Proposal: Presidential Candidates Submit Handwritten Copy of Constitution

What if the president had to hand-write a copy of the Constitution before he took office?

That’s the question Dr. David Corbin and Dr. Matthew Parks of The King’s College-New York City are asking. Corbin is an associate professor of politics, while Parks is the assistant provost.

According to them, the presidential oath “to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States” is one that should be taken very seriously. But “you can’t do this if you don’t know the Constitution or aren’t willing to submit to it,” they say.

So, in a blog post on the First Things website, Corbin and Parks reveal a proposal that “each 2012 presidential candidate … adopt the ‘Constitution Pledge,’ promising to present a hand-written copy of the Constitution to the Chief Justice as he rises to take the oath of office.”

“We’re constantly looking for reminders of just what it is that makes America exceptional,” Corbin told The Blaze. “And our constitution is one of those things.”

But presidents today are too preoccupied with “big things” such as sweeping reforms, he says. Rather than focus on grand projects that may or may not fail, he would rather future presidents understand their job description. The president’s, he says, is “ready made” in the Constitution.

“And how would we know that you understand the job description [of president]?” Corbin asks, “By you reading and writing it down.”

The idea of the pledge is based on two examples: a biblical one and an historical one. The biblical passage of Deuteronomy 17:18-20, which instructs new kings to transcribe a copy of the law and keep it with him “all the days of his life,” was part of the impetus. The other inspiration comes from historical education: writing something out by hand tends to impress it upon your memory, like most of us experienced with spelling words or math problems.

Currently, no large-scale “pledge” campaign is scheduled. Corbin envisions the idea taking off when citizens in primary states start asking candidates if they’ve taken “the pledge.” And while he says it may make “too much sense for it to happen,” he asks “why couldn’t it?”

For now, he and Parks will volunteer as the first interrogators: “Any takers?”

This is great!! But would it take a Constitutional amendment to get it done?? I hope not. I hope there is more faith and moral integrity in this country than resorting to amending the Constitution to force the issue. I am probably not right, though. The progressives have brainwashed for too long. It will take strong measures to get such requirements to be adhered to.

There was a time, in the not too distant past, when reporters actually made sure that our representatives understood the Constitution by asking probing questions. Nowadays, the only time a “journalist” asks a candidate about the Constitution is if he is trying to shame a Conservative (e.g., Mr. Paul, do you believe that the 14th Amendment prohibits innocent babies, who are born to undocumented Mexican immigrants, from becoming U.S. citizens?).

The Best way to go about this would be to have anyone running for anything recite the Constitution (with Passion!) at a speech. No podium, no teleprompter, nothing to hide behind. Anyone can copy something down onto paper and just get it over with, but it’s hard for a liar to feel the passion and have the conviction to repeat and love what they are saying.

And that way they‘d have to actually think about what it’s saying and the meaning behind the words- not listening to a few “friends” misquote and destroy the meanings.

Great idea! And I would add that all congressional candidates should be required to submit to constitutional/government, US history and economic testing and be required to pass these tests to make sure we are not putting incompetent people into our congress. Anyone worthy of being in congress should have at least a college level of understanding in all these areas of study. And since these tests are a measure of a persons ability to study and learn, there can be no claims of gender, racial, age, ethnicity or religious descrimination. Taxation and budgeting are controlled by congress; the economic impact of there decisions impact the economy of our country in a very direct way. US history is important to know because we need to remember the past so we do not repeat the mistakes of the past. And since our constitution is the basis of our governement, they all should know the constitution and the roll of government in our country.

Maybe ALL candidates for federal jobs should do this! Congress and the Judiciary.

While they are at it, maybe they should also follow Deut 17:18-20, and write out a copy of Genesis through Deutronomy.

Look at WHY God said leaders of Israel should do it, “that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers.”

We could use some humility in our leaders. They need to STOP looking at themselves as above the rest of us. They haven’t parted the Red Sea, or had a hand in creating the universe, or suggested any improvements to the Ten Commandments.

Making a handwritten copy of those books would bring them face to face with some humility, and perhaps give them a sense of awe at the responsibility of stewardship they have been entrusted with. And perhaps they would ask for some wisdom in leading a people so obviously blessed by God in our times.

