren’t to demand anything from those who work FOR us got us into this mess as We the BOSSES  fell asleep and the SERVANTS ran free.

I’m awake now and waking up everyone I see. Hope you wake up soon and demand your SERVANTS you pay for to act as such.

It’s not that it’s not enough it’s that it’s much too late. If Congress had just raised the debt ceiling last month without manufacturing a crisis, our credit rating would be secure no matter how bad the deficit was. It’s not the debt that’s going to get us downgraded, it’s the fear that Republicans will pull the same crap next time.

Why can’t I just live my life having credit card companies just up and upping my credit limit while I blissfully buy whatever I want and live however I want? Why should I (and the rest of the country) pay for the government’s follies!?

I have an idea, the conservative states secede. Liberals go live in Progressivestan or what ever Marxist, Communist name they might want to give their (country) state. They can then pledge allegiance to that little “clenched fist flag” they all seem to admire. And the states that secede can remain the United States. Problem solved!…………..MSSMUG

What a joke. Republicans are a bunch of sissies.

If you spend more then you make, you will continue to have a deficit. A tax that our children will have to pay. How hard is that to understand…..

This does not fix our problem, only delays it, again.

      Gains from this plan are:
      More debt
      More spending
      Unbalanced budget

Time to stand. Republicans are happily sitting in the passenger seat while progressives drive towards the cliff. Republicans don’t say STOP your gonna kill us, they say slow down a little from 100-95 mph and don’t even address the cliff coming up. NO HONOR! PROGRESSIVE LIGHT!!!

Progressives have eaten both Republicans and Democrats and they showed us just that by avoiding addressing the problem.

      Taxed Enough Already!!!
