‘Put Up Or Shut Up’: Romney Calls Harry Reid Out on Sean Hannity’s Show As Reid Doubles Down

Tonight, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released yet another statement affirming his belief that former Massachusetts Governor and GOP nominee Mitt Romney didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years.

Reid claims he had an “extremely credible source” to back this argument up, though he still hasn’t named this person. Rush Limbaugh has already suggested that Reid may be committing a crime of his own by not revealing who this source is, and indeed, the secrecy involved is almost comparable to…well, the secrecy surrounding Romney’s tax returns. However, Romney isn‘t using his tax returns to try and smear someone else’s reputation and Reid is.

Politico flagged Reid’s statement, which can be read in full here:

“There is a controversy because the Republican presidential nominee, Governor Mitt Romney, refuses to release his tax returns. As I said before, I was told by an extremely credible source that Romney has not paid taxes for ten years. People who make as much money as Mitt Romney have many tricks at their disposal to avoid paying taxes. We already know that Romney has exploited many of these loopholes, stashing his money in secret, overseas accounts in places like Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

“Last weekend, Governor Romney promised that he would check his tax returns and let the American people know whether he ever paid a rate lower than 13.9 percent.  One day later, his campaign raced to say he had no intention of putting out any further information.

“When it comes to answering the legitimate questions the American people have about whether he avoided paying his fair share in taxes or why he opened a Swiss bank account, Romney has shut up. But as a presidential candidate, it’s his obligation to put up, and release several years’ worth of tax returns just like nominees of both parties have done for decades.

“It’s clear Romney is hiding something, and the American people deserve to know what it is. Whatever Romney’s hiding probably speaks volumes about how he would approach issues that directly impact middle-class families, like tax reform and the economy. When you are running for president, you should be an open book.

“I understand Romney is concerned that many people, Democrats and Republicans, have been calling on him to release his tax returns. He has so far refused. There is only one thing he can do to clear this up, and that’s release his tax returns.”

One wonders if observers of this whole scuffle will begin positing outlandish potential sources that Reid could have learned this information from. After all, under Reid’s standard, there really is nothing to prevent such speculation, since the burden of proof would be on him to show that it wasn’t true.

Romney, for his part, has shown an uncharacteristic amount of cheek in response to Reid’s accusation, telling the majority leader to “put up or shut up” on Sean Hannity’s radio show today:

      Romney won’t release his tax statements. If he did it would show that he’s payed little or no taxes for the last 10 years, although he was quickly becoming a billionaire. The average person, including even Tea Party members couldn’t relate to that, despite the “job creator” crap.

      If Romney released his tax returns, as every other Presidential aspriant has for the last 60 years, he’d lose the election. He knows that, and you know that. Even people who hate Obama are afraid of what of what they‘d see in Romney’s tax returns.

      Very good point. The problem as we see with this article and many others we arent talking about Obama. We are talking about Romney and his tax returns. If Romney releases them, everyone goes back to focusing on Obama’s failures.

      Nope, not afraid at all of what’s in there. And not many care, either.
      He will release them JZS, just when the time is right, that’s all. He’s not stupid.

      Then you will see nothing more than you would see in John Kerry’s returns, or Timmy’s, or Nancy’s, or Harry’s, or Weiner’s, or Wrangle’s, or Boxer’s, or the Guams gonna tip over guy’s, or the $90,000.00 in the freezer guy’s, or John Edward’s, etc, etc, etc. Oh, and let’s not forget Buffet, Immelt.

      And on a smaller scale, I bet even your returns JZSaul.

      You will find he does as most all citizens do JZSaul, they find every way possible to legally pay the least amount of taxes possible per the myriad of tax laws passed by those very politicians. Nobody knowingly pays more taxes than required by law.

      And there is nothing wrong with that. Why do you think there are so many tax lawyers out there making all that scratch?

      Actually though, I should not have included some of those democrats in my list.
      That’s because some of those democrats have actually been found to have been cheating on their taxes.

      There’s a big difference in paying no taxes LEGALLY and REFUSING to pay taxes that are due.

      It is quite possible Romney paid no taxes and is completely legal.
      That is how the system is set up.
      I’m not saying the system is RIGHT, but as long as it is legal, I won’t condemn him for doing it.
      Many will however, and the OBAMA camp will attempt to make it appear illegal, regardless of the truth.

      This would even be a great way for Romney to show the people how truely screwed up the system is, if he handles it right.
      Yes, it will cost him some real money, but he can afford it.
      If he wants to show he is really concerned about right/wrong he could make this a real benefit, albeit at a substantaal cost financially.

