Public Health Experts Reportedly Targeting Gun Violence as ‘Social Disease’

Public Health Experts Targeting Gun Violence as Public Health Issue

(The Blaze/AP) — Is a gun like a virus, tobacco or alcohol?  According to “public health experts,“ who in the wake of recent mass shootings are calling for a fresh look at gun violence as a ”social disease,” it is.

What we need, they say, is a “public health approach” to the problem.

Dr. Garen Wintemute of University of California, Davis claims it is no longer enough to tackle gun violence by focusing solely on the people doing the shooting.  Dr. Stephen Hargarten, who treated victims of the Sikh temple shootings at the emergency department he heads in Milwaukee, feels the same way.

“What I’m struggling with is, is this the new social norm?” he asked, before asserting: “This is what we’re going to have to live with if we have more personal access to firearms.”

He continued: “We have a public health issue to discuss. Do we wait for the next outbreak or is there something we can do to prevent it?”

About 260 million to 300 million firearms are owned by civilians in the United States; about one-third of American homes have one.  Last year, 55 percent of Americans said gun laws should either remain the same or become more lenient.

Public Health Experts Targeting Gun Violence as Public Health Issue

Certain elements of the “public health approach” to gun control include:

-“Host” factors: What makes someone more likely to shoot, or someone more likely to be a victim. One recent study found firearm owners are more likely than those with no firearms at home to binge drink or drink and drive, the AP reports.

-Disease patterns, observing how a problem spreads. Gun ownership – a precursor to gun violence – can spread “much like an infectious disease circulates,” said Daniel Webster, a health policy expert and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research in Baltimore.

“There’s sort of a contagion phenomenon” after a shooting, where people feel they need to have a gun for protection or retaliation, he said.

If gun control is now part of “public health,“ will it become the responsibility of the government to monitor the issue like any other ”infectious disease”?

One commenter wrote that he would prefer if the “experts” stuck to medicine, rather than trying to “socially engineer” our way to a healthier society.

Associated Press writer Pete Yost in Washington contributed to this report.

What really blows my mind is that they would try to use Sikhs to push this crap. I don’t think it would go over well in the Sikh community that owning weapons is a social disease… considering the men have to carry a sword as a part of their religion.

Wow, they try to sound all scientific, but left out that blacks make up 12 % of our population, and commit 50% of the nation’s murders. If blacks murdered at the same rate as whites, we would have one of the lowest murder rates in the world, and it would be 32% lower that what it currently is

I think it would be more accurate to say we have a black murder problem, and that the majority of those getting murdered are also black.

When you study it more in depth, you will find black raised by both parents, have the same murder rate as whites.

They might do well to study the effects of welfare, multicultural education, and rap music. They will go much further that way, but well all know the PC police would put a stop to doing anything real.

I wonder how much of this I will see in the up coming weeks. Gun control is so easy to rip apart. With just history and numbers. No one who can think and knows some history can loose the debate. You can just use the UK number from before gun control and after and win a debate.

Owning a gun is now not only a disease, but it is also contagious. Homosexuality is perfectly normal, though.

IF you own a gun, you are more likely to shoot someone. You better believe it. Criminals beware, I have this disease and if you break into my home, this disease may cause me to shoot you.

Hey – that’s it! We are responsible for shooting anyone. The disease made me do it!

As usual, you nail the issue. Murder is a lack of good moral & ethical values, combined with a lack of self control. If we can re-enforce good values and self control in at-risk youth in the black community, we might be able to drop murders by 30%. Well worth a few extra bucks out of my own pocket, if we could just get a proper plan up an running that didn’t involve the progressive-statist government dependency.

I have owned guns since my 8th birthday in 1949. The only time I have pointed a gun at a human being or shot at a human being was when I served in the US Army for 23 years.
I have always had guns in my home and made sure that my children knew what they were and how to use them. My wife, myself and two of our daughters are licensed to carry concealed. Our sons would also be licensed but the live in states that have restricted laws. All the kids hunt and own shotguns and rifles and none of them have ever shot at another person.
These so called scientists are full bull manure and have a bad case of cranial rectalitus (having your head up your a**).
How do these guys feel about the use of firerarms by the military? Armed citizens made this country what it is and secured the freedoms that allow these guys to spout this nonsense.

