Pro-Life Group Claims Planned Parenthood Clinic Didn’t Call 911 to Report Botched Abortion That Killed Woman

Last month, TheBlaze told you about the tragic story surrounding Tonya Reaves, a 24-year-old woman who died after receiving an abortion at a Chicago-area Planned Parenthood clinic. Now, in the wake of her death, one pro-life group is demanding that a criminal investigation be launched after alleging that clinic staffers failed to call 911 to report the complications.

As previously reported, Reaves passed away from a hemorrhage and complications as a result of what CBS Chicago called a “dilation and evacuation.” According to the medical examiner, the pregnancy, itself, was a contributing factor in Reaves’ demise, but the details initially seemed murky. The death is being ruled an accident.

Operation Rescue, a non-profit that works to end abortion, is taking aim at Planned Parenthood, claiming negligence and a failure to alert emergency workers of the botched abortion. The organization purportedly confirmed with the Office of Emergency Management and Communications for the City of Chicago that only one call was made to 911 on July 20, the day of the incident.

However, this call allegedly had nothing to do with Reaves, who perished later that evening (the abortion was performed around 11 a.m.). The Christian Post has more about the details surrounding Reaves’ treatment and death in the wake of the botched abortion:

It was not until 4:30 p.m. when a fire department ambulance took the 24-year-old woman to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Doctors performed an ultrasound, then another D&E procedure but more problems arose. Another ultrasound was performed at which point they discovered a perforation. At 10:12 p.m. an “uncontrollable bleed” was discovered when she was taken back to surgery.

Reaves was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m.

“This information shows gross negligence in the way Planned Parenthood managed Reaves’ medical emergency. Delays in getting her the care she needed were intentional,” said Cheryl Sullenger, senior policy advisor for the group. “It crosses the line into what is likely criminal conduct.”

Operation Rescue got a hold of the single 911 call. It can be heard here. In it, there is no mention of Reaves’ condition. Instead, the caller reports an incident involving a 16-year-old girl who was purportedly assaulted by her mother. As a result of these factors, Operation Rescue is advocating for a criminal investigation into the clinic’s operations.

The organization has also put together a video timeline of Reaves’ plight to further show what it believes is carelessness on the part of Planned Parenthood. Watch it, below:

Operation Rescue isn’t the only group looking to clear up the details that unfolded that day. Reaves’ family, too, has been seeking answers.

“We were born the same day. She was my other half,” Toni, Reaves twin sister, told CBS Chicago. “It happened so fast. She was just fine one day and then the next day she was gone. We’re just trying to figure out what happened.”

Last month, TheBlaze also noted that Planned Parenthood of Illinois CEO Carole Brite responded to Reaves’ demise, writing in a statement that the organization is “shocked and saddened” after learning about the incident. “Our hearts go out to the loved ones of this patient,” she continued.

Beyond that, Brite made it clear that the organization wouldn’t be sharing further details about the death. She continued:

“While legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies. Planned Parenthood of Illinois cares deeply about the health and safety of each and every patient. We do not publicly discuss private patient matters and we follow HIPAA laws that forbid the disclosure of patient information.”

While some are holding Planned Parenthood responsible for not reporting the incident, there are no details regarding when, in fact, Reaves started experiencing complications. It is entirely possible that she was already home or had left the clinic when the situation turned dire.

Pending a legal drama unfolds, some of these more uncertain elements were certainly come to light.

    Now the argument will be, “this was a rare case”.
    Meanwhile the other government agency, PETA, which was heralded by the left as the sole arbiter of the protection of animals proudly maitains an 87% euthanasia statistic.

      This is “a rare case”, so it’s excusable (argument of the libs). However, we can’t execute murderers and rapist because there is always the “rare case” some will be found wrongfully guilty, so, set the rapists and murderers free to rape and murder “many” more innocents to prevent the “rare” incident of “maybe” executing an “innocent”.     i dont know why this young woman didnt just shove a coat hanger up her womb like the other girls did in the 50s to stop this pregnancy.. or lose her mind with the turmoil in her mind and just dump this unwanted baby in the trash or a dumpster..maybe she should have drank some poisoned tea to end this .. she was clearly wrong to opt for what should have been a safe procedure.. maybe this was the only choice she had in her life.. and well since she is the one to own her body and mind it really was her choice to do ..i dont condone abortion but i really dont want to step back in time to a time where woman had to do things like this .. my heart goes out to this family that lost a sister .. a daughter, and a grand child or another family member..

