Priests Gone Wild? Explosive Trial Exposes Messy Record on Sex Crimes in Philadelphia Archdiocese

PHILADELPHIA (AP/The Blaze) — A string of Roman Catholic priests testified Wednesday in a landmark clergy-abuse case, saying they reported fellow priests to the archdiocese after finding them with pornography or in unhealthy relationships with children. (Related: Landmark Philly Priest Abuse Trial to Commence on Monday.)

The priests, uncomfortably, are prosecution witnesses in the trial of a longtime supervisor in the Philadelphia archdiocese, Monsignor William Lynn. The former secretary for clergy is charged with endangering children by allegedly helping the church cover up abuse complaints.

The Rev. Joseph Okonski told jurors Wednesday that he found pornographic magazines and videos, and a sexually explicit letter to a seventh-grade boy, in another priest’s bedroom in 1995.

The graphic letter, which purported to be from a classmate, asked if the boy wanted oral sex. The author said he fantasized about seeing the boy getting spanked by his father. The boy was told to write “Yes” on a bulletin board at the parish school if he wanted to engage in sex acts with his “secret lover.”

Okonski’s housemate admitted writing the letter and soon left the parish, Okonski said. But the next trial witness said the priest landed at his rectory, where he worked with altar boys and had no restrictions on his ministry.

The pattern of abuse may go back quite far. One adult man testified that when he was a student at a Philadelphia area Catholic high school, one priest stalked him, locked him in a conference room and sexually assaulted him, with no consequences. The Huffington Post reported:

In a far-reaching sex crimes coverup trial underway in Philadelphia, a former Catholic high school student testified today that a priest stalked him, locked him in a school conference room and ordered him to unzip his pants.

The student — now a 36-year-old man — said loud banging on the locked door halted the priest, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The explosive testimony came on the third day of a historic trial against two Roman Catholic priests in the Philadelphia archdiocese. The Rev. James Brennan is accused of attempting to rape a 14-year-old boy in 1996. Monsignor William Lynn is accused of two counts of endangering the welfare of a child for covering up cases of molestation and abuse by members of the clergy.

Prosecutors argue that abusive priests were, at best, transferred if they got in trouble, then left to seek out new victims.

The witnesses, on cross-examination, said the archbishop had the final say in priest transfers. Lynn could make recommendations, but the late Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua or his successor, retired Cardinal Justin Rigali, made the decision, they said.

“Inevitably, any movement of priests is done by the archbishop,” Okonski said.

The priests testified that they put in awkward positions by the behavior of men with whom they lived and worked.

A pastor said he was tasked with finding out which priest had ordered the X-rated movies that showed up on their cable bill.

Another called the Office for Clergy because his pastor had an all-consuming relationship with a young boy. Father Michael Hennelly said he was concerned, especially after hearing about the pastor’s last such relationship, after a fallout with the boy had ended violently. Hennelly soon asked for a transfer.

“For my well-being, I couldn’t live and work there,” he said.

Hennelly later joined the Office of Clergy staff in 2004, the same year Lynn finished his 12-year stint as its director. He described working with priests trying to achieve what he called “sexual sobriety.”

St. John Vianney, a church-run hospital in Downingtown, had “Sexaholics Anonymous” meetings devoted exclusively to priests. Others attended “Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous,” Hennelly said.

There are about 800 priests in the Philadelphia archdiocese. More than 60 have been accused of molesting children since 1948, although only a few have ever been charged. About 500 Catholic priests in the U.S. have been convicted of sexual-abuse charges, according to the advocacy group BishopAccountability.org.

But no church supervisors were ever charged for mishandling abuse complaints until Lynn.

Prosecutors in Philadelphia issued two explosive grand jury reports on priest sexual abuse in 2005 and 2011. They blasted Rigali and Bevilacqua but concluded they could not make a case against either, in part because of legal time limits.

New accusations led Lynn to be charged last year with felony child endangerment and conspiracy. He faces up to 28 years if convicted. Prosecutors call the archdiocese an unindicted co-conspirator in his case.

Four others were charged in the same indictment with sexually assaulting boys. The Rev. James Brennan is on trial with Lynn. Defrocked priest Edward Avery will serve 2-1/2 to five years after pleading guilty last week to sexual assault and conspiracy. And the Rev. Charles Engelhardt and former Catholic school teacher Bernard Shero are set for trial later this year. They are accused of raping the same boy that Avery assaulted.

All but Avery have pleaded not guilty.

That is one of the top ten most ignorant things I have ever heard a person say. Apples and oranges. Politics has almost nothing to do with morals. It is based on ideology. If all you have ever been exposed to is communist literature you can be a great person morally and legitimately believe that communism is correct.

Child molesting has to do with personal ethics. Ethics has to do with your conscience. We all have consciences, we all know right from wrong. Child molesters molest because they choose to be evil. Democrats do stupid liberal things because they are ignorant.

      Ignorance is not malevolence.

but then, you already knew that, since you didn’t post malevolently. ;)

By the way, I am a hardcore libertarian conservative and liberal ignorance drives me crazy.

But so does ignorance that comes from stupid republicans who think that just because they have a better political ideology that somehow they are saints and that people in their party can do no wrong.

It is deceptive to call these perverts “Priests”

These are GAY PEDOPHILES WHO INVADED THE PRIESTHOOD.

