Are Local Media Ignoring Firebombing of Pro-Life Catholic School Bus in Illinois?

The local media in Rockford, Illinois, have been virtually silent about a firebomb attack on a Catholic school bus belonging to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy. While the details and fuzzy, here’s what we know: There’s extensive damage to a pro-life bus — a vehicle that is widely-known in the community for showcasing messages on its exterior that defend unborn babies and stand in opposition to abortion.

A blog called Pro-life Corner claims that the bus was firebombed on Friday evening (an employee at the Rockford Fire Department confirmed that authorities arrived at the scene around 3 a.m.). In a description of the damage, the blog reports that the attack’s impact was substantial, leaving broken windows, burned and charred seats and a plethora of other major blemishes.

“It has been speculated that this bombing of a pro-life Christian school bus is in retaliation for the closing of the Rockford abortion mill that is located not far from where the school bus was attacked,” the outlet writes.

This, of course, is not confirmed. The Blaze has reached out to Mike Rotolo, the investigator handling the case for the Rockford Fire Department, and is awaiting comment regarding the suspected motivation for the attack.

While Rotolo has not yet been reached, on Monday morning, the Rockford Fire Department confirmed the attack with The Blaze. An employee also said that when authorities arrived at the scene to put out the fire, a bottle was found nearby. This fact, teamed with footage of broken windows and damage inside of the vehicle, seems to corroborate the notion that a firebomb (i.e. molotov cocktail) was employed.

Pro-Life Corner goes on to accuse the Rockford Register Star, a newspaper in the region, of holding an anti-Christian bias, as the story of the firebombed bus was not immediately published by the paper — or by any other local outlets, for that matter. In the newspaper’s defense, the incident occurred early in the morning on Saturday and it may not yet be on reporters’ radar.

The blog also notes that the Rockford Register ironically published new details about a priest who crashed his car into a local abortion clinic 12 years ago on the day before this attack took place. If this attack on a pro-life bus goes unreported, it’s likely that people will see an inherent bias present in the stories the newspaper chooses to report (again, this story was reported before the attack and there is no indication that the Rockford Register won’t be covering the crime).

Interestingly, the newspaper did mention another attack on a local vehicle that occurred on Friday — a suspected arson involving a molotov cocktail. However, there is no indication at this point that the incidents concerning the car and the bus are connected.

The Blaze has reached out to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy for comment as well, but we have not yet heard back from administrators. We will report further details as they come in.

Update: Around 12:00 ET, the Rockford Register covered the incident, writing, in part:

Speculation was reported on an anti-abortion website that the fire may have been set as an anti-Catholic message or in retaliation against anti-abortion groups that campaigned to close the Northern Illinois Women’s Center in Rockford, which its owners closed earlier this year citing lack of support from the community, the political climate surrounding the abortion issue and the staffing challenges the clinic faced.

Bageanis said authorities may be able to determine why the fire was set if they can find who is responsible.

Rockford Fire Department investigator Mark Marinaro said there were no messages left at the scene and so far no evidence of a religious or political motivation.

Marinaro also said that although similar to another vehicle fire in the 600 block of North Winnebago Street a day earlier, there is no evidence the incidents are related.

      First of all, you are assuming that being Pro Life means Pro War. Life must be very simple in your world to be able to conclude this is the case. Second, defending the rights of the unborn, a civil right, can never be equated to another violent act, war, or attacking another person, etc. Any statement to this effect is a farce, diversion, an excuse to avoid really reviewing the right to life argument. If you have an argument, offer it. At least attempt to have some intellectual honesty. Defend your cause on its merits, not via subterfuge. I am always amazed that pro choice supporters cannot offer a valid intellectual argument, only indirect deflected justification. The same sort of arguments used throughout history to justify harming the weak.

      As usual, Liberals are unable to grasp the complexities of reality.
      Conservatives defend the right to life of infants, who are completely innocent of any wrongdoing and have no champions or defenders other than pro-life activists. Liberals see these unborn as “non-human” gobs of flesh, or dehumanize them by calling them to “parasites”, “fetuses” etc. and try to promote their killing by saying it is a “woman’s choice“ or ”right to privacy”, “stay out of our vaginas” and other absurd statements. In other words: liberals are doing to these unborn humans what slave owners did to Africans. Morally, you are on the same plane.

      As for wars, (and let’s not forget the death penalty): conservatives, like everyone else, would prefer to avoid any kind of violence, including war. War is not an objective. But the world being what it is, there is evil in the world, and at times those evil doers intend to kill and destroy, and must be dealt with. Sadly, we can’t just play rock,paper scissors with al Qaeda or the Taliban, can we? Surely you are intelligent enough to recognize that the only solution for the fascists in Europe was to beat them into submission. The same is true of al Qaeda, and their primary supporters, the Taliban.

