President Singles Out GOP Congresswoman — Tells Students to ‘Google’ Her

While speaking to a crowd of cheering college students at the University of Colorado in Boulder Tuesday, President Obama singled out Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) for recent comments she made about student loans.
“I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that,” Rep. Foxx said in a radio interview.
“We live in an opportunity society and people are forgetting that. I remind folks all the time that the Declaration of Independence says ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ You don’t sit on your butt and have it dumped in your lap,” she added.
Rep. Foxx’s comments offered the president an opportunity to contrast his newfound concern for struggling college students with fiscally minded Republican and Tea Party candidates.
“I want to read a quote. This is from a Republican congresswoman. I didn’t really understand this. I’m quoting her,” the president said.
“She said that she has ‘very little tolerance for people who tell me they graduate with debt…because there’s no reason for that.’ She said, students who rack up student loan debt are just sitting on their butts, having opportunity ‘dumped in your lap.’”
“You guys can Google her or what have you,” President Obama added.
Watch the president go after Rep. Foxx at the 7:40 mark (via 9News.com):
“Think about that. I can tell you, Michelle and I, we didn’t take out loans because we were lazy. You didn‘t take out loans because you’re lazy,” President Obama said. “You did it because the cost of college kept on going up, and you’re trying to graduate.”
He continued, turning his not-a-campaign speech into an all-out critique of his Republican opponents:
And if [Republicans] were serious about making college more affordable, then they wouldn’t be voting to cut financial aid in their – their budget, if you look at their budget, what it means is you’re going to be cutting aid for 10 million college students by an average of more than $1,000. They certainly wouldn’t let student rates double overnight if they really cared about this issue.
They say that, well, we‘ve got to do it because we’ve got to bring down the deficit.
Now, first of all, these guys ran up the deficit. Remember, these are the same folks who voted in favor of two wars without paying for it, and big tax cuts without paying for it. They just voted to keep billions of dollars of taxpayer subsidies to big oil companies who are raking in record profits.
They just voted to let millionaires and billionaires keep paying low tax rates — lower tax rates than middle-class workers. They just voted to give an average tax cut of at least $150,000 to the wealthiest Americans — folks like me who don’t need it, weren’t asking for it.
And the way they pay for it is to cut things like education and job training that give students opportunities to work and succeed.
So they can’t be too serious about deficits.
It should be noted that earlier that day, while not-campaigning in North Carolina, President Obama used the same Congresswoman to make the same point.
“Now, can you imagine saying something like that? Those of you who’ve had to take out student loans, you didn’t do it because you’re lazy,” the president said.
“You didn’t do it lightly. You don’t like debt.”

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:29pmWhy doesn’t somebody – anybody – in the media point out that the incredibly high cost of “higher education” is completely and totally caused BY LIBERALS.
Virtually every single classroom in this country is controlled by the left. Virtually every school administration is operated by the left.
Consequently, every single penny of increased college costs can be righteously laid at the feet of the democrat, liberal, progressive, socialist, Marxist apparatus in this country.
And now President A** H*** wants to shift the cost of college to the tax payer (which he will do either by offering really low loan rates or simply, eventually, offering a free education up front or forgiving all student loans as a means of gathering student votes) which will eventually amount to *another* huge tax increase on the producers in this country to subsidize more generations of zombie socialist students who have no idea they are being brain washed every day they sit in a classroom.
Flush this man and his colleagues into the toilet of history and do it soon.

This is just good political trickery, as it keeps people from talking about his history as president. Getting to talk about a congress woman, is keeping us from talking about him. Oh, by the way, If you see her whole statement (so don’t watch MSNBC if you want to see the statement in context) you‘ll see that her point was that these people shouldn’t come out of college and expect the tax payer to pay off the debt they created for themselves.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:44pmWho knows! How come nobody points out how upside-down Americans are? It’s supposed to be a nation whose government protects Liberty, so all people have a chance to pursue opportunity by their own lawful means. In that it is exactly the truth that all people are not created equal because they are born of the fruit they have earned, and Liberty gives them the opportunity to increase that fruit if and when they are born again – “Lest you be born again you will not acquire the Kingdom ‘of’ Heaven.” In the Bible ‘Women’ are not the same as ‘Woman’, moreover women are taken from men, and woman is taken from man. You all wreck your own nation because of your own ignorant arrogance, believing yourselves as gods and the deciders of who is equal. People are not born equal because they didn’t labor beforehand to gather the same fruit as another, and yet they want to steal God given fruit from another. Surely the world will collapse.

I‘m sure you aren’t aware – or you wouldn’t have tried to make such a point.
If a someone takes out a ‘student loan’ – no matter for how much, they go thru life being required to pay off that student loan. It doesn’t matter if that person files for bankruptcy (even more than once during their life) they can NEVER rid themselves of that student loan. And if that person dies still – owing on that student loan – then the ‘estate’ is STILL responsible for paying off that loan.

