Komen VP Resigns After Planned Parenthood Defunding Debacle

A high-ranking official resigned Tuesday from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast-cancer charity after a dispute over whether the group should give funding to Planned Parenthood, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.

Karen Handel, the charity’s vice president for public policy, told Komen officials that she supported the move to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. She said the discussion started before she arrived at the organization and was approved at the highest levels of the charity.

“I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it,” Handel said in her letter. “I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve.”

Handel said in the letter that the now-abandoned policy was fully vetted by the Komen organization. Its board did not raise any objections when it was presented with the proposed policy in November, Handel said.

Handel had supported a decision that Komen announced last week to exclude Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest provider of abortions, from future grants for breast-cancer screenings because it was under government investigation. The charity cited a probe launched by a Florida congressman.

The breast cancer charity furiously backpedaled from its decision after it created a three-day firestorm of criticism. Members of Congress and Komen affiliates accused the group’s national leadership of “bending to pressure from anti-abortion activists.” Komen’s founder and CEO, Nancy Brinker, has denied this charge.

According to Life News, Komen released a statement from founder Susan Brinker accepting Handel’s resignation, saying, “Today I accepted the resignation of Karen Handel, who has served as Senior Vice President for Policy since April 2011. I have known Karen for many years, and we both share a common commitment to our organization’s lifelong mission, which must always remain our sole focus. I wish her the best in future endeavors.”

“Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s mission is the same today as it was the day of its founding: to find a cure and eradicate breast cancer,” Brinker writes. “We owe no less to our partners, supporters and, above all, the millions of people who have been and continue to be impacted by this life-threatening disease. We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted, but we cannot take our eye off the ball when it comes to our mission.”

“To do this effectively,” Brinker added, “We must learn from what we’ve done right, what we’ve done wrong and achieve our goal for the millions of women who rely on us. The stakes are simply too high and providing hope for a cure must drive our efforts.”

Until Tuesday, Handel had publicly kept silent about her role in the dispute.

“Neither the decision nor the changes themselves were based on anyone’s political beliefs or ideology,” Handel said in the letter. Rather, both were based on Komen’s mission and how to better serve women, as well as a realization of the need to distance Komen from controversy.

In her resignation letter, Handel said the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood was long a concern to Komen officials.

However, anonymous sources claim that the “staunchly anti-abortion vice president for public policy“ was ”the main force behind the decision to defund Planned Parenthood and the attempt to make that decision look nonpolitical,” according to the Huffington Post.

“Karen Handel was the prime instigator of this effort, and she herself personally came up with investigation criteria,” a source, who requested anonymity for professional reasons, told the HuffPo. “She said, ‘If we just say it’s about investigations, we can defund Planned Parenthood and no one can blame us for being political.’”

Brinker, in an interview with MSNBC last week, said Handel didn’t have a significant role in the policy change.

Handel, a Republican, ran for Georgia governor in 2010, winning an endorsement from former vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Handel then lost a primary runoff to former Georgia Congressman Nathan Deal, who won the general election.

Throughout the campaign, Handel emphasized her postion on abortion.

“I am staunchly and unequivocally pro-life. I believe in the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life, and I will be a pro-life governor who will work tirelessly to promote a culture of life in Georgia,” Handel said while campaigning in 2010.

“I believe that each and every unborn child has inherent dignity, that every abortion is a tragedy, and that government has a role, along with the faith community, in encouraging women to choose life in even the most difficult of circumstances…. since I am pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood.”

the komen foundation should be prosecuted for taking money under false pretenses[fraud].neither abortion, contraception or sex ed has any thing to do with breast cancer. Any doctor can give someone a referal for a mamogram-no exam needed.I don’t trust any charity now to be what they say they are[except jimmy carters' habitat for humanity cause he has the integrity to stand up for the occupied palestinians even as he gets reviled for it].I’d rather give money to homeless appearing people where at least i know the money i give to them is for them. This charity raised billions by lieing to people telling us this was about breast cancer.PP did some referals so komen could say they were involved with cancer. What an evil scam-people thinking they‘re helping fight cancer when they’re helping murder innocent living human fetuses .Outrageous.

i don’t know what an abortion has to do with screening or breast cancer..
HOWEVER, it all seems to be a scam…our medical community is no where near a cure for breast cancer.
..it’s obviously too profitable to keep women ill and dying..why should they find a cure?
Where does all the money go?…no one will tell us, but it’s sure not found a cure in all these years..
I think SBK will have less and less money to donate to PP..

.also, Planned Parenthood.. WHERE , state/city, are the most abortions preformed, and on what ethinic group? also, for what reason??? birthcontrol, life or death?…why???
People need to know where there money is going i not to the research for breast cancer..

Wrong Rose_Troll. Studies have shown an increase in the risk of developing breast and/or cervical cancers from oral contraceptive use. While the risk of uterine/ovarian cancers are down due to the use of those same contraceptives, Komen does not fund research to cure uterine/ovarian cancer. Get a clue, please, before posting your drivel.

As far as I’m concerned, they were in the abortion business and begged, borrowed and stole from us gullible women who thought it was for Breast Cancer cure, while all the time they were giving vast amounts of money to PP who’s main job is abortion. They might say differently, but when they are responsible for many thousands of abortions each year, they were making a living off us gullible people supporting the wrong cause. Every time someone defunds them, the liberals get all up in arms about what a great service PP is. If they are so great, why can’t they make enough money in charitable donations? Why should they need the government hand outs, and the support of better organizations? Surely, if they are so wonderful, liberals would be throwing *their own* money at PP.

I don‘t think it’s capitalism to bully an organization to continue a business relationship, when said organization doesn’t agree with the policies of the business partner. On top of that, the partner then smears the organization and covers the media with false accusations as to the reasons why said organization stopped the relationship, at which point, the organization has no choice but to cowtow to the demands of the partner and the misguided public.

