(The Blaze/AP) — Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.
Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.
At her peak in the 1980s and `90s, Houston the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world’s best-selling artists.
Among her hits were “How Will I Know,“ ”Saving All My Love for You“ and ”I Will Always Love You.” She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies like “The Bodyguard.”
But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.
Before Super Bowl XXV and in midst of the Persian Gulf War, Houston sang the national anthem, which has since been heralded as one of the best performances in the history of the event.
UPDATE (9:03 p.m.)
The Los Angeles Times has confirmed that Houston’s body was found at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. Cause of death is still unknown. Houston was to be among the A-list performers planning to attend veteran music mogul Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
UPDATE (9:13 p.m.)
CNN is reporting that police say Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. pacific time and there had been unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate.
UPDATE (9:19 p.m.)
AP Video on Houston’s death and career:
UPDATE (9:27 p.m.)
(AP) Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen told KABC-TV that Houston died in her room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton. Her body remained in the hotel and Beverly Hills detectives were investigating. Houston’s publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the cause of her death was unknown.
UPDATE (9:36 p.m.)
Flo Anthony is reporting on Fox News Channel that Houston was found in the bath tub of her hotel room by her brother Michael, cause of death is still unknown. Ray J, a rapper who has been connected to Houston, was not in the room.
UPDATE (9:45 p.m.)
PEOPLE reports that upon hearing the news of Houston’s death, her ex-husband Bobby Brown began immediately calling friends and family.
“He wanted to tell everyone about it before it hit the news,” one of his relatives tells PEOPLE. “He didn’t want any of us to hear about it on television.”
As Brown spoke to family members, the shock of Houston’s sudden death turned to grief. “He could hardly get the words out when he called me,” says the relative. “He was sobbing, and by the end of the call, I was sobbing too. He’s beside himself right now.”
Brown has had no official comment on the death of Houston. Brown is in Memphis, where he is currently located for a New Edition concert.
UPDATE (10:16 p.m.)
The Los Angeles Times reports that paramedics performed CPR for about 20 minutes before declaring the pop star dead. Authorities said they don’t have a cause of death.

Report Post »Or aspirin, or the chemicals the make your brain do what it does for that matter–how do you think drugs work? The answer is by affecting biochemistry; many of these so-called illicit “drugs” are simply materials your body produces naturally and needs–drugs simply change the balances, and in fact whether they are “good” or “bad” in their effects is totally subjective because it requires a judgment as to what is a “desirable” state of chemical balance–do we say that people are “bad” because they take aspirin to modify their biochemistry and alleviate a headache? No. How is that different than eating chocolate to release dopamine, or a cigarette or joint to do the same thing?

I was going to say that perhaps she was reading the Ebony magazine article about Samuel L. Jackson saying that he only voted for Obama because he was black and she choked on some food she was eating and no one with her knew the Heimlich maneuver.
Instead, I said a Monk saying that has a lot of meaning if you think about it. Once you are born are destined to die… birth is always the “first cause” of death. You can’t escape it; it’s a Law. It’s what you make of Life that keeps living and sets one apart from death. Drug use is not a legacy one should leave as a reminder to one’s Life work and everyone is assuming drugs as the “cause of death”. A Monk always thinks of “first cause” first….. just a habit I guess.

The problem with your theory is there’s no good that comes of drug use but guns can save lives.
Guns are just tools as are knives, clubs and bricks, anything could can be used to take a life.
Drugs fall into temptations like alcohol, gambling and philandering. It all depends on the human weakness, some can control their use or practices and some can’t.

You‘re implying that drugs can’t save lives. What I’m saying is that it depends on the implementation of the tool. Any tool, misused, has the potential to be a tool of the Devil.
It’s the misuse that causes the problem, not the use.

