Progressive Claim: Glenn Beck is ‘Redefining Whiteness’

What sets members of the tea party movement apart from their neighbors?  The media has speculated that religion and political ideology may play a significant role, but one progressive group is claiming tea partiers are just “more comfortable with white privilege” than other Americans.

Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, an ordained minister, theology professor and senior fellow at the liberal Center for American Progress (CAP), points to a recent survey which found 80 percent of self-described tea party members are non-Hispanic or white.   According to Thislethwaite, this data suggests whites in America are nervous about the changing racial landscape in America and are drawn to TV and radio personality Glenn Beck who she claims is on a mission to “redefine whiteness.”

“I can generalize and say those attracted to the tea party are more comfortable with white privilege as a value and believe that leveling the playing field for minorities is not the business of government,” Thistlethwaite said during a panel discussion Tuesday at the Brookings Institution, a left-leaning think tank in Washington.

Thistlethwaite also suggested that this tea party “value” runs contrary to the beliefs of Evangelical Christians who work in the U.S. and abroad to help people in need.

“Everybody knows 2050 is projected to be the year when racial ethnic minority Americans become the majority of the population,” Thistlethwaite said. “MSNBC reported in March that 2010 may be the tipping point year where more racial ethnic minority babies are born than those identified as white.

“So there is a racial shift in this landscape, and I think the fact that we have an 80 percent reporting of ‘white’ as the racial category of the tea party, you cannot discount the role of race in interpreting this data,” Thistlethwhite said.

“And I think one thing that I observed, certainly, and in talking to people was…a lot of expressed anxiety and repressed fear: People said, ‘I am afraid. I’m afraid of this. I’m afraid of that. I’m afraid of other things.’ She said these anxieties are part of the appeal of people like Glenn Beck.

“So when you read that vocabulary and you let this data talk to you, one of the things it was saying to me, certainly in some public figures, like Glenn Beck, this appears to be obviously true – this is an attempt to redefine whiteness as victimization and to see whiteness as the object of racial discrimination,” Thistlethwaite said.

E.J. Dionne, Brookings senior fellow and panel moderator, also weighed in when a reporter from New Yorker magazine asked the panel to characterize the tea party movement as either a new phenomenon or a resurgence of the conservatism from the Old South a la Jesse Helms:

“If you look at their language, their references to the Constitution, their attitudes toward the peril the country faces, as I see it, I think in so many ways, I think the Tea Party is the old right with a cable network, a group of talk shows, social networking, some rather wealthy donors, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck,” Dionne said.

Wait a minute! The demographics of the whole country lists whites at 75% anyways. So keeping that ratio of whites to any and all groups is basically the same as is represented as the whole country. Talk about reaching for straws here. Liberals aren’t smart, liberals aren’t misguided, and they definitely aren’t victims……they are just STUPID! I mean it couldn’t possibly mean that we absolutely hate the leftist policies out there…god forbid! Also, why do the ******** out there say the “evil, racist bigots” of the upper class are against Obama when it’s the middle class that hates his rhetoric and policies.

I think Survivor should take a large group of Liberals to find out who can live off of the island. I nominate Janeane Garofulo, Bill Maher, Al Sharpton, Joy Behar and Rosie O’Donnell. THAT would be the highest rated show ever. I call it Progressive Island!

They are collectivist/statist/socialist/fascist progressive ‘liberals’. Not true liberals.

True liberalism is classical liberalism. I suggest using different labels for better accuracy.

“I use throughout the term ‘liberal’ in the original, nineteenth-century sense in which it is still current in Britain. In current American usage it often means very nearly the opposite of this. It has been part of the camouflage of leftish movements in this country, helped by muddleheadedness of many who really believe in liberty, that ‘liberal’ has come to mean the advocacy of almost every kind of government control.

I am still puzzled why those in the United States who truly believe in liberty should not only have allowed the left to appropriate this almost indispensable term but should even have assisted by beginning to use it themselves as a term of opprobrium. This seems to be particularly regrettable because of the consequent tendency of many true liberals to describe themselves as conservatives.”

Exactly. America is about 80% white, so all this number says is that the Tea Party accurately reflects the racial composition of America.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_ethnicity_in_the_United_States

“White Americans … are the racial majority, with an 80% share of the U.S. population, per official estimates from the Population Estimates Program (PEP), or 75% per the American Community Survey (ACS).”

