Priest Pushes for More Gun Control by Calling It a ‘Religious Issue’ Like ‘Abortion, Euthanasia or the Death Penalty’

Rev. James Martin Says Gun Control Is a Religious, Pro Life IssueIn the wake of the Aurora, Colorado, shooting, there has been a fair bit of politicization running amok, as gun critics have used the tragedy to tout stricter regulations. Joining the chorus of opinion on the matter is The Rev. James Martin, S.J., who has some controversial opinions about how religious people should view gun ownership rights.

In an op-ed for America Weekly, the Jesuit priest, author and contributing editor to the Catholic magazine, proclaimed that he believes gun control is an issue that religious people should care about — and deeply. He opened the piece by explaining that he’s “not a political person,“ though he admitted that his policy views are shaped by his ”religious ideals.”

Helping the poor, working for a peaceful world and respecting life from birth to death are some of the ideals he mentions as having a root in his Christian faith. However, he takes this argument a bit further, delving into gun control and the necessity to view it through a religious lens:

That is why I believe that gun control is a religious issue.  It is as much of a “life issue” or a “pro-life issue,” as some religious people say, as is abortion, euthanasia or the death penalty (all of which I am against), and programs that provide the poor with the same access to basic human needs as the wealthy (which I am for).  There is a “consistent ethic of life” that views all these issues as linked, because they are.

All of these issues, at their heart, are about the sanctity of all human life, no matter who that person is, no matter at what stage of life that person is passing through, and no matter whether or not we think that the person is “deserving” of life.  The issues just mentioned of course are very different. To take the most obvious example, the agonizing decisions surrounding euthanasia, with which loving families are sometimes confronted, are not to be equated with the twisted decisions of a mass murderer.  But they are all, in one way or another, actions that impinge on the sanctity of human life.  God gives life to every person, and that life is holy.

Rev. James Martin Says Gun Control Is a Religious, Pro Life Issue

The Rev. James Martin, S.J. (Image Credit: NCEA.org)

Martin goes on to say that the religious have a responsibility to move beyond prayer to action. The faith leader calls for lasting change and likens inaction in rectifying gun laws to passing a poor man whom one had the ability to assist but chose not to. He goes on to proclaim that “these shootings would not have happened if the shooter did not have such easy access to firearms and ammunition.” Martin continues:

So religious people need to be invited to meditate on the connection between the more traditional “life issues” and the overdue need for stricter gun control.  The oft-cited argument, “Guns don’t kill people, people do,” seems unconvincing.  Of course people kill people; as people also procure abortions, decide on euthanasia and administer the death penalty.  Human beings are agents in all these matters.  The question is not so much how lives are ended, but how to make it more difficult to end lives.

Pro-life religious people need to consider how it might be made more difficult for people to procure weapons that are not designed for sport or hunting or self-defense.  Why would anyone be opposed to firmer gun control, or, to put it more plainly, laws that would make it more difficult for mass murders to occur?  If one protests against abortions clinics because they facilitate the taking of human life, why not protest against largely unregulated suppliers of firearms because they facilitate the taking of human life as well?

Martin went on to say that he’s not looking to score political points and that he expects that the some on the right will respond quite negatively to his views. But, he firmly believes that religious leaders should be more engaged in protecting “the sanctity of life.”

If priests and clergy were doing their jobs, we would not have the morality problem we have in this country. They want to be politically correct instead of God correct. They are the ones who are failing. They need to stand up for decency and know who their Boss is. These political animals are in their positions and not called by God for their service. It is sickening what Americans are having to sort through any more just to see some decency.

This priest needs to take a few history courses on what has happened when the government has disarmed the people. As a minimum, he should take a look at the Youtube videos put together by the JPFO and Dr Ignacio P from Frontsite Academy. He should look up the comment from the Catholic Priest who commented that while the Nazis were coming for one group after another he did nothing, until there was no one left to do anything when they came for him. Considering the manner in which the socialists in the Democrat party are trying to force the church to do things that are against Catholic Doctrine, perhaps the good priest needs to wake up to what the real threat is. It’s not the gun owners.

In all honesty, as one poster put it, a few mason jars of gasoline would’ve caused a lot more death and destruction. It would’ve been easier to make a few Chlorine gas bombs than the tear gas that he did make. How many people would’ve died or been permanently disabled by that?

I absolutely agree. Further, Jesuits seem to have a name for being left wing wack jobs. Their job should be ministering to the poor and unsaved, not trying to influence politics. God gave me life and that life is valuable to him and should be to me. If I let someone else take it from me without resisting, it is demeaning the value of the life he gave me. If I am denied the means to protect my life, doesn’t that mean that some consider my life is of less value than the one attempting to take it?

I do not own guns YET! However I am a proud card carrying NRA member. One more however, I really do not see the need to have these automatic weapons like AK-47′s and the like as they are nothing but killing machines. Maybe for the military but I say ban the assault rifles. Pistols, non automatic rifles have at it…

He(Jesus Christ our Lord) said to them; BUT NOW IF YOU HAVE A PURSE, TAKE IT, AND ALSO A BAG; AND IF YOU DON’T HAVE A SWORD, SELL YOUR CLOAK AND BUY ONE.” Jesus knew this world would not be safe for the innocent, if the priest didn’t.

This is a liberal priest from a liberal order with a liberal weekly magazine. He is either just dumb like most liberals or is purposely leading God’s people astray. His article contains the usual illogic of the liberal mind…

“Jesus asks us to love our enemies, not to murder them; to pray for them, not to take vengeance; and he commends the peacemakers among us, not those advocating for more and more and more weapons. ”

      1) How is letting your enemy commit murder and go to hell better than defending yourself
      – Option 1 Don’t defend yourself – One murder, one soul lost to hell.
      – Option 2 Defend yourself – No murders, no souls lost to hell.
      2) How is defending yourself taking vengeance? It is NOT.
      – We don’t defend ourselves in vengeance.
      3) How does owning a gun make you NOT a peacemaker?
      – Guns are not the opposite of peace.

