‘Pretty Ambitious’: Beck’s GBTV Plan Intrigues Media

When Glenn Beck announced his new endeavor to bring a TV station to the internet, exclusively, people took notice. And while there were those who asked, How could that work?, there were others who realized it is truly a groundbreaking endeavor. In fact, some in the media are intrigued and excited about what it could mean for the future of television (or, webevision?)
Regarding the launch of the network, which took place via an hour-long web show Wednesday, Business Insider called it “impressive” while adding:
What‘s clear is that Beck’s team has no real interest in producing a web show; they fully intend to turn-out a high quality television show that just happens to air on the web.
It’s a strategy that has a resulted in a lot of speculation and skepticism from media types (and presumably the attention of a LOT of media execs) but which in the viewing feels like far less of a stretch — watching TV online isn’t exactly a new thing, in fact it’d be interesting to know how many people actually see the Daily Show during its airtime vs. next day clip viewing.
The site Gigaom.com says one‘s politics shouldn’t factor into what he thinks of the idea:
Think what you will about Glenn Beck’s politics, you have to admit his newest venture is pretty ambitious: Beck is launching a subscription-only online TV network this week. GBTV, as the venture is called, promises “a mix of news, information and entertainment programs,” but its biggest attraction is undoubtedly a daily two-hour talk show hosted by Beck himself.
[...]
Subscribers will be able to watch the show online starting Sept. 12, and also access it through an iOS app as well as a Roku channel. The latter could be a boon for Roku, introducing the device to new audiences and helping it on its way to reach its next milestone of three million sold devices by the end of this year.
In one article, Mediate says the plan is “revolutionary:”
If Beck really is making a TV network that is separate from the cable company system (and, seriously, the difference between computer and television is going to be nothing more than screen-size soon), then this new venture may actually be as forward-thinking and revolutionary as all the marketing talk makes it sound.
Later, in a follow-up piece, the author writes:
…I’ve believed for a while that the idea of people subscribing to the content they like directly from the providers and not having to pay for packages from the likes of cable company middle men is the direction we’re heading in so, I stand by those proclamations.
Those who want to see what all the excitement is about can watch the hour-long launch below:

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 12:16pmHe can now say whatever he wants. No network or advertisers to protect. If you buy a Roku you’ll be able to watch through your TV like you always did and use a remote to pause etc. The most expensive ROKU model is $100 with no monthly fees. Google it, if watching his show on a computer screen doesn’t appeal to you anymore than it did me.

I would hold off, unless your buying a roku for other reasons then gbtv, as you might already have a device that will work, or find something that better fits your needs..
Personally I am hoping to extend the MLB.TV scripts to work with GBTV on open source platforms like mythtv and xmbc which I use

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 12:05pmHonestly I cannot see this as revolutionary and or original. The idea itself is nothing new, nothing impressive. Revolutionary can only apply to how Beck and his team execute the plan and make it succeed. If the goal is to reach more people, it is hurt by the subscription business model, at least initially. Its all fairly risky and has a high chance of failure.

Unless your a communist and are going to force people to produce tv for free
Personally I am calling this week and canceling my Cable TV and moving to all Online Alternatives of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and now GBTV

Wow please tell me your not that dense
If you have Cable, then your pay for it via subcriber fees,
if you are justing OTA tv, then I feel sorry for you anyway…
As so subscriber website, that depends on the type of sites, there are HUGE numbers of web sites that charge a fee to use them, it is the largest growing segment, it is call SaaS or “Software as a Service” think google docs, but unlike google docs there are alot of specially applications that are now Online, Everything from Quickbooks to task managers, These are Subscription Based Sites.
News and Information Sites has failed paywalls because there is too much nonpaywalls competition in the marketplace, these are ad supported sites where you as the viewer generate money for the site by looking at or clicking on ads. So you are indirectly paying for it.
If there were no ad revenue, and no subscriber revenue THERE WOULD BE NO SITE.
There is no free services, someone has to pay for it

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 1:19pmI am over 65 and still in shock over having to pay for TV (the digital switch and lack of reception) – The good part about FiOS was Fox and then Glenn. If I could pick only the few channels and preferably the programs we watch – a local news, whichever channel has the rights to the Phillies, weather, Jeopardy, Fox News, maybe a History Channel, the Pennsylvania channel (the Farm Show in January) and Glenn, I’d do it but it would have to cost less then now, total (you know, the value of ones retirement funds are dropping). The $60 for the box isn’t a breaker, but I’d have to think long and had about another monthly bill. If I could buy GBTV, Fox News, a weather channel and the Phillies for my wife, I think I might think about a big strong antenna and then drop FiOS TV – if each channel is $5 that would be $20 – A sight better then $60 – I’d still rather buy a program at a time and choose from anything ROKU has ROKU might do better selling programs rather then channels

