Press Confronts White House on ‘Romney Killed My Wife’ Ad — Response: Sorry, Our Hands Are Tied

The pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA on Tuesday released an ad accusing Mitt Romney of being somehow responsible for the death of the wife of Joe Soptic, a former GST Steel employee and a known Obama campaign operative.
But despite the fact that the ad has been proven 100 percent false, and therefore reflects poorly on the administration, the White House maintains that it can’t say or do anything about it because it was produced by a third party group.
“You keep trying to refer to it as an outside group,” NBC’s Chuck Todd said to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney during Friday’s press briefing.
“This is a group that David Plouffe has raised money for. David Plouffe works in the West Wing. This is a group that the campaign has asked to come to the cabinet to help raise money. This isn’t just some third party group. So, you do have standing. How do you not have standing when you speak out about this?” he asked.
“Again, as a matter of, as I understand it, the law, [the White House] has no control over what third party groups –” Carney began to say before being cut off.
“The law says you can’t condemn an ad?” Todd asked.
Carney reiterated that the White House has no opinion whatsoever on the ad.
Here‘s Fox’s Ed Henry questioning Carney over the same point [via Mediaite]
Todd wasn’t satisfied with Carney’s response.
“You made this general request…to the Romney campaign: Mitt Romney ought to distance himself, whether it’s a Donald Trump thing, whether it was Mr. Ricketts,” Todd said.*
“So you’ve actually made those same requests, so, if you believe that they either stand by it or don’t stand by it, how are you not held to the same standard?” he persisted.
Carney argued that the ad is a campaign issue. Todd replied by pointing out that the White House has gone after “false” advertising before and that the decision to have no opinion on an ad tying Mitt Romney to someone’s death is kinda’-sorta’ arbitrary.
“Again, millions of dollars spent by the other campaign in states across the country, blatantly misrepresenting the president’s policy on an issue –” Carney started to say before he was caught for his obvious mistake.
“So on that, you will speak for the campaign?”
“It’s on policy!” Carney responded. “I know what the policy is and I take issue, as someone who speaks for and defends and explains the president’s policies, uh, with that representation of it.”
“What I’m not going to do is become a judge and assessor of every third party ad that’s out there. Again, just the other day, there was an ad — again, broadcast with real money, paid for by some group out there, conservative group — questioning the president’s citizenship,” he added.

Unsurprisingly, as noted before on TheBlaze, the reaction to the ad has been a mixture of shock and disgust. And because the common reaction has been a big, hearty “Are you Serious?”, Team Obama has tried to step away from the ad.
Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter claimed that neither she nor the Obama campaign knew anything about the details of Soptic’s family situation. Meanwhile, campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters on Wednesday “we don’t have any knowledge of the story of the family.” Even Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs pleaded ignorance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” when the panel asked him what he thought of the fraudulent ad.
But there are two major problems with Cutter’s and Psaki’s claim. First, Soptic is no stranger to Team Obama. You see, the laid off steelworker is a veteran of anti-Romney ads and he spoke personally with Cutter and others during a conference call in May:
Second, as TheBlaze’s Chris Field notes, the Obama campaign had already implicated Romney in the death of Soptic’s wife, meaning Cutter and Psaki lied when they said they were unfamiliar with his story [via BuzzFeed]:
That slide clearly blames Romney for the death of Soptic’s wife despite the fact that Romney left Bain in 1999 (do we really need to keep going over this?), GST Steel was shuttered in 2001, Soptic’s wife passed away in 2006, and the fact that Soptic’s wife had insurance through her own employer. Oh, yeah, Bain’s managing director at the time of GST’s bankruptcy was none other than top Obama bundler Jonathan Lavine.
Of course, because this is the age of the internet, it wasn’t long before all these facts came to light and the Obama campaign was forced to fess up.
“No one is denying that he was in … one of our campaign ads,” Psaki eventually admitted, adding that Soptic was indeed involved in a campaign conference call in May. However, she maintains that the outrage over the “Romney Kills” ad is unfair because the Romney campaign lied in its “Obama Gutted Welfare Reform” ad.
Pretty much the same thing, right?
Let’s do a quick recap: Team Obama has been caught in, to put it bluntly, a big lie; it has been forced to admit that it knows who Joe Soptic is; and it has been discovered that this isn’t the first time they’ve implicated Romney in the death of Soptic’s wife. Understandably, this has led many to believe that the Obama campaign illegally coordinated with a Super PAC on the “Romney Kills” ad.
Oh, one more thing: You know TheBlaze reported in May Soptic was offered a buyout before the company went belly up, right?
Anyway, since the release of the fraudulent ad, Romney’s people have returned fire:
Bonus: When asked by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer about the video, Priorities USA founder and former White House spokesman Bill Burton claimed they never meant to imply Romney was somehow responsible for the death of Soptic’s wife.

This is the age of Karl Rove, Citizens United and in the words of Romney, “Corporations are people my friend.” America has fought for years to limit the amount of money that those with lots of disposable income can spend. Citizens United threw that out the window. Now any billionaire can put whomever he want in office, by providing him with unlimited funds, at least at the local and probably state level.
Probably 90% of Romney’s PACs come from a hundred people or less. Given that Romney is spineless and has taken polar opposite sides on every single substantive issue, who do ya think his policies will support? The average Joe like you and me, or the 100 guys who have given him a half billion bucks?

