President Obama Consoles Victims of Movie Theater Shooting in Aurora, Colorado

(The Blaze/AP) — President Barack Obama sought to provide comfort to hurting and grieving families Sunday night, sweeping into Colorado to privately console relatives of the victims gunned down in a movie theater. The massacre left 12 people dead, dozens injured and a nation in stunned sorrow.

Air Force One touched down at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora late Sunday afternoon for the Obama’s hastily arranged 2 1/2-hour visit.

A short time later, Obama began his visit with the family members at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, which treated 23 of the people injured in the mass shooting; 10 remain there, seven hurt critically. The hospital is a short drive from the site of the shooting.

A single suspect, James Holmes, is being held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder after the shooting rampage, which occurred minutes into a premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises” early Friday in this suburb outside Denver.

Watch Obama’s speech, below:

But Politico reports:

Obama and White House press secretary Jay Carney both made assurances that they would not use Holmes’s name to avoid drawing more attention to the shooter, the brother of aspiring sports reporter Jessica Ghawi said on Twitter. Carney confirmed that he’d agreed not to use the shooter’s name. [Emphasis added]

The shock of the mass shooting brought the presidential campaign to a standstill for the weekend. Obama cut short a political trip to Florida to return to Washington and Romney canceled interviews. Both campaigns pulled ads off the air in Colorado out of respect for the victims.

“This weekend I hope everyone takes some time for prayer and reflection,” Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address, “for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover.”

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Sunday during a briefing on Air Force One that the Obama campaign will keep its television ads off the air in Colorado through the whole week.

The president said he privately told the victims that “all of America and much of the world” is thinking about them.

He then told reporters that he came “not as president but as a father and a husband,“ and that ”we can all understand what it would be to have someone taken from us in this fashion.”

The task of articulating sorrow and loss has become a familiar one for Obama, according to the Associated Press.

In November 2009, he led mourners at a service for victims of the mass shooting at Texas’ Fort Hood after giving a “shout-out” to a member of the crowd.  In January 2011, he spoke at a memorial for the six victims killed in Tucson, Ariz., when a gunman attacked Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as she met with constituents.

The following April, when roughly 300 people were killed in a multistate series of tornadoes, Obama flew to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to commiserate with residents whose homes were in ruins. A month later, Obama went to Joplin, Mo., after a monster twister claimed 161 lives. This year, he came back on the storm’s anniversary to give a commencement speech at Joplin High School.

Americans already have more guns per capita than any nation. Yemen is number 2.

You you think the answer to this is more guns? We have millions of guns, and more gun deaths than anywhere. Only psychos bring guns to a movie theater, and the killer had full body armor on anyways.

Make these extended clips illegal. Make assault rifles illegal. Civilians shouldn’t have military weaponry.

Unless you want to live in a civilian police state, it’s not happening.

We should make assault rifles as hard as possible to obtain.

@JOHNLARSON “You you think the answer to this is more guns? ” In that theater, there were definitely too few guns. Imagine if just 10% of the theater-goers possessed handguns and were competent to use them. In that case Holmes would have been shot down quickly and lives would have been saved.

Passing laws to ban semi-automatic guns and high capacity magazines only affects people who obey the law and won’t be using their guns to kill innocent people. Criminals don‘t care if something is illegal and won’t be stopped by a legislative proclamation.

because making drugs illegal is working so well. if a killer wants to kill he will. if there was no guns that he could get a hold of he was obviously smart enough to rig explosives from chemicals he could get and kill the same if not more. remember the deaths of the federal building of just fertilizer and diesel fuel. should I not be able to by diesel fuel for my truck because i may do something other than pull my trailer or start my bon fire for a family fun weekend?

@JOHNLARSON..the answer is not making assault rifles illegal or banning high capacity magazines. IT is fixing the heart and soul of people like him. Banning weapons is not and never has been the answer. Answer is relatively simple. GET YOUR EYES ON JESUS. How simple is that? You have to change the heart in order to stop this stuff. Since man is not capable of changing evil heart..then the only answer is JESUS..the SON OF GOD..Bible says that when you are saved OLD THINGS PASS AWAY and YOU BECOME A NEW CREATURE.
So unless we get back to the founding fathers and christian principles and beliefs. BANNING GUNS>>KNIVES..MAGAZINES..AND FORKS AND SPOONS HAMMERS….it will not matter…EVIL WILL CONTINUE TO EXISt.

