Pro-Union Protesters Found Guilty in Wis. — but Wait Until You Hear Their Defense

The MacIver Institute in Wisconsin has been closely following the pro-union protests that started in that state last year. And it’s done a great job of bringing to light interesting stories (remember the fake doctor notes?). And it hasn’t disappointed with one of its latest videos, which takes you inside the courtroom as protesters try and mount a defense for why they disobeyed police in August and refused to vacate the capitol.

The video below does a good job of laying out the story, so I won’t bore you by repeating details. But what I will say is this: the protesters were eventually found guilty ($200 fine plus court costs), and just wait until you hear their defense.

In a nutshell, the protesters claim that when police told the group to vacate the building because it was closing, the cops never told each one individually. They also believe that police would have been able to do their job (close the capitol) even if the protesters were left to sit in the rotunda. The money line comes when one of them claims he would have eventually gotten bored and left.

      @Madmilo, that was my first thought as well. For these people to constantly bash the Constitution and then use it as their first line of defense. They do the same thing with capitalism.       The first amendment gives citizens the right to peacefully assemble and petition the government. At the point any protester refuses a lawful order by an authorized individual (like a police officer) their rights to demonstrate is over. Municipalities have every right to issue permits for demonstrations. This is a good idea for everyone. Spontaneous demonstrations are fine but must be peaceful and law abiding. These protestors were rightly convicted.

      My sons Social Studies teacher told my son (and the class) that she doesn’t think the 2nd Amendment still applies and the only reason we are free is because we have the right to free speech! My son stood up and said “The only reason we are free is because the Federal Government is petrified of the 2nd Amendment and the US Military!” I taught my son well!

      The first ammendment doesn’t give you the right to do anything you want to whomever you want or where ever you want. More and more people like this who hate the Constitution are hiding behind it improperly. What about the cops? They don’t have a right to end their shift and go see their families?? Freedom of speech and expression does not mean that you can infringe upon other people’s rights! Plus, despite my total dislike and disrespect for every one of those protestors, I literally have never seen so many truly stupid people try to push a cause.       Considering my family signed the U.S Constitution I have real problem when someone tries to destroy it and use it at the same time.

      um.. i’m a Union Member by FORCE.. Don’t lump all of us in.. I pay SEIU $90 per month to slide that money over to Liberal Progressive Candidates. Some(notice the word some) employees are good hard working people. Majority are worthless. Our problem is the Union itself. SEIU is very powerful and has the President in their pocket.       I wouldn’t put that label on all union members. These are from Government unions not trade unions. The leaders of these unions (and at times Trade Unions) are the ones that use their membership for political gain. See what happens if they revolt against their leaders. They will be taken out with the trash as no longer being useful. The people are just sheep being led to the slaughter and then replaced by more sheep. All Government Unions should be banned. How can it be any good if the Government negotiates with itself for a contract? Some of these liberals should have learned from their loser parents who back in the 60′s & 70′s, sat down and shouted, “Hell no we won’t go”. And in the end were forced to comply anyway. I believe the convictions were correct. Of course just like a bad penny, “They’ll be back”.

      @Gonzo – I’m a bit confused. How can you defend individual liberty (something I certainly cherish) that requires personal responsibility (and I subscribe to that) while at the same time assert collective responsibility for act of dubious veracity?

      If you don’t subscribe to identity politics, as I imagine you don’t, then what Adam and Eve supposedly did near the beginning of creation, or what Romans and Jews supposedly did near the beginning of the common era cannot be my or your personal responsibility.

    Are these people actually teachers??!! If I were the prosecuting attorney, I would have asked the girl if she believed her class should only follow her instructions in class if she asked each one individually to do so and if it relieved them of an obligation to do so if she only asked them as a group to follow an instruction. Some creative kid in her own class should try to organize that little idea. What tools.

These “people” when younger were not given the advantage of a framework on how to study to get the most out of what he/she needs to know, including other ancelarry items to fill out the small details. They were enslaved, early-on by parents who stuffed them in school to get them out-of-the-way for a while…all mamals teach their offspring the framework of their life from the “egg-hatching“ until they ”leave the nest”…from being-born to goeing out on their own….Humans??…Haa HaaHaa HaaHaaaaaa.. .

    Having spent most of my adult life in law enforcement I can tell you that court can sometimes be funnier than any comedy variety show on TV. Furthermore, these idiots had attorneys and still pulled these stunts in court! Absolutely laughable.

      I once owned a resturant in CT and I was ticketed for not shoveling the sidewalk.
      I appeared at court early and sat there as they brought people in chained
      together. As they started trying these people they would call out their offenses,
      Armed Robbery, assault and battery, attempted murder. Then they got to me
      and the announement “failure to shovel the sidewalk” the whole courtroom
      was in stiches even the guys in chains. When the judge finished laughing
      he thanked me for the entertainment and asked if I could afford $15.

      HAPP77, That one is really funny. You apparently made their day. Should have asked if part of that chain gang could come shovel your walk. What I have seen have been some of our so called most intelligent people who are lawyers do some of the most stupid things or say such stupid things. I worked with one guy years ago who had only some limited college, but was just one of those people who is a natural when it comes to public speaking and was just completely adept with the English language. I’ve seen him eat one lawyer after another on the stand. Another guy was a former Marine A4 and F4 aircraft radar technician with a couple of tours in Vietnam. Woe be unto any lawyer who did not know him but tried to pull some crap with him on a radar speeding ticket. He’s cracked up the whole courtroom including the judge. But, I have to admit that I have seen some cops screw up laughably too. One particular incident has been burned into my mind for over thirty years that I will not into.

    $200 fine? How many would have to be arrested to recover lost state funds? It costs more than $200 to process the POS’s!!! “Court Costs” SHOULD include the price of incarceration too!!!!

      Thought the same thing……the little punks wanted their 15 minutes of rebellion fame and the guilty verdict is a badge of honor to them. I doubt they will even pay the $200 fine. If it gets paid, I’m sure it will come from the unions and other promoters behind these staged events.

      The problem in Wisconsin is the artificially high number of public sector workers. Toss in the welfare recipients and the slugs and the OWS-types and you quickly arrive at a conclusion that the state is on an unsustainable course. The state’s taken a nose-dive in terms of quality of product it produces over the past 20 years.

      this is noway near wisconsin’s finest. i live in wisconsin we had 16 years of tommy thompson, and 8 years of doyle. tommy got and kept this state humming, in his first 6 months in office doyle detroyed it all. guess which was R and which one D?
      walker comes in and his first 6 months he clears out and cleans up the mess left of the state, and takes us from $3.6Bil defecit, to a $360mil surplus anf they want his head for that???
      you know what this whole thing is?? the pay me first movement. pay me first, give me my benefits first. everyone else to the back of the line. the libs had 8 years of controling things here and destoyed of private businesses and workforce and are pissed they lost control before they could destroy the rest of wisconsin.