Zietgeist, I think I get your point and I agree! The political elite for the last one hundred years have been telling the masses how great, important, smart and wonderful they are, and we (the masses) the ones that actually do the work, buy it every time because, well… We are busy working! Well now the workers are starting to pay attention. It’s like a group of highly educated design engineers that have designed a new door. They are all busy patting themselves on the back on how great the new hinges are, how it seals tightly when it is closed, how it looks when it is open… it wins design awards, even a Pulitzer Prize! (Sound Familiar) Now they hand it down to the Machinist that is supposed to build it (the worker that actually does the work of the design elite), The machinist takes one look at the plans and says there is something wrong… The design elite don’t listen, the machinist tries to make them listen but the design elite know best… The machinist builds the door to spec. The design elite come down off their high horse to view this incredible new door they have labored months to create only to find no door handle… The machinist (the masses) said “I tried to tell you”…

Well the Design Elite could not have made such an obvious mistake, they collect their original plans… March right back up to their offices whip out a new design with a handle and promptly file a law suit against the machinist. (Sound Familiar… think Arizona)

We the people need to clip the wings of the elite in government and simplify government so any American with common sense, moral integrity, and a work ethic can run for any office he or she chooses. I think hand writing the constitution is a good a place to start as any, and defining a candidates moral code should be number two on the list if not number one. Anybody can copy the constitution… but do they have the integrity and mental fortitude to understand and uphold the document the just copied? A question for another day…

BRILLIANT! What a great idea! Now lets take it a step further… Every politician should have to do it! Lets not stop there… Lets have them commit their positions on key political issues and philosophy’s to hard copy; make it part of their “Resume”, make it available on line… for all to see. That might put an abrupt stop to this “flip-flopin” on issues… Lets make our elected officials ACCOUNTABLE for the agendas that got them elected in the first place! If they stray to far from the territory that got them elected use there own “Resume” as grounds for impeachment against them! No lengthy court battle, no argument… you committed yourself to this position when I voted for you and you did the exact opposite… YOU ARE FIRED! Accountability is a wonderful thing!

Exactly! They are the EMPLOYEES of the American people NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND! Most high end positions necessitate a written employment contract. As in almost every case the President or CEO ect. has a direct responsibility to the board (congress) they in turn are working in the interests of the shareholders. THATS US. If these people dont do the job the contact lays out, or their conduct is unseemly. THEY ARE GONE. Granted this would require a huge shift in the paradigm and a level of humility and accountability thats not present right now. but its doable. Our founders started with less and accomplished more.

How do you think we got to where we were (a few years ago)? CAPITALISM!!!!

    This is what we need

A laissez-faire capitalism, the economic system which best allows man to create, trade and prosper. As our country loses its hard earned freedom to the increasing powers of the state, we must remember that freedom is an absolute. You are either free or you are not. As Aristotle said simply “A is A.” Now, more than ever, we must stand together to protect our inalienable rights.

Most may find this a funny idea, but IMHO it is a brilliant one. Audio-visual is one effective way of learning. Writing the oath or the pledge for the candidate to read aloud during oath taking would most likely sink in making the oath-taker more committed to uphold the ideals of the office of the President.

Another thought – give them the chance to state with any portions that they disagree, on the front end. For instance, if I were to do this I would support the Constitution with the caveat that I support the repeal of the 17th amendment. Let them explain why. Then, let them govern in the way they laid their thoughts out. If we don’t agree with their thoughts, don’t vote for them!!

I‘ll say sorry up front to the Phd’s who wrote this. But what a lame idea, what’s next? A polygraph test. Why don’t we vote for upstanding people. Then we won’t have to bother with the gimicks. Speaking of gimmicks, no public office quitters. Who believe they have a chance to promote conservative ideas by quitting a office they sought.

To SICBOY – You bring up a good question however, I have found that it is very difficult to vote for someone who does not exist and who is not on the ballot. When you find an upstanding candidate, anywhere, please let us know so we can vote for him/her.

In the bible, Kings were required to write the whole 5 books of the Torah before two scribes, who watched while the King wrote it, every letter had to be spaced correctly, leaving nothing out. The purpose was so that the ruler understood he was not above the people, he had to follow the same law. He had to know the law. That’s the point with writing the constitution. Great idea..

You know. I think this is great. They have come up with a way that the next President can make sure he knows what he is protecting. I mean, right now the one in office is whipping his butt with it almost daily.

