Progressive Pastor‘s Hiring Showcases Obama’s Urge to Continue Growing the Religious Left

Rev. Derrick Harkins Is Obamas New Director of Religious Outreach

Rev. Derrick Harkins (Facebook)

There’s big news on the faith front coming out of Washington, D.C. As the Democrats eye their 2012 prospects, President Barack Obama’s political team is seeking to continue its courting of religious adherents.

The left’s new and increasingly-active efforts to connect with evangelicals, Catholics and other religious groups will be headed by the Rev. Derrick Harkins, a well-known commentator in both the faith and political realms.

According to Politico, Democrats believe they can resonate with people of faith on immigration, the federal budget and many other issues. Earlier this month, Obama became the first Democratic president to meet with the National Association of Evangelicals — a curious development considering that Harkins sits on the group’s board.

The NAE has a fair amount of influence in America’s Christian communities, as the group represents 40 denominations (45,000 local churches). While the NAE certainly champions more conservative issues than it does liberal, this new-found connection with the Obama administration is interesting, as it shows that the group may be moving more into the progressive fold on issues like immigration (although it’s possible that the meeting was more of a formality).

The current causes that the NAE is fighting for are traditional marriage, non-governmental support for abortion and lowering the nation’s debt — hardly issues that would formulate a leftist platform. But it‘s not a stretch to wonder whether Harkins’ pull as a board member will bring Obama and the group closer together on immigration, among other issues.

Obama has a history of interacting with leftists like Rev. Jim Wallis, so he’s no stranger to working with more liberal clergy to spread his message out to the masses. Politico reports:

In 2008, Obama won Catholics and mainline Protestants, and overperformed with young evangelicals, in part through an operation put together by Josh DuBois, now the White House faith director.

Harkins has been commissioned to continue these successes and to essentially build deeper into America’s religious framework. He’s described as a “progressive, African-American pastor” who also serves as a senior preacher at his church, 19th Street Baptist.

Harkins, though, isn’t simply a random selection for the position, as he has a relationship with at least one leftist group that is more than friendly to Obama’s agenda. He has ties to Faith in Public Life — in fact, he‘s on the organization’s board.

The Blaze has reported on FPL in the past. In 2009, the group, which describes itself as, “a strategy center advancing faith in the public square as a positive and unifying force for justice, compassion and the common good,” has ties to billionaire George Soros.

In fact, as we reported this summer, the group received a two-year $450,000 grant in 2009 from his group (partially tied to FPL’s work toward achieving immigration reform). FPL sometimes takes to its blog to defend Soros against Glenn Beck.

Politico describes FPL as an organization that was “launched in 2006 to take the partisan edge off faith in the public square, dominated by the GOP in 2004.” However, the group is essentially a cohort of religious leftists (right now, the web site touts support for Occupy Wall Street on its main page).

The FPL connection is an intriguing one, indeed. Harkins has also been involved in calls for immigration reform (though he claims he doesn’t support amnesty). Below, watch his statements on the matter in a 2007 interview with Lou Dobbs:

Earlier this year, he spoke at an immigration reform rally. His presence was advertised on Wallis’ Sojourners web site. And here is is discussing Democratic health care reform back in 2009:

Harkins was also a signatory to a letter that was produced by Sojourners and FPL, urging politicians not to engage in budget-cutting and advocating for “government support” for Americans in great need. When speaking about the document’s importance, he said the following:

“This is not about some nameless faceless ‘other.’ The choices politicians make about the budget will harm or help our neighbors. We want to serve those who don’t have lobbyists on K Street. Our budget is a moral document, and it is either going to reflect the best of whom we are or the worst.”

Read the letter below:

Rev. Derrick Harkins Is Obamas New Director of Religious Outreach

It should be noted that Harkins considers himself pro-life, although he apparently said that he was opposed to Republican-led attacks on Planned Parenthood.

In the end, it seems Harkins is a mixed-bag when it comes to liberal versus conservative ideals. That being said, he most definitely fits the “progressive” bill in his immigration and federal debt standpoints. Also, his alignment with FPL showcases his willingness to side with — and even advocate for — far-left causes.

Harkins will likely be a beneficial tool for the Obama administration as it seeks to continue to embed itself in America’s faith community.

so let me get this correct. evangelicals on the right, the ones who have been pushing values for decades are evil. but when the left courts them, it is all peace and light. and what happens when the subjects of abortion, gay marriage and evolution versus creation pos up? pesky little topics most evangelicals and catholics have a stand on. will the dnc just ignore it and hope it goes away?

Communists are relative newcomers. The spiritual house of Christianity has been compromised for far longer by the jihadis that move silently behind the cloak of deception the false linking of Allah with God has allowed them for 1,400 years.

