President Obama Says Education is ‘Civil Rights Issue of Our Time’ at Al Sharpton‘s Nat’l Convention

Yesterday–or, actually, very, very early this morning–The Blaze noted that President Barack Obama would court black voters cautiously at Rev. Al Sharpton’s national convention in New York City today. And the president seemed to do just that, focusing on education and energy issues during his evening speech.

President Obama told Sharpton’s civil rights group that his administration has more work to do to create opportunities for all Americans and close gaps in education and employment rates between different groups.

The president said Americans of all types are struggling to make good. But he also said the black community faces higher unemployment than other groups. And he said the poorest in society had to sacrifice the most during the recession.

The president made his comments Wednesday before the Rev. Al Sharpton’s civil rights group in New York City, making good on a promise he made as a presidential candidate to return there.

Obama spoke about making education more accessible and affordable, calling it the “civil rights issue of our time.”

Education is another item on Obama’s competitiveness agenda. That issue was to be the focus of a speech he was giving later Wednesday to the Rev. Al Sharpton’s civil rights group in New York City. Obama’s appearance keeps a promise he made to the National Action Network when he spoke there as a presidential candidate in 2007. Obama pledged to return, win or lose.

He returns just two days after launching his re-election bid. He is facing a key constituency that at times has scolded him for not being attentive enough to certain issues, such as double-digit black unemployment, but continues to hold him in high regard.

Obama deflects such criticism by arguing that his polices to expand the economy, create jobs and improve the education system, among other goals, will help the country as a whole, blacks included.

Ninety-five percent of blacks who voted, opted for Obama in 2008. A Gallup poll released last week showed his job approval among blacks holding at 84 percent, about the same as six months earlier.

      I was about to write a response and happened to read yours. I agree completely. Make education more accessible and affordable? What a joke. It is already accessible and free for all of the minorities in this country and even illegal aliens. You do just have to show up and apply yourself. I was a middle class white kid, worked three part time jobs during college and could not even get a student loan. All of the minority kids at the state college I went to were on a free ride. Free room & board, books, tuition and monthly spending money. Most of them flunked out after one semester. The school had to have a certain percentage of minorities because it was a state school. Sharpton and Obama should concentrate on doing what they have to do to get the inner city kids to even graduate high school. Throwing more money at the problem will not fix it. The graduation rate for minorities in the major cities is less than 50%. That is pathetic. If they do manage to get to college and apply themselves they are in for a free ride. How did Obama and Michele get through Harvard and Princeton. They damn sure didn’t pay full freight. Affirmative action at work.

      It’s free, but not even mediocre. Most minority kids get a below average K-12 education because liberal politicians want to keep the populace ignorant and poor, and thus dependant on the govt. elite (which will increasingly become non-white). Obama, for one, shut down the D.C. school voucher program (the House voted to reinstate it last month, but it still has a ways to go), and his party refuses to flush their stinking, cr@ppy public school system down the toilet.

    What he neglects to say while 16% of blacks are unemployed and only 8% of whites, whites make up 60% of the population, that says there are twice as many unemployeed whites. I love how they use statistics to make it seem like blacks are so bad off. Of couse no other race gets near the amount of entitlements, sounds like BS to me.

      No, pal, your statistical logic is faulty. Percentages allow you to compare the two populations, PRECISELY because the population numbers for the two races are not equal. The 8% and 16% figures give you the PROPORTION of unemployed whites in relation to the total white population, and the PROPORTION of unemployed blacks in relation to the total black population, respectively. Regardless of the actual numbers for each population, that stat shows that the proportion (percentage) is twice as high for blacks as whites. Thus, COMPARATIVELY speaking, the ratio of unemployed blacks to unemployed whites is 2 to 1.

