Prince: ‘You Wear a Burqa. There’s no Choice. People Are Happy With That.’

The artist once known as Prince, then for a stint in the 1990′s as an unpronounceable symbol, and now as Prince again, thinks it’s “fun being in Islamic countries.” He also thinks women are happy to wear burqas.
According to an interview in The Guardian, Prince, a Jehovah’s Witness of nearly ten years believes Islamic theocracies – where citizens are told what to wear, where to go and what to do — cannot be labeled ”oppressive.” He went on to explain:
“We can’t do what we want to do all the time. If you don’t have boundaries, what then?
“It’s fun being in Islamic countries, to know there’s only one religion. There’s order. You wear a burqa. There’s no choice. People are happy with that.”
When asked what he would say to Muslim women who are unhappy to be forced to wear burqas – which cover the wearer’s entire body apart from their eyes – he replied: “There are people who are unhappy with everything. There’s a dark side to everything. I don’t want to get up on a soapbox. My view of the world, you can debate that forever.”
Strange, coming from the almost androgynous looking singer whose tight, flamboyant outfits, raunchy song lyrics, and penchant for romancing his proteges became world famous.
Prince then proceeded to tell The Guardian about finding his religion:
Prince embraced religion in 2001, when he became a Jehovah’s Witness. “I was anti-authoritarian but at the same time I was a loving tyrant,” he told the Guardian. “You can’t be both. I had to learn what authority was. That’s what the Bible teaches. The Bible is a study guide for social interaction.
Since becoming a Jehovah’s Witness, Prince no longer performs his older, more piquant songs as he now considers them inappropriate. Perhaps he sees the burqa as a potential prop for one of his new videos…

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 9:02amI’m glad to hear he found God! Even if you disagree with JWs. I’m sorry to see that no one thus far has given him credit for that. Thanks Glenn Beck listeners. I guess you weren’t really listening at all. I think his statements are clear that there are people happy with oppression they live under. He didn’t say he thinks “we” or “all” should live by those rules. What a hateful crowd!!!

So saying you care about human rights is a lie..Any one who opposes brutal regimes which do our bidding has no rights. You’re hypocrites and you know it.And a regime is not a culture. When apartheid is IMPOSED on a powerless people who suffer and oppose it that is a tyranical regime[might makes right].When womeen themselves actually BELIEVE that women should cover themselves in public [or any thing else they believe] that is a CULTURE. Regimes that impose subjugation of others should be resisted[like todays palestinians resisting israeli occupation] Backward cultures have the right to exist whether we like it or not.Culture is transmitted by women and when they want to change they will.Based on your reasoning any day now you’ll want to start murdering every person on earth in every country where gay marriage is not allowed.

If they want to that is fine for them in other countries. Especially here in the US, France, and Britain, we need to be able to see what is under that burqa, this since radical Muslim radicals started to attack the US. If this didn‘t happen we wouldn’t have to make laws against them.
You come to the US and the US asks for them to be taken off, which we haven’t yet, but France has, then you do it, or go to another country that says you don’t have to.
Look at what almost happened this week, two men were on the task to blow up a US Military Recruitment Center. ( http://tiny.cc/8c0jd ) They were two muslim converts, 8 days after the House Hearing on Radical Converts in the US.