Satan is constantly at work trying to destroy that image. She and millions of others have given over freewill to the enemy and thus given themselves over to death apart from Gods eternity in Heaven. Few find the road to salvation because that road is narrow and few find it, but the road to destruction is wide and many will travel there.
Don’t attack Whitney but Evil!
Evil comes at us in blinding beauty. Jesus came as a extremely humble man, in a manger, from a town no one cared much about, a carpenters son, he was never described as appearing beautiful. Learn the differences people and fast.

The Branching of the Road….
When you come to the place where the branch in the road is quite apparent, you cannot go ahead. You must go either one way or the other. For now if you go straight ahead, the way you went before you reached the branch, you will go nowhere. The whole purpose of coming this far was to decide which branch you will take now. The way you came no longer matters. It can no longer serve.
No one who reaches this far can make the wrong decision, but he can delay. And there is no part of the journey that seems more hopeless and futile than standing where the road branches, and not deciding on which way to go.
It is but the first few steps along the right way that seem hard, for you have chosen, although you still may think you can go back and make the other choice. This is not so. A choice made with the power of Heaven to uphold it cannot be undone. Your way is decided. There will be nothing you will not be told, if you acknowledge this.
And so you and your brother stand, here in this holy place, before the veil of sin that hangs between you and the face of Christ. Let it be lifted! Raise it together, for it is but a veil that stands between you. Either alone will see it as a solid block, nor realize how thin the drapery that separates you now. Yet it is almost over in your awareness, and peace has reached you even here, before the veil.
She choose the wrong path but, will surely return again to choose again.

No reputable doctor would not give out Narcotics without a serious need and even then it’s only in limited amounts. Yes, there are those who fail their oath but there are bad apples in every bunch. That’s the price of a free society, people need to be responsible for their actions and if they do harm to others they should pay the price.

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 10:09am@Miami I’m against all drugs, even legal ones. See my other comments below. As with alcohol, of course, whenever anything is abused and used to cause harm to others, or to endanger the public peace, Law Enforcement should detain those who act violent or transgress the rights of others, bring them to trial, and have Judges rule the matter with exact judgement, and without respect to persons (status, occupation, education, etc.). Drugs are drugs though. One kid can get an over the counter medicine, or even spray can of some sort, get high on it, and if he over does it, can die. It comes down to personal responsibility. If anything should be done, it should be what this preacher did:

If she asked Jesus to forgive her he will – not sure if all the so called people who say they are Christians will forgive her, but that doesn’t matter – God is the only one that counts.

Not sure where you are coming from. W. Houston does not need my forgiveness, she never wronged me. I do hope she was a christian, and is in peace. I have no desire for anyone to experience hell.
The book of James tell us that you will know Christian by their works, and from what I see (and my sight is limited) Houston was not living a life know for Christian works. Grace saves, works shows that you are saved.
I think you missed the point of many on here. We do no celebrate the death of a Houston a Michale Jackson, or the rest of the MTV crowd. We do see America as having a sickness, where we celebrate and make heroes of evil and miserable people (on drugs, molesters of children….) and we ignore real heroes who live regular lives, but do great things for their fellow man and nation.
If a war hero dies today, it is not national news. If a career police officers gets killed in the line of duty, it does not make news like Houston or another MTV personalities death. When a local pastor who pastored one church for 40 years, and spent a life time helping the common man, and seeing souls saved, does the media care? or do regular american care? It seems we are preoccupied with rock and rollers and sports people and actors from Hollywood.
On a parallel, I can not turn on the news without hearing about Kardishians, J -Lo, Brittany, Lohan…… and a whole hose of other dope heads and losers. It is a sign of the times in which we live.

Hey, if we outlaw alcohol again, there would be no alcoholics either, right? Prohibition worked so well, after all. Oh, wait. No, it just created a bunch of murderous bootleggers (the Kennedy fortune comes to mind), and there were still plenty of alcoholics. Now alcohol is legal, is taxed heavily, and benefits your apparent love of government. You don’t offer a solution, you just call names because you have no solution. @RepubliCorp Murder is an act made against another person (an offense made against the people), and is punishable by a Court of Law, and requires justice or restitution. Unlike murder, even Doctors, Institutions, and Corporations are given license to practice the use of Drugs, create new ones, or experiment with existing ones. Unlike murder, these same folks are given permission to sale and prescribe drugs to other parties, or to buy or receive drugs. Don‘t confuse actual crimes made against humanity with an individual’s plain stupidity or irresponsible behavior.

