Rev. Marcel Guarnizo
A Catholic priest in the Washington, D.C. area has ignited controversy over the past month after he reportedly refused to grant communion to a lesbian woman at her mother’s funeral.
As The Blaze has reported, the woman, Barbara Johnson, has publicly called for the Rev. Marcel Guarnizo of St. John Neumann Catholic Church to be removed. Now, following these pleas and the national outrage that followed, he has officially been placed on leave.
(Related: Lesbian Wants Priest Removed After She Was Denied Communion at Her Mother’s Funeral)
While specific details aren’t yet available regarding why the Washington archdiocese made the decision to impose the harsh penalty, a letter that is dated March 9 and that addresses the issue has been uncovered by the Washington Post. In it, Bishop Barry Knestout, the leader of Washington D.C. and Maryland area churches, told other local priests that the punishment came as a result of Guarnizo “engaging in intimidating behavior toward parish staff and others that is incompatible with proper priestly ministry.”
The entire letter reads:
I write to inform you that effective today, Father Marcel Guarnizo’s assignment at St. John Neumann Parish is withdrawn and he has been placed on administrative leave with his priestly faculties removed until such time as an inquiry into his actions at the parish is completed.
This action was taken after I received credible allegations that Father Guarnizo has engaged in intimidating behavior toward parish staff and others that is incompatible with proper priestly ministry.
Given the grave nature of these allegations, and in light of the confusion in the parish and the concerns expressed by parishioners, Father Guarnizo is prohibited from exercising any priestly ministry in the Archdiocese of Washington until all matters can be appropriately resolved, with the hope that he might return to priestly ministry.
Sincerely in Christ
Most Reverend Barry C. Knestout
Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia
Despite these words — which don’t mention the communion incident — many are assuming that the removal is related to the priest’s interaction with Johnson. Rev. Thomas LaHood, who is the pastor at St. John Neumann, denied this over the weekend, though. According to the Post, LaHood echoed the letter over the weekend and said that the removal has to do with “actions over the past week or two.”
“As we know there’s been disagreement within the parish over how and to whom Communion is distributed. From my perspective this disagreement and related emotions flow from love. Love for Christ, really and truly present in the Eucharist,” LaHood said during Sunday mass. “However, how we live out this love is important. The Scriptures tell us that we are known above all by how we love…I realize this letter is hard to hear. Please keep mind that this is a first personnel issue, dealing with issues of ministry in the church. Father Guarnizo will have every opportunity to present his position.”

Barbara Johnson (Image Credit: WUSA9)
Johnson, like Guarnizo, has been relatively quiet over the past few days in regards to addressing the incident.
“We are hopeful that Bishop Knestout’s decision will ensure that no others will have to undergo the traumatic experiences brought upon our family,” Johnson and here family said in a written statement responding to the disciplinary actions taken against the priest. “We urge all Catholics to put aside political points of view, and pray that our Church will remain in Christ’s love.”
Here’s what The Blaze originally reported about the incident:
Johnson, a lesbian, was joined at the church by her partner to celebrate her mother’s life. Just before the service, Guarnizo apparently learned about her sexuality and relationship. Then, during the service, when Johnson stood up to receive communion, the priest openly denied her.
“He put his hand over the body of Christ and looked at me and said, ‘I can’t give you Communion because you live with a woman, and in the eyes of the church, that is a sin,’” she explained following the incident.
Some bloggers, like Thomas Peters if CatholicVote.org, have railed against Johnson, pointing to a paper that appears to be published under her name. In it, she admits to being a Buddhist. Below, see a screen shot from the document, entitled, “Coming Out in the Heteronormative and Homophobic World of Education“:

Peters, among others, has dismissed Johnson’s communion concerns, going on to highlight her activism as a case behind her outrage with Guarnizo’s actions. Peters writes:
What’s that? Johnson is a self-professed Buddhist? No wonder she describes herself as a “student of … Buddhist philosophy” on her website.
So what was she doing presenting herself for Communion at her mother’s funeral if she apostatized? Why has she failed to mention this important fact in all of her appearances on the media?
Could it be, quite simply, because she herself has a political agenda? [...]
…I’m sick and tired of the media playing along with these agenda-driven personal stories while exercising zero vetting because they coincide with the media’s agenda.
Peters’ point is that Johnson, a Buddhist, shouldn‘t be too concerned over the priest’s refusal to give her communion. This, of course, depends on Johnson and her devotion — or lack thereof — to the Catholic faith. In the end, these details can only be speculated about. While critics would dismiss her claims, proponents, of course, would say that the priest’s act was discriminatory.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 12:10pmSeems this Priest like many evangelicals forget about how Jesus treated the woman at the well and Mary Magdalene. The current tendency to categorize and weight different sins is one of the great rationalizations of our time. Most people would do better if they skipped the selective reading and interpretation of the bible and committed themselves to ACTUALLY following the Golden Rule.

Communion is shared by those who profess belief among people who have similar values.
Her values are nowhere near those of the Catholic congregation. Most Catholics don’t profess a belief in Buddhism.
I went to a church & I don‘t believe they gave communion to kids who hadn’t gone through confirmation. I didn’t like it. But we are free. A person is free to join another denomination or congregation.
Trying to join a congregation & force it to change is hideous.
There is no reason why the several million can form their own church, ordain their own priests & join their members in marriage. For some reason they refuse. Why?