      Do the math. According to the 2010 census data (rounded numbers):
      Total Population = ~309M
      All-Black = ~13% = 40M
      All-White = ~65% = 201M
      16% of 40M = 6M
      8% of 201M = 16M
      6/40M (blacks) to 16/201M (whites) = 1206/8040M (blacks) to 640/8040M (whites) = 2 to 1 ratio

      Actually, the above calculation was unnecessary. Even if the black to white population ratio varies, the unemployment ratio (2 to 1) will remain constant, as long as the percentage of unemployed individuals for each race remains constant (16% vs. 8%).

You can not force people to learn and be intelligent when they do not want to, or are incapable of absorbing the knowledge. Increasing education spending has produce very little improvement, while driving property taxes to insane levels. There is no Superman, the time has arrived to face reality. Increase education spending is not the answer.

With dropout rates averaging 50% in places like Chicago, Philly, D.C., N.Y.C. and knowing these places have a higher than average black population, tells me that these children do NOT want to learn, but hang wif der homies on the street corners and hustle drugs.

      Don’t blame the teachers. This problem comes from the home environment. If these kids are learning all they have to do is show up occasionally and they’ll get a degree why in the hell would they actually try to learn anything?

      Education is not a race issue. Every black family, no matter where you live have the right to a good education. It is up to the parents, even if you are a single parent, live in a drug infested neighborhood, gang banging nightly……get your ass out and make it better for your family instead of expecting the government to subsidize you the rest of your life. I came from the wrong side of the tracks and I made a good life for myself without the government assisting me. It is called DETERMINATION. Also Al show us your credentials as to being an ordained minister. You certainly didn’t get it from any seminary I am familiar with.

      Being a federal contractor, it makes me ill, seeing blacks get hired, working 6 months and getting magic masters degrees, working another 6 months, and all of a sudden, they are Dr such and such, and being sent to leadership training.       The future of a country depends in part on education. The US will only be competitive down the road if all American children have access to a solid education, and only if we have teachers who are smart enough and motivated enough not only to give their best to all of their student, but also to cultivate those who show promise. Exceptional people come from every part of the country, every economic background (Obama and Oprah for example), every ethnicity.

      The Republican Party is currently demonizing teachers, among others, because some have unions. Yeah, teachers are the bad guys. That‘s doesn’t fly with Americans. Check the news tomorrow about Wisconsin if you want to know how Americans are reacting to the Republican assault on the working person.

      This is a president that said he would try to unite us……I’m still waiting. By referring to the civil rights movement whenever he gets a chance, he is just stirring up animosity on both sides. He wants to keep a rift between races because it adds to the general unrest in the country. Turning Americans against Americans almost dissolved the Union during the Civil War, and that might just be a part of the progressive playbook.

      There are poor school districts in this nation that have school voucher programs that allows inner-city minorities to attend better schools. The stats are all there and they all favor School Vouchers are good for minorities and poor kids, so why the hell is the Black leadership in this country against them??? Something really smells bad about this one, but I don’t know enough about the subject to point to the one big reason…. my guess is politics.

      People, don’t put your faith in Donald Trump! There is something wrong with his picture!

      Folks! Please read the U.S. Constitution. There is much more to Obama’s illegality than his place of birth and the damn birth certificate. Just being born in the United States alone does not qualify a person to be eligible as a candidate for the Office of the President!

      Article 1 Section 2 Clause 2 says….No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen. Then Article 1 Section 3 Clause 3 says….No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen.
      Have you gotten that? To be a member of the House or Senate a person must be a citizen!
      But go to the part about the president… The Founding Fathers changed something. Article 2 Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution says….No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.
      Did you see that? Two separate and distinct classes of citizenship had been created by the Founding fathers!

      So shouldn’t the question be….What is the difference between a citizen and a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN as intended by America’s Founding Fathers? Why is it that it seems the Donald Trump’s and Bill O’Reilly’s of America just can’t ask this question? Why is it that they are obsessed with Obama’s place of birth or birth certificate when there is great potential that Obama’s place of birth and his birth certificate are irrelevant?

