(The Blaze/AP) Demonstrators stormed a police department in Orange County, Calif., on Sunday to protest an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead and led to a violent clash between witnesses and police.
A crowd filled the Anaheim Police headquarters’ lobby Sunday as Chief John Welter prepared to hold a news conference.
Protestors chanted “no justice, no peace“ and ”cops, pigs, murderers” as officers stood by and watched, according to the Orange County Register.
It was unclear whether the press conference would go on. Earlier Sgt. Bob Dunn said only credentialed journalists would be admitted “because of security concerns.”
Welter was to address the shooting and confrontation Saturday in which a crowd threw bottles at officers who responded with tear gas and beanbag rounds.
The man was shot in front of an apartment complex around 4 p.m. Saturday following a foot chase, Dunn said. He died three hours later at a hospital.
Watch the disturbing video of subsequent protests, via KCAL:
The New York Daily News relates:
At one point, a police dog gets free of its handler and was seen running through the crowd, past a baby stroller, and biting a man on the arm.
Dunn said the police dog was “deployed accidentally.”
About five hours after the shooting, an Anaheim police helicopter was still hovering above the crowd while officers brandished batons and other weapons in an attempt to restore order.
The deceased man’s niece, 16-year-old Daisy Gonzalez, said her uncle likely ran away from officers when they approached him because of his past experience with law enforcement.
“He (doesn’t) like cops. He never liked them because all they do is harass and arrest anyone,” Gonzalez told the newspaper after lighting a candle for her uncle. She cursed at officers who were nearby and a police helicopter that hovered overhead.
Crystal Ventura, a 17-year-old who witnessed the shooting, told the Orange County Register that the man had his back to the officer, and was shot in the buttocks area.
The man then went down on his knees, she said, adding that he was struck by another bullet in the head. Ventura said another officer then handcuffed the man, who by then was on the ground and not moving.
“They searched his pockets, and there was a hole in his head, and I saw blood on his face,” Ventura told the newspaper.
“We were all waiting for [Police Chief John Welter] to come and talk to the community and give us an explanation. Why kill this man?” Yesenia Rojas, a 34-year-old woman who lives in the neighborhood, said.

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 9:18pmSo once again the gloves come off from those who hate the police; and few seem to be willing to in the media wait for the entire investigation to be finished. Right now I will not be suprised at all if it turns out this protest/demonstration/near riot was organized by the same puppet masters behing the various Occupy movements.
This is one of their signature moves; pressur, pressure and unrelenting pressure on all parts of the system, especially the law officials to provoke an reaction they can use as ‘police brutality.’

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 11:55pmGVBLAZE is the only one here making any sense. I did not join this nation’s most prestigious military organization, sign my name on the dotted line a thousand times, and swear to uphold and defend the Constitution; just so police could swoop in in every state and perform unlawful searches, seizures, raids, and acts of terror that quite often would make Mexican drug cartel members look like petty crooks. I am sick and tired of having to go through police check points and having my rights as they are outlined under the 4th amendment questioned or completely violated. I am sick of reading stories where a swat team is issuing a search warrant and wind up shooting a Marine in his own home before noon after working all night in a mine to make a living, while his wife and child listen as every bullet tears a hole through the lives.
I stand with Ted and with most of the people here. But some of you need to figure out that the police are not who you think they are. Sure, most are decent enough people. Your neighbors or family even. But almost every one of them would throw your entire life out the window to save their job or to make their quota. Some of them are not as such and they are know as Oathkeepers. Any officer or military member who is not openly an Oathkeeper is at question and you will never know what decision they will make when the chips hit the fan.

Posted on July 23, 2012 at 12:25amA general consensus states that people, when given power, will eventually be corrupted by it. IMHO – most cops (not all) are just playground bullies that have graduated.
I worked with a guy who was a sheriff’s reserve and he openly admitted that the only reason he was one is he liked the legal power to jack people around. Quite often, you would hear him on the phone laughing with other sheriff buddies about last night’s adventures and how they were able to do this and do that to someone. One example was a complete strip search of a female detainee (which rightly resulted in legal action on the female’s part). He eventually killed a bystander in a high speed car chase. Cops all defend each other – Penn State mentality. They don’t self-regulate and they don’t clean house unless media attention shines a light on them!