Wrong, Federal loan backing enables redistribution of loan risk to the public, moral hazard for lenders and a bottomless pit of funding.
This has caused the massive increases in education costs. The intervention of Federal subsidization increases costs as there is no competitive mechanism for schools to be competitive and efficient. They have an endless supply of federal backed loans so they crank up the fees.
When the student loan bubble bursts, who will be left holding the bag?? The taxpayers..
This is exactly what will happen to health care.. cost will skyrocket, Then the services will be rationed.

Eventually the college tuition well experience the same problem as housing. In college’s situation they will have huge contracts to professors and no students. Then what happens to the colleges? States will have to kick in more funding in a era of state budget problems.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 10:22pmYou can see the schizophrenia in the right wing here pretty clearly. On the one hand there is an occasional nod to the idea that to maintain American exceptionalism, we, as a country have to have a new crop of highly educated people every year to maintain our technological advantage over the rest of the world.
But on the other hand, education is demonized. Universities are liberal bastions that do nothing but politically indoctrinate students, professors are all liberal, elitists and so whatever they teach is wrong, public school teachers are paid too much, teach science rather than the Bible, and have no right to organize and speak as group (unlike, say, the Tea Party).
Do you ever wonder why you think that most teachers and professors are liberal? Is that really true? If it is, could it be that an education exposes people to different ideas? Is it because people who pursue an advanced education are simply smarter? Or is it a communist plot?
In any case, here’s a quote from wiki on anti-intellectualism: Dictators, and their dictatorship supporters, use anti-intellectualism to gain popular support, by accusing intellectuals of being a socially detached, politically-dangerous class who question the extant social norms, who dissent from established opinion, and who reject nationalism, hence they are unpatriotic, and thus subversive of the nation. Violent anti-intellectualism is common to the rise and rule of authoritarian political movements.

it is because the liberal mindset is automatically drawn to professions that require no physical effort, just a little bit more mental effort, and no moral compass. Billy Ayers would be just one example.

If you go into that kind of debt and don’t think about actually paying it off and then complain about the debt YOU signed for, you are a highly irresponsible individual and are in need of the life lesson you get. And if you go 50,000 in debt for a degree in Turkish Art and complain you can’t find a job and you want me to subsidize your education in stupidity, you deserve your new career at Mcfastfood. We have an entire generation coming along that knows nothing about responsibility. Many get high valued education without going deeply in debt. It is possible and freaking prudent. I feel bad for doctors that come out of med school with 250,000 in debt, but not that bad. They must be held responsible for their on actions. If first year employment in your chosen field pays 25,000 which is high average and you go more than 50,000 in debt, is this wise? Of course not. You work through college and pay as much as you can as you go and extend the duration of school to prevent choking debt when you get out of school. This should be elementary but clearly it is not.

The reason tuitions are so high is because the government backs all student loans. Since banks and other financial institutions don’t have to worry about being repaid, they will lend out as much money to anybody who wants it(just like they did with mortgages). This creates more demand for space in colleges and universities who then see an opportunity to up their revenues by raising tuitions.
Did anybody ever notice that house prices in the 40′s-70‘s didn’t increase in value 10-20% a year when banks would only lend to the best borrowers? When the government stepped in to backstop all loans with Fannie and Freddie, BANG, house prices soared.

I now have a PhD in engineering. Over the 12 years it took me to finish BS, MS, and PhD, my parents gave me ~$10,000. I went to a local, in-state college to make sure I could afford it, then went to the “better” school for my graduate degrees. I lived below the poverty line and even qualified for government aide, which I did not take (call it “too much pride”).
The point to all this is that college is a choice, and so is taking out student loans. Choices have consequences. If you choose to take out a loan, you are responsible for it. Don’t give anyone that power over you.