The feeble minded left seems incapable of realizing that the magnitude of 9/11 was the RESULT of gun control and that an armed citizen may have saved half the people in the theater – except guns were banned from the theater.

Who did the gun ban in the theater protect? The criminal or the citizen? Who left their guns outside the theater? The criminal or the citizen?

Gun laws and bans harm the citizen and help the criminal.

The argument that should be made is that banning guns from theaters, college campuses, banks and govt buildings is the danger and made this situation and countless other worse.

I LOVE your comment that “if the priests ….. were doing their jobs we wouldn’t have the morality problems we have….’. That is the best come back I have ever read!

Guns are not the problems. The crazed man in Denver not only had ..guns…but he allegedly booby trapped his apartment complex. This is NOT about guns!

Recently in my community a 16 year old was driving along the road and suddenly steered her vehicle into an 18 wheeler rig. She opted to commit suicide and luckily for the rest of the folks on the road she slammed her car into a massive rig and the rig driver did not receive any accident injuries. He was still traumatized by the insanity of this girl who turned her vehicle into a weapon. Where are the local priests to demand that it is moral duty to end vehicle usage?

There are many instances where law biding people have defended themselves and their loved ones from the amoral people whom the folks like this priest have failed. This priest should look upon himself and his profession as pure failures. For some 2000 years they have failed to stop violent people from preying upon the innocent.

Instead of this priest spouting off the ‘peace and warm fuzzies’ from his safe computer, how about getting up off your duff and heading to Mexico to comfort those whose family members have been beheaded and tortured? Stand up in those communities and lead a parade against drug cartel violence. SHOW some courage and get out on the front

Maybe he has good intentions, but lives in a protected world. There are too many nuts out there and families need protection from intruders and, at this point, from what might be coming from our own government. God doesn’t want us to overrun by evil. He inspired our Founding Fathers and they gave us the right to be armed. It wasn’t guns that kill the people in the movie theater, it was mental illness. They should be asking for more help with illnesses, not gun control. Maybe bringing God back into our school and government would help turn this country around and some sanity to our world.

It is a terrible temptation for men of good heart to seek to do somthing about these kind of tragedies. Since changing the human heart is beyond laws and legislation, they often foolishly go after inanimate objects which can be legislated, like guns. Their motivations are often pure, and they really want to…do somthing, anything to prevent this kind of senseless evil from happening again.

In the heat of their emotions they never consider that disarming law abiding good people will only encourage the criminal, and once the majority are disarmed it introduces a much greater evil…goverment tyranny. Our forefathers saw the threat of a tyrannical goverment, and the second ammendment is the only protection against it.

I admire their zeal to be helpful, and their empathy with the families of the fallen. But their solution is foolish, dangerous, and in the end will usher in greater evil than their minds can comprehend.

NHWINTER I agree wholeheartedly with you on this one. Our society has degenerated as we have been pushed to become more secular. The so-called “separation of church and state” was meant to protect the citizens from being pushed a religion by the government as was the case in England. It did not mean that we could not worship in classrooms or show our respect to biblical figures in our buildings. We have been pushed to become so un-religious that our morals as a society are diminishing. We have the Left to thank for that.

There are 93 Million Catholics in the USA alone. They are confronted daily with the problems of the poor and sick/dying/troubled people. We are confronted with the cheats/crooks/liars/politicians who will do anything to get elected…even to the point today they will Deny they said what we have seen them on tape saying !!
The only gun control we need is not sending guns to Drug Lords in Mexico and beyond. IF anyone had had a gun in that theatre, many lives could have been spared. DO not make the mistake of blanketing all the Catholics by the statements of one or two of them. OF course we all wish for a Peaceful world but until Jesus comes again, that’s not going to happen. I guess it makes for news, but what I’m seeing today is more than two articles about “THE CATHOLIC CHURCH” like we were the “BAD BOYS” ….so it’s quite obvious to me that there is a big effort to “take down the Catholic
Church’…(then ALL churches) this is how it’s been done in Russia, Germany etc. when populations were conquered by Communists/Facists— you can expect from now until November, a constant onslaught of anti-Catholic information. St Augustine and others speak of the just war. I see this priest is a Jesuit. They have been knee deep in Liberation Theology and have been admonished by the Pope for it. The Catholic church has been infiltrated by communist and homosexuals for many years with the intent to destroy the church. Yes. Either evil themselves are are to out of touch to know the difference between good and evil and to see the bigger picture. He is an example of pure incompetence and ignorance in a priest.

Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

1Pe 2:15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

This Priest is an idiot who should either learn the word of God and or stay out of politics and social issues. Always crys to disarm people rather than arm them with the truth and the word of God so that they can arm themselves responsibly to defend both soul and body against evil which he doesn’t seem to understand. The evil will always get and have guns an enslave and exploit those who do not. Carholics just used the government that they controlled to administer their evil by force whenever they wanted or needed to control others who rejected their falsehoods.

Agreed. Being a priest he should, foremost, be able to determine good from evil. He fails this miserably.

I think this is a very “progressive” man of the cloth. Not all priests feel this way, nor are all priests molesters like some here think.

His opinion is inconsistent with the natural rights give to us by God, the right to self-defense being chief among them. The rights also recognized by the Bill of Rights also stand in stark contrast to his ill-informed opinion. Next.