      Has anyone ever heard the Bill O’Reilly’s of America, even discuss the U.S. Constitution’s NATURAL BORN CITIZEN clause? Donald Trump, has he talked about NATURAL BORN CITIZEN? Have any of them ever explained what the Founding fathers meant by NATURAL BORN CITIZEN? I don’t think so. But I distinctly recall the Bill O’Reilly’s of America calling people “BIRTHERS” just for questioning Obama’s legality! Isn’t that strange? These highly intelligent television people who have research staff that work for them never mention NATURAL BORN CITIZEN but will freely call people “BIRTHERS” for being Constitutionally minded citizens who ask about Obama’s eligibility to be a U.S. President. Now, why is that?

      Folks! Here’s the problem that people like myself have. We read the U.S. Constitution. We also read the NATURAL BORN CITIZEN clause. We never hear about NATURAL BORN CITIZEN on Fox News or MSNBC, so therefore we ask questions! WE GET CALLED BIRTHERS IN RETURN!

      But we didn’t just read the U.S. Constitution. We began to Google NATURAL BORN CITIZEN and learned some very interesting things that don’t get talked about here in America by any of our elected servants and protectors of the U.S. Constitution nor the Bill O’Reilly’s of America.

      People! Google the 1874 U.S. Supreme Court case of Minor. V. Happersett. In that case, the seventh United States Supreme Court Chief Justice MORRISON R. WAITE provides the Founding Fathers of America definition of NATURAL BORN CITIZEN. NATURAL BORN CITIZEN is defined as being born to a mother and father whom are both U.S. citizens at the time of birth. Now why is this not news worthy? If some idiot goes swimming in the ocean and a shark takes a chunk out of their butt….that becomes national news. But have a legitimate discrepancy about the legality of a possible usurper living in America’s White House….SILENCE! NOW WHY IS THAT?

      Some of the most successful, wealthy, influential people of our time are dropouts.

      And obviously Obama’s “top notch” education has not made him a humanist, just a plastic self-serving politician. My invaluable education about socialism comes from living in a “modern” socialist country for many years. The government purports to provide security on such “civil rights” issues, all the while engendering an insidious and profound sense of dependence and insecurity.
      As self-reliance goes down the tubes, so does human potential.

      All blacks should be ashamed and angery for the way the sharptons, jacksons and obammas have STOLEN KIng legacy and how they have MISUSED what King stood for. If I were a King family memeber I would sue them all for defamation of Character. King preached judge by the content of their sharacter, how right King was and what it says about some of the black politicians and organizations like the NAACP.       I would like to see ALL children HOME-SCHOOLED until our education system is overhauled. It is clearly a big mess of red tape bureaucracy and selective education, meaning, NO GOD, NO REPUBLIC HISTORY, NO REAL TRUTHS and education selected by atheists. If my kids were young again, I would try to home-school them or place them in a Christian school and pay extra to do it if I could.

      I blame these problems on UNIONS and people who hate God. Luckily, I brought my kids up in the Bible and church, and they are GROUNDED in the word of God, which as parents, we are responsible for. You WILL be asked by God how you brought your children up. Afterall, every child in this world, past and present, IS ON LOAN to us by God. They are HIS. If you are not responsible enough to raise them in righteousness, then you have no business having them and you WILL answer to God for it on Judgment Day. Mark my words, YOU WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE for how you raise your children. So, if you didn’t raise them, according to the Word of God, then you’d better start now. It is never too late until you’re dead.

      The term ‘Civil Rights’ is being flogged at us to justify everything the left wants to gift on their voter base.
      What about ‘Civil Responsibilities’? For example teaching your children that school is for learning and not just for making ‘street connections’. And being successful isn’t just about finding ways to get government checks. I could go on and on but the bottom line is this promotion of entitlements that Obama and his ilk are preaching is to the detriment of the very people they insist they’re trying to help.

      If that’s the case then the public education system is robbing every child of their civil rights. By placing all students in the same classrooms and schools it is violating the civil rights of the intelligent students by requiring them to move at the pace of the lesser intelligent students. It is also destroying the country’s ability to compete by lowering requirements to keep kids from being left behind.