The *REAL* story is that non-whites are Tea Partiers in statistically normal numbers, which puts the lie to all the racist charges.

The satanically evil liberals confirm yet again their dark unwholesomeness by trying to utterly reverse the meaning of the statistics.

No mention of the fact that whites were nearly 65% of the population in 2010? No mention of the statistical differences of minorities being conservative vs. liberal? How about voter turnout by race, and whites being the highest percentage of any group who votes, and are therefore more active in political groups in general?

Take a look at thier actual topline questionnaire, and see how “thorough” thier survey really was.

Skep, the answer is simple and long. Black people had legitimate problems in this society since late 1880′s. Communists exploited this for over a hundred years and have now “programmed” the Black community to look to Big Federal government as the ONLY solution to both achieving and maintaining equality. These memes are passed on from generation to generation. Because of this, Black people will mindlessly follow any Black politician who promises MORE government intervention in their lives because they believe that that without Big Government, they WILL be oppressed again. It is emotion, not logic, that is driving their behavior. Until Black people restore their culture to that which helped them in the past; the culture that placed education as a real priority; the culture that refused to take a second seat to racists; the culture that built our own universities, greek organizations, churches, businesses; we will forever feel inferior to the mainstream society, and be mislead by hucksters like Obama who will never lead us to true freedom (mind body and soul).

      Yes

“Beginning in the late nineteenth century, and especially after 1930 in the United States, the term liberalism came to be associated with a very different emphasis, particularly in economic policy. It came to be associated with a readiness to rely primarily on the state rather than on private voluntary arrangements to achieve objectives regarded as desirable. The catchwords became welfare and equality rather than freedom. The nineteenth century liberal regarded an extension of freedom as the most effective way to promote welfare and equality; the twentieth century liberal regards welfare and equality as either prerequisites of or alternatives to freedom. In the name of welfare and equality, the twentieth-century liberal has come to favor a revival of the very policies of state intervention and paternalism against which classical liberalism fought. In the very act of turning the clock back to seventeenth-century mercantilism, he is fond of castigating true liberals as reactionary!”-Milton Friedman

Anyway, as a… um… Moonbat, I’d like to point out that our Founding Fathers held a wide variety of opinions on Government, Economics and Religion. I’m not sure any of them would have felt comfortable being labeled “liberal” or “conservative” in modern terms. One of the great things about them was that when they disagreed, they were respectful. Sometimes they even compromised. We should look into that.

Moonbat was tongue-and-cheek, since conservatives are often called “wingnuts” (which I suppose only means that we hold society together, lol). I’m not against compromise, but I don’t believe you compromise on moral principle. I guess I should point out that it’s only a kind of short-hand for me to refer to “Founding Fathers” in the abstract as a political ideal, since many of them I would have had profound differences with. Alexander Hamilton was too Big Government for my tastes; Thomas Jefferson had strange ideas about the Bible, and so forth. And the whole slavery thing was bad news, though the seeds of its ultimate demise were built into the Constitution and Declaration.

But to call them “respectful”? Please! They were just as acrimonious as anything you hear in politics today, if not more so. Read some of the newspapers of the time! (There was a whole book that was written about this, but the title escapes me.) And I mean, Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Respectful?

Caitlynsdad writes: “Thomas Jefferson had strange ideas about the Bible”

Actually, a lot of those allegations are bogus. He wasn’t a Deist, but he wasn’t a big fan of organized religions. He described himself a Christian devoted to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

“The priests have so disfigured the simple religion of Jesus that no one who reads the sophistications they have engrafted on it, from the jargon of Plato, of Aristotle and other mystics, would conceive these could have been fathered on the sublime preacher of the Sermon on the Mount. Yet, knowing the importance of names, they have assumed that of Christians, while they are mere Platonists, or anything rather than disciples of Jesus.” – Thomas Jefferson to Dr. Waterhouse, 1815

Caitlynsdad writes: “But to call them “respectful”? Please! … Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Respectful?”

Exactly lol! When I saw that “the Founders were respectful” thing I actually belly laughed. The pamphleteers were notorious, and today’s mudslinging is meek in comparison. This tradition of rhetorical venom and mudslinging goes back to the very founding of our nation lol!

LOL, I guess I should have been a little clearer about what I meant by “strange ideas.” I was referring specifically to Jefferson denying the divinity of Christ, which is pretty clear in the Bible. That’s one of those ideas he attributed to the disfiguring tendencies of priests, though I happen to be kind of attached to the whole idea of the teaching authority of the Church.

