President Obama: ‘If You’ve Got a Business — You Didn’t Build That. Somebody Else Made That Happen’

The White House has released the transcript of President Obama’s recent speech in Roanoke, Virginia, and it holds a number of noteworthy statements.
“Channeling Elizabeth Warren,” in the words of Jazz Shaw at Hot Air, Barack Obama said that successful Americans “didn’t get there” on their own.
The official transcript relates:
There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. [Emphasis added]
He continued:
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. [Emphasis added]

Last September, Elizabeth Warren made made news after she said that “there is nobody in this country who got rich on his own — nobody.” Her speech received wide criticism, and now Barack Obama seems to be saying almost exactly the same thing.

I suppose this is the part where you [Barack Obama] remind them that when you jack up their taxes, it’s really just so you can give that money back to all the other people who actually built their business. But seriously, this is straight off the pages of Elizabeth Warren’s mind bending remarks from early this year. Those came crashing down around her ears, even in some Left leaning circles, so it’s a serious puzzler as to why Barack Obama would try to pick up that ball and run with it. Rather revealing, though.

The roads to that business? Paid for by you and me. That business didn’t build the road that allows customers to come buy their products or the road the business uses to ship their products out. And you and I pay to maintain those roads.
Did the company pay for the utilities that support their business – the water, gas and electrical lines that allow them to operate? No, you and I did. Did that business build the airports that allow their products to be shipped overseas? Nope, that would be you and me. Who saves the day when those companies buildings catch fire, or when bad guys try to rob them? The Fire Department and the police, paid for by you and me.
How do these businesses protect their unique ideas with patents? The US government protects patents, paid by, who?, you and me.
Sorry folks. Seems like you don’t want to take credit for all our country does to support capitalism, and instead want to believe that businesses thrive in a vacuum, dependent on no one including you or our country. It seems like you want to believe that Americas have nothing to do with the success of these companies. Through your taxes you have a lot to do with the success of this country. We are all contributing to the success of our countries businesses, believe it or not.

Let me remind you of the utter failure of your administration when they gave millions of dollars, through federal intervention, to Solyndra, who then went bankrupt. True capitalism is incompatible with Keynesian policies. These companies DON’T succeed through some collective effort. Companies succeed when the rule of law, representative Government, Constitutional powers, private property, individual rights, families, and personal responsibility is honored, respected, upheld and encouraged.

If you don’t know, and that is obvious from your statements. I suggest you contact your local utilities and community level of government and simply ask. You will be stunned at what they pay. It wasn’t the local Joe Blow who got stuck with the bill, and it is not figured by making each individual pay the same. Yes, that business did pay for those power lines, gas lines, and pays a lot more for telephone access, and things like online access. Geez, call a patent lawyer and ask how much it is to acquire a single patent too. Do you just make this stuff up at a whim? Any access to government utilities by commercial activities costs the owner(s) phenomenal amounts of cash annually. They pay far more than you or the rest of the general public. Try starting a business sometime.

No sh@! shirlock. This is like saying the sky is blue. But the teacher or parent or STATE does not work 60 hours a week to get the promotion and raise. The individual does that. The roads in your neighborhood did not work and save for years to open up a restaurant. The individual did that. Saying, without roads and infrastructure the business owner could never be successful is like saying, I‘m successful and I couldn’t have done it without air. Which is silly considering we all have the use of air and infrastructure.

Posted on July 15, 2012 at 4:14am5 years ago, our big jobs were 50-80 grand. Today, a big job is somewhere between 6 and 10 grand. The majority of jobs are between $500- and $2000. We make cabinets. Our material cost has increased. The quality of the materials we can buy has decreased, dramatically! Also, this inferior product is infectious. Literally. Very used to getting splinters, nicks and cuts. Today, EVERY SINGLE CUT gets infected. A little splinter spits out puss in less than 24 hours. What the heck is going on? I don’t expect an infection when I tear my knuckle in the shop, but that‘s what I’m getting.

Yep, I instead had great people that I learned about how to get ahead through hard work! I still work at least 12 hours a day six days a week. I live on the 17th hole of a country club and have played 27 hours in the past 18 months! I work and train others, like the people who took time for me….my employees don’t want to live on Obama breast milk!
Yep those good people did give me chance, a job and then taught me life skills why you blowing weed in some park. Get a real job you box of rocks..that’s the American..teach others to be better than you and succeed!

Some get a discount for a short time, then the bill goes up. What they pay out the wazoo for is the access. The power company does not come out and run new lines to meet commercial standards for free, spreading the expenditure to all of their customers as you are trying to make it sound. The business will pay for all of the new lines, poles, transformers, labor, and even fees for the work trucks and heavy equipment on site. You’ve got your head so stuck on the spread the wealth crap that you think business and utilities scam their regular customers. It’s not a communist theory on my part. Like I said, pull your damned head out of your fourth point of contact, pick up your phone tomorrow and contact your local utilities and ask them. I’ve dealt with ours a number of times in the past. You are starting to get like ENCINOM when it comes to making crap up. You are much smarter than that.