They simply IGNORE everything that does not fit their specific liberal bias, and a great many things happening that SHOULD be reported to allow people to make sense of things never are.
They shape who gets nominated for President the same way. Many viable candidates have been ignored to death by the MSM, thereby allowing the Dumbocrats to choose the other party’s nominee–that is why we get tired old reruns like John McCain and Mitt Romney instead of “real” candidates. I‘ve been saying for YEARS that whoever is pulling the strings behind the scenes will prevent ANYBODY from getting nominated that they don’t already own.
That is the problem with letting big-bucks PACs and such decide who gets nominated by where they put their money. And when the MSM start trying to ignore our candidates to death, we need to support them anyhow. Just because they are not on MSM does NOT mean they are not viable candidates. Glenn wears many different military pins. You can do a search and see that many branches of the armed forces have variations of the skull and crossbones. When he was in DC 2009, he stopped by a vendor and bought every varation of pins/badges that a vet was selling.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 12:50pmAWESOME, Glenn! You are a revolutionary patriot. I pray you survive the Obama onslaught.
On a side note, tell Betsy to redirect her efforts. The only two changes I’ve seen on The Blaze since she came on board are censorship and character limit — the typical lib destructive policy. So you may want to ignore her liberalism, but those of us who love this blog have to put up with it. TRUTH doesn’t live in any liberal. Uh-uh.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 12:58pmInteresting… As it is fully funded by the people that want the content, it is effectively boycott proof! (No advertisers) Kind of reminds me of Howard Stern going to SIRUS (Although that would be the limit to the comparison.) I think he is about to revolutionize the way we watch TV. (Or, as the administration would say, “fundamentally change”. There is some special irony there!

God gave his only begotten son to suffer and die on the cross for the sins of mankind…when you KNOW what the Bible teaches and you are AFRAID to tell the TRUTH about it…I liken that fear to that of the apostle Peter when he denied Jesus three times! HOWEVER, Peter was afraid of being put to death…not just afraid of being politically correct! God is pleased with you Herman Cain!

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 1:45pmHe’s stepping out of the box before all the newspapers, and cable media are. Smart move. Oprah should have been so lucky to have this sort of vision before launching her “O” channel. I’m all for paying to view JUST what I want to, vs badly bundled cable packages when I really only watch a dozen or so of the channels. Wouldn’t it be nice to just pay by the station? MSM will be on the top shelf collecting dust of they don’t get on board! WTG Glenn ;) I let me Insider Extreme membership lapse a month or so ago, but I’m signing back up for sure now. Posted on June 10, 2011 at 3:32pmCount me in as a future GBTV subscriber.
Glenn had my attention even long before The Blaze.
I listen to his radio program every morning, during ‘drive time’. I dont have cable or satellite at home because I dont like getting bombarded with garbage that I DONT want in my head. And I use the internet exclusively for data/info gathering because I am in the driver’s seat and can filter the garbage, assimilate info correctly, and come up with a more informed view of current happenings.
Given the widespread revelation of ‘Liberal Media Bias’ and the ‘LameStream Media’ over the past 24 months, America will DEMAND much more of their media to come from “respectable” sources like those that are provided by GBC, Inc.
:-)
Get ready for multiple attacks on conservative media websites by our ‘glorious U.N. world government’ in the form of “treaties” and under the guise of ‘protecting the people’. They know that they are loosing ground and will never regain the position that they worked 30 years to establish. They will fight to the death on gaining control, at this point, because it has now become a matter of ‘Do or Die’ for them.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 4:44pmThe brilliance and ambition of Glenn never ceases to amaze me. He will have my $50 shortly.
And folks, in case some of you aren’t technologically advanced, there is a very simple way to watch what yo are watching on your laptop on your TV. I have my MacBook plugged into my TV using a DVI (the port where you would plug a second monitor into, VGA on PCs) to HDMI (this plugs into your TV) cord and a simple audio cable (red, white and yellow) going from the tv to the earphone jack on my laptop. I also have a wireless keyboard and mouse, so my Macbook stays plugged into my TV 24/7 and sits on my DirecTv box and I use my wireless keyboard and mouse from my bed or desk or wherever in the room.
This will make watching Glenn for two hours every day just like watching him on Fox, the only difference, I get him for two whole hours instead of one…along with Beck university! Lovin this concept Mercury Arts….BRILLIANT!

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 7:05pmMediate says the plan is “revolutionary:”
If Beck really is making a TV network that is separate from the cable company system (and, seriously, the difference between computer and television is going to be nothing more than screen-size soon), then this new venture may actually be as forward-thinking and revolutionary as all the marketing talk makes it sound.
—
what difference in ‘screen size’ is there for tvs and computers? LOL… you can hook your computer to any hdtv right now… 0 difference. tvs have difference screen sizes too.. man that paragraph is like a logic error…
need another example?
i can buy a 24″ hdtv (monitor)
i can buy a 24″ monitor..
what is the difference?!
same size and resolution.
and this is FAR from revolutionary, as people have been watching TV on their computers for years now via slingbox, tversity and other various apps..
that paragraph aside… GBTV is a good idea. ;)

Obummer will just shut him down with some net neutrality thing
You DO realize that net neutrality is what we ALREADY HAVE and that the telecomm industry wants to get rid of it so they can regulate content on the basis of different levels of access to the internet that website owners must PAY if they want people to see their website?
Obama SUPPORTS net neutrality – which protects The Blaze from having to pay extra just to to be visible on the ‘net.

Posted on June 11, 2011 at 9:02pmThis could be a smart strategy but it’s going to fail. I wish Glenn the best of success god knows we need him to succeed but I can’t pay extra money for info or guidence when the info is already in front of me, not to mention that asking for money is dumb when I could just watch Fox News or do my own research. The true answer to all our problems is you finding out the truth about the evils that are going on in this world and making a change for the better whether that’s becoming a better person, a member of Congress, join the military, or become President of the USA. Number 1 can easily be accomplished but keeping that for the rest of your life well that’s a little bit harder. This is America‘s last chance for true freedom or else we’ll be waiting 100 years for another 1776 Revolution, the ball is in our court it’s up to us to decide what to do with the future.