Sicboy.. did YOU not have to read and pass 2 Constitution tests before you could finish school??? the FIRST one is in 8th grade.. I can STILL say the preamble..So WHY should be so FAR FETCHED that someone who’s JOB it it is to FOLLOW it to be able to WRITE it.?. After all it‘s NOT anywhere near as long OR complicated as the HEALTHCARE bill that our current president couldn’t even READ..

it’s a gimmick, and you can’t see pass the Constitution to understand it. I WANT REAL CONSERVATIVES TO RUN FOR OFFICE. I believe in EVERY word of the Constitution. Our Govt is out of control, but I was trying to say just because someone can hand write the Constitution doesn’t mean their worth a hill of beans. We have LIARS everywhere. Right now we can only look at a persons past to understand how they might act in the future. I am not the enemy, and I will not drink cool-aid just because someone can write the Constitution.

No Hugh, I grew up poor. And now have a middle class life style. What does writing the Constitution have to do with this? Have you seen my posts or are you to busy with your personal attacks? Be specific if you can.

SICBOY, would having them handwrite the Constitution somehow keep us from being able to determine if they are indeed fine, upstanding, straight-shooting candidates? What’s the problem. It is obviously not a gimmick. The guys who came up with the idea have clearly stated their reasoning. Nothing in there about a gimmick. No, we shouldn’t decide to vote for any candidate simply because he wrote out the Constitution, just like we shouldn’t decide to vote for any candidate simply because he has a particular party affiliation or any other single criteria. We should gather all of the information we can about a particular candidate and make our decision accordingly. Having them agree to write the Constitution will not deter me from doing my duty as a citizen and performing my due diligence. I think this is a fantastic idea, and I would certainly want to find out more about any candidate who would agree to do this.

They “write” out the constitution with their oath of office already.
I would rather they write out an oath that states they will oppose sharia and international law being applied in the U.S. And that they persue and end the corruption that is progressivism starting with
RICO investigations of this current congress associates and family’s with the aim of recouping “tarp” & “stimulus” monies. A freeze of Soros’ assets along with Cair would get my vote.

In all honesty, I have to agree with Sicboy. Obama doesn’t believe in the Constitution, he thinks it‘s an outdated document that’s overdue for a revision. Anyone could copy word for word the Constitution, but in the end that won’t keep them from ignoring it after they have the job. Unless the candidate has the right mindset, the ability to keep his word, and always have at heart what‘s in this country’s best interest…writing on a piece of paper really won’t mean anything to them.

I have to agree with sicboy on this. It is a gimmick. Our current POTUS is a so called constitutional scholar. Do you think for a minute that he would not write out the Constitution all the while thinking how horrible it is. Maybe even with notes in the margins on where it should be improved.

This is a gimmick politicians lie constantly. They will tell you what you want to hear so that they can feed their need to be in control of people. The trick is to find people who believe that the best leaders don’t command from on high but lead by example and also believe that that the best government is one that governs the least.

Sicboy: I think I am the only person who does not look down on Sarah Palin for stepping down as governor of Alaska.

During the final months of her governorship, Palin was constantly defending herself against unfounded legal attacks waged by political enemies. Each accusation was proven false, but court costs were ridiculously high. In the end, Palin saw that the attacks would continue and the costs to her state would be enormous.

By stepping down, she showed two things: 1) that she is not a typical power-hungry politician, and was willing to relinquish power if she felt it was the right thing to do. And 2) that she was willing to put her state ahead of herself, even if it meant having a reputation as a quitter.

George Washington could have been president for life, and kings stood in awe as he relinquished power. Sarah Palin is derided for saving her state millions of dollars, at the expense of her reputation.

I would vote for Palin if she were running against, say, McCain. Only because we already have enough progressives in high office. Against Romney or Huckaby, she wouldn’t get my vote. I like Sarah, but I don’t think she would make the best president in the world. But “because she’s a quitter”? No, I couldn’t care less about that.

You started the personal attacks with your cheap shot at Sarah Palin. And yes now I have read a lot of your post on several stories. I do agree with you that our government is out of control and no longer works to serve the American People. I know having candidates hand write the Constitution does not ensure they will respect and follow it. But at least we will know they have actually read it. I doubt 50% of members of Congress have actually read the Constitution. When I read your shot at Sarah Palin I thought you were another leftist like Danglinbags. I have now read your post on several stories. I agree with you on more things than I disagree with you on. I like Sarah Palin and I think she is the real deal, you do not. To each his own.
P.S. sometimes I can be a smart ass, just ask my wife……sorry.