“Only liberals call for an end to negativity.” Of course, to the liberal mind, what “end to negativity” means is conservatives giving up their principles and doing what the Democrats want. Never seems to work the other way around with them. That’s why every Democrat loves a RINO.

This story is funny in a number of ways, and I’m about to break my back laughing. No one in the tea party is talking about race Thislethwaite and Dionne. We’re talking about the Constitution, and you’re talking about race. So what happens is that a conservative says “Jefferson,” and T&D hear, “the white race!”; a conservative says, “limited government,” and T&D hear, “the white race!”; a conservative says, “free markets,” and T&D hear, “the white race!”; a conservative says, “less spending and less taxes,” and T&D hear, “the white race!” In other words,T&D are not hearing us, they’re hearing the echoes of their own obsessions. Once more, the race-obsessed left proves why they are the race-obsessed left.

      Psychological projection (per Wikipedia):

In Freudian psychology, Psychological projection or projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person unconsciously denies their own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, such as to the weather, a tool, or to other people. Thus, it involves imagining or projecting that others have those feelings.[1]

Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

An example of this behavior might be blaming another for self failure. The mind may avoid the discomfort of consciously admitting personal faults by keeping those feelings unconscious, and redirect their libidinal satisfaction by attaching, or “projecting,” those same faults onto another.

Oh ye of little minds… may God open your minds and hearts to realize that race has nothing to do with it. God loves all his children… black, yellow, brown, white, etc. Why is it that small minds have always got to turn to race to justify their existence? This country was born from Divine Destiny… all Glenn is suggesting is that we all turn back to those founding principles to restore honor and freedom for our children and our children’s children. Quit the race talk… it only divides… or is that your real intention?

There is a small group of VERY wealthy aryan(WHITE) fellows who are working very hard(with their wealth) to enslave the whole world. Most of our recent presidents and a great number of others all over the world work for , or have worked for them, to help put in place“the new world order”. Obama is working for them, too.
These are their goals: to control ALL resources: to regulate ALL transactions; to hold ALL military and political power; to contol population; to eliminate any reverence of a creator.
These EVIL men have made great headway, lately. The U.S.A. is in their way. there are 800+ internment facilities currently staffed by foreign soldiers(mercenaries) on American soil. Christians the world over are being killed or ripped off of their homes. Europe is destablized. The U.K. is Islamacized. and people everywhere are being terrorized. The cause of all of this calamity can be laid at their door. For lack of a better term, let’s call these people the Bilderbergs. look it up.
watch the video“The Obama Deception”. Pray continually, cherish the Word……max

Soros’s CAP pinheads calling the Tea Parties racist using deliberately misleading stats and outrageous assumptions, spoken of with absolute certainty. Well, at least their predictable.

They deliberately lumped non-Hispanics and whites together, to make it look 80% white; as, the real stats probably don’t fit their narrative.

This kind of reminds me of the gun photo, where they left off the person’s head; because, it was a black with the automatic weapon, at a peaceful 2nd amendment rally; and, they only wanted to show the Tea Party as a bunch of, white, gun nuts.

Here‘s a few things I suspect they don’t really get:

      Government is the problem.

      People can help people.

      Giving money can be B A D !!!!

There is more than one way to help others.

A poor man can be just as greedy as a rich man.

Money is not the root of all evil. (but the love of money can be…. see: poor man).

Politicians are self-interested (greedy, power hungry, attention seekers, etc.).

That we care about the poor, the sick, handicaps, minorities, etc. etc….

Note: this last reason is why some of us ARE so OPPOSED to the progressive agenda. It is because we consider the consequences and determine that these feel good policies will actually hurt the very people they claim we hate. But they refuse to hear our arguments because it is incompatible with their view of how things work. I think it is like children with selective hearing. My mom told me about this once. I didn’t believe her. She demonstrated with my brother. She was telling him “no” in the course of several sentences but he literally only heard the parts that could be interpreted as “yes.”

I have a simple solution. If you want to live in a Marxist/Socialist/Fascist nation there are plenty to choose from. Go to one of them and leave America the hell alone. We are not interested in the “New World Order” or one world government where we are governed by people we haven‘t elected with philosophies we don’t agree with. Go in peace and rejoice in your miserable existence among like minded people. With a clear distinctive comparison you may be able to demonstrate how superior your system of government is. You wouldn’t have to fight with freedom loving individuals and you could just get on with your collective agenda. Damn, just when I was on a roll I remembered your agenda can’t work unless you can rob people of the fruits of their labor. Well just go anyway.