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 1:02am@JJCoolay I understand your argument, and would also like some drugs to stay illegal, or heavily regulated, but I would leave this authority to the States, and not the federal Government, per the powers enumerated in the Constitution. Beside this, to play devil’s advocate here, many countries have lowered or eliminated the drinking age for alcoholic beverages and have actually seen a decrease in teen use and other behaviors related to drinking. I still think the Government’s intent for these drug laws, to decrease use and improve society, have clearly failed. This responsibility lies on the people, not the Government. Common ground here is, let the States decide the prohibition, restriction and regulation of these matters, and keep the federal Government out of it. Our federal Judges should be dealing with federal matters found in the Constitution, not originating from social progressives or politics.

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 10:16am@RepubliCorp That’s taking what I said out of context.

I stay healthy, active, and informed. I haven’t gone to the Doctor in years, and when I did last go, it was for an ankle injury while playing sports. I’m 23 years old, and I understand that my Life and Happiness depends on me alone and no one else. Those are my Rights, given to me by God. It’s my responsibility and duty to protect, preserve and defend them against all threats or assaults. I cannot blame another man, or society, for my ills or downfalls. God has given me every power and talent needed to succeed, prosper and excel, and enough encouragement and guidance by his Word to pickup my self up and to continue on along a righteous path. I got family, friends, neighbors, and my community to help me out with anything I might need assistance in. I don’t need the Government to interfere. As a Christian nation, it’s our responsibility, and command from God, as a people, to restore and love such a person who is in need of help or assistance. Report Post »(Insert pop star name here) dies in a plane crash: Damn you, Wright brothers. Ban it!
And, my personal favorite…
David Carradine chokes himself to death while jerking it: Damn you, masturbation! Ban it!
Reasonable people know life is a fragile gift and one we cannot keep. You wanna p!ss it away w/drugs? Hey, go for it. I encourage you to pursue your hobby with gusto.
Busybodies and complicit govt. are more dangerous than drugs. Hell, I can argue you must ban ballpoint pens with the “it might be and has been dangerous” argument. Do yourself a favor and read on WHY pot was criminalized. Look into a man named Harry Anslinger. He had some very interesting comments on why pot needed to be demonized and criminalized… especially when it came to black folks. The history of prohibition is not pretty and not based on reason or fact.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 4:09amDrug abuse, addiction and all other collateral damage would just go away, if those “busy bodies” would “just legalize it” and learn to profit off the wreckage.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 8:22pmThis poor girl. The adoration and appreciation of her beautiful music and voice by so many of us flew in the face of her ability to find peace and happiness and stay off drugs. Her songs were life-changing for many. I pray she is with God tonight and finally at peace. She and her beautiful gift will be deeply missed.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 8:22pmShe had class once (AND MAN COULD SHE SING)…
Then she met Bobby Brown/drugs… probably feeling she had to be in with the hip-hop crowd to seem credible within the Black community.
Well, that’s my take on it.

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 4:30pmNot just nice-amazing. The first time I heard her sing, I stopped what I was doing to listen to her pitch, her clarity and range. I was stunned by the beauty. I have been singing all my life, even at 66 it is part of my daily life, and I was blown away at her gift. I was saddened at her life later on, but no one on this blog is her judge, for which I am gratefull. God in His infinite mercy, is. She has a place I am sure where her voice, in all it’s beauty is being heard. Fitting her last public song was “Yes, Jesus loves me”. What more could be said. God bless her family.

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 2:12pmDrugs weren’t responsible… poor character and lack of responsibility for her own actions is what we can blame this on.
