President of Iran Pushing Government-Approved Clothing for Women

President of Iran Pushing Government Approved Clothing for Women

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran is taking steps to try and ease confusion in the streets of the Islamic republic where women are required to cover their hair and bodies in public. Ahmadinejad is promoting government-approved apparel for women that is “Islamic and beautiful” at the same time.

The Washington Post reports that the move comes as a means to try and settle disputes between conservative Shiite Muslims who advise women to wear chadors, the traditional head-to-toe cloak, and Iran’s rising population of fashion-conscious urbanites who prefer tight-fitting coats and scant head scarves. The Post reports on the reaction from Iranians to the proposed government-sponsored fashion line:

“Hard-liners are not amused. They say that the new designs encourage ‘Western values.’ But at a recent government-sponsored fashion show, young women and their mothers gazed approvingly at the plastic mannequins showcasing the new coats and scarves.”

Iranians in favor of the conservative dress say that the “culture” of covering up protects women and prevents them from becoming sex objects. The Post writes that hard-liners denounce Western advertising as abusing women’s bodies to sell products. The views of these hard-liners have clashed with Iranian young adults who make up nearly 70 percent of Iran’s 72 million population.

President of Iran Pushing Government Approved Clothing for Women

The Post notes that Ahmadinejad’s motives  may be influenced by the upcoming parliamentary elections in March where the president seeks to position himself as a champion of civil rights to lure middle-class voters.

Several Iranian fashion designers who sell dresses from their homes tell the Post that the new government-sponsored fashion line does not protect women or champion civil rights, but limits choice.

“Again we will face a situation in which a small group will decide for all women what is allowed and what not,” a 26-year-old designer Kiana told the Post. Kiana makes manteaus costing up to $300 apiece and did not want to be identified by her full name.

In their 2011 annual report on the country, Amnesty International writes that Iranian authorities maintain severe restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly. The government places sweeping controls on domestic and international media, aimed at reducing Iranians’ contact with the outside world.

I would have 2 classes of clothes:

    1) tight revealing clothes for good looking hot ladies..

    2) loose baggy clothing that covers everything for those who don’t fit into category 1

its seems like in this country those in category 2 dress like those in category 1..TMI…

Good try stormcrow, but you are spouting the same mindless talking points I keep hearing. The food safety and modernization act says NOTHING about what you can and cannot eat or even what you should eat. It was simply an attempt to modernize the food inspection regulations that have not been updated in 30 years. The point is to give us SAFER food, not tell us what to eat. With over 70 million cases of food poisoning every year and approximately 6,000 deaths it seems like a good idea to make our food safer and it was passed with bipartisan support across the board. The hunger free kids act was passed to expand access to school lunch programs for poor families and improve the quality and nutrition of school lunches. Again – wide support. NOTHING about telling us what we can and cannot eat
What sort of evil dictator would try to improve the safety of our food and make healthy food available to poor children. What a monster Obama is. I’m heading out right now to eat contaminated food and feed pixie stix to the kids in the neighborhood just to show I am not a communist like Obama.

Can’t have Colorado canteloupes, only ones from Mexico or Chile. Don’t drink unpasteurized milk. Why 800 people have died in the past 13 years. How many people have died from FDA approved drugs and infection in our hospitals every year? Get in line slave and NEVER question your masters. It is halal. Where are the feminazis? If a Christian country came out with a line of clothes that were sanctioned by the state for women to wear and only wear,….the women libbers would be outraged. Everytime Islam declares some inhuman torture on women…the women libbers say nothing. If Islam declares women to wear a blanket…they say nothing. Granted..these clothes seem better than the usual tent they force them to wear…but the Feminazis would be screaming about ‘rights’ if a Christian nation would come out with a similar line of force-wear. Libs secretly want to be dictated to…

” I think that liberals all should convert to Islam.” This statement requires a comment. Firstly, liberals do not practice “religion”, per se. Liberals worship big government. Therefore, you are suggesting that they “convert” from big government to Islam. If this was in fact possible, it would be the best thing that could happen. I believe that it is the size and scope of the federal government that is destroying our republic.

“Keep it out of America” ? It’s too late for that, HUMBLECITIZEN. Didn’t you see the news about Defense Dept (aka, Obama) agreeing with CAIR that Islamist women serving as U.S. cadets in JRROTC can now wear head coverings in honor of their Islamist beliefs? Next will be those Islamists who are being hired as fed employees and U.S. soldiers — so they can slaughter people like at Ft. Hood in a terrorist action (sorry, bHo says it was only workplace violence). Yet those of us who want to wear a cross, or a U.S. flag, or say a prayer, etc. are refused that privilege. The Defense Dept is also considering clothing requests from soldiers who are transexuals, and homosexual soldiers who want to wear the garb of the opposite sex.

You’ll recall bHo saying in his innaugural speech that the U.S. is NOT a Christian nation. Up until this month, he’s refused to mention the word “God” in speeches and quotes. He refuses to put his hand over his heart during our National Anthem. And he condones his wife’s speeches condemning our history and traditions.

So, exactly why is he now doing photo ops showing him & family walking into a protestant church on Sunday? And making a Christmas speech that mentions Jesus and Christians? Because he wants/needs/demands four more years to thoroughly sink this Republic. He’ll get elected again, then back to the same ole same ole of despoiling our free America and precious Constitution.
