‘Project Gunrunner’ Update: Rep. Darrell Issa Subpoenas the Federal Government

Rep. Darrell Issa, the California Republican who is Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, told CBS News that he has subpoenaed documents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) regarding Project Gunrunner. The ATF, which is in the Justice Department, has so far refused to release information about the “gunrunner” controversy.
Republican Rep. Darrell Issa fired off a subpoena Friday to the Justice Department agency in the middle of a cross-border gun sales operation that has been blamed for a massive flow of arms to Mexican drug cartels and possibly the death of a U.S. border agent.
Issa, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, demanded the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives provide him documents related to “Project Gunrunner” after the agency failed to respond to questions by a Wednesday deadline.
“The unwillingness of this administration — most specifically the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms — to answer questions about this deadly serious matter is deeply troubling,” Issa said in a written statement. “Allegations surrounding this program are serious and the ability of the Justice Department to conduct an impartial investigation is in question. Congressional oversight is necessary to get the truth about what is really happening.”….
In his statement Friday, Issa said the president did not specify whether Holder was aware of the policy or who did authorize it.
“One of the questions we always ask is who is lying,” Issa told Fox News earlier this week. ”We lose our credibility if we don’t come clean and make the changes necessary to save lives on both sides of the border.”
The subpoena orders ATF to provide documents to the committee by April 13 or face a contempt of Congress charge.
Project Gunrunner, as The Blaze reported here, allowed buyers to illegally purchase guns in the United States and smuggle them to Mexico. Though the stated purpose of this project was to keep guns from getting into the hands of Mexican gangs–by tracking the movement of these illegally bought guns–it turns out that around 1,700 guns, “including hundreds of AK-47s and high-powered, armor-piercing .50-caliber“ were actually ”walked” into Mexico, as Fox News reports.
What were the consequences of that? According to The Blaze’s initial report:
One unidentified agent reportedly argued with his superior over the controversial and dangerous policy asking, “Are you prepared to go to the funeral of a federal officer killed with one of these guns?” Another agent noted that every time there was a report of shooting near the border, “we would all hold our breath, hoping it wasn‘t one of ’our’ guns.”
When U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was gunned down last December, serial numbers on two assault rifles found at the scene matched weapons the ATF had allowed a “suspicious buyer” to purchase.
CBS initially broke the story here.
Rep. Issa wants to know what roll the ATF played in this smuggling operation, but so far the agency has stonewalled his request for information. As a next step, Issa subpoenaed the ATF. Issa wants to know who is responsible for Project Gunrunner. As he says in the CBS interview below, “People in agencies knew about it and didn’t take action…that same individual [responsible for Project Gunrunner] theoretically could be approving some other misconduct that would cause Americans to lose their lives.”

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 6:46pmThe other story recently about guns is that the cartels are planning to kill border agents by firing at them from across the border with high-powered rifles – it won’t be a surprise when it is determined some of these ATF guns are being used to snipe our agents.
What I’d like to know is, how were they supposed to “track” these guns once they were sold? It’s not like they had GPS in them or anything – they just sold stock guns to shady folks. the only way to track them is after the fact, when the guns are found and have already been used for who-knows-what. Hopefully their sucess rate is better than 2 guns found for each border patrol officer murdered.

This was an attempt by the powers that be to boost the number of US guns used in Mexico violence to justify a crackdown on US gun owners, shops and regs. That said you can be sure Issa will encounter reinforced concrete steel wall after wall on this. Also if the Black Panther case is any indication of how things are dealt with this thing will be buried and never spoke of in a few weeks/months.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 8:16pmThe problem with this whole thing is that the ATF is currently hiding and confusing the documents. When I was serving in the military we were given a two weeks notice for inspections. This falls under the non nuclear side. People would make everything look like it was in order which it wasn’t. The people that would come and inspect were the same people who served on submarines and practiced the same ethics. Not all of them but a big percentage. Humans have a tendency to neglect truth, self criticism and true integrity especially in positions of power. They will lie through their teeth and on their mothers graves on this one. Who suffers, the innocent and the tax payers. Obama will set up a panel of so called experts at our expense to get to the bottom. Yeah right!

They had also written Issa and others about it, giving them the information no one else had. They’d also questioned ATF about it. This “Project Gun Runner” was a win-win for the administration.
1) sneak a ton of guns into Mexico to be used in violent attacks to de-stabilize yet another allie (or at least non-enemy) of the US.
2) Highlight and exagerate the proliferation of guns into Mexico from the US……..Tougher gun control is necessary……….NOT
You know, sometimes when you get to the bottom of something, you find yourself at the TOP.

I admire his persistent single-minded attacks and it would be interesting to hold these hearings unedited on FOX at prime time so everyone could see them and be able to judge the facts as they are presented, attacked and defended. Otherwise we might be subject to misleading headlines! (smile) .
