Principal of IA High School Resigns Following Christian Band’s Lecture on Gays & Abortion

Principal Resigns Following Junkyard Prophets Performance | Bradlee Dean

Bradlee Dean (Image Credit: YouTube)

DUNKERTON, Iowa (The Blaze/AP) — Earlier this week, we told you about Bradlee Dean and his band, Junkyard Prophets. Their performance at an Iowa public high school has made headlines across the nation and has inspired a fair amount of controversy.

Now, the principal of the secondary school that allowed members of a Christian rock band to espouse their anti-gay, anti-abortion views while showing students images of fetuses that had apparently been aborted is resigning, the district superintendent said.

Mike Cooper, who oversees grades 7-12 at the school in Dunkerton, will tender his resignation Monday and remain on the job through the end of the school year, Dunkerton Superintendent Jim Stanton told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier for a story published Tuesday.

(Related: ‘Anti-Gay’ Christian Band Sparks Anger After Lecturing IA Public School Students on Gays, Aborted Fetuses & More)

Cooper declined to comment to the newspaper Tuesday about his pending departure, and he did not immediately respond Wednesday to a phone message left at his office by The Associated Press.

Below, watch Dean defend himself amid massive controversy:

Stanton said Cooper‘s decision is not related to Cooper’s recommendation that the district invite the band Junkyard Prophet to perform at last week’s assembly, and said the plan had been “in the works” for nearly a month.

“He simply wants to be a superintendent,” Stanton said, acknowledging that the timing of the announcement suggested there might be more to it.

Several students and parents said they were puzzled at why the band was invited to the school in Dunkerton, which is 70 miles northwest of Iowa City. The band is affiliated with a Minnesota group, You Can Run But You Cannot Hide, that describes itself as a Christian ministry and that states its extremely conservative views on social issues on its website. The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies it as a hate group.

Students said the March 8 assembly kicked off with a performance by the band and discussion about how some music can negatively influence young people. They said the group then tried to impress upon students that homosexuality, sex and abortion are wrong, displaying images of aborted fetuses on a screen above the stage.

Here’s the portion of the address that covers infanticide, Planned Parenthood and offers some other graphic themes and pictures (caution: graphic images):

Jennifer Littlefield told the La Crosse Tribune, of Wisconsin, that her daughter Alivia, who is a junior at the school, called her crying so hard after the assembly that she could barely understand her.

“They told my daughter, the girls, that they were going to have mud on their wedding dresses if they weren’t virgins,” said Littlefield, who also said she didn’t appreciate what she described as gay bashing.

“They told these kids that anyone who was gay was going to die at the age of 42. It just blows me away that no one stopped this,” she said.

And here’s the segment of the speech with a focus on homosexuality (caution: adult subject matter):

Stanton apologized to students last week and said he shocked by the group’s message, which he says contradicts the message of tolerance and acceptance that the district stresses.

At a special board meeting Tuesday night, Stanton outlined a plan for the district to deal with the fallout from the assembly and prevent similar problems in the future, including providing counseling for students and faculty members who request it, bolstering the district’s diversity curriculum, notifying parents before future assemblies and vetting future performers more thoroughly.

Some parents said the changes weren’t enough and they called on Stanton to resign as well.

“The kids are suffering over this deal and, Mr. Stanton, you signed the checks,” Tim Westergreen said. “I respectfully ask for your resignation.”

Stanton said he does not plan to quit, and several school board members, including its president, Alen Nagel, said they had no interest in seeing Stanton resign.

Regardless of which position is correct, as discussed by this speaker, the school was in violation of the establishment clause for having an openly christian slanted speaker preaching to someone else’s kids. If you wish for YOUR kids to be preached at, take them to your church of choice or enroll them in one of the many christian grade school in this country. However, consider YOUR kids sitting in the same room, required to listen to a man promoting the phylosophies of Allah. . . . or a Wiccan High Priestess explaining about the Goddess! There should be no room in the public arena to force ideologies onto kids without the consent of their parents.

I know the left has no issue having an openly homosexual slanted speaker preaching to someone else’s kids while providing no truth about the high rate of disease in the homosexual community. Just check the CDC stats on what lifestyles/relationships are the highest risk for contracting AIDS/HIV and STD’s, men with men and bisexuals. If the schools want to promote homosexuality the facts should be presented also. The gay community does not care about kids or they would present all the facts. It has always amazed me that parents even let their children be influenced by gays involved in such abnormal relationships they cannot have children. I fully support Bradlee Dean the truth machine.

@DeavonReye Know what im sick of … people who don’t understand English. What is the definiton of religion? What is religion? Why are you trying to force the Atheist religon down people throats. That’s right, I did say Atheist Religon. EVERY person has a religion. If you understood english you would know that. Do you know for years states had there own state religion, and it was not against the constitution. Know your facts and learn a little bit about this thing called word definitions.