      As for the death penalty: I think conservatives would be willing to make a deal. If Liberals will agree to ban abortions, we will agree to ban the death penalty.

      @Constitutionaleng Interesting babble or a response. The point is for you to defend your position. The central argument by Pro Lift groups is that abortion is killing the unborn child. So a comparisons to other activities related to killing human beings seems to be right on the money. Either killing is wrong or it is right. It is the justifications and rationalizations employed relative to killing whether within war or under capital punishment which weaken the Pro Life stance. The only defense on needs to provide for the Pro Choice stance is that it has been reviewed and decided by the Supreme Court and is the law of the land. Roe v. Wade is the best we can expect from the government and it reflects the overriding truth. That being that your beliefs, opinions and civil rights end at the tip of the woman’s nose…. cause that‘s where her’s begin.

      Can we agree on something? Pro-choice cannot possibly consider a fetus a human life. Because if they did it would be psychotic to consider abortion ok. That’s the real argument: “Is a fetus a human life?” That’s hard to define, for me at least. Full set of human DNA? That’s tricky. Each cell in my hand has a full set of human DNA and I’m not committing mass murder whenever I cut myself on accident. How about “Has potential to become human”? Is that human life? Well if that’s the case every egg and sperm are given the same protection as a regular human. Heck, get the appropriate chemicals together and under that definition you’ve got a human because the chemicals could be arranged into a human. That’s clearly nonsense as definitions go. “A self sustaining entity”? No fetuses don’t do that. Although if it were a late term abortion that survived for some time you could slap em with involuntary manslaughter under that definition I suppose. “Possessing a degree of intelligence”? Infants would be considered animals under that definition.

      That’s really the problem with the pro-life movement. They have a strong definition of life that suits their goals but lack a substantive explanation for that definition other than “X said so.” X typically being the bible or a representative there of like a priest. Perhaps someone could give me a good logical or scientific reason to consider a fertilized egg a human life? Its one of the issues where I legitimately fence sit.

      Pro abortion is just an attempt to “Sweeping the dirt under the rug.” because a living child would be a lifetime reminder that one has abandoned one of the major responsibilities of being an adult.

      I live near Rockford, Il and have seen the abortion clinic that closed and it took many years before the clinic was ever inspected and when it was, it was fined and closed. It was an awful looking dump. The Rockford Star has a poor history of reporting pro-life views and includes many left leaning writers in their regular newspaper and the surrounding area as well.

      1- You’re not following the logic of your own argument. If a moral equivalency exists between abortion and war… And if opposition to one means you must oppose the other… Then conservatives could easily turn the question around on you: “How can you be anti-war yet pro choice on abortion?”

      babies aren’t being murdered. babies cry, they count in the census, they have a name, and they breath air. feel free to argue that they are a form of human life – i disagree, but it’s a discussion worth having. until then, the two sides will never be able to have a serious discussion because the anti-abortion crowd it too convinced that their way is the only way. and i know where this comes from – the idea of a soul derived from your deeply religious beliefs. because you believe this you will never be convinced that you could be wrong. sad, IMO.

The fire investigators haven’t concluded anything yet. The blaze knows it will get a lot of you angry just because it has something to do with abortion.       I think you are incorrect to a point. The Blaze is not like MSBC (gossip rag) and clearly stated in the article that no information of cause or possible motive are known yet. Unlike your friends in the MSM the Blaze does not make up information with the intent to incite. Most likely you did not fully read the article and got the Blaze mixed up with MSM outlets, who do not fact check. Those are the true lunatics as they do great damage to people and society.

      This was likely a device of some sort given the location of the explosion. It’s away from most of the bus electronics in the front and the engine which might provide heat enough for a fire. The seat destroyed seem to be in middle of the bus next to that broken window. I think if you just realize it’s possible it was an anti catholic who might have done it, we might agree that there isn’t enough proof.

    They did mention another car being bombed.They claim there is no connection.It might be that it is. They were requested not to report on the bus to protect the investigation.Remember folks any cause has the potential for lone nuts to act.Its also possible for a lone nut to attack and deflect on a cause.
    If nothing else is heard in a few days I will start agreeing with you that its a bias in reporting.

    Both sides using violence is wrong.They both should be prosecuted if found quilty of crimes to the other.

      No, the difference is that “pro-life” extremists attack PEOPLE. Killing abortion providers, bombing clinics while they are open, etc. These pro-choice extremists (if the case ends up being tied to them, and not a ploy to get attention. I don’t put anything past these groups after they sent their activists into abortion clinics to pretend to be trying to get sex-selective abortions…) only damaged property.