      Then again, ALL politicians could make rules/laws to show they really care, but as those rules would only benefit the “common folk” and finances of the country by taking power/privileges away from politicians, I figure the odds are pretty low.

      If Mitt Romney had done anything illegal, don’t you think the IRS would have already auditted him? Who is in charge of the IRS? Obama and Holder? Maybe they are waiting until October? I would think all of this information is available to the administration.
      I like Mitt Romney. I will vote for him. I hope he has made a ton of money! I will bet he has donated more to his church and charity than the total amount donated by all the Democrats in the House, Senate, and White House combined.
      AND. He will win by a landslide. There is a massive wave of voters coming. Chick-fil-a anyone?

      Comrades this whole tax thing is nonsense. Are you really so oblivious to what is happening in this country that you think Dear Leader didn’t require the IRS, FBI, and probably even the NSA to inspect Romney with a fine tooth comb?
      If you actually think that, then you had better wake up! Dear Leader and his crowd are playing for keeps! This isn’t a game, its a coup!
      IF there is an election this November, and I do mean IF, you had better wake up and vote Dear Leader out! If you don’t, and he wins, then that election will be the last meaningful election this country will ever have because we will be a totalitarian police state.

      Reid should be brought up on corruption charges when no source is produced. Reid is not a journalist and can’t hide behind the 1st amendment in protecting his source. More over Romney should say he’ll rteveal his taxes even after Reid is charged for corruption IF OBAMA RELEASES ALL HIS COLLEGE RECORDS AND THE PASSPORT HE USED TO GO TO PAKISTAN IN 1981 WHEN NO AMERICAN COULD TRAVEL TO PAKISTAN

      Yes and why exactly do you think people use overseas accounts. For full disclosure LOL. As an independent voter I am interested to see if Romney is a cliche wealthy scofflaw who hides behind trusts, tax loopholes and offshore holdings for the SOLE purpose of minimizing his tax burden. I would also like to know how it is possible for anyone to shield $100 in an IRA. Which of course he can borrow from today, but pay no taxes until he retires. Spin it anyway you like but this is a clear question of citizenship, character and community. Romney reflects the “me” focus that is the fundamental difference between the current generation and our parents and grandparents. The individuals who paid more taxes so the current generation had good schools, affordable college, nice communities, solid infrastructure, great parks, etc. etc. But way too many in this generation are more interested in their ideology, their beliefs, their rights, their stuff. Everything but the community at large.

If the PRESIDENT or the VICE PRESIDENT had utilized offshore accounts, trusts, IRA manipulation and other scofflaw tricks to hide income from taxation you would be one of the people with the rope ready to lynch them. As George Wil has pointed out Romney is for sure hiding something and has calculated that the risk of releasing his taxes is higher than not releasing them. Why not just admit that the only positive thing you can say about Romney is that he is not Obama.

      You know what is so hilarious about all this “paying taxes” nonsense? The half that pay NO federal income taxes at all…..ZERO….once the Earned Income Tax Credit is applied to what was withheld from thier paychecks throughout the year……it is that bunch that is so snarly angry about what Romney did or did not pay. Ummm if you paid no federal income tax at all…then you have no horse in this race.

      All the Democratic party is trying to do is convince the half that paid nothing…their own political base….that rich people need to pay more. What a childish argument it really is. And frankly the last time I checked…a persons tax return information is supposed to be held with a great deal of privacy & security…..so how is it that Harry Reid knows one single thing about Mitt Romney’s tax returns?       But if they were any good at communicating, it would offer Romney many advantages:
      -Show how much money has been given to charity
      -Show how many millions he has paid to the government
      -End the secrecy

      Knight Templar, I do not think anyone disagrees with you on Obama and his lack of transparency, we all know that Obama is a POS and very likely was not eligible to be POTUS, but I believe there are so many progressives on both sides of the aisle that are the same, we could say the same thing about most.

      Romney’s father, George Romney, when he ran for the Republican nomination, presented 12 years of tax returns and said he believed that all who run for POTUS should do the same. Romney, above all others, should honor his fathers request and just do it. The only reason for not doing so, is he has something to hide, but by not doing so, causes mistrust. He already is having a hard time exciting a base for his run for POTUS.

    Instead of this continuing to be a issue Romney should release his tax returns. As Romney said the White House doesnt want to talk about the other issues, well cut this issue out from under them. Dont give them a leg to stand on.

      Yeah I love Romney comment about the White House not wanting to talk about certain issues. Keeping this story alive is keep Romney from talking about those same issues. Neither offer solutions, just more of the same garbage.