FWIW, Lydia, . . . I don’t think they should have a speaker coming in to talk about the pros of homosexuality either. If they want to talk about tolerence of various groups, maybe, but many of these issues should be personal and/or discussed at home. Parents just want schools to do their job for them.

Valkaneer, did you notice that you said “…states HAD their own…”. The nation, nor its states should be in the business of directing religious belief. They are there to make “business” decisions to keep the state running. They have no place in the religious arena.

And again, . . . schools have NO business having religiously based speakers preaching to students without consent of parents. I ask YOU, Valkaneer, . . . would you be okay with a Wiccan High Priestess addressing the wonderful and fulfilling aspects of Wicca to your kids? So, . . .be “sick of” whatever you want, but that is all on you . . . and you should learn to get over such things.

As for atheist [I'm agnostic, actually] being “a religion”, . . . does “not collecting stamps” make that a hobby? Does “not smoking” make that a habit? Just because you don’t understand the true definition of “atheism” doesn’t make your definition of it valid.

Also, on the erroneous notion that “atheism is a religion”, . . . it is a rejection of religion. If “rejection of a religion is . . a religion”, then “not playing football is a sport”. And absence of belief, such as atheism, is the same as the absence of belief in any number of things. It has no justifications, no creeds, no corollary obligations, no dependence upon unproven propositions, no faith, no rules or rituals or affirmations. . . . so it’s just silly to say that atheism is a religion.

The speaker wasn’t talking about religion so his religious ideology has nothing to do with his lecture.
Fact is that the only way kids can get both sides of the argument is to allow a pro-life and pro hetro speaker or teacher to talk about. And if that speaker or teacher is Christian that does’nt matter. Using your illogical stance any Christian teacher can be removed if they don’t tow the liberal ideology line.

I‘m not sure why my post didn’t get posted. . . I’ll have to re-enter it.

Smith, why are you so angry and using all caps? Do you think that makes your point more relevant? The theory of gravity has ample evidence to make it as a law, within our current knowledge. But it isn’t an actual law universally. As for what you would state as “atheist’s faith”, if you research talkorigins.org, you will find ample evidence for evolution based UPON actual science.
Anyone should find it interesting that it usually is the proponent of religion that DOES resort to personal attacks.

In fact, some laws, such as the law of gravity, can also be theories when taken more generally. The law of gravity is expressed as a single mathematical expression and is presumed to be true all over the universe and all through time. Without such an assumption, we can do no science based on gravity’s effects. But from the law, we derived the theory of gravity which describes how gravity works, what causes it, and how it behaves. We also use that to develop another theory, Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, in which gravity plays a crucial role. The basic law is intact, but the theory expands it to include various and complex situations involving space and time.

Smith, thank you for the non-caps.

First, let me point out that I am agnostic. I just understand where atheists are coming from. I can’t disprove that a god type being exists somewhere in the universe, but have seen no credible evidence for believing such an ideology. But such a stance doesn’t make me “religious” about it. I rather have no allegeance to any specific group or physolophy. But I must acknowledge the scientific data discovered which has shown evolution to be evidential and supported by several disciplines.

It is the same with the atheist, . . . and why atheism cannot be called a “religion based upon faith”. I cannot speak for every person who claims to be an atheist, . . . and not being one myself, but I do not “have faith” in that which is incapable of evidentiary support. I accept the accomplishments of those scientists who have shown examples of how evolutionary principles work, and have been demonstrated. Again, talkorigins.org is where you can find much information on this topic.

As for “destroying christianity”, that is not my position. I post my opinion. People choose their own paths.

Secondly, Planned Parenthood goes to schools to discuss STDs and contraception, things that, unlike some of the fundamentalist extremist psychos in the country have a problem with, the rest of the country knows that they are very much needed topics.
Finally – No, morons, creationism isn’t the alternative to evolution. One is based upon scientific discovery, fossil records, isotopic dating and the like…and the other is based upon the idea that a magic man in the clouds waved his hands, created everything in a week, that people lived for 900 years, talked to donkeys, and lived inside fish for 3 days. My point was “we” as humans are supposed to be a lil bit better than mere animals who act on pure self serving instinct and survival are we not? The #1 reason people have abortions is for convienence and selfishness (no money or time to have a baby-don’t want to be pregnant right now).
The reason we humans get rid of, kill, abort our children is because we want to do it quietly in the shadows where nobody can see or know about “it”. Because we all have a conscience and we know we are sinning against God. But ahhh God sees all and knows all and you can “Be sure your sin will find you out” (Num 32:23).
Animals were made for us to enjoy or use for food and they don‘t have a conscious the way we do so they aren’t trying to hide anything..they will do dumb stuff right in front of us.

