Protesters ‘Mic Check’ Jan Brewer During Speech at American University

Arizona Republican Governor Jan Brewer’s visit to Washington D.C. this weekend for the National Governors Association conference was certainly eventful. Brewer first made headlines with the announcement Saturday that she would skip out on a dinner at the White House hosted by the President to honor the nation’s governors, then on Sunday appeared on Meet the Press to announce her endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Apparently, Brewer faced another heated confrontation Friday night, having had the tail end of her speech at American University cut short by College Democrats attempting to “mic check” the Arizona Republican.
An American University alum in attendance for the event, which was put on by AU College Republicans, notified The Blaze about the protest that took place during the Q&A session following the governor’s speech, and sent this video of what he said were “College Dems and Occupiers” chanting and yelling at Brewer.
“She was forced to leave and the protesters marched out to the quad and unraveled a banner denouncing the governor,” the AU alum told The Blaze in an email.
AUTV reported on the protest Sunday:
The AU student newspaper The Eagle reports that about 20 students protested the governor’s immigration policies towards the end of her 15-minute speech:
“Stereotyping was legalized because of SB1070,” said Andrea Gonzalez, referring to the controversial immigration Arizona law that requires law enforcement officers to check a person’s immigration status when there is “reasonable suspicion” that the person may be in the country illegally.
“We will stand in solidarity for these immigrants,” said Gonzalez, a freshman in the School of International Service. “It’s not right that this racism is occurring.”
Gonzalez went on to tell The Eagle that the protesters did not infringe on Brewer’s freedom of speech, having waited until the end of her speech to begin the protest.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 6:26pmSpeakers invited to speak at Universities need to have a contingent of bodyguards or security to escort these protestors straight to jail. I can think of about a dozen speakers including Nonie Dawish, Robert Spencer, Brigitte Gabrielle and others who’ve had to cut short their speeches. It costs anywhere from a thousand to 25K for speakers. One would think that investment deserves some security.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 8:35pmThe governor needs to start restricting funds to the university. It’s obviously no longer an educational body but a political body fully endorsed and encouraged by the university staff. The staff could have easily prevented this interruption but decided not to. Hold back dollars and see how the educators start to leave their bias at home in preference of being employed.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 6:21pmWow a bunch of young college students with no life experience, talking about something that they have no idea about what it’s like to live in AZ. First I deal with the crime associated with illegal immigration everyday…the identity theft, the drugs, the beatings, the murders. Have they ever been to a drop house? Have they ever had to deal with someone whose credit is ruined because there identity was stolen by an illegal? Have they ever tried to identify an illegals dead and beat body because they couldn‘t pay the coyote’s fee? Have they ever had to feed and clothe and give medical aid to the victim’s of a drop house? Have they ever had to ivestigate the child sexual assault and prostitution at a drop house? Have they ever had to deal with illegal border crossers killing a farmer, a USA citizen so they can smuggle their drugs? No I dare say they have no clue what so ever of any of this first hand. They believe what they are told and would just open our borders. Do they know that terrorists cross here, the same ones who took down the towers on 09-11-11. Are they really that ignorant , how qucikly they forget 09-11-11. We have huge cartel drug wars going on here, we have had illegal cartel members slip across and murder people here. This is a war zone in some places, it’s not about racisim, it’s not about being inhumane to Mexican citizens, it’s about being in our country ILLEGALLY thats the whole point period. Try going to another country illegally and see what happen

We deport them and they come right back…do you really want these people here to add to an already overwhelmed justice system living among you. Well if thats what you want then go ahead and when your a victim of a crime from an illegal border crosser and get no justice because they are just deported you will understand the frustration we face everyday. We have to secure our borders and stop this.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 1:35amHey I’m part of the left, let me hear some of your “logic”
So, because one state is having difficulties with a group of people, those people and people that “look” like those people, should be subjected to unlawful search and seizures?
Well in MY state, we are having a difficulty with Crystal Meth and it just so happens that the majority of Meth users are white, blue-collar workers. HENCE, by your “logic” every white person within that income range should be subjected to random body searches to ensure they are not carrying illegal Methamphetamine.
The bus doesn’t stop there, I can think of a different crime to fit every major demographic in the United States. So where do you draw the line between what criminal actions are worth stereotyping and which are not?
Please tell me more of your “logic” and how fair it is…