(Public Health Experts Reportedly Targeting Gun Violence as ‘Social Disease’)

Accidental Deaths: Doctors vs. Gun Owners

There are approximately 700,000 physicians in the US who cause approximately 100,000 adverse drug reaction (ADR) deaths and 200,000 deaths annually. Some reports estimate more than 800,000 preventable deaths annually. But if we accept a conservative estimate of 120,000 preventable deaths annually, the accidental death rate per physician would be 0.171.

Conversely, there are 80 million gun owners in the US who cause approximately 1,500 accidental deaths annually. This means that the rate of accidental death per gun owner is .000188.

This means that, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more likely to accidentally kill someone than gun owners.

Let’s look at it this way: 1) We all agree (basically) that the ones who want our guns are actually the very same introverts or anti-social children who did not play in the same sandbox with us. Remember those kids who were shy? Why became of them?

They ended up as “lawyers”, “politicians”, “accountants” – even members of the media – one kid was black and had big ears, even had a funny name and now his is the POTUS. So they grew up much like the Israelis; where the name of the game is CONTROL once out of the fear zone: “Now I am in a position where I won’t be laughed at or judged…” is what might race through their minds, but they are still the same kids who never played in the same sandbox with “U.S.” as children.

They were safe at home; behind books – now they lead the majority of “U.S.”. Speaking of being scared! The tables have turned!

So the new “50s” age group is taking over, and most of the Department of Homeland Security administration and leadership are women – look for yourselves: They want our children to “behave”; not to experience freedom and happiness – but rather to depend on government and 20 minute delays for 911 calls to be dealt with, when all along, we (I) could have done better to invite these same kids years ago to come and be a friend and go to places where we learned how to shoot guns and use them responsibly.

It’s my fault, darn it! But let me try to fix it: (Waving my arms toward Washington: “Hey! DHS

It’s a disease alright: A disease caused by the removal of Biblical morality being taught in the schools. A disease caused by the plethora of video games with violent content. A disease caused by the fact that proper behavior and social skills are not being taught in the home. A disease caused by the liberal establishment who says any method is ok as long as it feels good to you. A disease caused by the total lack of respect for you fellow man. A disease promulgated by the very “Scientists” who publish such tripe. Scientists who say hat disciplining your child will hurt his/her self esteem. Scientists who say spare the rod and spoil the child, not the other way around as the Bible states.

It’s high time we told those so called “Experts” to move to France. The French and most of Europe have lived by these standards for years and see what they have now.

Gee, if this is a “disease” caused by the proximity of guns, then why isn’t it a problem in Switzerland — where everybody has a gun? I suspect it’s a problem caused by an imbalance of guns — that is, some people have guns and others don’t. The obvious solution is to “immunize” the population, by giving everybody a gun — and thorough training with it — from an early age, like the Swiss.

As a surgeon, I for one just want to say this has NOTHING to do with medicine or “social diseases” and everything to do with a political ideology disguised to lQQk like something else. However, with the every increasing intrusion by government into health related issues it is understandable why they want to use medicine as another vehicle to bring pressure upon the issue from another avenue. Many gun control advocates see the recent violence as an opportunity to seize and capitalize on the emotions surrounding the tragedies to try and gain momentum among the populace for their position, especially the impressionable and often parentally unguided youth. I find it interesting that death from drunk driving has always hovered around 2000 more than gun violence in the US and drunk driving is illegal with heavy penalties and fines, but the problem has not ever really curtailed. I also find it interesting that no one is purposing new, more stringent laws regarding alcohol consumption or bans given its “social disease” model.

Now based on what those two Liberal Trash ( I do not care if they are educated, genius Doctors) are saying gays should be controlled and if they have a AIDS OR ARE HIV INFECTED there should be in place a system from preventing them infecting others. If they decide to declare this a health care issue, no problem. The HHS Secretary can force insurance companies to deny coverage to people who own firearms, forcing them to pay the no insurance “tax” or get rid of their guns. (Oh, and if you refuse to answer the gun question, coverage is denied. If you lie, you go to jail for insurance fraud.) No need for Congress, no need to amend the constitution, heck, you do not even need the FBI or ATF, just the IRS to enforce it.. And, as a side benefit, they get the names and every person who owns a gun.