We deny students entry because all they ask about is “when will my first student come in and can I get what is left over?” I see students that shouldn’t be students. Another school around my area has a 6% graduation rate, ours is 49%, when I started back in April 2009 it was 74%. Look how may defaulted student loans there are, look at how many fail because they don’t want to try, but they want free money. This is the same thing that is happening to public schools. We dumb down the system for everyone else because these students do not have any moral family values, they have to many people that do not speak English, so all the ones that do enjoy learning can not get ahead or be challenged because of this. My daughter goes to a school that is made up of a diverse group, I had so much trouble this year because of a student that was two years too old for the class and this student would hit, bite, and throw chairs at the teachers and students, she pushed my daughter down and spit on her on her. The school didn’t send any papers home. I didn’t even get a letter saying they had a breakout of lice, my daughter having long hair got it three times. The shampoo is not cheap. Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:27pmIt is interesting to note that the baby boomers who attended college in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s in most states paid a very small percentage of the cost of their college education. Let’s take Ohio for instance. During those decades the state of Ohio covered 70% of the cost of instate universities and colleges. So the student and their families only had to cover 30%. Today the state of Ohio pays 17% of the cost of instate universities and colleges.. So for those who have trouble following the math. Our grandparents and parents paid higher taxes so that education would be available to all. A great deal of baby boomers, many of who are in Congress, benefited from that investment in their future. Of course now that they are in line to make the same investment, they cut taxes and dramatically reduce support for education (70 to 17%). And their defense is that they have saved money to put their own kids through college and the hell with the other kids. How many of them would have been able to attend if their grandparents had taken that position. I attribute it to the ME generation, as it is all about them. They believe they are better Americans, harder workers, better Christians, etc. What they are is bad citizens who no longer feel a need to invest in the community at large.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 1:03pmFriends, I just want to apologize for my rhetoric last night on this issue. I do fail to reach my Catholic Principles that are high. Many people are afraid to have high principles because they are afraid of not being able to always achieve them. Hypocrisy always involves a ‘lie’. Human weakness and being on your best behavior, are ‘not’ hypocrisy. Pretending to be something that someone is ‘not‘, ‘is’ a lie, and is hypocritical. I will continue to try. I will fail, and try again, and again. That aside, know these people like ‘jrook’ for what they are. Lost. Let’s not lose our country of freedom, because of them. Ignoring my rhetoric, my message is clear. Do you want these people running your lives?!

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:23pmI went to college AND PAID FOR IT MYSELF, 1 course at a time, SO ALL OF YOU ARE TOTAL FOOLS. Yes, it took twice as long, but I did it, worked, raised kids and paid my bills. Yes, I had a Husband that helped pay the bills, but it can be done, IF YOU REALLY WANT IT BAD ENOUGH.
I think THAT IS THE ONLY WAY to get an education – NO HANDOUTS, NOT STUDENT LOANS, NO GI BILL, NOTHING. Either pay for it yourself, get a family member to help you or FIND SOMETHING ELSE, like a local tech college who doesn’t charge as much.
These free handouts is what has RUINED THIS COUNTRY. You are all total fools!

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:10pmYeah, you get a job and start paying your loans as you go through college.. it’s what I had to do, and I still have debt and make my payments on time – didn’t expect someone to “do it for me”. Guess that’s the difference in thinking, call it logical if you must. Don‘t be a douche and complain when you didn’t do a damn thing through college but drink beer and “study”. Get a job, you jackwagons.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:09pmJust because her name is Foxx. She makes a lot of sense though. Still, the blame should be pointed at the tenured professor bloated colleges and universities that charge such outrageous fees. Not the institutions making the loans.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:07pmI have the GI Bill. And I feel for my peers to my left and right I see struggling to just make ends meet while going to school.
It seems like the GOP only wants the elite of the country to have higher education and a chance at the “social mobility” conservatives are always rambling about.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:13pmI have the same GI Bill and being retired from the Army it is helping my son through college. It is not the Republicans wanting only the elite to attend college. Especially since the elite consider themselves the liberals of the world today. It is the colleges and universities wanting an arm and a leg from every family member for just one child to attend a college. It would make more sense to keep the fees down rather than blame everybody else for the high costs. If you want to blame anybody, take a deep strong look into the institutions of higher learning themselves.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:13pmTry again. It is the LIBERAL elite of both parties that want that. If you are not part of their little clique then you do not get to get ahead. This has nothing to do with democrats or republicans but everything to do with liberals and conservatives. The government should not be giving student loans at all. They are the reason that the costs are going up so much because the schools know that they are going to get the money no matter what they charge.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:19pmHe twisted her “quote” just a bit. Either way, you can’t argue D or R for blame on the education prices. Both have helped and/or sat idley by while the Federal Gov’t pushed their way into education. I have plenty of debt. I still don’t blame it on the rising prices. I knew how much it was prior to signing the contract required of me to borrow said loans (that is the point that Foxx seemed to be getting at). The real gripe is the gov’t involvement and social engineering that says the only way to succeed or have value in life is going to college…and…the only way to run an education system properly is to layer in gov’t requirements to make things “fair” and “efficient.” Lots of people shouldn’t be going to college, lots shouldn’t be required to finish 12 years of education. Some people aren’t geared for it…just like I’m not geared for working on the engine of my vehicle or various other skills needed in an economy. Education is important. Leaving it up to the individual to determine the level and direction of his/her education is paramount.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:35pmThe reason education is so expensive is due to Government intervention. When the Government subsidizes the market gets distorted, if education were a “free market” then competition would drive down the cost. The education system operates in a false economy of Government subsidies or better said the redistribution of wealth from society to the education system, there is no accountability and the costs rise dramatically. Gov causes the high price then pretends to have the solution.. more subsidies. more debt, more control.