The CC certainly holds its share of blame in this mess for not reporting the pedophiles to the police at the first hint. The same thing happened (on a worse scale) in our public schools, and the schools generally handled the mess in the same way (by NOT reporting the pedophiles but, rather, transferring them to another district). The CC is guilty as He!!.

But it was the GAY PEDOPHILES, masquerading as priests, who raped the children. To THEM goes eternal damnation.

I think the CC is to blame in another area also. In 1 Cor 7:6 Pauls writes something by permission and not of commandment. In verse 7 He writes that he would that all men were as myself (unmarried) but each has their own gift from God. In verse 9 He writes that if they can’t contain, let them marry. It is better to marry than to burn. Paul himself, who btw wrote 13 or 14 books of the New Testament, did not command missionaries or preachers not to marry. He said we each have our own gift. But the Catholic Church forbids their priests to marry. Not even Paul was that gutsy. When you go against God’s word, bad things happen.

All I have to say is “EQUAL JUSTICE FOR ALL”. That includes priests, representatives, the president of the United States, lawyers, janitors, preachers, ditch diggers, and whoever else breaks the law.

These priests must have lost all fear of the Lord when they committed these acts. Well, I can assure you of one thing…… They will gain a healthy dose of that fear back when they see God at judgement.

Men are not meant to be celibate!!!!! God made man to procreate and to bond with his wife. I believe that many of these men over the years have gone into the priesthood for the very purpose of finding a young boy. They are so protected from the law. Until these men are allowed to marry, this will go on and on.

9635kari – Man is not as an animal. We all have different callings to act upon given to us by God Himself. We each must use restraint at times that we cannot comprehend for His reasons, not ours. Celibacy is a gift to some.

      Revelation 14
      The Lamb and the 144,000
1 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. 3 And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4 These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. 5 No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.

@OneGodInKansas: You’re missing the context of Scripture. The Catholic Church does not forbid people to marry. That was a doctrine of the Gnostics who forbade people to marry because they believed that the material world is evil. Catholics elevate marriage to a Sacrament – holy and resembling the relationship between Christ and his Bride.

Every single person is encouraged to stay chaste (no sex outside of marriage). Priests, because of the missionary life of ministry, are asked to take vows to remain single for the rest of their lives.

And abstaining from meats? Have you never fasted like Paul asks?

There are approximately 410,593 priests Worldwide in the Catholic Church as of 02/12. I am so grateful that the Church is assisting, once again, in the effort to condemn & punish those pedophiles & sex offenders who took advantage (molested/raped) of the innocents. Justice has been & will be served, and any who allowed this crime to continue will be punished by God if not by earthly Judicial means. The entire Catholic Church, all of the Catholics in the world are not guilty of these crimes. The evil, sinful “priests” involved in this crime are the guilty. Satan has & will infiltrate & destroy any who are weak & willing to turn their backs on God for their own pleasures. The Church is repenting & reforming & Satan doesn’t like it. “However, the inspired utterance says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances and teachings of demons, by the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, marked in their conscience as with a branding iron; forbidding to marry…” 1 Tim. 4:1-3

Forbidding to marry was a teaching of demons because it surpressed a natural God given desire, a very strong one at that. When it is repressed it finds ways to come out such as this and molestation. Sad.

Peter was married, Paul was not. at least according to the bible. a lot of the apostles were married, a few were not. there was no command not to marry, and no command to marry. Paul also said that those who didn’t marry may be more effective ministers if they chose to remain single. If They Chose To. Christ approved marriage, his first miracle was at a wedding feast. There’s more. Read your bible

Some try to claim that this verse represents the Catholic Church because in the Roman Catholic Rite – The Priests and Nuns are to be Celibate and not marry and during Lent we abstain from meat on Fridays. But one must know what the Catholic Church really teaches and then read this verse closely and in context. It is then that we see that the verse is not speaking of the Catholic Church at all.

In this verse, Paul is actually referring to the Gnostic’s. An early church Heresy. The Gnostics felt that marriage was bad.

We know this is what Paul is talking about because for one thing – Paul is a Celibate himself and would not condemn celibacy in his own letter. And we know that Paul speaks highly of Marriage in other letter to the Corinthians.

We also know because he makes it clear later in 1 Tim 6:20 when he warns Timothy to stay away from the babbling of those of “Knowledge” – Referring to the Gnostics.

Catholics do not forbid Marriage. Marriage is a Sacrament. Our Priest and Religious vow a consecration to Celibacy as Paul did simply as a Discipline of the Roman Rite. There is strong Biblical Evidence to support this.

Any male, priest or layman (no pun intended) who molests another male sexually is a homosexual predator. Predator priests need to be in jail. Those who covered for them also need to be in jail. Interestingly however, the same laws that protect the average person from being fired now also applies to priests. You’ve gotta have a case against them that will stand up in court.

Does something draw a certain kind of people to priesthood, or are priests the only ones to get caught? We’ve seen a bunch of stories about teachers and coaches, but it seems like priests blow them all out of the water. I think part of it may be that they feel these urges early and hope that going into a life of piety can cure them, though they only find temptation.

Stupid evangelicals. Thats the best you have got. Listen, there are weirdos enough for us all. Have fun get all over the Evangelicals. Why don’t we hold them all accountable: Evangelicals, Catholics, Muslims. Atheist, Republics, Democrats, Conservatives, Liberals, that guy down the street from me. If evil lifts its head shoot it.