But all the JW’s I know cringe whenever he shows up spouting off about his views and clinging to his fame stature in the world. Other famous people who have become Jehovah’s Witnesses have shut down their once famous posture and humbly worked side by side with his or her congregation to bring honor and dignity to our God Jehovah and His Son Jesus Christ. They, we have not sought out the publicity lights to shine on them anymore, they want to put on Christ-like humility. The likes of Michael Jackson and Prince have difficulty giving up their fame in the world. I will pray Prince will be able to get with the program and stop his self promoting ways. Jehovah’s Witnesses want to honor God, not themselves. Just because someone goes to meetings or their parents are a JW, that does not make them a Jehovah’s Witness.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 10:42amSome of the posts here are dismissive for the sake of being dismissive. Are you always in attack mode with that judgmental point of view at the ready?
At least the man is taking a stand for what some would call a righteous cause. I too understand the burqua, I don‘t think it’s a good idea but I understand it. I also understand what most feminists call sexist about the orthodox jewish practice of a woman not being touched by her husband during her period because she is unclean. I know it sounds cold and dominating but for the people who practice the faith it is a wonderful act of submission first to God and second to her husband.
Don‘t judge what you don’t understand as long as it isn’t harming you directly. If women want to wear the burqua as an act of submission to God and their husbands, that is their choice.
For those of you who judge Prince on his musical ability, the man is a highly skilled musician, and performer. Not my particular style of music but the man is brilliant and a great song writer.
Most importantly, he has turned his live over to God and it is being reflected in his work. He is being transformed from the inside out by the Holy Spirit. That’s a good thing. Again, I‘m not a JW and that isn’t my thing but good for Prince for making the tough decisions politically, artisticly and according to his faith. Those of you on the attack, you can learn something from that attitude.

Thats where you are wrong. I know the difference between right and wrong/good and evil but since I can not change what another person is I waste my time complaining about it. Are you going to change the minds of the radical islamists? I understand that you can not do anything that will change their ways because they believe that they are serving God in their oppressive and backward ways. It is what it is even though it isn’t what I know to be honorable and just in the eyes of God.
Your post is right in line with my original response, so many of you are in constant attack mode as if you have all the answers. Instead of attacking those with whom you disagree, try praying for them.

My husband worked in Iran for a few years and said the minute an iranian woman got on a plane to fly out, off came the burqa’s and on came the mini skirts and makeup and everything else normal women love. The only women I could conceive liking the covering are the butt-ugly ones.

———-
Your original response was to akin forcing women to wear burqas to not having sex with a woman when she has her period. That is comparing apples and oranges. The latter is a minor and temporary marital consideration. A burqa is a totally different practice. It effaces women. It was imposed on them by male misogynists, and women have NO SAY in the matter. Burqas are hazardous to a woman’s physical health. They are an outward sign of oppression and hate.
I would hardly call what we are doing “complaining.” Islam is a threat to civilized society. You go ahead and remain silent. Pray in the comfort of your home. Passiveness in the face of evil is a sin. We will continue to denounce Islam and voice our outrage — and do what must be done to keep Islam from spreading its tentacles inside our Republic.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 1:44pm@BlueBonnet, That is not my position. I was out doing yardwork thinking how I can best present my position and I think I have come to a place where everyone who is a Christian will understand.
We as Americans and we as American Christians are angered by the ideology that Radical Islam presents. Especially the oppressive aspects of that ideology. Our biggest complaint is that they want to force this ideology on everyone in the world. I’m Christian, why would I want to have Radical Islam thrust upon me? Their morality is not my morality.
Likewise Being Christian how can we expect Radical Islam to adopt our morality regardless of how righteous it is in the face of oppression? It isn’t who they are. You will know a tree by it’s fruit right? So how are we being any different in our approach to our own beliefs than those who are trying to force their beliefs upon us if we expect them to live within our code of morality? It doesn’t make sense.
I can not expect an apple tree to gro figs just because I like figs and think apples are evil.
The burqua is wrong in my eyes, it is oppression, it is demeaning. I understand why they adopt it, i don’t agree with it. But who am I to tell them what to do?

——-
OK. I’ll put this in spiritual terms. You lack discernment, brother. There is evil and there is good. Your conscience teaches you that, even if you are not a Christian. Your conscience tells you it is wrong to kill, to hate to oppress and subjugate — unless it is seared.
I wonder what you would have done in Hitler’s time? Most Germans looked the other way and went on with their merry lives while Jews were being butchered. Liberals looked the other way while one of their own was being gang-raped by a celebrating Islamic mob in Egypt. Are you going to look the other way or stand for truth and righteousness? Bible verse for you:
“When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[a] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.” (Eze. 3:18)
Maybe you should pray about this. Peace.