Again, “Corporations are people my friend.” You don’t think that Corporations by law are considered people” I recall that it sounded odd to me at first too when I took Business, and Business Law courses back in the early ’70s. The phrase is actually Corporate Personhood, and a name granted by the Supreme Court in the 1819 decision of Dartmouth College v Woodward as the court has recognized corporations as having the same rights as natural persons to contract and to enforce contracts. Although not fully written into the Constitution as mentioned above, originally it was the SCOTUS then eventually the Congress wrote this into laws. It allows people to sue Corporations, and even for Corporations to sue people and even other Corporations. This also allows corporations to be taxed the same as a person’s annual income tax when the 16th Amendment was ratified. Corporations are taxed as people, and have the rights of people.
I suppose you would have us believe that 0bama attends all of those $38,000 a plate fund raisers to raise money from the every day Joes like you and me? BTW, who let GE slide without paying federal income taxes at all? Was that all Hoax and Chains?

I’m starting to see more and more of this and want to know if this anything more than a rumor spread on the internet forums? I mean is there ANY evidence that Obama supporters are posing as RP supporters? If so please link. I mean anyone who gets their feeds from the Ron Paul groups know that RP asked his supporters to vote according to past traditions and that Romney will be the nominee. He‘s only in this so his delegates might influence the GOP’s platform towards individual liberty and sound money. He‘s always asked his people to be courteous and respectful of others and we’re still being silenced, and discredited. Still you all can’t be happy by the tactics used and what you ended up with. I‘m on here trying to make sure we don’t make the same mistake in 2016 because I do dislike Romney and believe we‘re being played the fool by the establishment that really doesn’t want anything to change. So what gives? Why are you all trying to discredit us as liberals in disguise? I think anyone that does this isn’t for the Constitution, individual liberty and our sovereignty. If anything is seems the folks spreading this are the establishment plants, not us.

You’re absolutely right, Romney is the lesser of two evils and as much as Gary Johnson would be a great choice he is not great to say the least. Gary Johnson has no chance in heck of winning and anyone and everyone should know that to be the case, he has not advertised his message, he has not gotten out to talk, he won’t even be in the debates so to cast a vote for Gary Johnson would be throwing the vote away for a second term of Obama, there is no getting around that.
As for Romney and Paul, the Libertarian party supported Paul from the beginning and so did I along with them. Romney was my second to last pick for presidential candidate but he is indeed the lesser of two evils as Obama is the worst of the worst. Would Gary Johnson be a better pick out of the other two? Yes, but can he win? No! However, I think Paul would’ve been the best choice.
As for the last remark you made as to Liberals coming in under the guise of Libertarians it is indeed TRUE, and there is proof right here on the Blaze. There is a story about Dennis Kucinich where he went against Obama over the war’s in the middle east, a certain individual who criticized conservatives and libertarian beliefs on the Blaze many times in the name of “libertariansunite” came on in support of how much he liked Kucinich. Now any TRUE Libertarian would despise Kucinich for all the government regulations and size increases he voted for, including his vote for Obama care. That is my proof for you.

I don’t like the current administration. I don’t like the offered alternative of Mitt Romney — Bain Capital with its derivatives etc connections; his links to the corrupted Utah Olympics (should have shut it down rather than salvaging the mess), etc.

Obama has spent over $100 million in battle ground states to smear Romney and it hasn’t worked.
Just today, Obama’s job approvals slipped to 43% on Gallup. Romney is consistently ahead on Rasmussen. Meanwhile, Romney keeps outraising Obama each month.

You think I must be some university professor or something, some person more educated than you I guess, but some person who you have to imagine is black or Mexican or someone else who you can call “boy” to make yourself feel really good, despite your educational and intellectual shortcomings, or because of them.
Sorry, I’m not Universtiy professor in your link. But that doesn‘t mean you shouldn’t feel good for calling me “boy” because I might be a black or some other minority, or someone else you feel superior to. I might be.

Yes, they do, and Bob Dole released the most to date. McCain only released two years, and I know your favorite John Kerry released 20. Yeah he did release 20 spaced out over his 5 Senate campaigns, and his presidential campaign. Not quite two years worth per campaign is it? For his presidential campaign he only released two years. May as well give him a pass though since he is one of only 17 currently in Congress that released tax returns, but his alone, not his wife’s. McCain’s wife released hers for his campaign, as well the McCain Family Foundation.

And, what about those college transcripts that will probably show that he accepted a foreign student scholarship, or scholarships. Oh yeah, what about those pesky passports too? Why was 0bama given the choice of surrendering his law license which he quickly did? Talk about somebody’s dirty past. No, I don‘t yet know what is in Romney’s other tax returns, and yes, I would like to know. Maybe he’s holding out to ask 0bama to actually prove he actually is. Where Obama’s hand ARE tied is in asking (or demanding) that the PAC take the ad off the air. He CAN’T do that according to the law. But, the law does NOT say he can’t express an opinion on a super PAC ad, either positively or negatively.
Obama ran in 2008 on the so-called “promise” of changing Washington for the better. Remember the “most transparent administration in history” promise? Remember “Hope and Change?” Well, instead of “transparency” we get Fast and Furious and other cover-ups perpetrated by the administration! Instead of “Hope and Change” we get runaway spending and massive debt but STILL a stagnant economy and high unemployment!
Now, in a DESPERATE bid to stay in power, Obama hides behind “our hands are tied” while, at the same time, he and his super PAC conduct the most despicable, dishonest, and cowardly campaign ever seen by the American people!
Is THIS the kind of person people want in the White House? Has morality and honesty in American politics vanished completely?!?!
God help America if Obama wins re-election! If that happens, it means that Americans condone this kind of despicable, immoral conduct! Any semblance of honour and integrity in government will be long gone!

And most of them JUST DON’T SEEM TO CARE!!! As long as their entitlement checks keep coming, their benefits keep going, etc., they seem more than willing to keep whoever in the Oval Office keeps the money rolling. It’s going to take each and every person who believes in what the Founding Fathers believed to get out there and try to educate the teeming masses on what America is really all about.