Posted on July 23, 2012 at 12:46amWell, we should wait to see what the full investigation unfolds. That said, I have my doubts about police, and I’m 100% with SGTB and GVBLAZE. Even in this situation, isn’t it odd to you that the majority of force abuse seems to be in California. It wasn’t 6 months ago that a guy goes nuts outside a fast food restaurant (I want to say Taco Bell), and as he’s approaching two cops, one with a dog, the other with his gun drawn, after tazing him and he doesn’t feel it, they just shoot him dead. Not remotely necessary when they have ample training to take him down, and he had no weapon on hand.
There are constant arrests of people who are taking videos, most commonly in California. All of them given bogus charges, none of them getting in the actual way of the investigation.
From eye witness reports the man was shot in the butt, and as he’s going down he is shot in the head. Of course this has yet to be proven.
That said, this scene we only see from the moment after the police started fighting back. We have no idea what really went on beforehand, and the video offers no solid proof of any wrong doing on the part of police. Still I can’t help but realize they could have handled this better, but we don’t know what happened from the moment the crowd formed to this point. Though shooting a young child obviously close enough where he’s knocked out cold and has to be carried off is beyond reproach. Police are trained to aim, I do not accept “heat of the momen

Yes, pray. I don’t believe anyone should “get there’s” unless they truly deserve it (like the recent shooter, Scott Peterson, Hitler, …you get the point). There is a good reason the idea for militia was all “land owning” members of the United States were to be considered standing militia, as government with more power becomes ever more repressive.
You think when the bullets fly, and people are arrested under any suspicion of treason you will simply be safe because you side with the powers that be no matter their actions?
Do you truly believe that police are incapable of abuses of power, that they will always do the right thing? That no man has ever been charged without just cause? That no arrest ever made was constitutional and LEGAL, even under some of the more draconian, anti-constitutional laws on the books?

Really? Have you ever even LOOKED at the history of law enforcement, their TT&P or uniforms and weapons systems? Are you really THAT ignorant?
Look at early police department uniforms and you will find that from the beginning they mimicked the trends in military uniforms. Then look at their weapons and find that originally they were unarmed minus a club until too many were killed because criminals had them outgunned from the outset. Then you have the variety of less-lethal options now because the alternative is a dead suspect. Formerly simple fights with cops could result in a dead suspect because his only options were fists or a pistol. Now they have a plethora of tools that allow situations to be deescalated safely. Yes OC and tasers suck! But it’s better than being dead!
Previously “crazy” people acting uncontrollably insane resulted in lethal force because a lone officer attempting to subdue someone that fears nothing and likely has the extra physical strength and lack of restraint could (and many times were) be over powered and killed.
Then there are the electronic recording devices. They are there to record all parties actions and ensure an accurate representation of events is reported. Numerous lawsuits and allegations of abuse have been dropped because of these devices, as have numerous officers ended up in jail because of them.
You don’t have to like them, but if you’ve never been one or dealt with what they do then you have no clue!