Look, I know where your heart is coming from, but you are wrong. It isn’t the guns that are the problem, but the people holding the guns. The solution is not to say out-law guns, because guns are out there whether we like it or not. The solution is to teach morals to our children. Limit those things in our lives that would desensitize us. Pornography is a big (huge) problem. Stop watching movies that glorify violence, and definitely don’t allow our children to watch those things. Taking guns away from law abiding citizens is a band-aide solution. It doesn’t go to the root of the problem. If everyone would look in to there soul, and say, “Is there something in my life right now that I need to change, and how can I be a better person.” I just want everyone to know that God is watching us, and He is keeping track of the good and bad things we are doing. Only we will be to blame for the ultimate break down in our society. Do you talk to your neighbors? Do you find out who they are? These are the “True” solutions to our gun problems.

What better way to gain control of the oil industry in our country than to stage an event like the BP oil spill. It just struck me odd how he stayed so far away from it and wouldn’t let anyone help. The he seized the moment to stop the drilling. Never let a crises go to waste. It would have been so easy to make happen with a remote controlled underground submarine that would self destruct after the event happened. In my opinion, events like this get way more attention than they deserve. Yes, it is a tragedy when something like this happens but as a killer of people, events like this kill very few. People get picked off by the tens of thousands in cars annually in the US. One big plane crash could kill 20+ times as many people as Holmes did. Street criminals kill thousands of victims every year. All that stuff goes relatively unmentioned in the press.

Now one guy goes nuts with a semi-automatic rifle and the whole planet is riveted. Politicians on both sides of the aisle will alter their rhetoric and will pledge to take action to prevent this from happening again.

Anything they do will be ineffective because of the rarity of this kind of thing. America is a country of over 310 million people and out of that population every couple of years, one guy goes off his rocker and kills several people. Finding this guy before he kills makes finding a needle in a haystack an easy job. What they may do, however, is abrogate the rights of the other 310 million people in the process by trying to disarm the population.

I’m sure that Obama is seeing the possibility here, a window of opportunity just as the UN concludes its gun treaty. What smart people need to do is avoid the heat of the moment and the hype and consider what our real problems are in America.

I’ll give you a major clue; the only ones he thanks up front and at the beginning were the federal, state and local government workers who were involved in the matter. The rest came towards the end, while part of his message is sincere (for once), the rest is pure political. Even in a time of mourning he cannot hold off with the poltic.

You do realize that the killer couldn’t have done this on his own. He needed the roads to get there, someone else had to build the theater, you had to have Govt regulate the movie industry and give permits so they could film Batman. You had to have the unions allow the projectionists do their jobs, and of course, the killer did have to fill out a FBI background check before he could buy those guns. So without Govt help, none of these killings would be possible. And without Govt help, the killings won’t stop, or that’s what they will have us to believe.

Colorado requires a FBI background check on all gun sales. Too bad nut job didn’t have a criminal past, neither did the Gabby Giffords shooter……..but we need laws to keep this from happening again, let us all turn to Sen Feinstein, she has a plan, and it works so well in Calif. Just a non-murder paradise out there.

I feel so much better knowing our President flew all the way out here to make a speech. I went by the Academy today, he still has not blessed the burn area and magically made to trees green. While he is out here, if he really wants to do something for Colorado, I did see some trash on I-25, he could pick it up. That would be helpful.

Call me whatever names you can imagine. This act of personal “consolation” to a group of civilians is beneath the Office of the President of the United States of America. And were this not an election year, Dear Leader would NEVER have lowered himself to this kind of direct contact with the peons. More proof that he is willing to politicize EVERYTHING that he feels he can to his advantage. His re-election, after all, relies almost completely on the votes of those who have been co-opted into one “victim group” or another. This co-opted group is particularly sad.