Our state charges what is known as an “impact” fee on newly established businesses. The fee is used to offset the impact on traffic, roads, schools and surrounding residences/businesses. It‘s a pretty hefty fee from what I’m told by the locals. BTW arguing with the trolls on this site is futile. Do ever wonder what your life would be like if you were born in the Romney family, a second generation wealthy family, raised with servants, always having nutritious meals served by helpers in white uniforms, attending the best schools, and going to college and even getting an advanced degree or two, getting as much education as you wanted? And, when you went to work, getting a leg up in whatever field you’d like to pursue due to family connections?
And then, consider the opposite scenario. You’re born poor (it could have happened right?), your mother struggling to feed you even enough to keep you’re growth from being stunted. You‘re going to some ghetto school with students and teachers who don’t give a dang about you.
Patty, I imagine you’re doing okay. You probably have a big TV. But who has the better chance to succeed, the Romney childhood Patty, or the ghetto Patty?

The intelligent way to lure business to a particular locale, would be to offer them long term promises of very low tax rates, not a one time perk of running free power or gas lines to the building. Or temporarily low rates as teaser are no good either, as the utilities can and do raise their rates often.
Yes, low tax rates are the answer JZS. This allows them to pay higher salaries which lures higher quality employees. No unions are needed to artificially inflate wages for below-par workers.
They can then produce quality products that are available at competitive prices.
Win win for everyone JZS.
Just compare Detroit, with some of the cities that now create much of what they used to.

What a stupid and erroneous comment. The businessman would have simply found another way. The fact that he utilized the road leading to his store does not mean he owes the builder of the road a measure of his success- he would have found another way, or he would have built his business where a road already existed. It’s called making astute and strategic decisions and he deserve credit for his business savvy. How about the man (or men) who actually built the road? Do they get credit for their accomplishment? Or who do they owe their success to? We could play this game all day dude and in the end it will be GOD ALMIGHTY who deserves the credit for it all, not some stupid bureaucrat in Washington.

When are the women and minorities going to realize they are just as competent as the white man? Instead we have the Elisabeth Warren’s out there saying you are too stupid, too fragile, too lazy to do this on your own so we are going to pay your customer to buy stuff from you or use your service.

By JZS’s definitions of how society should be organized, I suppose that all inventors are supposed to willingly give their patents or copyrights to the poor because the poor were not brilliant enough to invent something…or better yet, just let the state confiscate the intellectual property and give it to the poor. If we were stupid enough to do that, there would be few if any new inventions, songs, software, etc. With all the brilliant minds turned off, there would be no new advancements in medicine and technology. Third world countries constantly steal intellectual property from the USA because we still have some. They have done such a good job of it that they are now taking millions of jobs away from the USA. Or maybe JZS is a Luddite and wants a fantasy Luddite world in which to live. In todays world, a Luddite society would be left in the dust by every other country.
I might also add that surveys show that 1/3 of the population is very jealous of anyone who is perceived (by them) to be smarter or have something better than they have. These are Obama’s core constituents. These are the Unionists and the Luddites. This 1/3 of the population was also the glue that held the former USSR together (for a while). They are core Chavez and Castro supporters. I think Obama has confused that “ you owe someone for your success” business with his disconnect with his entitled base : you know, the 47% of Americans who don’t pay ANY taxes. Yes, Mr. President, those people truly do owe their success ( roads, education, military , etc. ) to the TAXPAYERS who provide them with all of these hook ups to advancement ! If Bob goes to the bar every friday and saturday and to work at the mall all week, Bob Will not be rich.
If Bob develops ideas, follows through with them until they succeed, Bob MAY become rich.
There are no guarantees.
Taking Joe’s wealth and giving it to Bob gives Bob no reason to try. He is dependent on the communist government who stole Joe’s money. That is not FAIR. Joe made the right decsions, invesments and effort. Bob did not.

Unless some armed batalion stands in his way, there is no limit to what the individual and private, free citizen can do in this country. That means, that the lazy man, along with the hard working man, both have the right and opportunity to thrive. Wherefore, the man who uses his time, energy and resources more wisely will, of course, better succeed. That’s American capitalism. Thank God.
As for the internet, once the Government got out of the way, and allowed the public, people, and free market to take control, the internet became a powerful and important tool and innovation, THANKS TO PRIVATE CITIZENS!
The Government didn’t create the internet for commerce, it was the citizens of this nation who demanded that the internet be available for personal and commercial reasons. And it was not “Government reasearch” that developed the internet, it was professors, students and universities who had a real interest in advancing technology and spreading information for the public good, that created the internet as we know it today.

My husband and I worked our azzes off to save enough to try a business. Because it was touch & go for several years, I also had to spend wisely. I’d go out and pick veggies and fruit and can & freeze them to save money. I’d make my own jelly, make my own pickles, spent very little money on anything else. Lots of beans & rice.
Well, we made it and became successful and competitive with others. So, what you are saying is another untruth (which seems to be all you know) because you never did anything in your life on your own except be given opportunities others never get.

Posted on July 14, 2012 at 7:10pmSomeone should someday describe how and why the internet was developed … how much it saved the government for the years and years it was only available for use by the defense department and defense contractors/universities. How it more than recupped the “investment” long before it was opened for use by businesses and citizens (who funded its development). It was developed using taxpayer money expressly for the purpose of reducing the time/cost of communication/collaboration between organizations doing weapons research & development. NOT out of the goodness of the government as a tool for the citizens.