      When Romney gets curb stomped in November for not showing a real difference between himself and Obama maybe then some of these people will listen to us.

      Why should he do it? Well Romney said it himself. The Democrats want to talk about anything but the real issues. Why give them this issue to talk about. Cut it out from under them. Hell since Romney cannot really talk about the real issues either I guess its better for both sides to talk about this up until the election. Oh and gay marriage, bullying, who ate a dog, and whacky churches.

    Romney should not have to release his income tax returns until such a time it becomes profitable to do so.

    There is profit in distracting his opponents to waste time on this unimportant topic, just as Obama did with his birth certificate.

    However the time might be ripe. Don’t just tell Reid to put up or shut up, up the stakes on the Senator from the legal gambling state. In exchange for proof Reid is wrong, Reid must fall on his sword and immediately resign from the Senate. This is a totally fair exchange as Reid’s deceit is solely to keep Romney out of the White House.

    It is entirely possible that Reid’s claim is true. Most of the Romneys’ annual income is investment income that can take advantage, LEGALLY, of the great number of loopholes present in the convoluted mess of the U. S. tax code. This code of course was created by Congress. So, Senator, I’m not sure what you are complaining about. That wealthy folks in America have figured out how to legally maximize their earnings? How long have you been serving in Congress, with an opportunity to close the loopholes and streamline our tax system? I can’t fault Romney for doing the smart thing in managing his investments, and I can certainly see why he wouldn’t want to advertise the fact that he was so good at by releasing his returns for the past 10 years. Why? Because a few of would admire his business savvy, but the left would turn it around and use it to paint him as tycoon out of touch with America.

    Reid has become comic relief. Stooping to accusations without providing a credible source raises doubts and will cause many a democrat to dig for the truth. They will want to prove him right but how much truth will they find in the process that Obama will not want uncovered. They are in a hole and still digging. No diversion big enough to evade Obama’s ineptitude. Reid will be hoist with his own petard.

      If Romney soon doesn’t release them its likely he has something to hide that makes him out of touch with normal Americans which will hurt his election chances. Obama maybe a mess but he can atleast fool Americans into thinking he is somewhat in touch but Romney can’t even appear to do that. all he does is bash the presidents record without telling much of his alternative if he even has one.

    If Romney didn’t pay taxes for 10 years, I bet it was legal. If Sen. Reid has a problem with that, then congress needs to change the laws. If he did something illegal, then I’m sure Gov. Romney will be hearing from the IRS.

      Right. Reid’s quote is that Romney takes advantage of LEGAL loopholes and whatnot….Which Romney undoubtably does (or did).

      My problem is that Romney has advocated continuing the current tax code (with all of it’s complex loopholes) instead of a flat tax or a fair tax. The problem with independents is that it is really shady on Romney’s part to be so secretive. They probably dont care about college transcripts, but they do care about a corrupt tax code that nobody likes and favors the wealthy

      It’s not a matter of being legal, it’s a matter of paying a rediculously low percentage of his income in taxes while people who actually work for salary have to pay a lot more. It‘s a matter of the presidential candidate thinking it’s OK for him to pay lower taxes simply because he doesn’t work for his money, he lets his money work for him. It’s not like Mittens is out there building businesses or anything anymore, he‘s just filthy rich so he doesn’t have to work. Is the low taxes a reward for jobs he may have created in the past? The point of the democrats, at least in part, is that it’s fundamentally wrong for investment income to be taxed lower than earned income and Mittens is the poster boy of that point and if he becomes president the wealthy will win at the cost of the rest of us.

    if (soon to be) president Romney was hiding anything, the IRS would be all over him.
    Harry Reid is making all of these false claims and yet he has failed to present his tax returns…why the double standard?
    Reid made his money from public office and Romney made his money from the private sector?
    This is yet another of the lies from the left. seems the left bases all of their “facts” on lies.

      Reid mentioned the loop holes. Does this mean that Romney lied on his tax returns or that Romney followed the tax code as written? Reid must define what the term loop holes means. The government wrote the tax laws and people just follow them.

    The burden of proof is not on Romney. If Reid has proof let him expose who told him (which would be against the law). If you think this is OK, now I will tell one,some people called me and said Obama never went to Harvard and graduated he only went for two weeks.       Looks to me like Mitt will not say anything until he has Obama in his sights. After the convention and he is confirmed the candidate, then he will turn it on, but not before. It would be wasted energy if obama isn’t his target. That is why they continue to try to provoke him now, but he is holding strong. I certainly hope that is his plan.