More than “shooting themselves in the foot”. When they drag out the old “race card” ploy, when such a high percentage of overall voting population feel the Tea Party “has merit” — then what they do is “shoot themselves” in their “election campaign”. Even the leeches that are living off the government largess of OUR money, know in their heart that it cannot last… and those who know the truth when they hear it are only further pushed away from the BIG GOVERNMENT progressives when the “Race Card” is played without merit … The Republicans will win a majority in Congress in the 2010 elections … May God have mercy on us if the Republicans return to their RINO ways, and abandon the Tea Party and the Conservatives when they get elected!

A magical thing happens when a person grows up in a real family where people work hard, stay honest and earnest, and stay off of welfare, food stamps and other handouts. It is called responsibility. Any American can have a good life. The progressive landscape in this country over the last 50 years has ruined the family and in turn the hopes and potential of the black race. There are exceptions, of course. The evil done to the poor in this country has been a progressive plan to indenture a large group of Americans to the liberal cause. First by desroying the family, and then to keep this group indentured through entitlements..These people will burn for the cause.

Once again, either a complete misunderstanding of the American Awakening or an overt attempt to undermine it through the typical tactics of fear-mongering and race-baiting. The movement is about America…not about race.

The Progressives with their massive entitlement programs are the biggest ‘oppressors’ of minorities in this country; they only survive due to their penchant for class and racial warfare rhetoric.

The Tea Party movement is about individuals (all races and classes) over government. Give people the freedoms and the individual responsibility and they will rise to the occasion. Remove the fetters imposed by big government and more people will succeed, regardless of race.

In the 60′s when I was growing up if you were called or called someone one of those terms, it was a serious accusation. Nowadays, they all are simply words meaning that you do not buy their way of thinking hook, line, and sinker. But his extreme liberal/socialistic policies of spending and huge debts and increasing government and reducing our individual freedoms has changed a lot of people’s minds. Now we don’t support him or his policies. It’s that simple. We want change! Not socialistic government policies. What’s that say about me? What’s that say about them?

It’s Not About Racism. It’s About Political Ideology. It’s Simply A Case Of Opposing World Views.

I quote from David Horowitz: Obama’s Rules For Revolution: The Alinsky Model

“The title of Hillary’s thesis was “There Is Only the Fight: An Analysis of the Alinsky Model.” In this title she had singled out the single most important Alinsky contribution to the radical cause – his embrace of political nihilism. An SDS radical once wrote, “The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the revolution.” In other words the cause whether inner city blacks or women – is never the real cause, but only an occasion to advance the real cause which is the accumulation of power to make the revolution. That was the all consuming focus of Alinsky and his radicals.”

Wake up Black America! Obama is a Saul Alinsky disciple, and proud to be. You are being played by people who are promising utopia. Utopian societies always require strict adhearence to a central plan. As the plan is rolled out all good citizens are expected to endure temporary inconvieniencs, and compromise personal freedom. Public dissent is a threat to society and trouble makers are “detained.”

The promise is that once the plan is fully implemented, the good life will begin. But there is always something else; a new reason to endure inconvenience and make sacrifices. Anybody who has second thoughts and falls out of step becomes a threat to the society. Group identity, such as by race, is no longer tolerated. After all, group identity movements were originally manipulated to bring down the old society. There will be no more of that.

Unauthorized changes made at the community level may negatively affect the collective so that is strictly forbidden. Changing residence is no longer between two private parties. All dwellings are owned by the collective and changes must be approved by a government agency. If people, on a whim, just up and moved to another city, there would be an imbalance of labor that could disrupt production. And on and on. Use your imagination; or you could read up on real life in any number of Marxist Utopias.

The divide between Blacks and Whites is not anything as sinister as racism. It is merely based on political ideology. A great many Blacks support leaders who have a Marxist worldview. You think not? It is widely reported that 90% or more Blacks approve of Obama’s performance.

A great many Whites helped elect President Obama. What made them turn “racist?” The fact is they didn’t. They turned against him only after they became aware of his Marxist/Post-Colonial ideology.

Read “Dreams From My Father.” Obama tells Us what he believes. Was he lying?