Yeah. That’s capitalism. Where did you learn economics again, Clive?

Research is revealing more and more that women having abortions are at a greater risk for breast cancer; which explains breast cancer showing up in much younger women since roe v wade in 1973.

Also, women ARE NOT BEING ADVISED of the breast cancer risk associated with abortions.

And yet, Komen has been in bed with Planned Parenthood and I‘m sure I’m not the only one who wasn’t aware of their association with PP.

Komen Has Lost My Family’s Support As Well.

God Bless You, Karen Handel, For Standing Up!

Hopefully, from the Komen fall out, there will arise an organization truly interested in finding a breast cancer cure; an organization who will not betray its supporters by forming alliances with the devil.

Removing Yourself From PP Was The Right Thing, Komen. You Should NEVER Have Been Using My Komen Donations To Support PP In the First Place.

      @Grassroots:

There is no link between abortion and the increased risk of breast cancer. There IS, however, an increased risk involved with long-term oral contraceptive use. Which PP provides for free, in most cases. I would think Komen would see that, and stop their funding legitimately, although, Komen really isn’t any better, since the advocate for mammorgrams… as if getting doses of radiation through your breast tissue doesn’t contribute to that increase in risk. People don’t die from cancer…. they die from the cancer treatments. Clues, anyone? I have clues for sale… People really need to get one, or even a few. Now that’s capitalism!

Planned Parenthood’s Breast Cancer screenings are exactly what a woman can do for herself, or get done by her Primary Care Physician at a normal Physical. So them saying they are so big on this is ludicrous. If there is anything found, they send you to a place where you can get a Mammogram, same as your PPC would.

They do not do Mammograms as they want folks to believe.

because, apparently, the only right that matters to the Ruling Class is the right to kill babies-it supersedes the right to worship (the 0baMaocare attack on the Catholic Church) and the right of an organization to decide how it’s going to spend its own money…i keep hearing the word ‘choice’ thrown about…but the only ‘choice’ that is respected by the Left is the ‘right to kill’…look at Palin; a conservative, who could reasonably be expected to garner the usual disdain from the Left-but she chose life for Trig-and that ENRAGED the Left-similarly, Tim Tebow’s mother; she chose life, and was vilified by the Left-and check the Left blogosphere re: Santorum’s wife, and you’ll find similar vitriol-the Left‘s message of ’choice’ is this: “KILL that ‘inconvenient, less than perfect infant’-or face the consequences!”

Planned Parenthood’s main focus is providing primary and preventative health care to under served women. The so-called pro-lifers, who are really not that pro-life, or any more pro-life than those of us who believe in reproductive choice, have been spreading LIES about PP for decades. I hate to tell you this Encinom, but her politics had nothing to do with it-and you know it. S he had a bout of conscience. What most prople is that there are 37 separate studies, including one by Planned Parenthood proving that abortion causes breast cancer. Those studies show that if a woman has more than one abortion, she will get cancer. If she comes from a family with a history of breast cancer, and has one abortion, she will get cancer. It would be counterproductive for Komen to continue giving to an organization whose main service causes the very disease that they are trying to find a cure for.
As to PP’s little tantrum over being cut off, they ignore that fact that Komen is under no obligation to fund them. Any private person , company or charity can use their resources as they see fit.
Speking of that, I’m going to recommend to my wife that she cease suypporting tha race for the cure until they stop funding baby murder, inc.

What this should tell many organizations is to steer clear from even thinking about donating money to planned parenthood because if you decide to withdraw funding you will be tarred and feathered by the liberals in Congress and the media.

I will never donate to Komen’s group. I will donate directly to Cancer clinics and to Cancer research and not to some charity like Komen who gives money to clinics that in turn fund abortions.

‘She has since stated that MADD “has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned … I didn’t start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving”‘

Komen wasnt started to support ‘glanned misparenthood’s’ slaughter of children for the “health of the mother” it was for solving/helping breast cancer sufferers. I applaud her decision but personally, I think people need to start being the “mole” in these groups and start collecting and preparing to whistle-blow when they start to contradict what they claim.

Agree, and what is most laughable about that argument is that they think that most women who have abortions are poor, ignorant, and incapable of raising a child or don’t know enough to put it up for adoption. So the best option is to abort it. If that isn’t a Margaret Sanger eugenics justification for abortion, I don’t know what is… They support the right to choose because they assume most women who engage in unprotected sex are stupid or, that is that argument I have heard most often. This conversation is about consensual sex, not rape or incest, which, if the health of the mother and baby are hanging in the balance is a last resort reason for doing the procedure. This is a horribly complicated topic and, no matter what any of us say, it seems to trivialize it.

Can’t argue with you on the fact that conservatives give more time and money to charity. But no one is out there to make sure a mother has the resources to take care of a child, good works or not. The majority of women that get abortion have a child and they feel they cannot take care of another one. A sad fact.

This Republican primary has made the poor the whipping boy for an economy destroyed by the banking and corporate elites. It has been disgraceful.

During a recession, of course, there will be more Americans needing food stamps. Republicans say it like it is a shameful thing. . 69% of food stamps go to children. elderly and disabled. Who would want this group to go hungry. And Santorum saying poor people are fat implying that they eat plenty when every rational thinker realizes starchy fat foods are all the poor can afford. Fruit are off the menu.

In a time when everything is increasing in price to cut housing, childcare etc for the poor seems like not caring too much.

As for women (and men) that have unprotected sex being stupid -who thinks that? We are sexual beings. Sex happens. I Q has nothing to do with it. Usually it is religious hang-ups that keeps a person form using contraception.