I mean, if there was a serial killer in your town killing the local children and the police knew and did nothing about it, I’m pretty sure the people of the town would take it into their own hands. Yet, I see no equivalency with abortion. Typically, people talk about it but never actually take any action. In my mind, this fortunately means that even abortion opponents really don’t believe that abortion is equivalent to infanticide.

We didn’t have cell phones. Kids are SO spoiled nowadays, and the parents that perpetuate it should be fined for negligence or child abuse.

You are so right….we were shown actual footage of the Holocaust so that we could see what true evil looks like and our parents were supportive of it being taught. Our parents didn’t want to raise a bunch of clueless, pampered scaredy cats…they wanted us to know what the real world is all about, both sides of the issue, have the ability to make a TRULY informed decision….they wanted us to have common sense and not be led.

Goodness=NOT thinking t’s A-okay to murder babies with abortion all day long.
Goodness=Telling children the TRUTH that sex before marriage will harm them and having an abortion will actually make things worse NOT better.
Goodness= Being of good character, knowing what is right and wrong, and acting upon it by treating others as you would want to be treated.
I would want these people talking to my children. I would want them telling my kids not to have sex before marriage…not to have an abortion…and to be of good moral character.
If you think the opposite should be taught children than I believe that would be called bad parenting and possibly child abuse. What part of this do you disagree with? The fact that sodomy is bad? Or killing babies?

    Misleading title is misleading.

“Stanton said Cooper‘s decision is not related to Cooper’s recommendation that the district invite the band Junkyard Prophet to perform at last week’s assembly, and said the plan had been “in the works” for nearly a month.

“He simply wants to be a superintendent,” Stanton said, acknowledging that the timing of the announcement suggested there might be more to it.”

OMG! Someone speaking their mind/views and it offends someone! Of course Christians don’t have that right according to some of the “wise ones” on the Left. Freedom of speech is only effective if it defends the right to be offensive, in this case the graphic images of aborted fetuses. Even the reprehensible Westboro Baptist Church has the right to be as offensive as they are. This group as well. What is missing is the right of the students not to attend the assembly or to leave it if it becomes too much.
On the other side of the coin, many Christian groups could benefit from some of the wise words my grandmother used: “it is easier to catch flies with honey than it is with vinegar. It is much more difficult to scare people into accepting Christ than it is to love them into accepting Him.

You don’t bring in a bunch of failed rockers to teach school children anything. Having said that…there‘s absolutely no problem with properly credentialed adults being brought in to educate children on the pitfalls of promisciuty and the reality of abortions if they’re already being taught the other aspects of this. Furthermore, it‘s important to counter the propaganda campaign in our schools that’s attempting to make homosexuality “normal”(under the liberal newspeak….“bullying”. Much like “access” to liberals now means someone else has to pay for something they demand is a “right” of theirs). Of course..the children‘s age should be a consideration in what’s acceptable material to present to them, I cannot stress that enough. The reality is that over 55% of cases of HIV each year in this country are attributed to homosexual males. That’s an overrepresentation of 2,750%. Clearly and without a shred of doubt the sexual compulsions of homosexual males are counter to the well being of human beings. It is not unfair to say that there’s something intrinsically very wrong with homosexuality when faced with the stark evidence of the results of their sexual practices. Clearly, unequivocally the sexual practices and compulsions of homosexual males are not beneficial to the species. Taking that further..homosexuality is a dead end it takes the species nowhere- in fact, it hurts us.

SGINNC…liberals and their surrogates have to use euphemisms. Taking the humanity away from an unborn child makes killing that child a lot easier in their minds. So all of a sudden an unborn child becomes a “blastocyst” or “connective tissue” in this case. In this instance you have a lesbian asserting the term. For a lesbian to have a child either she had to have the child in a heterosexual relationship or a third party has to become involved. There’s a dynamic of detachment already in play. This is part of the bigger strategy by the left of eroding conscience from society. Part of that strategy is the removal of religion from prominence in society. Both of these adherences are what‘s preventing the left and it’s surrogate elements from supplanting the constitution with a piece of amorphous paper that any politician can change at a whim. “Far fetched” you say? Ginsberg was telling an Egyptian audience recently not to look to the U.S. constitution if they want a “plausible” model theirs. She echos the current leftist meme that the U.S. constitution is antiquated and not adequate for modern society. Obama himself has bemoaned the constraints the constitution places on him. My point? Conscience is something liberals and their surrogates have to erode both in what’s left in themselves and for everyone else. So using euphemisms like “connective tissue” become necessary.