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 12:59pmvotebushin12 doesn’t understand the Arizona law. It’s NOT random searches and seizures. The law says, if in the process of making an arrest, or some other law enforcement duties, if the officer has reason to believe that the perpetrator is here illegally, he should investigate the legality of the person’s immigration status. What? We’re not supposed to even ASK if someone is here illegally? What part of, “Illegal,” are you finding it hard to accept?
Report Post »baldsith
Posted on February 28, 2012 at 1:24pm@ votebushin12..we do not just stop people because they are of a Hispanic Background and ask if they are here legally. That is not how the law is written. During the course of any investigation The law says, if in the process of making an arrest, or some other law enforcement duties, if the officer has reason to believe that the perpetrator is here illegally, he should investigate the legality of the person’s immigration status. Say for example I make a traffic stop for a violation. That person must provide a vaild form of Identification. A Drivers license from any US state is valid along with military ID. If that person cannot provide a valid ID or say they tell me they left it at home I run their name in the computer and pull up the MVD photo. If all that matches then they are general issued a citation for not having their license in their possession. If we cannot verify their information in the computer then they are arrested on the charge of Failure To Provide Identification which is a misdameanor in this state. They are then booked into Jail and have to go through ICE and fingerprint checks to determine who they are, if they happen to be here illegally then they are deported by ICE. That goes for everyone across the board not just one ethnic group. Like I said in one of my posts we arrest everyone here illegally not just Hispanics. Everyone Illegal goes from any country. But we are not like the news portrays us at all.

I know what the spirit of the law is, but you are a hardy fool if you believe laws are implemented to the letter. “Reasonable Suspicion”, I bet 9 times out of ten that translates into “brown skin and an accent”.
I‘m not saying there isn’t an immigration issue, but giving more power to the executive branch of the government isn’t necessarily the answer. Especially when police are the way they are. I may have limited experience dealing with illegal immigrants, but I have seen police corruption first hand and it’s disgusting. If they are willing to mistreat citizens the way they do I shutter to think what they will do to illegal immigrants – or even those suspected of being illegal.
So you can say what you want, but at the end of the day this law is going to boil down to racial profiling and abuse of authority. If you tighten the grip on the people you provoke reaction and revolt. Be warned.

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 9:01pm@voteinbush12 I‘m really sorry you feel that way about LEO’s as I am one of them and have been for 16 plus years. I suppose you have had a bad run in with some bad cops. Unfortunately there are corrupt and bad people in every job and I personally have done my best to to be ethical, moral and proffessional in my job. I always have treated people the way I would expect to be treated and I worked very hard for my badge and took my oath seriously both in the civilan world as a LEO and as a soldier. Not all cops are that way and it‘s sad that you feel we are all profiler’s. I work with people of all backgrounds and we are all brothers and sisters united with a common goal to protect the people in our charge and to uphold the laws and constitution and to carry out our duties to the best of our abilities. And so seeing as I do this for a living I don’t beleive “a hardy fool” is really correct seeing as I have first hand knowledge in this field. May I suggest you go on a couple ride alongs with the cops or sheriffs in your area and see first hand what they have to deal with and see it from their eyes. I have never tried to judge anyone until I have walked in their shoes. Take it for what it‘s worth but I’m just saying see it for yourself before you think we are all corrupt, because if you have seen the things I have you would understand.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 6:52pmSenior, it’s apparent that you have some sort of chip on your shoulder about the Natives. Here is what I have to say about the Native Americans, they lost.
They were defeated in the wars they fought, they gave in to their love of alcohol, their cultures self destructed as they drank the federal governments kool aid.
Before the white men came, they butchered each other for any number of reasons. Tribes and empires destroyed each other for religion, resources, slaves, etc. I’m sure if you go back in history for any tribe, they took their land from some other tribe, and pillaged and plundered everything they had to get what the white men took from them.
In essence, the toilet doth say the sink is full of excrement.
I could care less about what they whine about, other people have had just as bad a time in history and have successfully carved out an existence for themselves even in the midst of hardship. The only difference is that most of them failed to overcome and gave in. Too bad, so sad.