We need to get back to when it was a shame to get pregnant out of marriage and a shame to go on welfare. Most of all we need to stop paying women to have babies.     Chicago-area Planned Parenthood clinic. What part of that phrase says that PP is not involved? The clinic is contracted by PP to perform the abortions. They referred the woman to this clinic. It does not matter they did not perform the abortion themselves. So all you trying to exonerate PP, stop you will lose. That would be like not holding a drug dealer responsible who sold a person drugs and they died from those purchased drugs. The drug dealer has culpability.

    This is very tragic that can’t be undone. This is why abortions should NEVER be allowed. Had this women been encouraged to keep the child or give it up for adoption, she would be alive today. How ironic she as black. I guess Margaret Sanger’s genocide of black babies is coming to fruition and the black community is complacent while this happens.

      This is a completely unfounded assertion. We have no idea if she would have survived a pregnancy.

      I don’t see how many weeks along she was, but the mortality rate for abortions is:
      “The risk of death associated with abortion increases with the length of pregnancy, from one death for every one million abortions at or before eight weeks to one per 29,000 at 16-20 weeks-and one per 11,000 at 21 or more weeks.”

      The mortality rate for maternal death in the US is 11 in 100,000. This means that even at 21 weeks or more, women are more likely to die in childbirth than through an abortion. The difference is small, of course; but it’s rare enough that this story is a tragic occasion due to the infrequency of its occurrence.

      I am NOT advocating abortion here (ugh, GOD NO). But it is not true to say “she would have survived childbirth.”

    3) This clinic might have been on a directory this woman received when SHE DECIDED to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.

      Are you sure about this? From my understanding, they are forbidden to use federal funding for abortion-related procedures (such as paying doctors, buying the equipment used for abortions, etc), but each individual PP clinic has the option to either provide abortions (if they meet state regulations) or just refer people.

      See above. From my understanding, it is up to the clinic if they want to perform abortions, give references to non-PP abortion clinics, or decline entirely.

      I would just like to see some references to back this up. Looking at their website, it distinctly says:

      Medical procedures that end pregnancy
      Safe and effective
      Available from many Planned Parenthood health centers
      Costs about $300–$950 in the first trimester”

      This is 95% incorrect, as PP’s own annual report (which you can easily find online) shows that abortions and abortion referrals make up 3% of all their work.

      You’re likely quoting Jon Kyl (R-AZ), who was ROASTED for this lie last year. Don’t remember the “Not intended to be a factual statement” backtrack that was the gag reel for a couple of weeks? You also might be quoting Hatch, who use a 95% figure in February… and backed off later saying he “misspoke.”

      Please use actual facts to back your arguments. Lying makes you look dishonest and unconfident in your stance.

    How did the ambulance know to arrive? And where did it arrive at: PP, or the woman’s home?

    No offense to the group, but I’d say the burden of proof is on them. I didn’t see answers to either of those questions: in fact, as the article itself says, “While some are holding Planned Parenthood responsible for not reporting the incident, there are no details regarding when, in fact, Reaves started experiencing complications. It is entirely possible that she was already home or had left the clinic when the situation turned dire.”

    Should be looked into, but if an ambulance did in fact show up, I think it would be wrong to say authorities were not contacted. Perhaps they called the hospital directly, or the fire department… but it seems the group has not looked into those possibilities.

    Remember, America – Democrat Margaret Sanger started Planned Parenthood because she and fellow Dems believed people of darker skin were inferior to whites. Sanger used Planned Parenthood to cut back on the births of babies born to darker skinned women.
    Democrat Sanger also spoke to the women’s groups of the Democrat-founded K K K. The K K K was started by Dems to hunt down blacks and Republicans.
    The truth of the Democratic Party is disgusting.
    And, because of this, another unborn human is dead, as well as the mother.

      Sad to say, she is another victim of the “Government Plantation”. Planned Parenthood is just a legal infanticide mill. Natives in many countries around the world used to practice child sacrifice to appease their gods. Planned Parenthood is nothing more than a modern version of that practice. Planned Parenthood appeases the gods of government, the gods of free sexuality and the gods of liberalism.

      My heart goes out to her family. She is just another victim of the modern morality promoted by progressive Democrats and Republicans alike.

      She addressed a group in NJ once, as she address MANY diverse groups
      She found them so scary she never accepted other invitation from the KKK.