Police take extremely dangerous people off the streets all the time, or things like what happened in Colorado would be happening all over the place. You just don’t see it, so you don’t know. A lot of what we do you wouldn’t want to know about or see. In addition, why do you think it is often considered a more serious crime to kill a cop than an ordinary citizen? Because we are YOUR representative protecting OUR way of life, because WE are the sheepdogs who take on the wolves and stop them. It is our system, it is a good but not perfect system, but we are your neighbors and your protectors. Most of us become cops to help people. With the break down of societal norms and morals, the police are caught right in the crosshairs themselves and often find themselves walking a razor edge between trying to tell good guys from bad. So, for them its easier these days to simply just cut to the chase and view everyone as a possible threat. This is a dangerous mentality to have but it is the challenge to every law enforcement officer across the land. On the surface this looks like a total overkill in use of their power and authority. Our police is starting to resemble the East German Stasi more and more for each year. My response would be much like yours 10 years ago, but I must day that I don’t feel safe when I see police anymore, as they are paid to harass us and shake us down for silly traffic tickets, and nuisance things. Though it is not the individual police officer’s fault that their job calls for them to harass people, and that courts keep letting out the violent offenders after the polices catch them, so that the police officers has to face the same creeps again and again.
We can make the police’s job easier, and make the police not as hated
by:
1. Decriminalize drug use, and let out the prisoners that are incarcerated for drug use.
2. Keep violent criminals incarcerated longer!
The fact that the police has to face the crazy people that have shown before to be violent, does make them more paranoid, and frustrated.
One cannot justify the criminalization of drug users any more than we can criminalize people that drink alcohol. One can say that people smoking crack tend to be violent, we can say the same thing about someone that is drunk, as I am sure that most of us have encountered in our life.
If we think that it is the government’s job to protect us from ourselves! Once we give that job the the government, we are on the way to tyranny.

By putting their kids on the firing lines, the police are both more hesitant to take justified actions to control the mob of rioters, and more likely once they do, to create a visually disturbing image for the media. A win-win! And if any kids do get hurt, it is a major victory for the cause, and then the parents will just take them to the local emergency room for free medical care, and then a followup call to a LaRaza attourny for a muli-million dollar lawsuit… another big WIN-WIN!
If you just internalize the fact that radicals and revolutionaries simply do not value life or an orderly society, then their actions and likely goals become clear.

When OUR police force starts protecting the CITIZENS like we pay them to do and not working for the criminal elite, only then will they be treated accordingly! Many of you seem to think that when you protest against something, the police have every right to behave this way. I’m a Tea Party supporter and I can see a time in the near future when the police will pull this on peaceful Tea Party rallies.
Don’t be fooled again!
Tea!

Kind of like a person who is bad with money and always overdraws their bank account; they tend to “hate banks”.

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 11:32pmExactly. I always see it as a red flag if a person “hates cops”. It usually means they are, or have been up to no good. I am 50 years old, and never had a bad experience with law enforcement because I have always obeyed the laws.

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 8:59pmNot that I’m giving support for either side in this. I can say that we could see this coming. With corruption becoming more and more prevalent in everyday police forces and less of a stigma. The people will only stand for so much… Much like the Boston Massacre. One shot set it off. I’m sure with the world becoming so corrupt, it’s harder to keep honor and integrity as a police officer. But they must! Things will only get worse if they allow corruption to rule and never punishing bad police.

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 8:54pmIf u idiots think these cops use excessive force then just wait till obozo starts deploying the new marine corps law enforcement battalions. Soldiers are trained to shoot first and ask later. Quit treating these cops like criminals or u may get what u ask for. There is no common sense in the communists.

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 9:04pmYou’d be okay w/Marines. They may shoot what moves, but they actually are trained to think abt it first. Marines – old or new – won’t open up on Americans.

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 9:37pmTrue, but then they are put in a pretty tough situation… do what the commander in chief and your senior officers tell you to do, or… what?
The big question is, how will our honorable soldiers and marines respond to the “community defenders”, protecting their towns and neighborhoods from looters… Lets hope the vet NCO’s learned enough from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan to teach their troops that just because a man has a rifle slung, doesn‘t mean he’s an enemy combatant!

Posted on July 24, 2012 at 1:42amThey are criminals. That Cop dropped, from what I understand, an unarmed man to his knees and shot him in the back of the head. They should be treated as per their actions. People in other countries are labeled terrorists, and terrorist organizations, for doing such things. Why not them? They do not deserve a pass and are not special. There is such a thing as State Sponsored Terrorism, and that is what that is. Murder is never legal. It doesn’t matter if he is a legal or illegal immigrant, people in the Military or any other thing are never allowed to murder people. Defense and Murder are two different things. Defense doesn‘t allow for someone shooting an unarmed Civilian in the back and executing them while they’re running away, and niether does the Laws of War or any other Law.
