Tea Party Candidates Shake Up Primary Races

(AP) — Establishment Republicans vied with challengers favored by tea party activists one last time Tuesday in a multi-state finale to a primary election season marked by economic recession and political upheaval.
Tea Party Candidates Shake Up Primary RacesHighlighted by GOP-tea party showdowns in New Hampshire and Delaware, six states chose candidates for governor and five featured contests for nominations to the Senate.

In New York, 40-year veteran Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel faced the voters for the first time since the House ethics committee accused him of 13 violations, most of them relating to his personal finances.

So far this year, seven incumbent members of Congress have tasted defeat, four Republicans and three Democrats. And that does not include a lengthy list of GOP contenders who fell to tea party-supported challengers despite having the backing of party officials eager to maximize their gains in November.

With unemployment high and President Barack Obama’s popularity below 50 percent, Republicans said the primaries reflected an enthusiasm that would serve the party well in the fall, when control of Congress will be at stake.

Democrats, however, said the presence of tea party-supported Republicans would prove costly to the GOP on Nov. 2 — a proposition that remained to be tested in seven weeks’ time.

In Delaware, Rep. Mike Castle sought the nomination to a Senate seat held for 36 years by Vice President Joe Biden in a primary that took a sharp turn for the negative three weeks ago when the Tea Party Express announced it would come to the aid of challenger Christine O’Donnell.

Castle, a former two-term governor and a veteran of nearly two decades in the House, was repeatedly assailed as a liberal, a Republican in name only. He and the party responded by challenging O‘Donnell’s fitness for public office and her ability to win a statewide election in the fall.

While Republicans brawled, New Castle County Executive Chris Coons coasted to the Democratic nomination without opposition. Biden resigned the seat in early 2009, and his successor, Democratic Sen. Ted Kaufman, pledged not to run for a full term.

Republicans in New Hampshire sorted through a crowded field of candidates for the nomination to a seat long held by retiring GOP Sen. Judd Gregg.

Former Attorney General Kelly Ayotte was the party-backed favorite, and she added support from prominent conservatives who have played a heavy role in several primaries this year, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Her principal opposition came from Ovide Lamontagne, a lawyer and former head of the state board of education. He campaigned with the support of tea party activists and claimed to be the most conservative candidate in a race that also included businessmen Bill Binnie and Jim Bender.

The winner will face Democratic Rep. Paul Hodes, who is giving up his seat in the House to run for the Senate.

Republicans must gain 10 seats this fall if they are to win control of the Senate, and their chances count heavily on their ability to prevail in both Delaware and New Hampshire.

In Wisconsin, businessman Ron Johnson faced two minor opponents for the Republican nomination to oppose three-term Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold in November in what polls show is a tight race. Johnson has said he will spend millions of his own money to finance his campaign through Election Day.

In New York, Democratic Attorney General Andrew Cuomo faced no opposition for the party’s nomination for governor, and he will be the prohibitive favorite in the fall for an office his father held for three terms a generation ago.

Former Rep. Rick Lazio vied with political novice Carl Paladino, a wealthy developer who got tea party support, for the Republican nomination.

In Maryland, former Republican Gov. Bob Ehrlich sought the nomination for a rematch against the man who ousted him from office in 2006, Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley.

There were gubernatorial nomination contests in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Wisconsin, where Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker collided with former Rep. Marc Neumann for the Republican line on the fall ballot. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was heavily favored for the Democratic nomination.

Rangel’s principal challenger for the nomination in his Harlem-based district was Adam Clayton Powell IV, a state assemblyman whose father Rangel defeated 40 years ago. In the decades since, Rangel rose to become chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, with enormous power over taxes, trade, Medicare and more, but Democrats forced him to step aside from that panel while he battles ethics charges.

He is accused of accepting several New York City rent-stabilized apartments, and omitting information on his financial disclosure forms. He’s also accused of failing to pay taxes from a rental property in the Dominican Republic, and improperly soliciting money for a college center to be named after him. He has vowed to fight the charges, and faces an ethics committee trial, possibly after the elections.

Rhode Island had a rare open seat in its two-member House delegation, following the decision of Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy to retire. Providence Mayor Bob Cicilline, who is openly gay, was favored over three rivals for the Democratic nomination. The winner will be a prohibitive favorite in the fall in the heavily Democratic district.

In addition to the seven state primaries, Washington, D.C., chose nominees for local office.

Democratic Mayor Adrian Fenty drew a strong challenger for the nomination, and spent several weeks apologizing to voters for behaving arrogantly during four years in office.

    Hey Ray “numbnuts” Gone….