Behind the commies are the jihadis.

If Christians will stick to the Bible as the ONLY rule of faith and practice, charlatans such as this “reverend” (along with the myriad of other so called progressives) will be shown for the false teachers they are. All one has to do to see the wolves among the flock is to become intimately familiar with the Lord Jesus Christ. Woe unto them who scatter the flock and not gather Jeremiah once said. There is a special place for those who cause the little ones to stumble too, complete with a custom fitted millstone necklace. The false pastors and teachers don’t read the Word, nor do they have any fear of God, because they would run away from the ‘religious left’ as fast as they could, if they knew the fate of their kind.

This reminds me of the Pope and the Catholic Church turning their eyes while Hitler rounded up and murdered Jews in Rome. As long as the Pope remained silent on this issue, Hitler allowed him to stay head of the Catholic Church. Funny how history is repeating itself. It seems like the fraud Catholic religion is always at the root of trouble. Most people don’t know that it is the Catholic Churches who are assisting illegals into our country and even providing them with safe havens. Catholics are frauds and do not represent the Christian faith.

Would he also support all the lying that Obama has done. All the hatred spewed from his lips and how he has run his administration into attack attack attack? Look at the Biden lie, more rapes because of the lack of stimulus. Carney just doubled down on that in his press conference ( http://www.americanparchment.com/video/2011/oct/carney_biden_rape.html )

This is the way Obama is running his admin. And this is a very minor point but the most recent. He lies, cheats, steals and the pastor’s on the left let him go ahead and not confront him.

The late Francis Schaeffer said in A Christian Manifesto that liberal theology is nothing more than secular humanism in religious terms. No matter what the issue, the liberal theologian will ALWAYS come down on the side of the secular humanist. Whether it be abortion, same-sex “marriage,” social welfare, the environment, Occupy Wall Street, sexual promiscuity, the liberal theologian will follow secular humanism rather than the Bible. Therefore, liberal theology is a cult.

I think you need to do more homework. If you are too lazy to read the “Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican,“ you could watch ”The Scarlet and the Black.” Maybe then you will turn from your blatant bigotry towards all Catholics and realize there are good and bad, Christians and non-Christians in the Catholic Church.

Aside from your sweeping generalizations, you are correct to point out these ‘christians’ are not being very Christlike. They seem to believe Jesus preached that we are to become Cesar in order that our neighbors might serve the poor. So “much for love thy neighbor as thy self.” These ministers should be preaching love first and foremost towards the poor and the rich, and value for value. Even Jesus paid His way when demanded (e.g. temple tax), even when He did not receive full value for what He paid. So we are all called to be generous with our aid to others, give extra value for value when we can, but never to encourage people to demand value for no value.

Never have I heard or seen a more colorful person as Jeremiah Wright. I cannot refer to him as Reverend, since this association would forever tarnish Christianity. My Lord Jesus Christ many years ago climbed the steps and knocked on the front door of The Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Jeremiah Wright slowly opened the massive wooden door and in disbelief for seeing “Jesus” at his church said” Hell No, not in my house “and slammed the door. Jesus had not been welcomed there for many years. When I heard this, I had empathy for my Lord. He freely offered salvation, but many would not accept this eternal gift, bought and paid for with his most precious blood. It is a terrible spiritual crime the thousands including the Obamas’, Jeremiah led astray.

    Jeremiah Wright’s Top Sermon Titles

    1. Whites not Right!
    2. Them Jew’s got my money
    3. Live for today, hell with tomorrow
    4. Them chicken’s are a roosting
    5. Jeremiah’s in the House
    6. Jesus Who?
    7. No cash, we take EBT Cards
    8. Follow me to the “Promised Land”
    9. Ain’t nothing my damn fault
    10. Yos yer Daddy, don’t ask yer Momma

An early mentor of Obama’s in Hawaii was Frank Marshall Davis, an African American writer, poet and card carrying member of the Communist Party. He was a friend of Obama’s maternal grandfather, Stanley Dunham who introduced him to Obama. Maya Soetoro-Ng, Obama’s half sister, told the Associated Press that her grandfather had seen Mr. Davis was a “point of connection, abridge if you will, to the larger African-American experience for my brother”. His grandfather would have done better to forget the hyphenated “crap” and concentrate on the American Experience for young Barack. This type of thinking only widens the racial discord, keeping us forever from coming together as “One nation, one people under God”. According to the Enquirer, Barrack was at the tender impressionable age of ten when he first met the family friend. For seven years he had a father son relationship with Davis, who has confessed to having sex with children, sadomasochism, bondage and practicing a wide array of deviant sexual activities. I am not suggesting that any inappropriate relationships existed between Barry and Mr. Davis. You could say that Barry had an interesting childhood.

