Protesters Set Egyptian Museum Grounds Ablaze With Molotov Cocktails

CAIRO (The Blaze/AP) — Thousands of supporters and opponents of President Hosni Mubarak battled in Cairo’s main square Wednesday, raining stones, bottles and firebombs on each other in scenes of uncontrolled violence as soldiers stood by without intervening. Government backers galloped in on horses and camels, only to be dragged to the ground and beaten bloody.
At the front line, next to the famed Egyptian Museum at the edge of Tahrir Square, pro-government rioters blanketed the rooftops of nearby buildings, dumping bricks and firebombs onto the crowd below – in the process setting a tree ablaze inside the museum grounds.
On the street below, the two sides crouched behind abandoned trucks and hurled chunks of concrete and bottles at each other, and some government supporters waved machetes.
Bloodied anti-government protesters were taken to makeshift clinics in mosques and alleyways nearby, and some pleaded for protection from soldiers stationed at the square, who refused. Soldiers did nothing to stop the violence beyond firing an occasional shot in the air and no uniformed police were in sight.
“Hosni has opened the door for these thugs to attack us,” one man with a loudspeaker shouted to the crowds during the fighting.
The clashes marked a dangerous new phase in Egypt’s upheaval – the first significant violence between supporters of the two camps in more than a week of anti-government protests. Clashes began, first in the port city of Alexandria, just hours after Mubarak went on national television Tuesday night and rejected protesters’ demands he step down immediately. He defiantly insisted he would serve out the remaining seven months of his term.

Posted on February 2, 2011 at 1:40pmAh, the hot blood is flowing, the adrenaline is pumping, and we, the readers, are doing the Let’s watch “Him” and “Him” fight dance. Let’s throw everyone in an arena, pick the best fighters from each group and let them go at it. Whichever fighter comes out of the arena alive – that side wins. Grunt. Even if it’s a very dangerous side? Even if many of the fighters from that side have been imported from another country and trained to fight against untrained residents?
Mubarak may not be the best, however, can worse be installed?

And they have just enough stupid in them that they are now setting fire to their own culture and history. And our government is alright with the Muslim Brotherhood taking over. Does this surprise anyone? This anti-government sentiment is resonating all over the world…do you think our leaders are paying attention? I think so. And I think they’re planning behind closed doors for the “what ifs”.

Posted on February 2, 2011 at 12:59pmThis from Israel: Interesting that they might let Egyption forces lay in the Sinai.
Also, Israel is always ready, they are 24/7 – have to be when all your immediate neighbors have hated you for 6000 years.
“The Jerusalem Post”, 3 February 2011:
Ashkenazi: Unrest could change our security reality
IDF concerned of Palestinian demonstrations reminiscent of those in Egypt and attacks against Israel from West Bank
By Yaakov Katz
The ongoing demonstrations in Egypt could force Israel to adapt to a new security reality in the Middle East, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.- Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi warned Tuesday, in his first comments on the anarchy in Cairo.
“The quiet is fragile, and the security reality can easily change,” Ashkenazi said on the sidelines of a military exercise in the South. “It is enough to look at what is happening in Egypt to understand this.”
The IDF has yet to make any changes to its force deployment throughout the country, but has allowed, as reported first in The Jerusalem Post on Monday, for Egyptian forces to deploy in the Sinai in violation of the peace treaty between the countries.
The army has, however, been keeping a “watchful” eye on the West Bank out of concern that Palestinians will launch demonstrations similar to the ones in Egypt and that terrorist groups will try to launch attacks against Israel, which is focused on Egypt.
“We are being a little more careful these days,” a senior IDF officer said.
Shaul Mofaz, head of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said Israel would need to conduct a new strategic review due to the possibility of a regime change in Egypt. The IDF has built itself over the past decade under the premise that it faces only one real front in the North against Hizbullah and Syria.
“We should not interfere with what is happening in Egypt, but at the same time, I believe that this is a new strategic reality that forces the State of Israel to conduct a strategic review on a national level,” Mofaz said during a conference at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.
On Monday night, Palestinian terrorists fired three rockets into Israel. One of the rockets landed next to a synagogue where a wedding was taking place in Netivot, and caused extensive damage to a van parked nearby. Another rocket landed near Ofakim, and a third in the Ashkelon region.
No group took responsibility for the firing of the Gradmodel Katyusha long-range rockets. The attack came after a lull in rocket fire from Gaza enforced by Hamas, which has reined in other terrorist organizations in Gaza.

They will throw rocks and beat each other with sticks until the ruler of the day decides to step in and thump all of them on their heads. I witnessed this first hand while living in the Middle East in the 70s. At the end of Ramadan the Muslims were always in such a foul mood they would riot and burn stuff. You were wise to avoid the areas where they gathered for their obligatory riots.

Agreed, I love horses, though I do not ride often; the Arab nations normally take good care of horses and camels, yet they also see them as nothing more ultimately than tools as we look at the vehicles and such we use. They take care of them to a fair degree, yet still they ultimatly are just ‘tools’ not like in the US where we place a value on the welfare of aniamils as well as people.