What is wrong with someone that wants to protect themselves from nuts and criminals?
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
“One recent study found firearm owners are more likely than those with no firearms at home to binge drink or drink and drive, the AP reports.” And that means what?

That means a study was “invented” to indicate what was wanted…that gun owners are dangerous and they should be watched.

This doctor should stick to medicating himself!

All crime is hate. All criminal violence is social disease. Speech is not crime. Simple. Now where’s my government grant money for solving these woes of our modern society? actually, you know what, give it back to who ever you took it from in the first place.

If it’s a social disease, what about hunters, security personnel, LEOs, military personnel, and other groups whose job entails carrying a gun? Shouldn’t they be protected from this contagion as well, or do we not care about them? lol Talk about a load of bull.

Nope, guns just help us stave off the social(ist) disease if and when they decide to kill those who will not bend to their diseased minds. Violence is what good Americans prevent by not allowing themselves to become victims of the violence of hipocrit criminals.

Bingo. Beliefs, values, perceptions, fads and fasions, all spread like a “social desease.“ ”They” know this, and they manuipulate to the nth degree trying to modify the body politic. From speech codes to “hate crimes” and the whole gambit of political correctness, this is the Marxist approach to the human condition. If a little old lady throws a rock thorugh a store window, folks like these are primarly concerned with who “incited” her to throw that rock–because the idea of individual volition and free will is alian to them. They percieve humanity only as a collective made up of collectives, and analyate the individual in the process. It’s a dark, evil anti-American worldview that is the polar opposite of Liberty, and there is ample reason to be terrified of it.

Not sure about your “jokin” based on a few of your other posts but I liked this quote the best. :-)

“God’s desire is that these people turn from their wicked ways …HIS death on the cross was for ALL people, even Paul who was the WORST of sinners.”

I agree with this completely, 4TRUTH! I wasn’t hating anyone…..and I try to live my life without hate. My thoughts are society shouldn’t be accepting sin and calling it good. In the subject matter of this discussion….my fear is that the society who does accept sin potentially shares the same fate as Sodom and Gomorrah.

I also don’t think society should accept abortion, adultery, divorce…..just to name a few other sins. Adding acceptance of gay marriage to our culture surely drives this country further from God’s will.

To add context to this discussion. Up until the early 1970′s, homosexuality was considered a mental illness. Militant gays, with the help of liberal, destructive Bill Ayers-types, fought, threatened and ostracized psychiatrist to change that illness designation. We are now living out the result of that modified designation. Culturally, that was the first step in our “accepting the sin”….and we did that under the umbrella of “tolerance”.

Thus, my original point was……our 2nd Amendment right is being stripped by starting to consider gun ownership as a “social disease” while our cultures accepts an actual social disease.

      Blessings upon you!

      Yo CoPatriots:

My apologies for my attempt at humor not being obvious.
Please, give me an example of a post that you found questionable as to who I am.
I have a whole bunch of articles from Time magazine about the “science” of our genes, and you can find them everywhere in the world of evolution. They always try to explain away sin as you are most probably aware … I was only alluding in humor to this … I don’t really like to use the word sarcasm, but there ya go.
Concerning the rest of your comments … we be on the same page.
This story is complete silliness with sinister intentions, and the one about the Dem’s making the acceptance of homosexuality part of the parties postion; utter foolisness. Many SHOULD leave the party because of this. We CANNOT servive as a nation doing these things.
Again, my apologies for you thinking that I spoke harshly toward you.

The real social disease is people who have no values or morals andwho take no responsibility for the problems and disappointments in their lives. Everyone is bullied at some time in their life-deal with it, get over it and move on. Some people are more successful than others–that is life. No one owes anyone anything – the only person who can take care of you is you. But no–liberals don’t want anyone to be responsible for themselves becausethen they might not be re-elected to the polticial jobs where they can rape and pillage the US taxpayer. Cram your social disease.