There were visible cracks in the aura allowing a glimpse into his real nature. The true lack of character was clear for all to see. A few looked into the light and saw the truth! Some looked but would not see! Many others warmed by his glow, didn’t care about truth or the source of his brilliance. Most in the media coddled his candidacy defending and denying his radical agenda. They insulated the public from the truth of his collusion with Jeremiah Wright. Chris Matthews after Obama gave him a tingle down his leg said “I want to do everything I can to make this thing work; this new President work”. Note to Chris: Helping Obama to succeed means the demise of the country. Chris looks pretty sick in an Obama cheerleader outfit. His outlook on life is paler that his legs. He will one day know the folly of his thinking in this life or the next one. Will Satan need a commentator to carry his propaganda? A tingle down your leg there might mean a body part on fire, or the arrival of Barney Frank.

As a Roman Catholic, I am disgusted to know that over 53% of Catholics voted for Barack Obama last election. They were all so easily fooled by Obama’s glitter. Now the Catholic Church in America is worried of anti-Catholic legislation problems created by Obama care. Obama care can mandate and force Catholic Hospitals to perform abortions that are contrary to the beliefs of practicing Catholics and the church. It will be interesting to see what is going to happen.

There’s a distinct vulgarity to Obama when it comes to religion. It’s clear now that Obama is at the very best agnostic, at worst an atheist. He spent 20 years listening to his “sounding board for his conscience” Jerry Wright spout his anti-American, race baiting, anti-semitic bile under the guise of a church pastor. You‘ll recall that Jerry Wright travelled to Libya with Crazy Louie Farakhan to visit Farakhan’s “Brother” the late Muammar Ghadaffi? Obama has told a then vehemently secular Turkish parliament that America is one of the largest muslim nations in the world. Then told a group of Egyptian students that American is not a Christian nation. He donned a yarmulke and “prayed” at the wailing wall in Jerusalem during his 2008 campaign (yes I know…has he ever stopped campaigning?). When the heat got too hot about his being a muslim, he conveniently sets up a photo op to “walk to church” in the way of the jewish custom. Here‘s what I’m getting at..Obama uses religion as a prop. A tool. He’s not a believer, he never acknowledges any faith unless pressed to. He’s a religious chameleon, he changes his colours to hide himself. Conservative Jews have finally awakened up to him (even with Time magazine laughably running a cover with him in a yarmulke) as evidenced in the loss of the Weiner seat in New York…and a republican hasn’t won that seat since 1923. Obama uses religion.

Most worrisome is the office of faith partnerships which suggest sermon topics and outlines. All this leads me to conclude we just might have an “ shadow ” State church being created before our eyes.
And I’m not trying to insult Catholics ( most of my family are catholic, I USED to be.) but have you ever looked upon how the church is run from a strictly governmental standpoint minus the religious aspects? It is a socialist system, in fact it’s the worlds FIRST and oldest socialist system, just food for thought folks, not try to stir anyones ire, but I’ve long pondered who would benefit most from a global socialistic government. @Annonymous — they do not necessarily need to have the people vote for Mr Obama, what they need to do is push the message forward, and to confuse the issues to a degree that their opposition in the religious circles will become discredited and disarmed.

This is nothing less and more than a infiltration and desecration of the traditional Christian values, and to turn them into a abomination of state-sponsored faith — do as the state declares or face the wall.

Look into the history of South and Central America where the marxists infiltrated the churches to start their assaults on the nations they wanted to take over for the socialist causes.

Kudo’s to your remarks, AnonymousTIrrelevant and Snowleopard. And remember, the Communist government of China has officially taken over the Catholic Church, making priest appointments and dictating what is preached and taught by the priests.

The rainbow coalition, along with the government, has targeted churches — successfully. Many of us are no longer able to condone much or all of what is being preached/taught by organized religions, much less feel good about financially supporting the politicians and causes (i.e., homosexuality and full amnesty for illegal aliens) financed with Sunday collections.

Note: the latest organized religion to defy God’s commands about homosexuality is the Presbyterian U.S.A. Church. Yet their 2 million-plus membership apparenty intends to continue applauding and supporting the newly-ordained homosexual pastors.

I encourage everyone (even atheists) to remove the blinders from their eyes and study the Old Testament. Its lessons apply every bit as much to us today as they did to folks living thousands of years ago. You‘ll see the same hatred for God’s children then being played out today (in the U.S.) by members of the X and Y generations (as well as late baby boomers). The prophet/preacher Zechariah was stoned to death inside the temple grounds (i.e. church property today).

Remember, every knee will bow. Lord, come quickly.