It never occurred to me to demand communion for my Buddhist spouse.
Does that mean I can go to any church & DEMAND that my spouse be given communion?
Maybe most of us aren’t proposing to get people accept all the myriad LGBT lifestyles. As such we would never DEMAND that a church give communion.

You do not know of what you speak. The woman at the well has 0 to do with this story. The major lesson of that story was God’s grace not only to the Jews but, to the hated Samaritans also. It is commanded by the Apostle Paul who speaking on Gods behalf, told the church and belivers to only come to the Lords table if they were believers that are not invovlved in sin or else when they eat, they take upon themselves God’s judgment.
“Whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body” (I Corinthians 11:27-29).
I’m a Baptist and have a laundry lists of problems with catholic doctrine but they are right on this one. I find myself defending catholics alot lately. If these huminists take them down, they will come for the rest of us next.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 1:28pmNot to mention…it would have been a sin for the priest to knowingly give her communion. Even a fallen priest deserves great respect as leaders of Christian faith are tempted/harassed by demons a thousand times more than the rest of us. I hope he continues to follow what he knows to be true…and if they cannot give him a home, I know there is a resurgence of bishops from the conservative right that will take this great priest.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 1:31pmActually the Catholic Church should not deny communion to anyone. The Bible puts the burden of improper partaking on the receiver. In 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 ” Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the LORD in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the LORD. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the LORD’s body. For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.”

For there are certain men crept in unawares , who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

I’m an atheist myself, but if you actually believe in these things then it seems like it would be an extremely un-christian action to knowingly allow someone to damn themselves for no reason other than that they’re ignorant. Not to mention the catholic church has tenants that specifically say only catholics actively in communion with the church and the pope are allowed to partake of communion. They don’t even allow non catholic christians to take their communion, the rules are very clear.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 2:55pmWhat is this woman at the well nonsense? That has nothing to do whatsoever with communion. Only active members of a a church in good standing are permitted to take the communion, at least that is how it should be. If the woman at the well repented, either left or married the man she was living with, she would gladly be accepted at the Lord’s table. If not, it is nothing but a farce. Check out I Corinthians 11, where one is taught to approach communion carefully with much self examination, lest you bring judgment on yourself. Those living in open sin are denied communion until they repent, that plain and simple.

As other said, Communion is for the believers of the faith, not a self professed Buddhist. I was born and raised in the Catholic Church. I converted to Judaism when I was 16 and had questions in my faith the Church was unable to answer. I got tired of the “It’s a mystery” blanket answer. Religion is not about blind faith, it is about a relationship with God. I found many answers to my questions when I studied the roots of my faith (Judaism). For that reason, and that reason alone I converted. I still have too many questions (most around Constantine and the First Council of Nicaea) to commit to a Christian church.
I sometimes will attend mass with my father and listen to the word and the homily, but I never ever stand in the line for Communion nor do I go to Reconciliation. As a questioner, I have no rights to demand equal treatment. That right is reserved for the faithful. It is even withheld from those who conducted certain sins until Reconciliation has been received and the penance performed.
I am sure the Bishop never even checked on this before reprimanding the priest.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 11:38amThis case just gets better and better, doesn’t it.
Barbara Johnson, who has apparently rejected the teachings Catholic faith completely, looked at her mother’s funeral as an opportunity to make a political point. She knew that she should be denied communion by any but the most liberal priests if the priest knew she was a practicing lesbian, and she made sure that he knew by presenting her “lover” before the service. So, then she is “shocked” when she is denied communion?
Ok, now we know that she has also rejected the teachings of the Catholic Church in that she’s a Buddhist? This was a setup from the getgo and she’s playing the “victim” role to the hilt.
As far as the Bishop Barry Knestout, there were two basic things he could do. 1) Stand behind his priest even though he doesn’t know enough about what happened to know what to do. Many bishops would have done it this way. Because they support their priests almost without question. This has led to some of the moving priests around who molested young men. or 2) Suspend his priest while he conducts his investigation. This kind of throws Fr. Marcel Guarnizo under the bus but keeps the Bishop from looking like he’s doing nothing. It is the best way to protect his diocese from allogations that a priest is abusive in any way.
Personally, I hate the fact that someone would conduct an attact on the Church during their mother’s funeral, but I cannot blame the Bishop for suspending his priest pendin

He could be re-assigned to other duties during the investigation. Instead, before all the facts could possible have been collected, an apology was made. Disgraceful.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 2:20pmTo receive Holy Communion worthily it is necessary to be free from mortal sin, to have a right intention, and to obey the Church’s laws on the fast required before Holy Communion out of reverence for the body and blood of Our Divine Lord. He who knowingly receives Holy Communion in mortal sin receives the body and blood of Christ; but he does not receive His graces and he commits a grave sin of sacrilege.

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 2:35pmThe churchs teaching is very clear on the Holy Eucharist. Assuming a validly ordained priest confects the Eucharist, even though bread and wine appear and even taste as such, they are in reality no longer mere bread and wine but Jesus Christ truly present, body, blood soul and divinity. That is why St. Paul admonishes us to examine ourselves carefully and if we are conscious of any mortal sin or sins, we are to abstain from receiving. A person who has mortal sins cannot receive until they have first gone to confession and been absolved. Those who receive holy communion in a state of mortal sin are guilty of sacrilege. The church is also clear that a priest who knows that particular person is not worthy to receive presents himself/herself for communion, he has a serious obligation to protect the precious body and blood of Christ. If he were to allow that person to receive, he himself would be committing a mortal sin.