Report Post »Jesus didn’t seem to have a problem with it. Nor the apostles Paul, or Peter, or Luke, or any of the rest of them. Why did Christians become so Milquetoast about telling people about a better way to live? The fact that Judeo- Christianity has been the foundation of every free republic on the planet you carer to name ought to be shouted from the rooftops, not apologized for and put in some imaginary place of equality with Islam. Look at nearly every hell-hole of human rights violations, and look at the religious heritage of it- it’s either Islam, Hinduism or something else. Every free and prosperous nation on earth has Judeo-Christianity as it’s heritage. They may not be walking in it now (see most of Europe) but the fact they once did led to the freedoms and rights they now enjoy. The proof of this ought be no further than a contrast between Israel and the rest of the Middle East. Defending the forced wearing of the burqua because “it’s their choice” is not much different than defending slave owners. Both are forcing people to do something they probably wouldn‘t do if they weren’t threatened with loss of life.

The more we try to change who they are the more they will push back. What did Jesus say, those who hath an ear let him hear, if they don’t listen shake the dust off your feet.
He didn’t tell us to change the world he told us to allow the Holy Spirit to transform us into Christlike beings and be the light of the world. They will know you by your fruit. Stay connected to him so that we would bear good fruit. He didn’t tell us to start attaching good fruit to barren vines. Tell me, is debasing, pointing fingers, judging other people is that bearing good fruit? Is that being the salt of the earth or the light of the world?
You cannot expect non-Christians to abide by Christian values. It is foolishness to them. I’m not saying be aware of the sin and point out the sin, I‘m saying don’t think you are going to change it by beating up on Prince for his position on Burqua’s. Pray for him, he’ll come around. Telling people about a better way to live, spreading the gospel is one thing. Telling people how to live is quite another. Jesus spoke to believers about using discernment in what we do so that we would not end up acting foolish and giving up the power that the Holy Spirit has for us to influence the world when they see our good works and glorify him. He said nothing about berating people for being wrong on opinions about other cultures. Love your neighbor, be the light.
The internet is more and more proving itself to be an ineffective tool for speaking with people about belief and faith. There are too many opportunities for misunderstanding and too few people able to communicate in clear and concise sentences which promote their opinions. The more we show ourselves to be harsh judgers of others the less we stand a chance of being a part of winning anyone for Christ.

It appear that although he was baptized a Christian, he doesn’t really believe it, because here he is advocating forcing his or that of someone else will upon another human being. Christ’s plan is freedom of choice. Although, there is a lot of good in the Muslim religion, force seems to be a great theme within it.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 8:41pmA little more on the cult that the great and wise “Princy” belongs to:
Fifty years ago the Jehovah’s Witnesses numbered fewer than 100,000. Now there are several million of them around the world. They don’t have churches; they have “Kingdom Halls” instead. Their congregations are uniformly small, usually numbering less than two hundred. Most Witnesses used to be Catholics or Protestants. Let’s look a little at their history, because that will help us understand their unique doctrines.
The sect now known as the Jehovah’s Witnesses was started by Charles Taze Russell, who was born in 1852 and worked in Pittsburgh as a haberdasher. He was raised a Congregationalist, but at the age of seventeen he tried to convert an atheist to Christianity and ended up being converted instead—not to outright atheism, but to agnosticism. Some years later he went to an Adventist meeting, was told that Jesus would be back at any time, and got interested in the Bible.
The leading light of Adventism had been William Miller, a flamboyant preacher who predicted that the world would end in 1843. When it didn’t, he “discovered” an arithmetical error in his eschatological calculations and said it would end in 1844. When his prediction again failed, many people became frustrated and withdrew from the Adventist movement, but a remnant, led by Ellen G. White, went on to form the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
It was this diminished Adventism which influenced Russell, who took the