    1. The Presidency has nothing to do with “debt”, last time I checked congress was the one that spent the money.

    2. The senate was lost in 2006 by…oh yea…THE DEMS (shortly after the poop hits the fan)

    3. Doubled the debt in 8 years…..hmm….the DEMOCRATIC Congress (the ones that control the money, if you remember) more than quadrupled the debt in 18 months.

Its ignorant people like you that is wrong with this country, and you should be ashamed to call your self an “American”

I love Glenn, TheBlaze and all, but is this proper journalism/blogging form Meredith? You’ve pasted the entire AP article, and interspersed it with clips of Glenn and Rush and added links to O‘Donnell and Palin that aren’t in the original article. There’s no link to AP even, unless I missed it.

Do you have some kind of license or authorization to do this? I hope so. There‘s a move afoot to sue bloggers for improper usage of others’ material on their blogs.

Democrats and Republicans still don’t get it. We need to get progressives out if we want to make this nation great again. Party as usual is defeating this country. Next we need to remove all the liberal bureaucrats out of government agencies. Bureaucrats who writes policies, liberal diplomats, environmental activist and all those who have lied and lied and made America week. Liberals who has no ideas accept to go back to socialism and communism. Liberals has not capability to be innovative and use 21st century problem solving techniques. Liberal are so dumb they prefer to emulate Communist China and Communist Soviet. When the rest of the world is moving forward we are moving backwards. Capitalism can move to the next generation of Capitalistic ideas that will propel America to even greater heights. It will increase the middle class and ensure individuals has the opportunity to change his lot. It also allow those who wishes to remain in the status quo to have that freedom to remain there. Just as we need Managers and Executives, we also need Janitors and Garbage Collectors. Just as a PHD scholar wishes to be a Janitor, a Waiter can wish to be a manager. This is freedom, this is what makes America great. We have the freedom to be fat or freedom to eat fried chicken even if it may be harmful to our health. Again, this is freedom. This is a fair society. We don’t want socialist to tell us we should all be managers. That is why unions and communism does not work. Not everyone has the ability, the qualification, the leadership skills, the determination to be a manager. I for one prefers to spend my time fishing all day long.

I hope the Reps wake up in time to see that America is sick of thier lies, deceit, and politics-as-usual. You can’t take a page out of the Dem playbook and simply blame the other side anymore – Americans aren’t falling for the blame game. We’ve been forced to choose the lesser of two evils for WAY too long now. I hope that the ideals of the Tea Party can take hold in the Republican party, and if not, then it may be time for a third major party. It may sting for a while as Rep votes are split, but I have faith in the American people that, if given a clear choice that truely seperates itself from the scumbags on both sides that have been running this country for decades, they will make the right choice. It’s time to vote out ALL incumbents and set term limits. Politics should no longer be a profession – it should be a service to your district and it’s people, as it was originally intended. I’m just your average citizen, but if I had the opportunity, I’d be willing to leave my job for 2-4 years and serve my community and neighbors by representing THEM in congress. Whatever the majority of people in my district wanted, that is how I would vote. I can’t imagine how that is such a foreign idea to those that currently hold office anywhere, but apprently I was gone that day in 6th grade civics class when they explained the point in time when everything was turned upside down and those who were supposed to serve their country sold thier souls.

The fact is that it is that either the “Tea Party Movement” or Senator Graham will go the way of the Dodo bird.

A RINO like Senator Graham cannot survive in a nation of citizens that understand that FREEDOM RESULTS IN PROSPERITY AND THAT TYRANNY IS THE ROOT OF POVERTY AND DESPAIR. His statement proves that he understands his peril. Senator Graham’s early support of Cap and Trade proves he is an enemy of individual freedom (Capitalism) and a “Wannabe Peer.” RINOS like Senator Graham are more of a danger to the American Revolution than the admitted tyrants like Obama.

The Tea Parties are not an ideological movement with a leader who determines the ideology and movement’s objectives. Some of those who organize and publicize the meetings may think that they are ideological leaders but they are simply providing a forum to discuss the discontent with the direction the government is being taken. The Tea Party Participants have their own ideas and those ideas are not necessarily homogenous.

The mere fact that the “Tea Party Leaders” provided the forum and publicity to establish the meeting does not mean that they can dictate the ideology of the Tea Party Participants or even affect that ideology. The Tea Parties are attended to participate in logical discussion of the issues and the participants will base their opinion upon the discussion of the issues. The Tea Party Participant’s ideology and support of any candidates will be unique to each participant not dictated by the provider of the form.

Tea Party Participants are not sheep and the provider of the forum is not the shepherd.

This is the exact reason the democrats are so afraid…. There is no defacto “party leader” to go after. They gave to resort to attacking an individual instead of the head of the party or the party as a whole. There are many different “TEA Parties” to have to deal with and they have no avenue to quash the party like they do with the other political upstarts. You can attack a party but not a movement that goes after BOTH parties.
